DAT-- Toslink cable-- MBP--- Logic

Hi, folks... Need some help with direct recording.
I've got lots of DATs (digital audio tapes) that I want to convert to aiff or mp3s. My DAT deck works great (Fostex D-5), the Toslink cable feeds the digital audio stream just fine to my MBP (@44.1kHz) and I know I've got signal coming in because QuickTime can record it, but how do I tell Logic Pro 8 that I want the new channel strip to pipe in from my input jack that's getting the Toslink cable feed signal from the DAT deck, rather than my iSight MBP mic?
If anyone knows how to change this input setting form iSight mic to optical input jack on the left side of the MBP, it would be really helpful. Thanks!

• My MBP display is not working.  Need to move data to new MBP Retina.

Hello.
My 3 yr old MBP display failed (display just showing vertical and horizontal lines).
I bought a new MBP Retina today.
Genius Bar told me to simply attach FireWire, then press "T" on old MBP to boot in Target Mode.
Then, look for old MBP HD icon on new MBP Retina desktop.
I cannot find old MBP icon on desktop.
I cannot transfer data from old MBP to new MBP Retina.
Any help would be appreciated?
Ken

Genius bar told you right - you need to start your old MBP up into target mode (booting while hold down the T key) but you need to have the right FireWire cable hooked up to the machines before you boot either. What year is your old model? Does it hve FW400 or FW800?
Here are the instructions from Apple - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661. Take a look at it and see if it helps. Also make sure that you have the Finder set so that external and remote disks will show up on your Desktop. When the disk mounts you can either just copy over files or, if you want to transfer accounts and associated directories, use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder to copy over the info.
Good luck - call back if it's not working.

• How do I share data between my MBP and iMac?

I have two Genealogy programs on my iMac that I would like to share data between my MBP and the iMac.  I would like to gather the data on the MBP and then share new data to the iMac which is where I basically do all of the Genealogy work from, since it is much easier with the larger screen and better keyboard.
Can someone please explain or direct me to a tutorial or procedures if this is possible?  Thank You!

Click Apple>System Preferences>Sharing
Check File Sharing. In File Sharing add the folder you want to share with another computer. Then add users. Then proide access previledges such as Read & Write, Read Only, Write Only or No Access.
Now in the System Preferences, Click iCloud, sign in to iCloud. It's free and you can access your Macs from anywhere.
In iCloud, check Back to My Mac.
Do the same to another computer. You're all set by now.

• Does the new Macbook Pro 13" support TOSLink cable (audio out)

I just bought new Macbook Pro 13" (April, 2010) and I want to connect my Macbook to AV receiver or home theater to decode DTS digital sound. Can I use the TOSLink cable (mini 3.5mm jack to Optical) with Macbook Pro 2010 audio out ? (My AV receiver does not have HDMI input but have Optica).

• Mini-toslink cable for Lower East Side speakers?

Hey,
I have my iMac teamed up with a pair of Audyssey Lower East Side media speakers and I recently bought this mini-toslink cable from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003UU7XQQ/ref=pe_385721_37038051_pe_217191_31005151_ M3T1_dp_1).
The problem I am having is that the toslink connection into the rear of the LES's seems exceptionally lose and I have to fiddle with it to get it in a position where the sound stays solid without cracking up or disapears altogether.
When the connection is stable they sound amazing but I didn't expect a standardised connection type to be so lose!
Can anyone give any advise? The guys at Audyssey are saying that it is "common" for different optical cables to fit differently which to me sounds a bit odd?
Is anyone using a mini-toslink cable with these speakers that fits snuggly into the speaker? If so I would love to hear which one so that I don't end up having to buy a multitude of them to find one
Many thanks in advance!

An optical connector if fitted correctly should never be loose. Ask to test other cables in a shop that sells them, if you get a good fit buy it, if they are all loose, take the speakers back and get a refund.

• Can I use flash drives to transfer data from one MBP to another at a differ

I've looked and cannot find any info on the use of flash drives. Can I use a flash drive to transfer data from one MBP to another one at a different location? (ie; school Apple and home MBP) Grade tests and papers at home, enter data into home computer, then put it on flash drive and carry flash drive to school, transferring data to school desk top? Are certain flash drives preferrable over others, name brands, size, etc?

Yep, you sure can. Just about any drive will work as mentioned above. But I'm partial to SanDisk and PNY. I've used both and they work great! Currently I carry both a 2GB SanDisk Micro Cruzer and a retractable 2GB SanDisk Cruzer, both really nice. Replaced my oldie but goodie 256MB PNY drive that I've been using since they first came out.

• True 5.1 surround sound from headphone port over a Toslink cable?

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP690 page regarding the headphone port simply says: "Support for audio line out (digital/analog)". So, in planning a purchase I have the following 2 questions:
1. Does the newly released 15" MacBook Pro w/ Retina display have the ability to output true 5.1 surround sound or is it only able to output simulated surround sound? In other words, does the newest MacBook Pro decode the 5.1 signal (separate outputs front center, fronts, rears and subwoofer) over a Toslink cable pluged into the side headphone jack?
2. Using the above confuguration will the new MacBook Pro be able to play true 5.1 surround sound on HD movies purchased or rented from iTunes?

Probably:  http://osx411.com/index.php?/topic/38-hook-your-macbook-pro-up-to-your-surround- system/

• Just set up an apple TV device to stream music from my laptop to my DAC then into my pre-amp. Set it up on the Tv but then unplugged it and plugged it into the DAC via a toslink cable. No output. The streaming icon is blue on menu bar. That right?

I've just set up an Apple TV device to try and stream audio from my laptop Pro to my DAC, then into my pre-amp. Set it up using the TV screen
but then disconnected it and plugged it into my DAC via a toslink cable. But no output. I don't need it for TV, just sound streaming.
The streaming icon is showing blue on the menu bar - is that correct? Any ideas? Thanks

• Can't migrate date from old mbp to new mbp using maverick

Hi have a new MBP 15 and 1 old one 12 maths old bothe running maverick. Have been trying to migrate data from older MBP but they keep disconnecting as soon as the transfer is about to start.

Use the Setup Assistant during your initial setup of the new computer. You will need to connect your old computer to the new computer to do this. You can do this using a current Time Machine backup of the old computer if you can connect the backup drive to the new computer. See Target Disk Mode and About Windows Migration Assistant.

• Need toslink cable for my X

Hi, my PC has the Creative and was wondering if a would work in connecting my card to an optical device.
Basically, I want to know if my card is able to use Toslink-to-mini, or would i have to buy the I/O module and just have toslink-to-toslink.

That card does not have mini toslink. The only way to use the digital out is with the digital i/o adapter.

• New MBP logic board and wireless internet does not work anymore

hi there
i had to change the logic board in my only 2 years old MBP15". i purchased a new one and put it in by myself (relatively easy task). i still use the same internal HD as this one still works fine, so all data are the same.
however, the new logic board has obviously a different "identity" from my old one, it came with a sticker which says "ethernet ID 001FF3513E7A" which is different from before. this may be the reason i can still access my wireless network at home, but the self assigned IP address prevents me from connecting to the internet. all settings are as before and it worked always without a problem.
all settings were "automatic" before (using DHCP), and i use exactly the same settings again, but no success. i have to add that i use a new mac mini in the same network with absolutely identical settings (automatic) and this one receives a free IP address from the router (which is only in the last number different from the router's), but the MBP shows a totally different IP address.
i could finally fix it switching to "manual" and adding the same IP address the mini is using and just changed the last number, which has to be different from the time capsule i use as wireless device and the mini. like this everything works just fine.
but why does the mac mini perform everything automatic and the MBP (even with the new ethernet ID - and especially since i connect wireless and not using ethernet) is not able to do so?
i worry if i want to use the internet in any wifi hot spot i may run into troubles...
any idea what the difference between these two machines (with identical settings) is?
thanks and cheers
george

Thank you. It didn't work unfortunately :((
Here are my router's details (Huawei):
Product name HG655b
Device ID 00E0FC-21530307237S0B028701
Hardware version VER.C
Firmware version V100R001C02B018
Batch number RWC3P0.010.29066
Physical address 5C:4C:A9:A5:41:B0
System up time 0 days 0 hours 15 minutes 56 seconds
I don't have Mac filtering enabled.
Now it doesn't even find the wireless network anymore...
My computer and itouch are connected to WAP, but the iphone could not connect to WAP, but only WEP.
Any other ideas?
Thanks a lot!

• DMZ VLANs in the Data Centre - Physical or Logical Seperation

I am building a new DMZ in my Data Centre and I'm looking at the merits of Logical Seperation rather than Physical Seperation.
Instead of putting in some new DMZ Switches and then physically cabling all the DMZ devices and Servers to these switches so that these are physically seperate from the rest of the DC, I'm thinking of connecting them up to the existing DC Switches and just use a different set of VLANs with the routed interface for these on Physical Firewalls.
Can people please appraise me of the concerns or issues with this? Are there any articles or design papers on this?
Thanks

Come on guys I expected someone to at least make some form of comment!
It looks like either the community doesn't know or doesn't care!

• Can't get automation data from RMX into Logic

I'm usinga tutorial that shows a simple way to use the RMX interfaceto write automation data to the master channel using RMX as a multitimbral instrument. It shows that you simply put the track in touch mode, engage play, and then move things on the RMX mixer. I can't get it to work this way. What am I forgetting?

Funny this is coming up, I'm doing this right now.
Try this:
Instantiate a mulit RMX on instrument 1. Create a multi instrument object in the environment. Don't cable it to RMX yet.
Create a transformer object. Double click the transformer. Okay here we go, follow close:
Under "Conditions" enter
Status = Control
Channel All
-1- = 7
-2- All
Under "Operations" enter
Fix Fader
Fix 2
Scale 1.0000 2
Thru
Now you'll see three black vertical lines in the middle. Click the middle line twice. This will cause you to have:
1st line: Vertical
2nd line: Starts at top of first line and goes diagnally down
3rd line: Vertical
That's if you want the Logic volume sliders to control the RMX volume sliders in RMX's mixer page. You have to cable it with the multi instrument to make it work...that's down below. Don't check "Filter Duplicate Events".
Here's the way to change the pan:
New transformer:
Under "Conditions":
Status = Control
Channel All
-1- = 10
-2- = All
Under "Operations":
Fix Fader
Fix 2
Scale 1.0000 10
Thru
Now Logics pan pot on the RMX multi controls the pan on the RMX Mixer page.
Now cable the multi-instrument object you created the first transformer, and then that transformer to the next, and then that transformer to instrument one. You're set!
Ok, now why does this work? I mostly understand it...
On Instrument 2, put a multi RMX plugin on. Now in the environment, create a monitor object. Cable Instrument 1 to the monitor object (don't cable the monitor object to Instrument 1, won't work).
Now with the environment page and monitor object still in view, open the plugin RMX on Instrument 2. Go to the mixer page. Move the volume slider for multi 1. You'll see some data show up in the monitor. Here's what it means (sort of):
You'll see something like:
2 2 92
2 2 91
I'll start by saying that the last number is just the volume value. Move the fader and it changes accordingly. So this number isn't important for this example.
The first number, 2, is related to RMX as an instrument. That's the 2 in:
"Operations"
Fix Fader
Fix 2 <---------
The next number is associated with multi one's volume slider in RMX. That's it's number. If you move multi 2's volume fader, you'll see:
2 3 91
2 3 95
And for multi 3's volume fader in RMX:
2 4 91
2 4 92
So that's why we get this:
"Operations"
Scale 1.0000 <----- because we're moving in incriments of 1, RMX Multi 1 had 2 as a second number in the monitor, RMX Multi 2 had 3 as a second number in the monitor, RMX Multi 3 had 4 as it's second number in the monitor
and then:
"Operations"
Scale 1.0000 2 <-------because the first fader, multi 1, STARTS on 2.
Okay, so that's what the monitor tells us. You can delete that monitor object now, or keep it there if you want to control other RMX values with Transformers.
So now the other parts....here's where I'm guessing, anyone can chime in here and correct me...
Under "Conditions"
Status = Control <-----because you're going to control the desired RMX fader/pot with your input of a continuous controller #.
Under "Conditions"
Channel All <---don't know why, but it is.
Under "Conditions"
-1- = 7 <------- That "7" is the continuous controller number of the volume sliders on the multi instrument channels in Logic. Here are other useful ones I've found in creating the mega autoload:
10 = pan knob on Logic multi inst
91 = reverb knob on Logic multi inst (i use this to control the amount of Aux 1 FX on any given RMX mutli. As a side note, RMX Aux 1 is:
"Operations"
Scale 5.0000 35
And then the subsequent Aux 2 is 36, Aux 3 is 37, and so on)
93 = chorus knob on Logic multi inst (I use this for Aux 2 FX)
74 = Frequency knob on Logic multi inst (i use this for Aux 3 FX, although you have to slam it to the left for 0, because it defaults in the center like a pan pot).
As for this:
"Conditions"
-2- All <------
And this:
"Operations
Thru <--------which is right below the -2- All
I think because we're not using those to change and "Transform" values, you just leave them the way they are.
Hope this helps! I'm sure more can be added by the genius dudes who roam these parts...
Tyler
