Data Asset Manager, Drive or Terminal ideas

I have about ten to twenty HDs with various scraps that I've collected over the years. I'd like to organize them, find duplicates (or dump the files for good!).
Anyone know of a good Data Asset manager? Any one use CDFinder?
Is there a way to use Terminal to generate a list of all the files (not folders) on a drive that I could export into Excel or FM and manipulate? (I have nearly zero terminal experience...)
Thanks for any suggestions
D.

Start with a google search for *list files in directory unix* for a Terminal command.

  • Bridge for data asset management?

I've been looking for a while for a 'simple' data asset management application.
What it should be able to do or have is:
    1. a simple interface, manageable by anyone.
    2. both mac and windows compatible
    3. drag and drop facilitated for both images AND their description into inDesign.
Why?: we work for a large mall group, that produces some 20 large folders a year. No need to say we have built up an image database of thousands of items, most of which are reused regularly. Locating them for use in a new folder is not such a problem in itself; but reusing the text is. Each time, our client provides more or less the 'same' texts and prices (they retype them), which means that all texts, whether they have been published 10 times before or not, always have to be reread, reviewed by a copywriter, and on top of that, retranslated (in Belgium, you always need editions in Dutch and French). This is a silly and costly situation.
I love to use Expression Media for comparing pictures, and it's drag and drop capable - for picutres - not for text. Bridge doen't seem to do the job either, and it's not an actual database.
So is there a simple way or application (affordable) to get over this problem, without the need of some complicated Unix-based, nerd-interfaced server?

Did you tried to explore Canto Cumulus ?
They have two editions, the 'single user' (very affordable) and a more complex build to order. When you have many users on different locations or use over a network it might be to complex for the single user version I'm afraid ;-(

  • Meta data and data asset management

I am looking for suggestions and or products that can support managing our footage.
Our goal is for an editor to search for a clip using the  data entered in the “description” (metadata) field of clips and sub-clips  that have been logged in various projects.
    Here is the outline.
We record clips of high def footage and we import batches of these clips; sometimes a few dozen,  and sometimes thousands.  We bring these batches into a Premiere Pro CS5 project by importing the video clips from within a P2 card folder structure, or avchd, or dslr footage or ??/any format we collect...
We log a description of the clips and of sub-clips, and then we edit a film from those elements.    After 1 project, or after 50 projects, we have all the detailed description (metadata) we've entered about each clip and sub-clip captured, and this data lives within the CS5 project. We can only search it from within the original project.
If we start a new project and we need to look back at footage from old projects, we can only search for footage by going into that old project .  We would like to have the metadata write back to our archive (or a copy of the footage in a new archive.)  If the archive and the clips and sub-clips had the metadata from the project we could search and find assets.  Among the obstacles is that sub-clips share the name of the clip it comes from so there is no “place” for it’s metadata.  We've tried using Project Manager>Collect Files & Copy to New Location but the subclip .mxf files created through this process are copies of the source clip despite being labeded "random.subclip001".   When imported, this "random.subclip001" file shows up in Premiere as the original "random" source clip name.
We are looking at a small library – but it’s big for us.  About 20 terabytes…  A typical client might have 4-6 terabytes of assets we would like to look through for a shot, or an interview…  Has anyone made inroads on this?
Many thanks for any thoughts and ideas.
    Sincerely,
    Rees Candee

    Hi Abhilash,
    Meta Data-
In BW the meta-data contain data about data.
It is like having information about the information.
You have the business related meta-data for example the description used in your reports or the technical related meta-data for example the rules used in the transformation or the extraction. These are the two types of meta-data you have in the metadata repository that you manage with the metadata manager

    Meta Data Repository
It is the repository which Manages Meta Data, for example like when talking about an ODS in the metadatarepository you can read about which characteristics, key figures, infosource and updaterules are used in it. And creation date, owner etc.

    There's also FootTrack. And Frameline.
    Maybe Final Cut Server?
Finally, Aperture now supports importing video. So this might be something worth looking into. IMHO, what it has over Lightroom is that it's a better DAM solution. So maybe Aperture for video cataloging?

  • Aperture as a Multi-User Digital Asset Management Tool

Does anyone have any experience using Aperture in a multi-user environment? I'm trying to compare it to Cumulus by Canto which is designed as a multi-user tool.
I realize that each user would have a copy of Aperture on their Mac, but are there other issues that are not such as multi-variable searching capabilities of one versus the other. My gut tells me that Cumulus is more robust and can handle much larger libraries as well as all types of digital data and can search within document such as InDesign for a particular image.
    Thanks
    --Mitch

There is no possible way you can use Cumulus and
    actually save money.
I don’t expect to save money. I expect to save time finding info, and avoiding duplication of almost everything we have
Stepping into digital asset management is a far bigger
issue than your boss can imagine. Try not to take this
personally, but your initial question about using
Aperture as an enterprise or workgroup DAM suggests you
have no idea what you're suggesting or possibly getting
into. Canto is all smoke and mirrors unless you can
afford the training and have dedicated, competent and
    engaged support personnel.
Nothing taken personally. The question was asked because management is promoting Aperture as the end-all and be-all of imagement, whereas I’m looking for a tool to manage all our documents
Before you go much further, you need to understand
databases and you need to understand that DAM's return
on investment is not about saving money, it's about
preventing the spending of money; a huge difference and
there are few mgrs who can parse that difference from
the sales hype. Buy a copy of "The DAM Book" and try to
get someone to explain databases, cataloging
applications and server-based storage to you.
I understand databases quite well, but I will get a copy of the book you mentioned. I am running an Xserve in my environment, so I do understand servers and OS X Server.
I wish you tremendous luck and hope your experiences
are better than most of the Canto customers I have ever
met, including me. You just have no idea how expensively
wrong your decision to employ Cumulus could turn out to
be. Not that it's a bad product (although we thoroughly
despise it); it's sold as a miracle. Cumulus is a
    supremely complex (not necessarily complicated),
    over-designed and totally un-Macintosh application.
What version of Cumulus are you using, and why are you so unhappy with it? May I contact you off line to discuss this?
    Thanks for the reply

  • Digital Asset management

    Hi all,
I've been using idImager to keep track of photos and videos. The one problem I have found with this product is setting it up in a collaborative environment.
I was wondering what people are using to keep track of the digital assests and where they are used.
The things I need to keep track of are:
    Images
    Video (complete and clips)
    Audio files
Cubase and Ableton Live projects (and their assets)
    Adobe project files
CC Prelude looks like it is only usefult for video clip pull in.
    Any ideas?
I wasn't sure what forum to post this in. If there is a more appropriate area let me know
    Thanks
    Ian

We use WebDAM for collaboration and digital asset management. Its an awesome DAM Software . For all design activities, our entire team uses Adobe Creative Cloud. They both seem to work really well together.  Managing your images, video (complete vids and clips), audio files, projects, adobe files, and almost any file is completly supported. WebDAM also allows us to control versions, edit and control metadata, supports EXIF and XMP metadata standards, comment on assets, automatically convert file formats, set expiration dates, get automated alerts when others work on files, easy search, viewing capabilities, control access, and share/secure/collaborate on our files anytime from anyplace. Its super easy to use. Our team also loves the video module which allows you to serve your videos and clips to various websites, control versions, etc. haha, sounds like a sales pitch.  I'm pretty sure Intel, New Balance Shoes, Santa Cruz, Symantec, GE, bunch of design agencies, and almost every college uses WebDAM. Being near Adobe's headquarters in Silicon Valley,  I think their software engineers interact with Adobe consultants as well.
But I guess the question is, are you looking for something to use for your entire team, company, or just for personal use?  That will determine what type of software you should be looking for.

  • Looking for help - Company is going to Mobile Asset Management service that does not support BB - especially BB 10.

    Hello,
I am looking for ideas/help. I currently have a BB Z10 (10.1.0.2039) with Verizon Wireless.  The company has a BB Enterprise Server for older devices (I previously was on that).  I bought a Z10 several months ago and have been connecting to the corporate network through Lotus Traveler. They do not have and will not implement a BB 10 Enterprise Server. Some in IT informed that if the company used the BB software they could manage all devices..... not accepted.
All my contacts, calendar, and company email is funneled to the BB Hub.....
So my company is implementing a Mobile Asset Management Service that I have to sign up for (Airwatch?).  They only support Android and IPhone.
Will future versions of the BB OS support Android Apps.... Soon (I have less than 2 weeks)
I have read where it is possible to put the device in development mode to run Android Apps.  I don't know if that will work with this and have no idea how stable the phone is in that mode. I travel internationally so I don't know how a development mode would work overseas. Any thoughts?
I like my Z10 but will need to switch to keep functionality if I can't find a work around
    Any assistance ????
    Thanks for any help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB10 devices have the ability to run .apk apps via special methods. Development Mode is used only for installing the app...not for normal operation. So you install (side-load) the app in Development Mode, then go back to normal mode for normal operations.
If a .bar file for the .apk app already exists somewhere, you can side load it to the BB10 device and see if it works or not. If there is not yet any .bar file, there is an app called SideSwype that can convert many .apk apps to .bar and install it to your device.
    Good luck!

  • Load swf into RAM via an asset manager

    Hi.
I have an AS3 virtual world and we are continually loading external resources such as swfs and sounds.
A few of my menu screens that take a damn long time to load. Read a tut that said we should load them into RAM using an asset manager.
I'm assuning the asset manager is simply a Class used specifically for loading and unloading graphics, swfs and sounds. So the important part to ask is:
What do they mean by loading into RAM.
I thought all swfs were automatically loaded into RAM ie: cached or in the flash player cache or the browser cache. Or do I have to do it specifically myself with some code. We are importing external files so we thought that was a great idea as they are shared by many games.
btw: RSLs I have read about but I don't understand. I thought my externally loaded files were RSLs (runtime shared libraries) or would I have to do some physical coding do convert them into RSLs.
This is so important because I am not very experienced but I am getting a lot better due to help receied in this forum and my current programmer is leaving me. I have been studying up on As3 and design patterns and I understand basic coding a lot better now.
    CHEERS
EDIT: Just read that I am using a http call. - I use urlloader - well that's what you use isn't it or how would you load an external swf. Just read that you can hold the swf as a variable which loads it in RAM and therefore will be available immediately. Know I don't understand anything as I have never read that anywhere.

Hi Andrei, nice to see you around here.
Well, somebody helping me says that normally we make a http request with urlLoader to the server and that is what was happening each time. We weren't getting the cached swf. (that bit I don't understand and doesn't sound right - anyway...)
So he says if we create a dictionary class to hold that swf then the next time we make a request we will get the movie from there and not from the server.
I have highlighted the main parts of code below.
What I don't understand about all this is that I have never seen anything like this in my life. I have read extensively and read all about loading external files and using this type of asset manager with the dictionary class does not ring a bell and goole comes up with nothing.
I hunch is that as you say, we are doing something wrong somewhere because the only way to get an external file is via urlLoader to the server the first time and then the second time it should look for it cached on our computer is that right? Or when we make the urlLoader request how does it know to look on our computer first before going to the server or are these innner workings of the flash player I know nothing about. This is so important as when I get 10 kids on the computers they wait for as long as 5 minutes for movies that have already been downloaded many times before.
    Cheers in advance.

  • Problems reading my backed up data on hard drive after using Time Machine

I have a MacBookPro and had to take it in for servicing. I backed up all my data using Time machine. They had to replace my battery, hard drive, and logic board, basically wiping my slate clean. When I got my computer back and plugged in my hard drive time machine came up asking if I wanted to restore a back up. I chose the drive. Then that drive disappeared from the desktop and changed the disk name from "BACKUP" to "disk1s4" and is unreadable. Cannot get anything off the hard drive.
Any idea how I can read my data off my hard drive. I have 3+ years of pictures of my 2 kids and all my music. The rest I could take or leave. But I would be devastated to lose my pictures.
    Please help
    Thank you

    Do you mean this window?

    They are very different, obviously.
Try repairing the drive, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
