Dashcode RSS widget - cannot connect to RSS feed?

Hi.
I am trying to set up a new widget that reads the RSS from a wordpress page I have set up for news on my site, I have the widget set to go but I have a problem. When I run the widget to test it I get an error message that says the rss feed is invalid. The feed link is here: http://www.pembsmug.org/news/?feed=rss2 (wordpress set this automatically and it seems to work in firefox) and this is the URL I enter in to the feed URL box in dashcode.
I wondered if i needed to add .rss to the end of the url so went ahead and tried it but it did not make any difference.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? this is the first time I have ever made a widget so I may have missed something really simple :o)

Type *tail -f /var/log/system.log* to check the /var/log/system.log log file while you are loading your Widget.
You are looking for Dashboard related error messages.
Good luck,
Mihalis.

  • IWeb RSS Widget Clone for non RSS?

I love the iWeb RSS Widget for displaying information. Does anyone know how to clone it so that you can use it with your own content that is not an RSS feed. I would love to repurpose it for use to display paragraphs of info on my site, without having to have it say loading and load the fake rss feed.
    Thanks!

I think it's impossible. But you can display your own content in an RSS feed, it's easy to create your own RSS feed with a text editor : http://www.make-rss-feeds.com/making-an-rss-feed.htm .
And if you find it too complicated, you can use a software like [Feeder|http://reinventedsoftware.com/feeder>.

  • RSS Widget To Display Linked RSS search?

I "tag" the blog entries on my iWeb site by writing "category-categoryhere" (of course the category name would replace "categoryhere") and then link them to a blog search where "category-categoryhere" was searched. Does this make sense? I've organized the blog entries into categories, essentially. Anyway, I wanted to display an RSS Feed from one of the categories on another page of my website, but I am aware that "&" and other special characters will not work in the RSS Feed widget, and there is a "&" in the URL, separating the RSS URL from the part of the URL that links it to the specific category. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Most likely its due to the site plan as webBasic and weBasic+ does not offer the RSS module.
The option is to either upgrade to a higher plan (webMarketing or above) or as you've initially inquired to embed a custom RSS feed.
Please note html/css is outside our support scope but if using something like this below and adding to a page or template within your site this should work.

Do you have the page that you are testing on so we can look into what you have at the moment?

  • Safari cannot connect to the App Store so I can setup an RSS Reader.

Let me be clear about a key point first - I can connect to the iTunes Store in the program, I can connect to the App Store in the program, and Safari has no problem acting as a browser.
BUT, I want to use RSS feeds and this is where things fall down.
If the Podcasts app is installed then all XML links to RSS feeds default to being opened in the Podcasts app, and I wouldn't mind this if the Podcasts app could actually display RSS feeds, but it can't. No problem, I'll just remove the Podcasts app.
Now when I click on a link to an RSS feed, Safari gives me the following error,
    Cannot Open Page
This is a link to an RSS feed. Would you like to search the App Store for apps that can display RSS feeds?
And my options are Cancel or Search.
I click Search, because when I find an RSS feed on a page I want to subscribe to I don't want to have that error again.
The App Store opens and I almost immediately get the error,
    Cannot connect to iTunes Store
However, once I click the OK option, the App Store works fine. I can connect to the App Store.
So, I pick an RSS app anyway to install it. It downloads fine, and I go on browsing in Safari. I find another link to an RSS feed, and this pops up again,
    Cannot Open Page
This is a link to an RSS feed. Would you like to search the App Store for apps that can display RSS feeds?
Excuse me? I've already installed an RSS app... and by now I've installed 5 different apps in the hopes that at least 1 of them will do what Podcasts obnoxiously did before and claim the default app status for XML links.
So, Safari works as a browser, the iTunes Store App works, and the App Store app works, but if Safari opens the App Store then I get an error. If I could somehow set which applications opened what links and document types then this wouldn't be a problem either because I could just manually set what I wanted, but I can't.
    ಠ_ಠ
What the heck? Why was RSS ripped from Safari with nary a word, leaving in its place the pathetic Reading List function? Bookmarks are for reading later, RSS is for push to me updates, Reading List is just plain pointless and a waste of code. And why can't I set what programs I want to open what file types? /rant
I've already tried the Change Date trick, the Reset All Settings trick, the Turn Off Genius trick, and every other trick I could find where ever the phrase, "Cannot connect to itunes store" popped up in these forums and on the web, and none of them work - I suspect that this is because the App Store does work fine normally for me.
All I want is for Safari or an RSS program to open an RSS feed when I click on the link while browsing the web. Why is this so darn hard?

    Hi alèna,

  • Writing an RSS widget in Dashcode.

    Hello,
I am writing an RSS widget in dashcode. Normally, I know its a very simple task. However, I need to make the RSS URL editable within the widget itself.
    I have changed the setFeedSource(attributes.FeedURL) to setFeedSource(textfield.value)
It seems to be working fine. However, I have the default value set to: "Paste RSS URL here".
The widget reads: "http://Place RSS URL here." is not a valid RSS feed.
When I go to change the value of the textfield to a valid RSS URL, the widget does not pick up the change and try to reload the RSS with the new value (URL). Instead, it just says "http://Place RSS URL here." is not a valid RSS feed.".
    I have tried a Refresh button with a onClick(refreshFeed).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much!
    -Nick

  • RSS Widget Feed Out-of-Date on Landing (Widget) Page

Yesterday there were some iWeb 09 RSS Widget feed issues that Apple seemed to fix, BUT they now have a delay worked in to the the iWeb 09 RSS Widget feeds.
I have an RSS Widget on my site's landing page at http://macroads.com pulling a feed from my articles (blog) page. When the two are compared, the Widget feed is yesterday's news
If Apple is spooling the Widget feeds somewhere, what's up with that?

It finally synced up, but this is the second day in a row that articles have not appeared in a reasonable time after publishing. Both days, at least 18hrs out of phase. And, it was not ip server caching, as other parts of the page did reflect changes after edit updates.
Thanks for taking a look, but you were not noticing the RSS widget behavior as described compared to its source "Articles" (blog) page, AND I have no idea where your "feedburner" idea came from.

  • Anyone know why RSS widget gets stuck at "downloading RSS feed"

I have added a RSS widget to a page in iWeb and it just sits there at "downloading RSS feed" - when I publish the page there is some RSS feed data there but only a small amount and it's quite old.
The feed I'm using works perfectly in a safari browser but not via the widget - I'm running iLfe11 iWeb 3.0.3 (501) and OS X 10.6.7
    Any help please?

There is a whole lot of extraneous material in the feed: I'm not familiar with SquareSpace so I don't know the procedure, but I assume you've started as a weblog page with a lot of text and images and the feed has been taken from that. It's probably harmless as iTunes should simply ignore it, though it does make the feed very difficult to read.
The matter of the media file is more difficult. I'm afraid the simple answer is something you don't want to hear - give up on SquareSpace and go somewhere else. If you host your files on a normal webspace server - with only the caveat that it must support 'byte-range requests' which is mandatory, so you need to ask about this before committing yourself - you shouldn't have any trouble. Some of these weblog creation services can cause problems, though I don't know of any specific issue with SquareSpace.

  • RSS widget in iWeb. Can someone help?

    Hi There,
I am having an issue with iWeb and the RSS widget.
Having created a website for my company, i wanted to put our twitter feed on the home page using RSS. Now obviously twitter have stopped making it easy to use the RSS service, however i managed to track down the link that the RSS is on.
This link was http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=(inserttwitterna me). So i changed the last part to our twitter name making the link look like this:
    http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=bluecrewuk
This link worked on the iWeb page for about 5 minutes, and has now stopped working. Yet that link still takes me to the real RSS feed if i paste it into my web browser.
If anyone can help, that would be great!

    Hi guys,
Having a strange issue with my default RSS reader, I was connected to the WIFI at home yesterday evening, as usual multi-tasking I had opened Web browser and at the same time I wanted to refresh the RSS feeds. The phone got completely stuck with a white screen and I had no way to end the tasks, I ended up turning the unit off by holding the power button down. Ever since then the RSS widget is just stuck with (no feeds) on the screen and there is no way of opening the application, it just seizes up. I would like to reinstall the widget but have no idea of how to do so. Could somebody help?
in x-terminal type the following :
    rm .osso_rss_feed_reader/searchentries
than restart the device, that should fix it .

  • RSS - can't load any RSS feed

I use RSS daily. This afternoon it stopped working. My feeds stopped getting updated, and then I realized I cannot load any RSS feed in Safari.
If for example I try:feed://www.apple.com/main/rss/hotnews/hotnews.rss, I just see a blank safari window, and at the bottom it says... "contacting www.apple.com". It never times out with an error message. It just doesn't seem to be able to get the feed. This is true for all of my feeds, and any new ones I try to view.
RSS works normally in other accounts on my computer, so the problem is local to my account.
I have seen others post here with similar problems, but I can't find any answers for my issue. Anyone have any suggestions?

OK, Looks like I solved my problem. I am posting what I did here in case it helps anyone else with the same problem.
Over at Mac OSX Hints, I found the following post: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070916123611119
    -x- snip -x-
+"I have experienced this problem several times in the past few years, both on a G4 PowerBook and Intel iMac. For no reason, Safari will stop updating my RSS feed counts in the Bookmarks bar. RSS still functions and will update whenever a particular feed is selected, but the parenthetical numbers for each feed or folder do not change.+
+The fix is simple and doesn't hurt any of your RSS subscriptions. Just quit Safari, remove the Database3 file located in ~/Library » Syndication, and then launch Safari again. I move mine to the Desktop and trash it only after I've successfully restarted Safari and confirmed the problem is fixed. Safari will create a new file in its place.+
+Easy enough, but I've never seen it anywhere else online, and have forgotten it myself a few times."+
    -x- snip -x-
So I followed this and moved the database3 file out of the ->Library->Syndication folder, restarted Safari, and now RSS seems to be working normally.
By the way, instead of deleting the database3 file,I just moved it to the desktop, until I can confirm that everything is working correctly, and I will delete it later.
Hope this is of some help to you if you are having similar RSS problems in Safari.

  • Blog Address not working in the RSS Widget

I just updated to iWeb '09 and am trying to put my blog address into my website using the RSS Widget. However, it seems that the widget won't accept the address saying "The RSS feed source can't be reached" Am I missing something?

Throwing my hat in on this one today as well. Worked fine yesterday, this morning nothing. As you noted i can paste to the calculator widget but not back out from it. Have repaired permissions and trashed the dashboard prefs to no avail. Other widgets are still able to Copy & Paste without issue - seems constrained to Calculator itself.

  • RSS Widget problems.

I have created on iWeb a website, then a second site which has a couple of blogs. 2 blogs I'm trying to feed via rss widget to the main website. There are a couple of issues here.
    Website is:
    www.(mywebsite).com/members/index.html
    The blogs are here:
    www.(mywebsite).com/members/services/Cast/Diary/Diary.html
    www.(mywebsite).com/members/services/Cast/Whiteboard/Whiteboard.html
I've copied the url into the widget box but neither show up: feed://www.(mywebsite).com/members/services/Cast/Diary/rss.xml etc.
Secondly when I click on the link on that page it returns me to http://www.(mywebsite).com/Cast/Diary/Diary.html (missing some folders in between.
This is a bit new to me to I appreciate your help.

You can merge two domain files with iWebSites.

  • RSS Widget works locally but not on website

I used the RSS widget to insert the following RSS feed:
    feed://www.bpkids.org/updates.xml
I have also tried inserting with http:// instead of feed:// but no difference
When I publish the site and check it on my local folder, it works. But when I post it to my website, it shows nothing.
This is the first time I've used the RSS widget. It seems straight forward enought, however, I've read in these discussions that there was a bug with the RSS widget recently that was causing it not to work and wasn't sure if this is still a problem. Thanks

That is a crossdomain issue because you have the site
    accessible via www or without.
    If you use
    http://www.sneeple.com/media_test/index.html
to access that page it will work.
Here's what to do to fix it:
