Dashboard re-design (now with Yosemite it looks old)

Dashboard looks now old.
Yosemite looks Great.
When we will have a new design? Even the by-default apple widgets are not consistent design.
thanks

You may only do a reinstall over the same version or a prior version. For example, if you are running Mavericks and want to upgrade to Yosemite, then you can run a reinstall over Mavericks. But you can't go in the other direction. So, if you now have Mavericks installed, then you cannot downgrade to Mountain Lion without first erasing the drive. This also applies to using Time Machine. If you have a Time Machine backup of Mavericks, then you must erase the drive if you want to restore a Time Machine backup of Mountain Lion. Furthermore, the Mountain Lion backup cannot be mixed with some Mountain Lion files and some Mavericks files. It's OK to mix them on the backup, but not on a running system.

  • Can I mirror my ipad mini to my new imac with Yosemite (or Mavericks?)

    Hello!
I would like to mirror what is on my ipad mini to my new imac with Mavericks 10.9.5 or Yosemite. (In about this Mac, it says 10.9.5, so I guess my question would apply to either Mavericks or Yosemite, since I can update if needed.)
I have seen old posts about this, saying that you must use additional 3rd party software.
Is this still the case, or have things changed with new macs and Mavericks 10.9.5 or Yosemite?
Is there a way to use Apple TV to do this? or Is Apple TV only for HDTVs?
    Thanks!

Thank you, Demo! I had no idea that was possible. Looks like that would be the answer, except.....
I did some additional research just now, and it looks like it was a blessing to me that my new imac didn't come with Yosemite, like advertised, because forums say my Adobe CS3 won't work with Yosemite.
Looks like it would be cheaper for me to get a 3rd party app to do the mirroring, rather than paying monthly for Adobe cc.
Unless someone else knows of another solution that would work with Mavericks instead?
    Thanks again!!!

  • Peripherals won't work with Yosemite

I switched to Yosemite in autumn 2014 and it worked. Since I moved house and reassembled my Mac Pro and all its peripherals I've had problems. Both of my Apple USB keyboards now won't work. They each have the same problem - when plugged in they show the cap locks green light but nothing else. My Logitech wireless mouse no longer works, yet the Mighty Mouse does. Most frustratingly, my WD Passport external hard drive with my Time Machine on it, is no longer recognised. I have searched the Internet and there seem to be literally hundreds of people who are suffering a variety of frustrations from Yosemite. I've tried a few of the 'solutions' based on the 'turn it off and turn it back on again' theme, all to no avail. Having bought Macs since the early 1990s, I've always championed their simplicity and reliability. My patience is being sorely tested by Yosemite. A cheap PC with the new Windows operating system is beginning to look like an attractive alternative, especially now that Yosemite is looking like Apple's version of "Vista".
Any helpful ideas would be very welcome.

  • With Yosemite I can't figure out how to make a event in a calendar "on my mac"

    When I used
    create calendar with name myCal
in pre Yosemite it would make the calendar "on my mac" which was fine because when you got a list on all calendars it would be there.
Now with Yosemite it still will only make a new cal on my mac not iCloud but when you get a list of all cals its not listed, just the ones on iCloud are. Since I can't have it make a new calendar in iCloud and applescript doesn't see the calendars on my mac, I am lost on how to add a new event in the calendar I just created. I can get an event in an existing iCloud calendar but it takes a long time (in minutes not seconds).

    Hello,
Just tried this. works fine if iCloud is switched off but when iCloud switched on then the Calendars 'On my mac" are not listed.
Not a reply to your question but do you know either how to create a named Calendar in iCloud or to rename an existing calendar in iCloud?
    Thanks,
    John H

  • Adobe Reader will not open embedded PDFs in Safari with Yosemite

Adobe Reader will not open embedded PDFs in Safari with Yosemite installed

That looks like a perfectly good PDF, but since it's trying to open in Microsoft Word, that means your file association for .pdf files is incorrect.  You should change it to point to Adobe Reader instead of Word.
If you are on Windows, see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-file-open-program#1TC=windows-7

  • For the millions trying to use iMovie HD with Yosemite

A good discussion got started in iDVD about using iMovie HD (a.k.a. iMovie 06) with Yosemite.
I am attempting to relocate some of that information into the iMovie forum.
    From jboolean:
Find iMovie HD.app, control click on it and View Package Contents. Open Contents/MacOS/iMovie HD. That seems to bypass the check.
From:  hughmass:   ( says it works ! )
I can confirm that if one right clicks all the way through, and doesn't close the terminal window, iMovie HD works as usual. I put a mp4 into it, put transitions and music, and exported.   Nice discovery as there are a lot of folks who still would rather use this application from 2006. You know, so long ago.
    Hugh
    From Old Toad:
I tried that fix and it will open but won't work further than that. That method also opens the Terminal app which lists all of the bypasses and commands  iMovie is skipping.  If you close the Terminal window iMovie closes. The project file it creates is not a package as it normally is but just a folder.   It freezes up when you try to edit an audio clip.  Then when closed it won't open the project again.
I suspect that there is some, “minor item” that is causing the iMovie HD problem with Yosemite.   Hopefully, some programming "super genius" will find a way to  lead the rest of us out of darkness.

Karsten,   One of the things I really like about you is that even when others disagree with you about “best methods” you always have sympathetic answers and great explanations.  Your technical expertise, and good humor is appreciated by me.
Quicktime will get obsolete. Now with Yosemite, the new kid in town is AVFoundation
I'm all for these improvements.  I would be delighted, ecstatic, overjoyed, to change to a new movie editor if it was half as good as iMovie HD. As you know, the new iMovie can't even set chapters!      I use chapters with Podcasts and DVDs.   I also have Final Cut Pro X.   It can set chapters but it's got way more horsepower than I need.
When I first started using iMovie 12 years ago I never read the manual.  Didn't need to.  Starting with iMovie 08, I spent hours reading manuals and watching YouTube videos trying to figure out simple tasks.  Sometimes I think I have a mental block because I started my video editing with real film using a razor blade and tape!
Nobody forces you, to install Yosemite nor to buy a new Mac
Eventually, you are forced to upgrade.   Let me give you an example.  For a number of years I was using a very high-end analog to digital converter from Grass Valley.  This device came with a terrific piece of software that would “clean up” old footage. I could do lightning and darkening, adjust colors, and filter out “Hiss”.   Well, that software was written for the old IBM processors, the company never updated it. So I was stuck using Snow Leopard (last OS to contain Rosetta) for a long time.
As time went on, I would purchase new software that would NOT work with Snow Leopard, so I was forced to switch to Mavericks.
However, you are correct in one regard; if you have a computer that is running the software and hardware that you like and you can dedicate that computer to that one task, yes, you can continue on, more or less indefinitely until your hardware breaks.  I know people who are doing exactly that so they can keep using iMovie HD.
    pretty nonsense to keep PROJECT-files
I don't keep my project files either.   I do my editing with iMovie HD, then I use iDVD to create a DVD image file (about 4 GB). That is the only item I keep.
My mind boggles at the multitude of video file formats available.  But I know this, 20 years from now I will still be able to play a DVD or at least view the DVD image file.

  • Where to now with my 'old' Apple TV?

As far as I understand the situation now with Apple TV, my 'old' ATV with onboard storage has been dropped by Apple. Does this now mean that if my current one fails I am faced with the options of either searching for a used one or abandoning my current setup altogether whereby my music files are stored on my ATV and played through my lounge stereo system?
I don't want to stream from my PC, so in dropping the ATV with storage where does Apple expect me to go?

    Chenks wrote:
maybe it's your library size, but it doesn't take 30 seconds for my library to load (284 movies, 84 separate tv seasons, 520 music albums).
True, but the bottom line is that my experience with the black Apple tv doesn't match that of the White one, airplay doesn't make up for the simplicity of just works, works well and works quickly.
i find using the "unwatched" sub-menu now makes it easier to find stuff, as 95% of the time you'll be watching something that is new anyway.
I like to rewatch a lot of my home made movies, I also rewatch a lot of science documentaries and my son may watch something in his bedroom and we may want to watch it later in our bedroom for example. The unwatched menu doesn't help at all in those cases. I think the fact that you now use the unwatched menu as a workaround and that it only works 95% of the time for you indicates that you too have found it less convenient.
Don't get me wrong, the black Apple tv is a great device, had it have been the first in the line I may not have any complaints, but when it follows the White version, it sort of feels like in some areas we've gone from the internal combustion engine back to the horse.

  • Will internet recovery work on my mid 2010 MBP with yosemite and the firmare internet recovoery update designed for OS lion

will internet recovery work on my mid 2010 MBP with yosemite and the firmare internet recovery update designed for OS lion

Yes, it does. The point is can your computer use full Internet Recovery with the firmware update or not. If not then you have to begin with the Snow Leopard DVD that came with your computer and do an Erase and Install.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
However, if you can use full Internet Recovery:
Install Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • My repaired macbook now has Yosemite. I have my photo library on an external drive loaded with Aperture 2. Now unable to do anything.

My "photo management macbook" crashed and when it was repaired it was upgraded to Yosemite. This macbook is used exclusively for photos using Aperture 2 (I also have a new Pro retina and an older macbook as well, with Yosemite and Lion loaded respectively). I have my photo library on an external drive and it was loaded using Aperture 2. Now I cannot use Aperture, cannot see photos, cannot upgrade to Aperture 3.6 and so cannot migrate photos to another software package, which I am going to have to do this year sometime.
What can I do to get Aperture working and migrate my photos?

On Yosemite you can only run Aperture 3.6, but that will not run on Lion.
If you want to get Aperture running on your photo management macbook, restore it to the previous system from the last backup you made before the crash occurred, if you have a full Time Machine backup.  If you want to keep the Mac on Yosemite, try to restore the older system to an external drive and boot the Mac from that drive, when you want to work with Aperture 2.
Otherwise your only option would be to buy the upgrade to Aperture 3.6.
