Dashboard unexpectedly launches itself

I have a problem with the Dashboard. When working on the computer it frequently launches itself. I may click on a link or use the cursor when typing or click on a vertical side scroll bar and up comes Dashboard. Not always but enough to be very annoying. Any help? Is the Mouse malfunctioning?

Hi Dave, one thing to check is System Preferences>Expose & Spaces>Expose tab, see if the Active Screen Corners is set to open Dashboard, then check Dashboard setting below to see if any Keys or Mouse buttons are set to show/hide Dashboard.

Why does itunes launch itself? Last 10 days mac desktop constant interruptions

This system is not letting me edit my own post, to correct information that this system attached to my post.
This question relates to itunes running on an imac desktop running OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

  • ITunes 10.5.3 launches itself

Recently, iTunes has begun launching itself and sometimes playing songs.  I'm running Snow Leopard on a MacBook.  I don't have an iPad or iPhone, nor are there any networked nearby.  I have no checked options.  When I Quit, it immediately relaunches.  How can I stop this resource-hogging annoyance?

I have the same issue I've tried turning off the various automatic sync things in itunes to no effect
Then i tried killall iTunes in terminal. that seemed to work for a bit
it seems, however, to be the iscrobbler application I had running to automatically update last.fm... I quit it and took it out of my startup items... so far so good

  • IPhoto 08 keeps launching itself on computer boot

Suddenly after my last import my iPhoto 08 (7.1.3) keeps launching itself when ever I restart my computer. It's very annoying as it takes a long time to load.
It seems to think my LaCie external firewire drive is a camera which maybe why it keeps launching on restart. Any ideas on how to convince it otherwise?
I'm a little concerned since my iPhoto library is stored on my Lacie drive. It seems to want to import images from it but only the last import I did when the issue began. My other photos all seem to be there so far.
I'm not certain what to do. I've not encountered anything like this before on a Mac.

Also look in the System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items pane for you account and make sure iPhoto hasn't been added to the applications that are launched when the computer is booted into that account. It may have been added accidently somehow.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How do I stop iphoto from launching itself every time I use my laptop?

How do I stop Iphoto from launching itself every time I use my laptop?

    Some possibilities:
Right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock. Is Open at Log In Selected?
Check your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Log In Items
Is there a camera or anything that your Mac might think is a camera (flash drive, USB Hard Disk formatted to a FAT format, phone) attached to your Mac. If so, disconnect it. If you don't want to disconnect it, set iPhoto to "Do Nothing" when a camera is attached. You do this in the iPhoto Preferences.

  • Automator workflow launches itself all the time - even after being trashed!

I created a while back a automator workflow that I would use to crop images (in order to use them as avatars online). It didn't work so well so I trashed it.
My problem is that now, whenever I save a .pdf file or a .doc file, said workflow will launch itself. Of course, my computer cannot find it (it is long gone). I don't know how I can stop my computer from remembering it. Obviously I haven't trashed it completely. What can I do? It is starting to get really annoying.

I'm not a power user when it comes to Automator, so I might sound a little silly with my explanations. Also, I might not remember it all perfectly.
I'm pretty sure I trashed the .app I created. And by trashing I mean putting it in the trash and emptying the trash. When I discovered it was still launching itself, I used Spotlight to locate another file (I think it was in the library) that sported the same name but with a different extension (not sure what it was, but the icon was a blank page). I trashed it the same way, but it didn't do the trick.
To sum it up I trashed all the files that had the name of that stupid workflow and it is still out there.

itunes launches itself and starts playing even when my laptop is closed, but I can still hear it. I can't figure out how to keep it from doing that.

See if a device is attached and "open iTunes when iPod is connected" is selected. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16483979#16483979
Check for other iTunes preference settings that might cause this.

  • What is causing Foxfire to launch itself each afternoon or to be launched?

Each afternoon Foxfire launches itself or is launched with the five tabs shown below. This problem has been going on for about a year during which time I have spent more hours than I'd care to admit to try to resolve it.
The problem has persisted through numerous Foxfire updates. I'm running the latest version of Foxfire on Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1.
My guess is that something is causing Foxfire to launch as opposed to Foxfire launching itself. Any ideas?
    tom

hi, this looks like an issue that might be caused by adware.
please run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes], [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] & the [http://thisisudax.org/ Junkware Removal Tool].

  • Mail launches itself after quit

Recently I have noticed that Mail re-launches itself within seconds after I quit it, and also at startup. I rarely log off or reboot since I'm on a desktop so AFAIK the culprit could be anything I did in the days or weeks since I last quit Mail. It's not set to launch under my account's Login Items, nor is there anything under /Library/StartupItems, and I have never used email notifications in iCal - those are the only possibilities I am aware of; I don't where else to look. Yet something is causing it to launch - any other ideas?

Never mind - I found the cause of this. I am running GeekTool and icalBuddy, which I am using to display flagged messages on my desktop. Didn't occur to me that Mail had to be running to do this.

  • Itunes tries to launch itself (Mavericks)

My iTunes tries to launch itself if:
    The mac has recently restarted
The mac is left alone for 5 minutes with no apps running other than what it starts up with (e.g. dropbox, evernote, caffeine, etc)
The external hard disk containing the itunes library is NOT connected.
I haven't noticed this behaviour if:
    The mac has recently restarted
The external hard disk containing the itunes library IS connected.
(which is to say, iTunes doesn't seem to launch - or if it does, it's quitting itself too).
I can live with it, just be nice to know what the heck might be going on?

I can't help, but I am having the exact same problem with Windows Vista. I have had Vista for the past year, and if I have both my account and my wifes account logged in, when I start itunes under my account it also tries to start on my wife's account with the message as previously stated. I have constantly been hoping for an update which would take care of this, but today I just installed 9.2, and I still have the same problem.
I have also tried many different things to fix the issue, including uninstalling and reinstalling, making sure I am using the 64 bit version of itunes (that is the version of Vista I have). Nothing works! Any solution would be greatly appreciated, as I am forced to log my wife off every time I want to use itunes.
I should also mention that itunes is the only application which has this problem.

Any idea what might be going on?
    Thanks

I've had this happen twice, once with a CF and once with an SD. The first time was with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, and the other was with a Canon EOS 70D.
I DO use a WD external hard drive, but I don't think I ever installed the included software on my computer (I could be wrong, but it's certainly not there now). And in both cases, the drive was not connected to the computer at the time of the 'My Book' formatting and hadn't been for several days.
The only anomaly I can think of that might have something to do with a trigger is that (in the second case at least... I don't remember if this was the case the first time) the 'My Book' formatting happened the first time I put a card into the computer after the computer had been shut down for a few days.
FWIW, the first time it happened when the card was in an external card reader, and the second time it happened when a card was put into the computer's built-in SD slot.
    My details:

Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

  • Color quit unexpectedly launching

    Hello,
I work with Color for several months now. Everything was perfect until my last project (shot in DVCProHD).
When I wanted to send the timeline from FCP, Color would crash starting (with the "color quit unexpectedly" message).
I then tried to launch Color independantly, but had the same problem.
My only way to avoid this is to make a XML export of my FCP timeline, then launch Color on his own, wait the error message & then accept the relaunch option.
At this point, Color let me open the XML version from the open project window. But, when my grading is finished, its still impossible to export it back into FCP, because Color crashes again.
I can always import the rendered color files into FCP, but it makes the whole process quite uneasy.
I even tried some old projects which, at their time, worked perfectly, and the same problem occurs.
I'm ready to use FCS Remover & try to reinstall Color, but I'd gladly like some feedbacks first.
    Thank you

I post the new report I've since upgrading FCP

  • Dashboard wont launch

Hitting f12 doesnt launch dashboard, even though its set to do so.
I can launch it only by clicking the icon.
This started happening after i installed a new hard drive and re-installed osx. I also copied over the application folder/library and some other stuff.
Any idea how to fix it? I like dashboard

    Hi, nfs2.
    1. First, check System Preferences > Dashboard and Exposé and see what key is set for Dashboard. Set the desired key.
    2. Note that with your iBook, see "Mac OS X: Portables - Using Function keys with Exposé, applications, games."
On laptops, such as iBooks and PowerBooks, some of the F-keys (function keys) have dual functions:
    - A hardware function, such as Eject or adjusting Volume or Brightness.
    - A programmatic function, aka a software function, that an application program can assign, such as F9 in Exposé.
Such dual-funnction F-keys have both an F-label and a second label indicating the hardware function.
If an F-key has dual functions, by default you must press and hold the fn key, then press the F-key, in order for the F-key's programmatic function to execute, i..e. what your application expects as that F-key.
So, for example, you'd press fn-F12 to launch Dashboard if F12 was set to invoke Dashboard.
You can change this behavior by selecting Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features in the System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab. Then pressing a F-key would execute the programmatic function, and you'd have to press and hold the fn key to use the hardware function (Eject, Brightness, Volume, etc.) for which that F-key is also labeled.
    Good luck!

  • FCE 4 "quits unexpectedly" @ launch despite trying all suggestions.

I have been searching for suggestion as to what might be wrong with my FCE 4 to no avail. Despite searching for everyhting I can both here and elsewhere online, I can't fix the issue. Hoping a specific layout of the problem here might help.
Apologies up front for the long post if that's not protocol here. Just though I would cover off a lot of the questions I've seen in other threads to save everybody time...
FCE 4 has always worked fine on my machine. All of a sudden, the other day, I tried to launch it, and without any title/credit pages (in fact, without anything FCE-related displaying at all that would suggest that a launch is underway), I get the prompt: "Final Cut Express quit unexpectedly."
    I have:
    - Removed program using FCS Remover and re-installed (multiple attempts).
    - Tried the re-install with LiveType unchecked.
    - Installed Pacifist
    - Attempted to remove ".plist" file and "FCE User Data" folder, but both seem to have been removed by FCS Remover, as they don't exist (and won't until I can launch the program successfully). They also don't exist in my time machine back-ups, which is wierd...
Because I am doing a complete uninstall using FCS Remover, and the issue is still happening after re-install, its almost as though FCE 4 can't be run on this computer, which I know is impossible.
Although I had not used FCE for several weeks, no maintenance had been done in the meantime, and no other issues had arisen. This seems to be random.
The one thing I did do recently was launch ONYX 2.2 for the first time on this machine, and it seemed to do a very extensive permissions fix. Got to the "cleaning" tab of that app, and decided that I didn't have time at the moment to learn the new intricacies since the older version I had been using on my OSX.4 machine, so I quit out of it.
Here is the info I get within the crash prompt. Hope it helps.

I have followed said instructions to a tee without any success.
I proceeded to do a complete reinstall of FCE and am still encountering the same problem.

This is seriously beginning to tick me off.
Any further assistance is most appreciated.

  • IMAC unexpectedly restarts itself

I was updating an IPHONE 3G for my mother to use. During the update my IMAC began restarting itself constantly. I stopped the update on the IPHONE 3. Since then, my IMAC randomely restarts itself. I have tried turning it off, removing all cords, power, mouse, keyboard and then restarting after a minute or two. it seems to stop for a short period, but then begins again. HELP

    BDAqua wrote:
Have you tried just sleeping it at night?
It appears to be graphic card related.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
    Thanks very much for answering.
Sleeping the iMac at night would work, I'm sure, since it's only on a cold restart that the unplanned restart occurs. Not as satisfying as curing the issue, though.
Apple Hardware Test reported nothing wrong with the graphic card, but the computer is not cold by the time the test is run, so I guess that could still be it.
I'm sure there is dust inside after three + years. Apple didn't really want me to open up my iMac, but this Core 2 Duo model can be opened by lifting off the glass with suction cups, I believe. Maybe I will do that and dust, and see if that helps. There might even be something I can reseat.
Also, I believe that on my next cold startup I will try single user mode and see if that prevents the restart.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
