Dashboard, Repair Permissions and other tasks.

I was thinking...
Dashboard is always on, well, you can turn it off, I know at least to ways to do that. But, if it's on: can you Repair Permissions or use applications like Onyx, MacJanitor, Cache Out X with Dashboard on?
It's ok?
Is it safe?

  • Can't Repair Permissions and other issues

    Just updated to 10.5.2 and started having some video problems. The laptop won't wake from sleep, or if it does, the screen may go blank again. Also, upon waking sometimes, the mouse seems sluggish almost as if there is a remote user. Tried repairing permissions and can't get it to repair permissions. Also, when I switch users or try to authorize installations, it tells me the user name or password of one of the administrator's is incorrect and I know it's not. Very strange things.

    It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
    First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

    If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
    As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

    I also got this error this morning. DiscoBrick is just a visual plug-in for itunes that i don't even use, so i just uninstalled it and that solved my problem.
    Go to     MacHD/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug Ins/      then delete DiscoBrick.
    If you still want it you could try re-installing it again

  • FileVault off or on when repairing permissions and updating software?

    Does anyone know if FileVault can be left on when repairing permissions and installing apple software updates. I have been turning it off before doing so, but not sure if that's needed. I've been doing that just to be on the safe side.
    Using an iMac DVD, with an external firewire HD with OS X 10.3.9 on one of the partitions.

    FileVault only affects your home folder. Permissions repair repairs only permissions on installed OS packages, which are in system folders. Apple software updates make changes to system folders. Since the system folders aren't affected by FileVault, leaving FV on shouldn't affect these operations.

  • "verify disk permissions" and "Underlying task reported failure on exit"

    This is more of a "How I fixed this problem, so others can benefit" posting than a current problem.
    I put my MBP to sleep yesterday, and then when I tried to come out, it just sat there. After about 15 minutes, I figured I'd just force it quit and then restart.
    After hitting the power button, it came up with the gray screen and apple logo with spinning gear and basically sat there for 20 minutes. Several reboot attempts were failures; sometimes I got a blue screen with spinning gears, but basically not much else.
    I tried rebooting with the install disk, holding down the C key, but it gave me nothing, tried rebooting in verbose mode, tried doing CommandOption+PR, nothing, etc. So, I tried rebooting while holding down the option key, and I could see the Disk Utility.
    I ran the Disk Utility to verify the disk, and that all came back fine. So, I ran Verify Disk Permissions, and i spit out "Underlying Task Reported Failure on Exit". The phone support people suggested I try reinstall with archive.
    So, I tried running install with Archiving, and that failed as soon as it verified the DVD was ok - basically it couldn't access the HD.
    So, I rooted around and did the following. From the Install disk, I selected "Terminal". Then, I did:
    cd /Volumes
    ls -lt
    There I noticed that for some odd reason, Macintosh HD was listed as the following permissions:
    rwxrwx---
    So, admin and group had read-write-exec access to the Mac HD, but others had nothing, which I thought odd. It seems like you should at least be able to boot the computer to the login screen, and if a user is not admin or admin group, you cannot login, but I guess that's not the way it's set up.
    So, I tried:
    chmod o+r Macintosh HD
    Then, I reran verify disk permissions. Again, I got the same "Underlying..." error. So I tried
    chmod o+x Macintish HD
    I then reran verify disk permissions, and it ran fine and the suggested that the Macintosh HD volume permissions should be set to:
    rwxrwxr-t
    So, I had the Disk Utility repair it to the way it should be, and now it all seems fine.
    This suggestion basically did not come from any Apple Support people or any forums, and it seemed like such an easy fix that I'm surprised nobody (at least nobody I've found) has had the same problem or needed the same fix.
    Further, I think figured out what happened. I took my computer to my local tech support guys because I wanted to turn off sharing for this MBP. So, under Macintosh HD, somebody changed the permissions under "Everyone" from "Read Only" to "No Access".
    It turns out that doing this basically creates the whole problem above by making the Macintosh HD unmountable or inaccessible.
    I find it truly odd that it would be so easy to remove access to the computer for mounting purposes, but this is the only thing I can think of. The tech guy realized his error and apologized and was also surprised it was so easy to hose the computer.
    Anyway, this is partially a warning to everyone as well as a possible fix for the blue screen problem, especially since it was a solution I could not find anywhere.
    Maybe Apple Support will see this and for its next update at least make a warning box when people try to remove "Read Only" access for "Everyone".

    If your Mac still boots and runs most applications correctly, but applying Software Update packages fails and you decide to run Disk Utility to Verify Permissions and it fails almost immediately with the "underlying task reported failure on exit" explore this posting. If you see other errors, have slow/varied disk performance, or hear nasty grinding/clicking sounds you have a much more serious problem this solution isn't for you.
    Use Applications, Utility, Console and check the messages appearing there each time you try Disk Utility. If you see:
    Failed to open database on '/'. Error 14, 13, Permission denied.
    You may have had your permissions reset on the receipts db. Which is found in
    /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
    At this point you have to enter the dark world of the Terminal and use a unix shell (command line).
    If you are not comfortable doing find a Unix/Linux power user.
    The simple fix for me was to open Applications, Utilities, Terminal and do
    sudo chmod 755 /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
    This allowed Disk Utility to read the file and move on to repairing permissions.
    When things generate error messages in the GUI part of Mac OS X ...always go check the messages in the logs via the Console in Utilities. These messages are 'down a level' and get you much closer to the real problem.
    Note that I did follow the instructions in Apple kb TS1901

  • Safari and other tasks fail to launch

    I have a problem similar to others' descriptions of Safari not launching, but have not found a repair yet. Hardware is a G4 PowerBook, connected by built in ethernet to local router connected to cable service. System is 10.4.6, freshly installed following an ugly system crash, requiring reformatting of the hard drive. iTunes radio works, network diagnostics says all is well, pings are not lost, and another computer (this iMac) connects fine. Safari has worked on the Powerbook since the update, but seemed to come and go. Right now it's gone.
    The Powerbook does not run help, mail, software update, or Safari: mail and Safari bounce briefly and stop trying to do anything. Software update just churns. Help does not seem to do anthing. Tried removing all cached, preference, and other library files associated with Safari, as mentioned in earlier posts, without resolution. Tried reinstalling Safari by itself, after trashing all Safari related files, no improvement. Tried deleting mail prefs, too, no change. I'm a little suspicious that it is something more fundamental, since there are at least four internet-related tasks that currently fail.
    The only ominous thing that has happened lately was that while trying to reinstall applications, the installer got hung while "finishing," running an X11 installation script with "less than a minute" to go for about ten minutes before I gave up on it and forced a quit. Not knowing the state of installation of the other apps, I reinstalled them without X11. So X11 could be a mess right now, but Safari ought to be OK.
    What should I try next?
    I have not had these problems at all with the iMac, which is running slightly later software. Perhaps fragile features on the Powerbook have been repaired - I hope so. The Powerbook has been more frustrating than Windows for most of a year, now.

    This is typed on a G4 (1gHz) running OS X 10.4.10 - and running very well.
    I strongly suggest that you do not "reformat," whatever that is. If none of my suggestions help, I would do an archive and install:

    An A&I installs a pristine copy of OS X (you would, of course, have to update) while retaining your files, folders, and settings.
    It goes without saying, but everyone should have a good backup/retreat strategy. I make bootable clones of my iMacs on external firewire drives using a little program called SuperDuper ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com). In that way, I can always fall back in the event of hardware or software problems.

Ran the permissions check in disc utility and all was good. Upgraded to 10.5.1, noticed my machine was sluggish... ran permissions check again and got...

    jc, I know you said these SUID warnings have been around for a long time, I am another who has never seen them before.
    The question is... WHY are they here now? They are telling us that something is wrong that can't be fixed with Disc Utility.

    Everytime I repair permissions using the disk utility it says that the permissions are repaired, but then I click to verify permissions and it is all as it was before... What can I do?

    yes, the problem is that the file permissions are very odd. It all started when I migrated the files from one mac to another, the permissions shown are like this:
    That first everyone is a broken permissions and the disk utility never fix it. I have to authenticate to delete this files and it is boring me a lot.
    If i change that first everyone to whatever privilege it is, the file is "fixed" but it would involve changing like five thousand times, and it will not be pleasant.

    Can I make a boot disk from a downloaded version of 10.7.5? I need to repair disk and disk permissions from a boot disk, and my Leopard disk will not boot the air w/ 10.7 Lion.

    You do that by booting into recovey mode (⌘R) and running Disk Utility from there.

  • I repaired permissions and now have funky type

    After repairing permissions, the type is funky in forums, like this one, ebay and blogs. I also got: WARNING-SUID file 'System/Library/CoreS has been modified and will not be repaired. I did not modify the System Library. Is this a font issue, and if it is, what do I do about it? How do I fix it? Thank you.

    I just installed 10.6.4 and the type self corrected. I don't think the computer likes the heat anymore than I do.

  • Help Required - Ran "Repair Permissions" and lost files

    I was having a few unknown errors with my computer lately... (iBook G4, Purchased November, 2005) I was unable to print, OS 9 was not loading, and everything was really slow.
    When looking around in my computer (Only been using a Mac as long as I have had this computer), I found the disk utility and figured that would be a good place to start. After running the "Repair Permissions", I was pleased to see my computer was running quicker, and my programs were opening properly.
    Now...The problem....
    I used to have a fairly cluttered desktop...and as of a few weeks ago, I took everything, and put it into a new folder in the Hard Drive. After the Repair was finished, I found that particular folder was deleted. My Trash was still empty, and when searching for that folder, sub folders, and programs there, they were no where to be found. Also, it appears it was only this folder (It was called Main Directory if that helps at all) that was deleted.
    I have noticed, that a few of the programs deleted do have files in the "Cache" folder....But I don't know what good that does me.
    Any help in recovering these lost files would be greatly appreciated
    PS. Yes....I have learned now not to poke around and run utilities that I don't know what they really do...at least without backing up my hard drive.

    Frankly, I think there are few to any warnings that Repair Permissions throws that you should be worried about, EVER.
    People think repairing permissions "repairs" things. It really doesn't "repair" anything. It CHECKS permissions against a set of files which indicate what they were when things were installed. If these permissions were changed in some way (sometimes, this was done INTENTIONALLY), repair permissions will throw errors or warnings, which can be benign.
