Darwin/BSD (my-macs-name) (consol) at startup. Why and what to do???

I get this at startup:
Darwin/BSD (my-macs-name) (consol)
login:
I login using my info then there is the $ prompt. I have no clue what to do then.
This has never happened before. I usualy start the mac and it goes to my desktop screen.
I have done disc repairs, everything is repaired, but still it goes to the consol. I have tried both safe mode and single user mode, and the startup process stops on the light blue apple screes before any spining wheel.
Please help.

I found another topic here that you might want to look at. It is worth trying at least removing the preference file. I'm going to give the full path to these commands since I'm not sure how healthy your environment is.
Start in Single User mode again, then (type carefully):
/sbin/fsck -fyand repeat this command until it says your disk is OK. Then
/sbin/mount -uw /
/bin/rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
/bin/rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
/sbin/rebootIf this doesn't work I would think you need to re-instal, but if you want to try repairing permissions, which one poster in the above topic claimed worked for him, you will need some additional stuff.
In Single User mode
/bin/sh /etc/rc
/usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /
/sbin/rebootIf none of this works, your best bet is to try an Archive & Install:

Thank you for the link! I've read it and it kinda opens a whole new can of worms for me. So if I understand correctly the xmp file stores Metadata because a .CR2 file cannot store the metadata inside of it. And the storage of this information with the file is necessary if you make metadata changes in Lightroom, and then later want to open that file in a different program. So if I ever decide to reorganize some of my raw files in Mac's Finder folders than all I have to do is make sure I move the xmp file along with it? Not separate them? And then my other question is does the xmp file also store the changes I made in developer? Like the white balance, exposure, lens corrections, etc...?

I downloaded the newest version of firefox but it will not install, it is giving me a message saying the directory name is invalid. Why and what can I do to fix.

The above message pops up when I try to install the new version of firefox. It will not let me install the new version. I do not know how to fix it. Please advise.

If you get pinwheels when off the Internet, it coudl be a failing boot drive or just a few bad sectors as it has a hard time reading from it.

Stuck in Darwin/BSD (macintosh.local.) (console)

Somehow, in attempting to reset my main password (which I was able to do by using the start-up disc, finally), I have gotten myself stuck in the Darwin console.
Here is the start-up procedure.
1. I turn on the machine
2. It boots from the hard drive
3. I get the chime and think everything is going on fine
4. I get the prompt to select a user id and enter the password
5. I choose the one ID and enter the password
6. I am taken, not to the GUI, but to the Darwin/BSD console login.
I can't move forward, log in, nor exit.
Any help?

The filevault image could have been corrupted, someone could have changed the password to the filevault id while not following the correct procedure, filevault image is not in the correct place, or the permissions on the file for filevault image could have changed.

Mac Pro has dual Amd video cards installed, and does not offer Nvidia cards with Cuda in this line up, as far as I can tell. The iMacs offer nvidia cards which seem a better choice for Premiere Pro which uses the cuda rendering capabilities. Which would be best for Premiere Pro? The quad Mac Pro, or the top of the line iMac with double the ram, say 32gigs vs 16 in the Mac Pro? Why did Apple put AMD cards in the Mac Pro line?

Your surest bet is to make sure that you have an up-to-date backup of your stuff and then do an Archive and Install. If you don't have a backup and since you can't log in, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire Mac to see if you can rescue your data.

Mac cycling through blue startup screen and desktop after installing app...

Hi again folks! I'm hoping I can pick your brains on this one, as it's got me scratching my head here...
My fiance just accidentally installed a 64bit version of Handbrake on her white macbook (running Leopard 10.5.8, I believe). The battery on her macbook is completely drained (to the point where it won't hold a charge at all), so she has to keep the laptop plugged in at all times. Supposedly (I wasn't actually there for this event), the laptop got unplugged during installation of this 64 bit app.
When she plugged the laptop back in, it boots into the desktop for about 1 second and the goes back to the blue screen for about 6 seconds, and then back to the desktop... rinse and repeat.
Now I've tried getting her to do a safeboot, which appears to do something similar (she gets the Safeboot login screen, except when she tries to login in, it just kicks her back to the login screen.)
What to do? I'm in another city right now (go figure) and can't actually fix it for her other than providing directions to her. I will have access to the laptop by sometime tomorrow, so I can take a shot at fixing it from there...
Does anybody have any suggestions of things to try in the meantime?
Seems to me, if it's just a matter of having a 64bit app installed on a 32 bit kernel, this should be relatively easy to fix... yes? Thanks for reading.

I would do the disk repair to start. If the drive is OK then you may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

HT3680 My 3 year old iMac is freezing and I get a message "startup disk almost full for running applications. delete files..." Where do I find the startup disk and what should I delete?

My 3 year old Mac is having trouble and freezes up from time to time lately. I get a message saying "startup disk almost full, delete files ..." something about having enough room for applications to function. I know my startup disk is the Macintosh HD, but what kind of files do I need to delete and how much space do I need to free up? In my "about this mac" area, it says I have 4.89gb free out of 319.21 So I am confused why I need to do this.

You're less than 2% free and should always have at least 15% (my SWAG). Best is to get an ext FWHD and move stuff from the startup disk to it and delete it from that. Best things to move are movies, music, and photos, using the apps that manage those things.

My hard drive is no longer shows up in Sys Pref's. It only shows a network startup. Why and what can I do?

When I go to System Preferences, Startup Disk I see an icon that says "Network Setup" with an icon that has a question mark on it.
I am hard wired to a router but think that I should still have the start up disk icon there.
Does anybody have any idea's or knowledge on this subject?

I just switched over to my administrator account and the hard drive is in Sys. Pref, start up disk. on that account! The problem is only on my standard account!
Would it be best for me to remove the secondary account and create a new one?
Actually, I really only have the secondary account as I was taught years ago to use a standard account as opposed to an administrator account for security purposes. Is that still recommended?
Also, thank you for bringing the 10.6.5 and 10.6.7 to my attention.

Apple Mail (v6.6, Mac OSX v10.8.5) mixes up mail threads - why, and what can I do?

I am having a weird synchronisation problem. My Mail (v6.6) on my MacBook Air (Mac OSX v10.8.5) mixes up random email threads after I read emails on my iPhone (5C).
E. g. there is an email thread with Frank. Frank writes a new email that I read on my iPhone. Shortly after, I open Mail on my MacBook, so that Frank’s email is downloaded there as well, displayed as "read" and added to the existing thread with Frank. However, although still being named "Frank", showing the current date and reference, in fact it is an email of Fritz from two years ago, having nothing at all to do with the thread with Frank.
Synchronising with the iPhone with USB has no effect, although the emails remain correctly displayed on the iPhone. On my MacBook’s Mail, the email from Fritz keeps to exist a second time at the time and place where it is supposed to be. Frank's email that has been replaced incorrectly, seems to be lost.
I don’t have to explain how unfortunate such random email shuffling is. I shall be thankful for any support and hints. Many thanks,

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

first even though you tell me i dont need the update, i still don't like seeing

i do the long download for the update,
and install and give whatever they ask in passwords etc,
then it reboots and go through all the new installation crap
that I need to do
it is getting to be like a Microsoft project here,
and i cannot get google to show me the way or Applecare
with the one year left on extended support, and these apple communities

I have several other wireless devices (laptop, iPod touch, blackberry) which have absolutely no problems at all.
Since it's just the iPad wi fi issue, try restoring as new.

You may have an app installed that's causing problems with your Wi Fi. After you restore as a new device, sync 5 apps at a time, then test the Wi Fi on the iPad. Keep syncing apps... you might find a culprit.
Scanning the Internet there seems to be lots of other people having this problem.

I have a brand new Mac Mini (July 2014) with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB hard drive and I typed in my screen saver password today and it froze up. Had to push the power switch and restart the computer. Why, and what can I do to prevent this?

It shouldn't crash just because I type in my screen saver password. But it did. I had to push the power button to shut it down and turn it back on.

Freezes happen occasionally. Hard to pinpoint a cause. I wouldn't let it worry you as they are rare. If this happens often then post back as there may be something wrong.

Hi, my mac has stopped playing some avi files (that used to work). I can see the video. Does anyone know why and what i can do? My version of quicktime is 7.6.9.

Hi i have avi files saved in iphoto that i used to be able to play through quicktime. However in the last few weeks i cannot play many of these files. I can see the videos and click on them but nothing happens (i have version 7.6.9 of quicktime). Does anyone know why this has happened and what i can do about this?

What do you mean by what audio/video formats are involved? These are all files from several digital cameras.
As previously stated, AVI is a file container. It is somewhat old and its originator, Microsoft, dropped official support of it over a decade ago. However, it remains popular with PC users since almost any valid audio and/or video compression format can be stuffed to the file which synchronizes the content by interleaving the individual audio and video frames. The compression format is the specific manner in which the audio and video data are encoded as it is placed in the AVI container. You can find the compression format by inspecting the file in the Finder "Info" window, or in the "Inspector" window of the QT player (or other media player) if the file can be opened.
For instance, one popular compression combination would be to place DivX encoded video and MP3 audio in an AVI file container. However, neither DivX nor MP3 is natively supported by the QT player. (Although iTunes will natively support the MP3 audio.) Therefore, people who wish to play such files in the QT 7 Player would normally install either the DivX component or Perian but not both. Either installation will independently play such files in the QT Player, but if both are installed, the file will usually stop working since these two codecs can create a playback conflict.
However, the AVI container could just as easily contain DV along with DV audio. In this case, the file should play correctly in QT since this compression format is natively supported by the basic component configuration that comes in every current OS installation. Therefore, if such files suddenly stopped playing, this could be an indication that a component has been moved or deleted or that your system or QT embedded structure has become corrupted.
