DashboardClient taking up 90% + of CPU

I am running a MacBook Pro (bought in 2010) OS X Version 10.6.8
I will be browing the Internet (Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, ESPN, etc.) NOT playing video, gifs. or anything like that, and my CPU will be in the 90% range with the Macbook's fans running super loud and hot. I tried moving the file named com.apple.dashboard.client.plist from my Preferences folder, draging it to the desktop and restarting. It worked for a bit, but as soon as I got back onto the Internet, it did the same thing. And again, I tried it, worked for a bit, but once again, I am left with a very warm computer, fans running on high, and the CPU being used up by DashboardClient. Because the fans are running so high, I only have about 1.5 hours of battery if I'm not plugged in, which is very annoying.
My main browser is Chrome, but I also use Safari.
Lately I've been just using the "Quit Process" on the DashboardClient, and that works for a bit, but I am still left with the problem.
I do have AppleCare, so I can use that, but I would rather be able to fix it myself.
Here are some screenshots I took of my Activiety Monitor:

Any help would be great!

OK Try this path,
Double click your Mac HD, click on your home folder, Library, Caches, then locate com.apple.dashboard.client, and follow the rest of the directions. (this is easier in the column view...at least for me, but use what you are most comfortable with.
Hope this helps

  • Program taking up all of CPU Speed

    Hello,
I have been lucky not to have to use the forum, until now. I recently installed a program called Garage Sale. I decided not to use it and deleted it (drug it over to trash from the finder window). Well,(now at least a week later) I turned on my computer this morning and it was running really really slow. I was finally able to get into the activity monitor and was able to find the problem. A piece of Garage Sale was still running (Garagesalehelper) and it was taking up to 65 - 80% of my CPU Speed. How to do I get rid of this thing? Thanks for any and all help.
    Imac G5 Isight 512MB 180GB HD 10.4.9   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, JoeCat24
To stop the offending process immediately, you can highlight "Garagesalehelper" in the main Activity Monitor window and then click the red "Stop Process" button. However, this fix is only effective until you restart your Mac or the application.
To get permanent relief, you must properly uninstall Garage Sale.. I do not use Garage Sale, so I cannot give you specific, step-by-step instructions. You will need to find the proper uninstall instructions. Some applications come with an uninstaller. Others list all the files that must be removed along with their locations
If you still have the Garage Sale installer or Readme files, check there to see how to properly uninstall. If you do not have this information, you may need to download the installer again to see if uninstall instructions are available there. Sometimes it is simpler to reinstall the application and then use the Help files to find out how to properly uninstall.
If none of those things work, I suggest that you contact the software developer and ask him for instructions on how to uninstall his app.
If this GarageSale is the app causing your problems, the developer offers email support via his "Contact & Support" link.

  • Installd daemon taking a lot of CPU

I was away from my system for a while and when I returned it was very busy. Apart from Parallels and some other programs there was this installd process that showed up in Activity Monitor. Now, I did not install anything. I quit the running programs, then it was still around. A ps -laxww provided this for installd:
        0 59528     1   0  33  0  2607456 111000 -      Ss     ??    1:30.63 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Resources/installd
Why is that process taking cpu when I'm not installing anything?

Hmm nevermind. It was probably some weird bug. iChat is back to normal here, and also normal at the other end of the chat. It was probably some weirdness with iChat's network (quite common these days!).

  • DCexport.exe process taking a lot of cpu's power

    Hi everyone!
Does anyone know where DCexport.exe comes from? I believe its used by dynamic converter is this right?
we use dynamic converter to get the html conversion from word documents to present the results on our intranet solution.
have anyone experienced problems whit DCexport taking up a lot of cpu power?

    Hi,
I came across tip for speeding up OpenLdap a while ago, I have never tested it as I have never found the need to but here it is :-
    Stop the OpenLdap service
Open slapd.conf which is under SharedServices\openLDAP\
    Locate
    *# Indices to maintain*
    index objectClass eq
    index cn,ou,cssIdentity,member,cssRoleDN,cssProductCode,cssVersion eq
    index cssDisplayNameDefault eq,sub
    and add
    index uniqueMember eq
    Save/Close
    run slapindex.exe -f c:\<location to slapd.conf>\slapd.conf
    Start up OpenLdap service again.
Though this doesn't explain the reason why you are suddenly getting performance issues, do you have a large amount of native users/groups ?
If you are on 9.3.1 have you tried Sync Native Directory from Shared Services.
    Cheers
    John

  • SearchIndexer.exe taking up 15-20% CPU after indexing complete

Machine is a Dell Latitude E6400, 4GB RAM, Core2Duo P9600 2.66Ghz, Intel 160GB G2 SSD with TRIM firmware. All OS and Office service packs and hotfixes are installed.
Rebuilt my machine about a month ago with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. searchindexer.exe has been running at 50% CPU usage when I am not using the machine and around 15% when I am using it. When is that going to settle down? Profile directory is about 26gb (mostly in downloads) and a 2.5gb Outlook mailbox.
I checked and under Indexing Options it shows that 115,692 items are indexed and that it is complete . Don't get why it's still running with so much CPU usage. I leave it overnight and the CPU runs at 50% usage the entire evening.
If I click Pause, it does knock CPU usage to nil. If I stop and disable the service the CPU usage is nil. I close Outlook 2007 SP2 it is still at 15-20% CPU.
I rebuilt my indexes, same thing. I would disable it, but I do use the feature quite often. Anyone seen a way to get this to calm down and only index when there are legitimately new items to index? Or find out what it is trying to index?

Well, I seemed to have solved my problem for the time being.  Not sure if it will return.  Here's what I did:
    1. Created another admin account
    2. Reduced my primary user to a Standard User
    3. Under "Control Panel->Indexing Options-> Advanced" I hit the rebuild button.
This seemed to try and rebuild the index, but, as I expected, it seemed to get hung up on something (not sure what).  It indexes some 9,000 files and then just sits on the 9,127th file forever.  When I am not using the computer, the SearchIndexer.exe ramps up to 50% usage, but the index still sits on the 9,127th file.  It's as if it's stuck on a particular file.  I have no idea which file.  I have read reports of MS Outlook causing problems but I don't have that.  I have read of iTunes libraries causing problems.  I do have iTunes installed, but my library is empty (should probably uninstall it).  In any case, I then:
    4. Elevated my primary user back to Administrator.
    5. Then repeated step #3 above.
This time it indexed all the files and SearchIndexer.exe took its rightful place taking up 0% of my CPU, the fan turned off, and I haven't seen the SearchIndexer.exe run since.  I have no idea if the steps I took made sense as my primary account was an Administrator when I had the problems to begin with.
My analysis so far (given the vast number of complaints I've seen) is that the SearchIndexer.exe is just still buggy software.  However, the really unfortunate part is the lack of feedback from the Indexing.  If it's spinning on one file forever, some useful feedback might be nice, otherwise users just sit and wonder why the fan is on all the time.  It's unfortunate that users have to figure out some mystical series of tricks to perform to get the Indexing to behave properly.

  • Kernel_task taking up to 800% CPU Usage

My macbook has become extremely slow lately that it's almost impossible to get work done. I've observed the Activity Monitor and realized the "kernel_task" process has been eating up most of the the CPU usage with usually 200%-300% but can reach as high as more than 800%. I've looked the problem up on the internet and found that others have solved this problem by deleting a certain .plist file. However, that solution doesn't seem to apply to me as my mac's model identifier is MacBookPro9,2 and thus doesn't have the corresponding file that needs to be deleted.
I've been going all over the internet and even a mac store trying to look for a solution but it seems I've hit a roadblock. I've become desperate for help that I've chosen to post here for the first time hoping to get your help and advice. Thank you for your time and patience.
Here are some details that might shed some light on the issue:

  • Ads taking up too much CPU

I have a lot of problems with ads in chat software, but this one's new.
You have recently started serving a new ad for the Hungarian Vodafone, made in Flash.  Sadly after a few loops it will use up a lot of CPU and render Skype itself (in particular!) unusable.
Right clicking the ad has stuff like "Some clever stuff by mito. www.mito.hu" in it.  Attached a screenshot.

In any case, you should update Flashplayer (this week and the next for the new vunerabillity fix).
    Found here : http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_ax.exe
You can also run Skype in Split view (compact view for older versions) found under view in skype main menu, without Skype home, to avoid large flash adds.
In general a normal PCs (mine is 4 years old for instance and have no issues), should not have issues with flash adds, unless there is an issue with the add itself.

  • Kernel_task taking up too much CPU after Mavericks update.

    Hello!
    I am running a Mac Book Pro 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7. 8gb 1067MHz DDR3. OS X 10.9.1
Having just installed Mavericks, I've had a bunch of problems. One of them has been a new thing called kernel_task which can take up most my CPU from time to time.
I read a previous discussion and it seemed that some audio software had been the issue for a few people. However I do not recall installing or uninstalling any audio software. @linc_davis kindly offered up a diagnostics check, am hoping he or some other kind soul can make sense of the following terminal dumps please so I can find out which app is bringing me down!
Looking at the below, I certainly havent used or wanted the BB Rim software for a long time. Will try and download that and uninstall it again. Little snitch I know and use. and same with the mouse driver Evoluent, backblaze, peer guardian, macKeeper, and google. The others I don't recognise.
    Thank you very much!

Start by following these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
Then, uninstall Trusteer Rapport. Your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed.
The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use "cleaning" or "security" products like MacKeeper. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

    Hi,
    OS system : Win 8.1 64 bit
    itune release : 12.0.1.26
Antivirus software : Kaspersky internet security 2015     release: 15.01.415 (b)
After iTunes closing the syncserver.exe process will take a large amount of CPU Process.
The problem has begins after KIS 2015 installation.
I tried to apply a procedure finded on another forum : Windows 7 compatibility mode and run as administrator for distnoted.exe and syncserver.exe. The problem remaind.
    Thank for your help

    Hello~ Chrisrob94
    My computer environment is
    OS: Win 8.1 x64
    Itunes: 12.0.1.26
    Anti-Virus: KIS2015 15.00.463(b)
    I has same your problem too. But I solved in the following way;
    File Path1:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\distnoted.exe
    File Path2:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\SyncServer.exe
    this file [Right Click] and Properties. on the compatibility tab(click change setting for all users);;;
then check run this program in compatibility mode for: and select windows 7.
also check run this program as an administrator. click apply then ok
if already running syncserver, disnoted kill it. using windows task manager.
This seemed to fix the problem for me....Good luck to you!

  • Advanced queue taking a lot of CPU time

    hi ,
My application has a workflow which dequeues messages from an advanced queue. The message is simple text message. But i am facing CPU time problems. when the workflow( one of the steps is to dequeue) runs it uses 100% of a particular CPU.
can somebody throw some light on the things to implement to reduce CPU time and why i am having this problem.
also , i am using the TOP command on UNIX to trace the process.Does it give us the correct CPU usage measure?suggest some more specific measures , if any.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
I came across tip for speeding up OpenLdap a while ago, I have never tested it as I have never found the need to but here it is :-
    Stop the OpenLdap service
Open slapd.conf which is under SharedServices\openLDAP\
    Locate
    *# Indices to maintain*
    index objectClass eq
    index cn,ou,cssIdentity,member,cssRoleDN,cssProductCode,cssVersion eq
    index cssDisplayNameDefault eq,sub
    and add
    index uniqueMember eq
    Save/Close
    run slapindex.exe -f c:\<location to slapd.conf>\slapd.conf
    Start up OpenLdap service again.
Though this doesn't explain the reason why you are suddenly getting performance issues, do you have a large amount of native users/groups ?
If you are on 9.3.1 have you tried Sync Native Directory from Shared Services.
    Cheers

  • SLAPD.EXE taking a lot of CPU Time

    Hi all,
I'm getting this stange issue on our Dev Boxes, when trying to launch a business rule, a process called slapd.exe (Open Ldap) takes up to 50 / 60 % of CPU time and it takes about 1 to 2 min for the prompts on the business rules to appear.
The system just seems to hang ...
Please let me know if you know how to resolve this,
    Cheers,
    Jeremie

  • Finder taking large percent of cpu

My 2012 MacBook Pro fan was running for hours.  I checked activity levels of the CPU and found the finder to be the culprit.  I closed the window and the fan stopped running wild in a few minutes.  I turn the finder back on and the fan is now starting to run wild again.
    Checked the disk, no issues.
Does anyone have any other thoughts?

  • Dock taking up 100% of CPU

I'm basically using my mac pro as I received it 3 months ago and four times the machine starting moving at sub-snail speed. Twice when I wasn't running anything at all. I found that the dock was sucking up nearly 100% of the CPU. Could something have gotten corrupted even though I haven't changed any preferences? I fixed this the first time by rebooting the machine and each subsequent time by doing a force quit on the dock. I'd prefer a permanent solution to this if somebody knows it. Thanks.

I am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on all three of my computers. The 13 MacBook Pro was purchased Dec 2009 with Snow Leopard installed. The 17 MacBook Pro and the iMac were upgraded to Snow Leopard mid January 2010. ALL three computers have experienced freezes due to CPU usage levels. Prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard this had not happened. Since the freezes occur on an apparently random basis I could not link it to an activity or an application. Applecare suggested Safe Boot, Reset PRAM--it is hard to say whether there was any impact since Restart clears the condition until next time. I have been leaving Activity Monitor open when I remember to open it, since it is impossible to open Activity Monitor after the freeze has started.
I am posting in this thread since yesterday I started the 17 MacBook Pro while working on my iMac. I started the Activity Monitor but didn't get around to opening any other application for some time. When I attempted to move the cursor I got the spinning beach ball. Activity Monitor showed the Dock at 60-70% cpu utilization. It also showed "activitymonitord" at 53.7%.
I am hoping that this post might bring some suggestions

  • Help!  DNSSD taking up 70-80% cpu!!

    Hello all,
Starting last night, my Macbook(10.6.7) began running at 100% cpu usage, fans going full blast.  I fired up the activity monitor and found that iAntivirus was using about 50% of the CPU.  I uninstalled it, but it didn't seem to solve the problem.  Activity monitor will show user CPU usage being at around 25-30%, and system CPU usage will consume the rest(usually about 70-75%).  Nothing was sticking out at first, as the most CPU instense process seemed to be running 5% CPU.  After staring at the list on the activity monitor for a while though, the process "dnssd" showed up briefly, listing 70-80% CPU.  I googled it, and it seems to be related to the Bonjour service in some away.  Since it appears to be an essential service of sorts, how can get my computer back to normal short of reinstalling OSX?!  I obviously can't have a laptop that's running between 75-80 celsius all the time!

I have this same problem.  After some looking around on google I noticed dnssd is somehow related to cups.  I went into Activity Monitor and quit the two cupsd processes and the dnssd went away.  Now that it went away I haven't been able to make it come back.  I tried printing (because cups is the print service) and that didn't cause it to come back.

  • CAN taking Near 100% of CPU

I have been on this problem for a few weeks now and still unable to fix the problem:
    Description of the problem:
1- When reading from 2 CAN channels with a Real-Time PXI Controller, the Processor runs between 70% and 80% (but most often at 80%). (Nothing else runs on the RT, but it will be required that more vis to run on it in the futur.) When running the vi on the Host PC, the processor on the RT controller tops at 100%. Some Data loss occurs.
2- Minor problem:  Board doesn't always reset even with 2 resets.)
Program Content (view attachement for more details):
1- While Loop at 2500us containing a sequence structure to read 2 Canbus ports in sequence. To read the CAN, I use a ncGetAttr (Read Entries Pending) followed with a ncReadNetMult.v. Data is then unbundled and set into an array in order to use a shared variable (using Real-Time FIFO). This alone takes 80% of the CPU LOAD.
2- First sequence: Canbus Reset.vi. Second Sequence has the Config (set at 1MHz), Open then CActions of Reset and Start.
    Description of Task:
Read 2 CAN channels from a UUT on a Real-Time PXI Controller (8196). 16 CAN frames per whole CAN Message per channel. The 16 CAN frames are sent in 2.5ms. The Host PC that reads the data from the Real-Time Controller at any rate (I usually set it at 4 times the loop time of the RT Target).
    FIFO Configuration:
12 elements of the CAN frame + RT TickCounter. As 64bits Double or 64 bits U64. 13 elements per array. 512 Arrays (this number varied alot). The lower the # of arrays, the more random data loss occurs, but the higher it is, the more the duration of data loss is long. Note that sometimes i get the last frame and appears in the log as many times as loop size.
    Host PC:
Reads the Shared Variable in a For Loop with the #the same as the FIFO size (or higher).
Note: Many Disable diagrams, but doesn't affect the program in any way. Its other tests done.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the replies, I fixed the loss of data, but not the CPU load by doing the following:
I finally tried Queues on the RT (didn't earlier because it was way too slow to execute when I was running my simulation on Windows). I based my vi with the NI Example Queue basics.vi. I also optimized CReadMult, I send the Data direclty into an array with I insert the Tickcount* then send it to the Host PC for it to process the rest of the frame building and then to process the information. Doing both (Queues + CReadMult) helped since now I do not have anymore loss of data, however the CPU LOAD goes up to from ~75% (at start) to 87-89% and stays there.
*Tickcount: I've noticed a weird effect with the Tickcount: I'm sending the msec time and the loop which adds it to the array is set at 2.5ms, however the tickcount read at the Host PC is always on a 10ms timer difference (instead of ~2.5) which also seems to correspond to the same loop timer as the secondary while loops that all they do is sent the information to the Host PC.  The priority of the CAN loop is 1 and the priority of the SV loops are 100. Unless i'm mistaken, priority 1 should be of highest priority and 100 is lowest (excuted only when CPU has "extra" time).
    With the Queues:
Currently it worked (without data loss) when both CAN channels are read in sequence with 2 different loops to send the informatiosn to the PC through shared variables. The RT FIFO is set at 32 Arrays of 2048 Elements. 2048 because the CReadMult seemed to have been going up really high randomly. I have not had the time to optimize the RT FIFO or really know how to cound it exactly. When using the size indicator of the Queues, they are always full. I only use Enqueue and Dequeue.
    @O_Proulx:
CReadMult seems to be the main problem of the dynamic array since the information gotten from the CAN seems to vary alot. Are you saying I should insert the data from CReadMult into a fixed array size before sending it through the SV ? I don't think that would help since it seems that the CReadMult automatically creates dynamic arrays.
     @Caleb:
Like I said previously in this post, I stripped everything down, even the bitwise operations of CReadMult to do them on the Host PC. I'm using the NI PXI-8461/2 Series 2 2-Port High-Speed Can. Next time I get time on the benchtest, I'll verify the CPU Load time when removing the SV loops.
    Thanks.
