Darker display of Nikon D50 NEF vs. JPGs

Until now I used to archive my images with iPhoto and was fairly satisfied with the application. Especially the slide show features and integration with the other iLife components are great.
But now that I got a Nikon D50 and have decided to shoot RAW, I noticed that the RAW images are quite dark (as reduced in exposure) when compared to the JPGs imported the same time. (RAW/JPG Basic import).
With the camera also came Nikon Picture Project which does not show this behavior, has some good features, but is lacking others. So at the moment I'm using both programs to make up for the faults in both.
Another flaw with iPhoto is that it only shows very limited EXIF info.
Has anybody been able to display Nikon D50 RAW images correctly in iPhoto? Any EXIF Plugins for iPhoto?

Appreciate your feedback, and I understand the difference between RAW and JPG images, but I need to repeat that I do not see the same in either Nikon Picture Project or iView Media Pro or Graphic Converter. It's clearly an iPhoto issue for me.
Further testing today caused a strange thing to happen. I made a duplicate of a RAW file in iPhoto, then tried to open it externally with Nikon Capture, which caused iPhoto to change both RAW files to JPG, although I made no changes in Nikon Capture. Checking the Originals folder it showed that iPhoto had added two files to the original RAW file, one with a -1.jpg, and one with a _1.NEF.
Only the JPG can be opened. Both the original RAW and the Duplicate are corrupted now and don't open with any application.
There is clearly something wrong with the way iPhoto handles RAW files. It should not touch the Original RAW.
Maybe it's only NEFs from my D50?
Guess I need to wait for an affordable version of Aperture.

  • Bug report: Wrong As Shot White Balance for Nikon D50 NEF in Camera Raw 7, Lightroom 4

For Nikon D50 cameras Adobe Creative Suite 6 does not read "As Shot" white balance data whether it's specified or not. It defaults to "Automatic". We have the problem only for Nikon D50 and only in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Camera Raw 7.3 and Photoshop Lightroom 4. (Not in CS5. Not for Nikon D5100 or D7000 or Canon S95) .
There is a more detailed posting at photoshop.com.

  • Nikon D50 NEF edits show size as '0 KB'

I asked this question many months ago and never received a reply! But I hope someone now has some ideas or solutions.
I have a Nikon D50 and iPhoto works fine with the NEF files from shooting in Raw EXCEPT for the fact that it displays edited file sizes in the information box as "0 KB". And it calculates the folder size using that '0 KB' for the edited photos. Thus one has no idea of size for export etc. In preferences, I have checked 'save photos as 16-bit TIFF files' but they show up after editing as NEF still.

    STG
Not one I've seen mentioned before.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that doesn't help: create a new library (hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'.) Import some pics and see if the problem recurs.
    If it does:
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Just imported picture library from Aperture - Can't view Nikon D800 NEF files in LR5.7.1

Just imported a large picture library from Aperture to LR 5.7.1- Can't view Nikon D800 NEF files in LR5. The projects and files loaded - but no thumbnail view of the image

I have a Nikon D50 nef on my desktop. Double-clicking on it opens Photoshop, which launches Adobe Camera Raw. If you get that far and can make adjustments in the ACR panel, you are fine. That's what opens first.
Then you click "Open" in ACR and your nef opens in Photoshop and the document tab on top gives the .nef extension. You make your edits there, but if you close Photoshop, you won't save it as nef, it won't be in the Save file list. You save it as psd for example and close Photoshop.
You now have a nef with develop settings on your desktop and the psd you saved out of Photoshop.
All perfectly normal as J.J. said, Photoshop will edit the nef file, but it will be saved in a format other than nef.

I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.  I get a message saying that Camera Raw does not support my camera type but it always has in the past.  The bridge no longer shows the picture view of my NEF files.  These are Nikon NEF files from the Nikon 5100 DSLR camera.  How do I fix this?

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

  • Nikon D5100 and D700, CS5, ACR 6.4.1: not enough memory when I convert many nef in jpg

The discution was ( and is) also here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3781380#3781380

Using ACR from PS3 or PS4, no problems. Using ACR 6.4.1. and making a batch convert, from nef  to jpg ( or to other formats) I receive "not enough memory" sometimes, and all the times when I select reducing noise and lens corrections. It happen also when I try to transform only one nef to jpg.
I have win 7, i7, memory in triple channel, the system on a SSD, the scratch disk of win on another free SSD and the scratch disk for PS ans ACR on another SSD. I have tryed all imaginable settings, and no hope to use the ACR. Old ACR are OK, only this 6.4.1 have a big problem on my system.

  • Using the Nikon RAW NEF format and Nikon Capture NX.

This is about using the RAW NEF format in Aperture together with RAW NEF capable editing programs, specifically Nikon Capture NX.
I basically agree with Aperture that it is a "workflow tool" and NOT a photo editor with all the bells and whistles of Photoshop or Nikon Capture. Apple fixed the most basic level of NEF conversion with version 1.1, great!
However, as a workflow tool for RAW images, I cannot seem to figure out how to use RAW (Nikon's NEF) files efficiently with the new Nikon Capture NX.
Nikon Capture NX is quite an interesting alternative to Photoshop. (I cannot wait or the Universal version, as with Photoshop, but that is another matter.) I like the work flow idea it uses, and I like that it edits the RAW NEF files directly, layering the edits on the RAW data. If I open an edited NEF file in Photoshop using the Nikon Plug-in, the result looks great. If I open the same file with Aperture (or using the Adobe RAW plugin) the result is basically an unedited version of the RAW NEF file. This is very disappointing.
It seems I need to export the file from Nikon Capture as a TIFF or JPG. The TIFF gives good results but takes up about 10x more disc space. With the JPG I must give up the 16-bit per channel color depth. Neither allow me to have a "RAW workflow" as advertised by Aperture.
What am I missing? Is this something Apple is going to work on by working more closely with Nikon (and Cannon)? (I figure Nikon keeps their conversion algorithms secret.)
Or are we out of luck here?

    Macbook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How do I know? Well if you change the white balance settings in-camera, different numbers come thru in Aperture. But the numbers in Aperture, ACR and the presumed numbers in-camera do not match. I wrote Nikon about this quite a while ago and they wrote back saying we do not know how other people interprete our proprietary WB numbers. See note below for additional insight as how you might look further into it
"The shooting data I referenced is available in Nikon View Browser when viewing your images. Looking at all the images at once, it is easy to compare changes made to the camera by quickly clicking on the separate thumbnails. They displayed the differences I had mentioned before. If you do not already have the software, you can download it here:
Title: Nikon View 6.2.7 Full Version - Windows
    URL: http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=13760&pcreated=1131989543
Nikon Capture will not report a temperature value for White Balance, unless a manual Kelvin setting is selected using the option in the D200. As I mentioned before, Auto White Balance, and other Auto settings in the camera may not deliver a consistent result in a burst or as separate still frames even if the subject has not moved or changed. You have a cast on that one image using Auto White Balance. This is not uncommon, just choose a different value. The value may not even accurately reflect what situation you are in. It may be sunny, and you choose cloudy. The White Balance is not measuring the ambient light, it's used to measure the temperature of the light reflecting off your subject. The closer your subject is to white, the closer the value. This is why a preset is taken with a white or neutral gray card.
Since Auto White Balance covers a wide range of temperature, the exact value is not recorded anywhere that I know of. In addition, all White Balance temperatures are approximate values, as per the manual page 35. Having a cast on an image while using Auto White Balance is very possible, just choose another value more suited to the ambient light.
Set the White Balance to K , and capture an image, and this will be reported by the shooting data in Nikon Capture. I have no idea whether ACR is reporting an accurate value or not, we do not support that software, but check this value against what you see in there software."

I'm having troubles converting my raw files from Nikon D5200 (NEF) to DNG. I tried using Lightroom 4, but it didn't identify the folder containing the files. So i downloaded the latest DNG converter but that too didn't identify the files kept in the folder location. So I downloaded DNG converter v7.3 for D5200. It identifies the folder and files; but it is giving me parsing error on trying to convert files. I'm running Windows Vista Home Edition SP1. Kindly advise. Thank you.

I probably missed this detail in what you’ve posted, but do you see the thumbnails of the three cameras’ raw files in Finder if you don’t convert to DNG?
What has happened in the past is that the Apple raw interpreter doesn’t read thumbnails of DNGs it doesn’t like, where at least one thing it didn’t used to like was embedded lens corrections for mirrorless cameras.  Are the Olympus and Panasonic mirrorless—meaning there is no optical viewfinder and everything is seen on an LCD screen or perhaps an electronic view finder?  If so the reason these are different is that the camera is doing the lens distortion corrections automatically and this information is stored in the raw files and in the DNGs but Apple doesn’t know how to use these embedded lens corrections or doesn’t know how to read the newer DNG spec that does allow for this information to be embedded in the DNG, at least.
Apple could just extract the embedded jpg preview and ignore the other parts of the file it doesn’t understand, but it apparently doesn’t do this.
What I’m not sure about is if the Apple raw interpreter still has this problem or if you’re on an older system without the latest updates for camera raw decoding by Apple.

  • Camera RAW, Photoshop CS, Nikon D50

I have Photoshop CS (not CS1 or 2 or 3, just CS; i.e. v. 8.0) and my camera is a Nikon D50. I have tried installing the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in, versions 2.0 and 2.3, but if I try to open a RAW image from my camera (i.e. in NEF format), I get an error message: 'not the right kind of document'. Can anyone please advise?

I'm afraid I have a new question. With the Adobe DNG converter (v. 5.3) and ACR 2.4, I can now open .NEF files from my Nikon D50 camera in Photoshop CS (v.8.0) and make adjustments to exposure, contrast, etc. But I have a problem with image size. As soon as I convert the RAW (.NEF) file to .dng, it becomes very large, and if I open it in PS and save it, it becomes huge. Here is an example, starting with a particular .NEF file straight from my camera:
    .NEF: 5.4 MB
    .dng: 11.9 MB
    Saved in PS as:
    .raw: 34.5 MB
    .psd: 34.5 MB
    .tif: 34.5 MB
It seems that I cannot save the image in any of these formats as a JPEG in PS.
At that rate, I shall rapidly run out of hard disk space, and even if I get images off my hard disk by burning them to CD, I should only be able to store about 20 photographs on one CD.
It seems that I cannot save a converted image as a JPEG in PS itself, but if I use GraphicConverter to convert the image, saved in one of the formats discussed above, to JPEG at maximum quality, it reduces to 4.2 MB. Is this my only solution to being able to store a reasonable number of photos? It seems rather cumbersome. I should be most grateful for information as to why the file gets so big, and what I can do about it.

  • Cannot import Nikon D800 NEF photos into Preview, iPhoto, or Aperture

My iMac will not display Nikon D800 NEF photos in Preview, iPhoto, or Aperture. Any solutions?

    Need more info.
Most specifically, which OS version are you using? Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto?
From the sound of it, my first guess would be the versions you're running. Nikon D800 gained support in Lion 10.7.4 (Nikon D800E support was added in RAW Compatibility update 3.13 sometime last year).
If you're running versions earlier than these (e.g Snow Leopard) then the OS doesn't know how to deal with these RAW files.

  • How to keyword both NEF and JPG files?

I use a Nikon D300 and shoot NEF+JPG. I ingest the files to my hard drive using Downloader Pro and then import them into Lightroom. Lightroom apparently "stacks" the NEF and JPG files together, and the thumbnail is shown as filename.NEF+JPG. When I keyword the files, the keywords are applied only to the XMP sidecar to the NEF file, and not to the JPG files.
While I guess this "NEF+JPG" is called a stack, this appears to be some kind of special stack, as I cannot unstack the images and keyword them separately. Selecting "Stacking->Expand all stacks" does nothing. "Stacking->Unstack" is disabled.
How can I get the keywords applied to the JPG files as well as to the NEF/XMP files?
    Thanks.
    Guy

OK, I found that option and will try it.
What's the best way of recovering the directories I have already imported with NEF+JPG files? I presume I could delete those directories from the LR database and import them again. (I have enabled the option always to write to XMP.)
That would, I hope, give me both NEF and JPG files showing up in LR. Is there an easy way to copy the keywording from each NEF to the corresponding JPG file?
    Thanks.
