Dashed line / dotted line coupon effect? FCPX

Seeing if anyone has any tips or tricks on how to create a dashed line type of effect around an object in a video, making it look like a coupon or like it was cut out of paper?
The line doesn't necessarily progress around the object in the video -- it can be a static layer. Though, if anyone DOES have tips on animating the lines, that could be cool, too!
Thanks in advance.

Familiar with Motion?
Draw a short horizontal line. Select the Anchor point tool and drag the center to the right end of the line you drew. Replicate the line. Change the Arrangement to Outline.  In the Cell Controls section, check the Align Angle option.
You will now have a dashed outline rectangle. You can publish the Size parameter and change the size of the rectangle with the Width and Height parameters from Size. You can increase the number of line segments with the Points parameter and you can animate the outline with the Offset parameter (but there's a catch.)
When animating the offset, you will have line segments extend "outside" the base rectangle shape briefly (since they are aligned to the side they are attached to, then snap to another side when the anchor point changes over from one side to the next.)
To get around that, you need to create another rectangle that is 100 by 100 and link the Scale X and Scale Y parameters (separately) to the Width and Height of the Replicator (in the Link behavior, set the Scale to 10 for both.) Drag the rectangle onto the Replicator in the Layers List and hold until you get the popup menu -- select Add Mask to Object. [PS -- you should center the Replicator AND the rectangle before adding the rectangle as a mask!] [You can create a square rectangle then select the Shape > Geometry tab and type in the exact points: (-50, 50); (50, 50); (50, -50); (-50, -50) to create the exact size you need.]
If the mask is perfectly aligned, you can now animate the dashed line and it won't look weird. You can change the width and height of the replicator and the mask will change in perfect synchronization.
You can also make the dashes longer or shorter by manipulating the Scale X parameter in the Cell Controls of the Replicator. If you made the original line white, you can colorize from the Cell Controls as well.
After that, you'll need to figure out if you want a solid color background; a drop zone or effect source/title background; what kind of text you want inside the dashed outline (or you can manually place a Basic Title in FCPX if you like); etc...
Hope this helps...  If  you need further help with this, let me know.

  • Sneak Peek #3 about the future of Photoshop: dashed and dotted lines

Zorana Gee shared another Photoshop Sneak Peek, this time about dashed and dotted lines:
Could it be useful in your workflow?

I think dotted and dashed lines with gradients sounds useful. I won't have to go to Illustrator and back to get those functions.
    BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY
I would like to see some other upgrades to the pen tool and vector masks:
    • All too often I can't really see the pen tool line when I am making a vector selection – it gets lost in the clutter. Could there be an option to assign a color to the path? Hot green or magenta?
    • I would like to be able to change the size that vector points display. If I could make the points appear slightly larger it would often make editing easier.
    • I would like to be able to select two points very close to one another and JOIN them like in AI. I don't understand why the pen tool doesn't share more of the functions of the pen tool in Illustrator such as CUT. It sometimes seems like the vector tools in Photoshop and Illustrator were developed completetly independent of one another.
Attached (I hope) are images demonstrating how hard it can be to see paths. Can you see the paths? In the first image the path is there, not selected. In the second the path is selected. This makes my work very irritating sometimes.

  • Dashed or dotted line

How can I draw a line that is dashed or dotted in word document? I know how to use the tools window, but how do I make the line dashed or dotted?
intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Special case: Dotted line fill to a Tab postion.
You can use a dotted or dashed lin to fill the space from the end of a line of text to a tab position by formatting the tab stop.
    Easier to demonstrate than explain:
    Open a New WP Document.
Set a Left tab at the 5 inch mark.
Double click the tab marker to open the tab fomat dialogue.
Click one of the three non-highlighted 'fill' buttons.
Click OK to accept the setting and close the dialogue.
    Press tab.
A line of the fill character should be inserted from the left margin (ie the end of the line of text) to the tab position.
Text added to the beginning of the line (ei. before the tab stop) will replace the fill characters it covers. Text added after the tab stop will be appended to the end of the line of fill characters.

  • Dashed/Dotted Line instead of underlined Text

    Hi All,
I am trying to build a component in which I need to show dashed or dotted line instead of underline for <mx:Text/> control.
Say if I have underlined text in various places in a <mx:Text/> I want the that text should be underlined with a dashed/dotted line but not complete solid line.
How can I acheive this...? Anyone having any ideas on this ...?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bhasker Chari

    Hi GordonSmith,
Thank you very much for replying...I also had this thought in mind but it would be very difficult it seems because inorder to find the coordinates of each character where the underline is there and push the coordinates into an Array by traversing the whole text and after that we need to draw the lines onto th e UI using the drawing API.
And one more thing I have observed is using the drawing API(by drawing using sprite) we need to add the sprite to the stage so we need to draw for each and every  underlined character using sprite and we need to add it to the stage.
Say if the <mx:Text /> control is in a canvas container then we need to add sprite instance drawing dotted underline for each word and add it to the Canvas container...but this will make the positioning of the dotted line very difficult.
    Hope this makes sense....
    Thanks in advance,

  • Colours in dotted lines (illustrator cs3

Hello, Im trying to figure out how to get different colours into different dots/dashes in dotted lines. Here's what Im doing so far. Select dotted line, go to Objects/path and click "outline stroke". When I do this I can select indivudual dots, or shift/select several, but when I try to add colout to just the selected dots, the whole line of dots fills. Can someone put me straight on what Im doing wrong. Thanks, Readysteady

Hello, and apologies to Larry G, totally forgot to hit the "correct answer" button, and have I believe, done so now.
Wade, we can go back and forth with this all day for lots of days, but I would like to point out one more thing about perogative's, or to be more precise, your perogative. It was your perogative to ignore my question after your first answer didnt work out for me, until it was addressed by others. Let me explain a little further. I dont own a machine with Illustrator on it, but have access to a friends, (consentually) for a couple of weeks while she's on holiday. Its not my fault the clip doesnt work on this machine, nor is it my fault that the "release" option was greyed out even though the line was most definitely selected, but you made assumptions right there didnt you. You chose to believe that this was going to be far more trouble than it was worth, or at least, thats how it came across, and I would not let that go, being new at a program isnt a disease, and if it were its easily remedied. But, however, I do appreciate you took the time to provide an answer, and I do appreciate you probably know a hell of a lot more about Illustrator than I ever will, but have a look back at your response, it came across as arrogant, and if you choose not to answer my question, or not to continue answering my or anyone else's question, then that is indeed your perogative, but you dont have to be insulting in the process. But I have to admit I did let anger get the better of me, and maybe I should provide an apology for my part.
    Prepresspro, point taken.
    Well, its been fun, Readysteady
EDIT: Ok, just a quick edit. Wade, I wouldnt be half the person I think I am if I didnt acknowledge your movie as being Good. Installed Quicktime on my friends pc, and got sound. I have no problem admitting, had QT been installed on the machine in the first place, our verbal dual would never have happened as it is informative and quite easy to follow. (Obviously I did save the file, thinking Logically ) I wont take back anything I said earlier, but fair is fair, and credit were its due. Bet you cant wait for my next question

  • Dotted line not working on stroke with a 0pt dash

I'm having a problem created a dotted line in Illustrator CS5 using the technique of selecting a dashed stroke and setting the dash length to 0pt.
Instead of dots, I'm getting dashes with rounded ends as shown in the image below.
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but, please, let me know what it is.

I can't remove the second 0pt for dash. Once anythiong has been entered into this field, I can then only set it to 0pt.
The second part of your answer works (as a work around I guess). Thanks very much for that, I just didn;t think of it.
Why is it that I can't delete the entry in the second dash field? I select it, delete, press enter, but when I open the stroke panel, it's there as 0pt. If I select it, delete it, then tab to the next field, it fills it in with 0pt.

  • How do I get rid of the dotted line on right side of bounding box

Ever since I upgraded to CS5, I seem to have a broken dotted line along the right side of the bounding box of the png logo that was created for my company.  It wasn't there before. I've gone back to my original back up of the logo and this broken line is in all the versions now.
Whenever I use the artwork a single dash/dotted line is left on the far right, where the right vertical line of the bounding box would have been. You can see it in the image below on the right.  Its a faint white line but when printed on a banner its stark white.  The line falls just above the last "A" in Alberta.
I can use Illustrator and Photoshop basics and but have trouble when I get into problems like this.
Can anyone help me figure out why its there and how to get rid of it?
    I would appreciate any help!
    Thanks.

    Wade and Monica,
    Thanks for your help.
Wade, it hit me when you asked "why is it a png" file and I realized that I was using the wrong file.  Sometimes its hard to see the forest for the trees!  Problem for banner artwork fixed and I have now used the correct logo file so no more dotted line.
The dotted line only appears on the the png version of the logo.  There's no coloured background on the logo file.  She gave me the file as both an eps and a png file. I'm pretty sure she created the logo in Illustrator.  I've been using the png file for the website, which is what I thought it worked well for.  And the eps one for my print materials.
I have no clue why I grabbed the png instead of the eps logo file I usually use, but thanks for pointing out the obvious since I wasted time trying to fix it and was getting very frustrated at what had suddenly gone "wrong".
I still have that dotted line on the png file of the logo but I'll have to figure that out another day.
    Thanks again!
    Hasmi

  • How do I make a dotted line in Illustrator?

I've figured out how to make a dashed line (under Stroke), but how do I make a dotted line? Little round circles, one after the other that I can resize, turn into a circle, stick to a path?
    Thanks

The string of pearls was done on CS2
The orange "pearls" had a stroke weight of 40 pt, Dash 0, Gap 42 and a new black stroke behind with a weight of 42 pt.
Then the stroke was copied, coloured just white and moved a bit to make the white "highlights". Weight 10 pt, Dash 0, Gap 42.
I suppose, if one could be bothered, it would be possible to make a string of pearls with alternating big and small pearls by using a combination of dash settings on New Strokes. Should work all right as long as the Dash is a constant or an exact multiple. I can't be bothered!
I don't understand that bit about having the last gap as 0. The pearls came out fine with just one setting for the dash and one for the gap. The other boxes weren't filled in.

  • Apex 4.2: Help text to show as dotted line instead of default circle

    Hello
I've entered help text for most fields on a long form.
The help text icon is a grey circle with a question mark in it, which displays to the right of the page item.
Occasionally, the help text icon doesn't fit on the line, and displays slightly or entirely below the page item.
I'd like the help text to display instead on hover of the page item label, which should display a dashed or dotted underline.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

  • Drawing dotted lines

    Hey
I've already figured out how to draw dotted lines so that's not the questions
the thing is I only need to draw some lines as dotted, some as dashed and all others just normal..
I figured I could make radiobox to select which line.. then I save that to an array of some sort and then in the paintComponent thing I should make an if to check for array value and change the stoke according to that
so far I've just made my lines dotted like this
    http://www.jguru.com/faq/view.jsp?EID=114099
but now everything is dotted.. even the borders around my buttons..
ni my applet I have some buttons which are connected with a line.. I want that line dotted or dashed when the users wants it to.. and only then otherwise just normal lines
I couldn't find anything about that on the google =(

    done!
now I want to be able to use diffrent line style combinations but it doesn't work
currently it only uses the linestyle that you selected for the first line and then uses that for every line after that too
    this is my code
         public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {

  • Smartform : Require a dotted line for a window

    Hi,
Can you please provide a way to have a dotted line for a window in Smart forms.
I have used the ‘Template’ options ‘Dashed Lines’ (of the Tab ‘Grid’), but not successful.
    Regards,
    Karuna Reddy

    Hi Karuna,
I dont think it is possible to draw a dotted line dynamically for a window. Whereas you can do one thing, in a text element draw underscore's(_) or dots(.) but this should be the last to be displayed in the window. Make sure the window width is for the full width of the page or else you wont get the dotted line for the full width of the page.
    Reward if helpful.

  • Simple dotted line?

I have stroke chosen. I have dotted chosen, this is in CS4.  I chose rounded caps.  I chose 1 pt stroke and 1 pt gap with stroke 1 pt.  I use the pen tool or the line segment tool and draw it.  No dotted line.  I try selecting it.  I only get a regular line.  I really can't figure it out.  The line segment or pen tool doesn't see the setting.  Why does it have dash gap dash gap dash gap 3 times?  So you can change the pattern.  I only want...........................  just like that.
thanks,  when I have the stroke selected as dashed why doesn't my pen tool do it?

First you go to the appearance panel and there is a fly out menu from the upper right make sure that New Art Has Basic Appearance is unchecked.
Then the first thing you should understand is that one point is very fine and at fit to screen magnification you might not see the dotted line with the specs you have stated.
Then to understand how to make dot with the dash option might not sound at first logical to you but it actually is logical.
You choose the round end cap as you did but you only need to end caps to make a dot so you simply give it a dash of "0".
That means you have to give more than 1 pt gap and the round end points extend beyond the end point of each dash a .5 pt on each side leaving no real gap so the setting has to be 2 pt.
If you gave it a stroke of two then the end caps are still "0" but the gap is 4pt.

We cross posted i think it is because the line is to thin for OP to notice that it is dotted.

  • Create dotted line

I need dotted lines in the piece I'm making for the web. The only way I can get it is to bring my Photoshop doc into InDesign, put in the lines (Japanese dots, not dashes!), export as pdf and open the pdf in Photoshop. Cumbersome workaround and degrades the quality of the ending jpg. Is this the only way to get a dotted line in Photoshop?? Thanks

Create a Brush Preset of the proper shape and set the Spacing as high as necessary in the Brush Panel.

missing photo has dotted line border

What is it, that you see or don't see? Empty rectangles surrounded by a dashed border like marching ants? In the browser or the viewer?
If you do not see the images in the browser, then you have a problem with your thumbnails, not your previews. Try to select all of the empty rectangles and select (from the main menu bar)

If you want to recreate your Previews, in case they do not show properly in the Browser, hold down the options-key while you select "Update Previews".
