Dashboard in Leopard

Hi All,
I'm having trouble with a number of dashboard widgets in 10.5.1. I recently upgraded from 10.4.10 to 10.5, and have been experiencing slow responsiveness, and erratic behavior from a number of widgets, most notably the stock tracker, which does not display all stock prices, and is unresponsive when I wish to change the preferences.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Thanks! and all the best.

Dashboard in Leopard is not working for me either, but for different reasons. I am running Leopard 10.5.1. One day, I opened up my Dashboard and there where no Dashboard wigets. I tried adding one but it only closed Dashboard as soon as I clicked the icon. This has been going on for a couple days. Also, I noticed today that when I click "Show in Finder" in my stacks, it switches to Finder but doesn't open up the selected folder. Please give suggestions.

(I will keep updating this post with further questions.)

Not too hard to fix. Do you by any chance have Parental Controls switched on? If you do there is a solution. On the person/people you have it on for take Application Limits OFF...... Then it should be fine otherwise delete your config file.

  • Leopard Available After Snow Leopard is Released?

I have a G4 iBook that still has Tiger. Will Leopard still be available to upgrade that machine after Snow Leopard is released? Since my iBook can never be upgraded to Snow Leopard, what will my options be? Will I be stuck with Tiger on that machine forever if I don't act right away?

Will Leopard still be available to upgrade that machine after Snow Leopard is released?
Apple has not made any announcement regarding the last day it will be available at their stores. None of us has a crystal ball. However, the used and refurbished Mac stores*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
Often have older operating systems available even after Apple has discontinued selling it directly.
See my upgrade FAQ* to learn if you are prepared for upgrading to Leopard:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
A few known limitations for your configuration:
Note the Classic environment is not supported under Leopard. You'll want to either backup and partition your hard drive, to have Tiger and Leopard on your Mac, or add a Firewire external hard drive to install Tiger onto to keep Classic going.
Leopard's Boot Camp does not support PowerPC Macs.
Leopard's software does not support iPhoto version 2.
If you are going to add more Dashboard widgets, Leopard takes up as much as twice the RAM as Tiger.

  • In snow leopard, 2 fingers to the left on the mouse went back to the previous page. In Lion, it opens the dashboard. How can i make firefox go back to previous page with two fingers left on the mouse??

    Hi,
I don't know of a preference, but have you used ⌘-T in iCal?
    Best wishes

  • Dashboard buttons are drawn incorrectly on Safari 3 and Leopard

I have some widgets that work fine with Dashboard in Tiger:
    http://vocaro.com/trevor/software/widgets/
If I load the widget's HTML file In Safari 3, however, the buttons on each widget are drawn incorrectly. Here's an example:
    http://vocaro.com/trevor/files/SafariScreenSnapz002.png
I'm told the buttons are also drawn incorrectly on Leopard, even when the widget is used normally in Dashboard (not just in Safari, as is the case for Tiger). I don't have Leopard yet and can't confirm this, but the behavior seems to be the same as when viewing the widget in Safari 3 in Leopard.
Trouble is, I have no idea how to fix this problem. I checked the widget carefully but didn't see anything that would cause this bug. I also noticed that some of the examples in /Developer/Examples/Dashboard (such as Fader.wdgt) exhibit the same problem in Safari 3 on Tiger.
Has anyone else seen this sort of problem with buttons in Dashboard widgets?
    Thanks.

    The same in Tiger 10.4.11.

  • Back in the days of leopard, the dashboard widgets would come to the foreground but you could still see what you were working on.  Now I've updated to mountain lion and the work is no longer visible when I activate dashboard.  Can I change that back?

Go to system preferences, mission control, and unselect "Show Dashboard as a Space".  While you're there, you may want to make dashboard set to a hot corner "Hot Corners" button at the bottom.

  • Seriously!!!..why is Leopard dock, dashboard, expose so choppy???

On my brand new MBP 2.2 2GB ram, all of the graphics that were nice and smooth on Tiger are choppy and sluggish. Dock, dashboard transition, expose is choppy. I must admit I am extremely dissapointed. I have seen others experience this on forums, and it kind of makes OSX Leopard look like...well...windows.
Apple...PLEASE fix this quickly. It is soo frustrating when coming from a perfectly running Tiger...

    Hi,
Since you use Cisco router you probably have a fair amont of network knowladge.
    1. Make sure that all Macs are on the same LAN behing the Time Capsule (LAN side not WAN side). Also it helps if the Time Capsule is the DHCP server on the network. I suspect youmay have your Cis co doing this.
    2. Make sure the time capsule is up to date - it should be if you do not ignore update messages on the Mac you run Airport to configure the TC.
    3. In the Airport utility go to the Disk tab and enable File Sharing. Ideally password protected but not essential if you feel safe.
Provided you have all this sorted it shoudl work.
I have seen networks with Cisco routers where Apple computers where struggling to find themselves. This is down to broadcast issue Cisco / Apple.
But properly configured it should work.

  • Dashboard Widgets don´t work with Leopard

After installing Leopard the Widgets worked for a short time.
I have installed the dashboard tools but did nothing with them.
I don´t know if the widgets ran after this.
Now I can press F12, the + sign appears in the left corner.
I can press the + sign and the dashbord appears at the bottom of the desktop.
If I click at a Widget the Dashboard disappears and nothing happens.
    No Widget starts.
If I move a Widget to the desktop it disappears if I release the mouse button. The Dashboard disappears too.

to fritzk who originally reported this and all others posting here —
i have also reported in this forum (as have others), the problem with the widgets freezing —>> see my post here about it. that post also references other posts that have found the same thing.
yes, we know about the workaround of creating a non-admin. account, logging out of your main account, logging into the non-admin. account, logging back out of that and back into your original admin. account, and then the widgets come back to life. that is a kludgy workaround at best — you shouldn't have to go through those type of machinations just to get your widgets working (so to speak).
also, it should be clear that there are two separate issues here — the widget freeze situation and the widgets just disappearing altogether when dashboard is called up. the widget freeze is the most common one seen under leopard (and nowhere else now). that has nothing to do with the widgets disappearing, which seems to be a general mac os x error, not just leopard.
and to throw more gas on the fire, here's something else — widgets, especially games that use a grid model, do not show up formatted correctly. their grid ends up looking weird. i reference examples to this in my post i list above.
is there a place to bug report this with apple? please advise.

  • HT2492 I am using Snow Leopard and the icon for dashboard was removed from the dock.  Does anyone knopw how to put it back?  I have searched Finder, Trash and the Applications folder but i can't find it.  It works when i press F4 so it must still be there

I have searched Finder, Trash and the applications folder but i can't find where it is kept.  I want to put the icon for Dashboard back in the dock - how can i do this?

The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

  • After Snow Leopard installed dashboard calendar widgit disappeared

There used to be a little calendar that appeared when I hit the little top button on the mouse.
    Where did it go?
How can I add things to the dashboard?

Check your mouse settings in System Preferences > Mouse
You can add widgets to your Dashboard from here > Mac 101: Dashboard
    Apple - Downloads - Dashboard

  • I don't have a dual-layer drive, can I install Tiger or Leopard?

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard come on what appear to be larger than 4.7 GB discs. This does not mean you need a dual layer drive to install them. Some Macs capable of installing Tiger or Leopard came with a built-in CD-RW, or CD-ROM drive. For those a compatible Firewire DVD drive for booting Mac OS X can work instead of replacing the internal drive. Tiger also came in a limited edition Media Exchange Program CD installer package, which you may be able to find in the open market. The limitation for each is dependant on other hardware:
    1. If your Mac shipped new with no Firewire, you may be able to install Tiger a special third party addon software known as XPostFacto.
    2. If your Mac shipped new with less than 867 Mhz built-in processor (including dual processor 800 MHz or less), you may be able to install Leopard with a special third party addon software known as Leopard Assist.
    3. If your Mac shipped with a processor upgrade card installed, and #2 is true, a firmware update may be available from the processor upgrade card vendor that allows Leopard's installation.
    4. Tiger needs at least 256 MB of RAM.
Leopard needs at least 512 MB of RAM.
If you have a lot of dashboard widgets, you may need to increase RAM to improve performance on either operating system. The RAM needs to follow Apple's specs to ensure smooth operation. Only get RAM with a lifetime warranty.
    5. Officially you need for Tiger:
"At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools" from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514
And officially for Leopard you need:
"9 GB of available disk space or more" from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759
However, I would add to that if your hard drive doesn't have at least 15% of the drive free in addition to that, you may experience significant slowing down in the operating system function. This number has been arbitrarily discovered by many users.
    6. When installing Tiger or Leopard, if your machine shipped with Panther (10.3) or earlier, be sure to get the retail Tiger or retail Leopard.
The Tiger installer is a san serif gray and white X with a spotlight on the center of the X on a black background.
The Leopard installer is a san serif black and gray X on a pink galaxy centered on a black background.

  • Photoshop CS2 keeps crashing on MacBook Pro running snow leopard

I have been using CS2 on my MacBook Pro for more than two years.  Just two days ago, the Photoshop application began to UNEXPECTEDLY QUIT every time I opened it.  All other apps in the CS2 are working fine.  I have NEVER had a problem with the CS2 or this application.  I did download a trial of QuarkXpress 9 and a trial of Office for Mac 2011, but that should not have any effect on the CS2.  I went to the Apple store and we reloaded my system software (Snow Leopard) and updated back to my original 10.6.8 system but Photoshop keeps quitting.  I called Adobe tech support just now and we spent over 90 minutes, re-installed Version Que and still Photoshop keep quitting.  We changed the Administrator and that had no effect, Photoshop keeps quitting.  There is no common action that causes it.  I can be cloning and it will freeze, I can flatten, cut and paste and save, then it quits.  Any suggestions?  I cannot afford to upgrade to CS5 and I am more concerned WHY this would happen out of the clear blue...I have not added any typefaces.  Any suggestions?

Maybe you applied an update to your OS recently?
Illustrator is from a different planet, as are other point applications artificially lumped together into a "suite" by marketing fiat.  How other applications behave is irrelevant.
You really, really need to upgrade.
I didn't want to upgrade beyond Photoshop CS4, so I stopped upgrading all my  hardware and all my software. Therefore, I experience no problems whatsoever.

  • Using Safari (Leopard) to login to my club forum

Sometimes when I login to my club website to access the club forum via Safari 3 in Leopard 10.5.1 the user log on the website shown a large number of logins at exactly the same time. (can be up to as many as five)
This does not happen every time. Sometimes it correctly only shows one login and some times it shows two. Two logins I can understand as I have tow web clips for two different sections of the forum (so I can see if there are any new posts without opening safari) and this double login only shows after loading the dashboard.
This problem cannot be dashboard related as it was still present when I was using the Safari 3 beta in Tiger.
This is not a fault with the website as it does not happen with anybody else's user profile. I am the only user connecting with a Mac and the only one with the problem.
Has anybody else seen this behaviour with Safari (or other browsers on the Mac) before and does anybody know what is causing it and how to stop it?
    Thanks

  • SERIOUS BUG - cannot log in Leopard after upgrading to 10.5.7!

Hi all, I upgraded my Macbook Pro to 10.5.7 via Software Update, and after that I cannot log in anymore! The system boots fine, I land on the log in screen. After entering the password, it seems to be logging in, I can see the dashboard and everything, and then it automatically logs out and jumps back to the log in screen!
I searched on Apple Support and found this -> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543?viewlocale=en_US, changing the password in single user mode doesn't work either!
Hope you guys know what's going on and give me a hand! I tried to contact Apple Support but they said my AppleCare is expired and won't help!
    Thanks guy!

Using Software Update can be finnicky!
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.7 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.7 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3397
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
