Darker photos

I've had Photoshop Elements 10 for two years. Never a problem printing until now. Out of the blue, photos are coming out very dark on my Epson printer. Epson says it's a problem with Photoshop. Seems to be the case as I printed using a different program and the output is clear and bright. I haven't made any settings adjustments. Any suggested fixes?

Thanks, Barbara. This unfortunately didn't fix the problem. So uninstalled Elements 10 and tried to reinstall. I was unable to install due to Error 1303 (Installer has insufficient privileges...) I tried the helpx.adobe.com fix that has been recommended in the past to people with this issue but had no luck. I have Windows7. I know this is an Adobe forum, but does anyone have any other ideas? I've also thought about just buying Elements 13 but I'm concerned that I'll run into the same error message when I try to install it. I really can't afford to waste money on a program that won't install. Does anyone know if this will be a problem? Or can you suggest where I might get a definitive answer to this question? Thank you.

For those of you having issues with dark photo using the camera on the listed devices, try this. I was having exactly the same problem even when there was background lighting and the flash was on. By chance! while playing around with the camera I have found touching the screen on either product improved the poor quality and enhances the contrast and brightness. However it does not make any differeance when using the Panormic mode. If it works for you please let me know and star accordingly., ta

If backlight is making the object you want to photograph too dark, touch the screen where the object you want to photograph is. It will set the focus and light meter in that area. A white square will show up to show you the area it's focusing and setting the light adjustment on.

  • Dark Photo Problem

First off, I am a rank amateur and do not understand tech-speak. I am working on my home computer (Dell Dimension E520) with Windows Vista installed. I have Photoshop Elements 8.0 installed and recently installed Lightroom 3.4.1 for my college student Granddaughter.
Now the problem: all the photos we import into Lightroom show up dark, both individually and in a group. However, they show up normally in Elements Even stranger, when I use Windows Photo Gallery, they show up normal in the gallery more, but when I open an individual image it comes up dark.
Does anyone have an idea as to what I need to do to make Lightroom usable? Please remember that I am very low on the technical understanding curve.

First of all, trust Lightroom over the other programs.  Second, look at your histogram and see if it includes information all the way to the right. If not, your image is underexposed. Third look at the presets that are or are not selected when you import.  Generally, Autotone does a pretty good job for many situations and can be a good starting point, particularly if your exposures are all over the board.  You can select Autotone as a preset to apply when you import.  If that doesn't help, then I would suggest that your camera settings are likely the problem.  Double check the metering area on your camera and make sure that you are set for a mode that results in a good evaluation for the type of shooting you do.  If you are using full auto, you may want to switch to Program and make some adjustments.  You may find that you need to program your camera to overexpose by 1/3 or 2/3 of an f stop in order to get a consistently good exposure.
In LR, you can click on the little triangle on the upper right of the histogram to turn on the highlight indicator.  If you will add exposure and/or brightness (depending on the phofo and result you are trying to acheive) until the highlight indicator shows that somewhere in the image you have burned out the highlights, and then crank it back a click or two. This should give you a basic good exposure.  Other adjustments may be necessary, such as black level, saturation, etc., but you will have a starting point.  If you find that this is a fix for many of your images, you can make a preset out of it and apply it either on import or to individual or groups of photos.
If you have a good exposure in-camera, even with no presets LR should show the photo correctly on your screen.  I have found over the years that images that "look fine" in photoshop or photoshop elements without having gone through LR first may not actually be bright enough.  Your histogram will tell everything.  My experience is that LR is THE BEST single photo editing product on the market.  If I had to choose between LR and PS, it would be LR.  BUT, do your best to get it right in camera first.

  • Dark photos from Aperture, iPhoto or Drag and drop

All imported photos (from aperture, iphoto or drag&droped) whitin a project are very dark in the viewer, and in the final video (itunes, export with several options...). The histogram levels of the image are low. The preview image in the project looks fine.
I tried repair permissions with disk Utility, system clean with Onyx... the problem remains.
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem, but only after I installed the iMovie 9.0.1 update. Before then my still images looked fine when imported.
But now, my pictures are coming up so dark as to be unusable. I was forced to export them as slideshow movies from iPhoto and import them as clips to iMovie last time I tried to use still images.

  • Dark photos

My C310a Photosmart Premium eall-in-one prints photos too dark. I can use Photoshop to lighten them - then they are fine. Is there a way to lighten the output via hardware or software?

    Hi there,
Could you provide the community with a little more information to help narrow troubleshooting? What operating system are we using and are these photos scanned with the C310a or are they from a seperate source?
You can say thanks by clicking the Kudos Star in my post. If my post resolves your problem, please mark it as Accepted Solution so others can benefit too.

  • Dark Photo Images

I really like the camera but all images it takes are very dark (despite the lighting when taken). After receiving them as email or importing them in iPhoto, all must be individually opened and adjusted to increase exposure. We've tried this on multiple machines (G4 and Intel) using two different iPhones and we used different apps (iPhoto, Photoshop and Aperture) all with the same result.
Is there any way to increase exposure in iPhone? If not, is there a way to perform the correction on a batch of images in iPhoto?

There was a thread a few days ago where a lady said hers were always dark but her husbands iPhone were much better (taking photos in same place of the same thing). She even posted examples.
In the end, she took it to Apple store to show them. They gave her a new phone and the camera is much better.

  • Iphone camera is not combining the light and dark photos but is presenting them as separate photos

    Hello Community,
My friend showed me his iPhone 4 today and every time he takes a photo a dark version and a lighter version are shown, not combined as one but as two separate photos. I believe I remember that the camera takes more than one shot and combines the best of both, his camera is not combining them. How do instruct him to fix this problem?
    Thank you for any help,
    Nick M.

    Hello,
    And thanks for your time.
Am I understanding you correctly, that it is normal for there to be two photos, one dark and one light?

  • Dark photos on N95 8BG

I have just bought an N95 8GB but find my photos very disappointing,i had a sony ericsson 800i before and had perfect pics, can anyone recommend settings for the camera?
even with flash on pics taken indoors are very dark and outdoor ones are not as clear as i thought they would have been.
    dor.

There's a few cases documented on the net where people have reinstalled firmware several times over before getting the desired result with the camera.
It's truly bizarre, you'd think one install would be the same as another, but I'm convinced it's not the case having seen many people talking about reinstalling version 12.x.x. of the firmware 3 or 4 times before the camera works.
My camera has definately improved vastly since updating from version 10.xx.xx, guess I was just lucky.

  • Dark photo in lightroom

Hi guys, when open picture in lightroom,my pictures are 4 stop down and windows photo gallery to but if I open with CS2,paint shop pro, windows media center, pictures are OK (have windows vista)any ideas what is the problem

I would look at Split Toning.
If you want it to look like it is printed on Fucshia paper tone the Highlights.
If you want it to look like it is printed on white paper with Fucshia ink, tone the Shadows.
When you get it like you want, hit the little "+" in the Preset panel header and save it with only Split Toning checked.

  • Prints Black/Dark Photos

I have recently updated to both a new computer (Windows XP to Win 7) and a newer version of Elements (5.0 to 7.0). My printer is a HP Photosmart 5180. All photos are in a RAW File format. Now the problem:
With my previous combination of wndows/elements my photos printed bright and vibrant, but with my new computer/elements the photos print almost black. I thought orrigionally that it might be my printer, but when I saved my picture in a non-compressed TIFF format and took to a local photo lab, the colors of the prints from the lab matched the prints off my computer. Can anyone explain this or have had similar problems, and what can be done to fix it.
Thank you for your input and help.
    Don

When I set up my computer, I had to download a new driver from HP, so the driver should not be the problem. Most of the photos were shot with sRGB colorspace, though a few are in Adobe. Could it be the version of Windows, or the bit depth? (ie 32 v 64)

It is normal for it to get warm when it's being used, especially if it is hot outside. It can even get uncomfortably warm. As long as it is not causing you physical harm (as in giving you burns) or displaying a temperature warning, then it's normal behavior. It's like taking your laptop outside and using it. Except the laptop will probably burn you.

  • Poor quality / dark photo books?

    Hi
I created a photo book for a Christmas present and ordered 2 copies for over £50.
I hadn't ordered one for years and that one was superb but these are awful. Pics were shot with an ESO 400D and they look great on (calibrated) iMac and Formac screens but the books all look really under exposed. Backgrounds for example, which contains plant life etc have more or less just come out black.
What should I do ? (I know it's a little late after ordering them but have been busy) - should I send them back to be reprinted ?
    thanks
    Roger

    Roger:
What is the color profile of those photos? Are they the Adobe RGB?
You might be able to get some compensation from apple. Contact them via the following link and explain in detail the issue. Waiting this long may work against you however but it's worth a try: http://www.apple.com/support/photoservices/returns/
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why is my Canon 600d taking really dark photos?

I'm using a Canon 600d with a EFS 18-55mm lens. I'm in the M setting on the dial with the shutter speed at 1/125 and f/5.6 and the phots are coming out really dark even though the room is bright. Please help?

Actually... I WOULD buy the Bryan Peterson "Understanding Exposure" book... probably one of the most recommended books for those who want to learn to take control of their DSLR and learn to shoot on manual.  The Scott Kelby Digital Photography series of books is also commonly recommended (I think that's up to 4 volumes now) -- but I think the Bryan Peterson book is probably more popular.  These books use common language and wont confuse you with technical terms with a presumption that you know all the terminology... they teach you the terminology, but the books are designed for those just starting out.
The ultimate goal is to understand how to determine when you have the right exposure... if you can shoot in manual you can shoot in any mode.  With that said... I do actually use ALL the modes on my camera -- not just manual.  There are reasons the other modes exist.
As for videos... this one should hopefully be a good primer to understand exposure and how you can trade off one part of the exposure setting, but make up for it by balancing out another part of the exposure setting.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-NhJua5NFA
BTW, you'll learn about "equivalent exposures" -- but they're not really equivalent.  When you trade one setting for another, you get nuances... some exposures are better for freezing action.  Some better for creating selective focus (focus only on your intended subject with everything else deliberately blurred).  Some are better for landscapes where everything is in focus.  Some are better for keeping noise minimized in low light shooting.  Some are better for "blurring" moving parts of the shot to imply motion.  The list goes on and on -- the point is, picking the right exposure combination is a creative process.
I do NOT normally suggest you crank up the ISO as a way to improve the light becasue the camera will increase the amount of "noise" in the image.  The image will start to look grainy.  If you shoot JPEG then the camera will attempt to reduce the noise via software smoothing processes... but this has the side effect of softening the image (focus will not look as sharp.)
This is why it's a good idea to read a good book or watch a few good videos to make sure you understand it.  It's actually not very hard, but may take some practice to get it to really sink in.  I find that even after explaining it to people, they don't "really" get it until they do a few exercises/experiments of their own -- and then the light bulb comes on and you "get it".
