Data below black level 0 in h264 mp4 files.

I'm a little confused about black and white levels in video.
I have two questions. If you bare with me for a second I can demonstrate what I mean.
I created gradient with values from 0,0,0 to 255,255,255 in Photoshop and saved it as sRGB jpg file.
I imported the file to Premiere and added Fast Color Corrector to the file and changed black input level from 0,0 to 16,0
So now everything below value 16 is cutted to black.
I exported the edited gradient as h264 mp4 videofile.
Now things got interesting.
I imported the edited videofile back to Premiere, added Fast Color Corrector to videofile and changed black output level from 0,0 to 16,0
The information that I thought was lost is there!
I tried to to the same thing for the same video file with Photoshop and I'm not able to get the lost information back.
Why is there information below 0? And how am I able to rescue it with Premiere, but not with Photoshop?
Does this have something to do with YCbCr black and white levels that are 16-235?
This whole question came up when I calibrated my Samsung lcd-tv. I used AVS HD 709 mp4-calibration videos.
There are black level calibration videofile. Which is exactly like my gradient video file where there are black values below 0.
If you lift your tv's brightness below certain levels you are able to see the black values that are below 0.
I'm able to see these "blacker than black" values with tv's own videoplayer and with xbox videoplayer.
However, if I try to see these values with my macbook pro  which is connected to tv I can't get them visible.
It doesn't matter if I play the video with quicktime, vlc or premiere.
So the second question is why the macbook pro does not send any "below black" information to tv?
PS. I'm using latest premiere CC.
Thank you in advance!
In this image you can see from Premiere Scopes what is happening.

Does this have something to do with YCbCr black and white levels that are 16-235?
No and yes.
When you manipulate levels values within 0-255 (0.0-1.0) range, you don't clip existing data, you simply compress/decompress contrast, while information is still there (to some extent). By the way, data outside 16-235 range, but inside 0-255 are not super-blacks or super-whites (underdarks or ovebrights), they are just broadcast safe values. Super-blacks or underdarks are values below 0.0, while super-whites or overbrights are values above 1.0. The nature of YCbCr does allow to store some real super-blacks and super-whites even while encoding to 8-bit codec.
Why only some codecs are able to preserve this "illegal" values?
MOV container is... um-m-m... quirky. For example, exactly the same data encoded to e.g. mp4 and MOV with exactly the same codec (e.g. H.264), may be decoded/interpretted differently. So as to have some fun, create a copy of an mp4 clip, which contains some super-whites, rename file extension of one copy to MOV, import both mp4 and fake MOV footages into After Effects, set your project to 32-bit, sRGB or Rec.709 and linearise working space in order to get precise result while blending layers. Then drop both clips into the same composition and set blending mode to Difference. Enjoy!
Why I'm only able to access these values inside Premiere and not with Photoshop. Is Photoshop unable to access these illegal below 0 values?
Try setting Photoshop to 32-bit first. If that doesn't help, then yes, Photoshop clips values outside 0-255 (0.0-1.0) range on importing. Similarly you won't be able to get super-whites or super-blacks back in PrPro with 8-bit effects.
When i export with codecs that can preserve superblacks should I still get rid of them with videolimiter. Do they cause any problems in youtube or broadcast environments?
No. Moreover, you should take care of broadcast legal range in case of delivering to a broadcaster only, YouTube 'broadcasts' on the web and targets regular computer monitors, which operate on sRGB 0-255 range.
why the macbook pro does not send any "below black" information to tv?
That has probably something to do with Apple colour management workflow. Since I'm not on a Mac, I can't comment this on

  • Adobe Media Encoder creates corrupt H264 mp4 file

I am using Premeire Pro CS5 and exporting an H264 mp4 file from a 720x480 timeline.  For one of the files I am exporting, AME completes the export, i.e. I see a green check mark.  But the file is corrupt.  When I try to open the file with Quicktime, I get the following error:
"The operation couldn't be completed - (OSStatus Error - 12848)"
The strange thing is that other timelines exported without any problem.  And this particular timeline I could export using different (but very similar) export settings.  The only thing I'm changing is the video bitrate.  I'm actually creating three different videos for adaptive bitrate streaming, 300k, 550k, and 800k, all from the same video.  The 300k version is the only one that won't work.  But again, what is strange is that other timelines export out fine using the same exact 300k export settings.  It's just this one timeline that won't export without getting the mentioned error.

    I having the same issue.
    Any insight on a solution?

  • WAD Problem: data below 6th level of Hierarchy is not displaying.

    Hello Experts,
I am executing a template in the portal and while giving selections for particular 'cost element' in the selection screen, the message is coming saying no records available.
There are 9 levels of hierarchy and up to 6 levels the data is coming properly but for the remaining three levels the data is not coming although records are present for the other three levels as well. While the same query with same selection is working fine in RSRT/ Analyzer.
    Please help me out.
I am new to WAD also please let me know if there is any settings for dispalying hier. node in WAD.
    Thanks in advance.

If you just want to display the Hierarchy Level (not filter or sort by it), try just turning on the display of the attribute on the query and/or report, instead of making it a navigational attribute.
    Hope this helps...

  • Premiere is making corrupted H264 Mp4 files,  why?

I am exporting a series of [nested] sequences as H264 NTSC Mp4s.
If I export one sequence then it works fine and I can play it in Quicktime etc.
If I export this nested sequence of five timelines, then it produces a corrupted file that no program can use.  It complains that the file is unsupported or corrupt.
I have noticed at the end , Premiere is stuck on 99.9% progress for 18 minutes.  So I don't think it's finishing the file off properly.
    Any ideas?

Mr Bansaw, did you sort out your MP4 export problem? I have a single non-nested 10 minute sequence. Using a slightly modified AME HDTV 1080p 25 HQ preset to export to H.264 mp4 as follows:
PAL, 1920x1080, 25fps, progressive, VBR, 1 pass, Target 10Mbps, Max 25Mbps, AAC 160kbps, 48kHz. (I dropped the target bitrate from 35Mbps in the preset thinking that might be the problem, but it didn't make a difference).
The export seems to go fine ie without errors, but playing back the exported mp4 gives the occasional but noticeable stutter using VLC or WMP (ugh).
I will be projecting the video on a large screen so need the best quality.
    I am using PPro 5.0.3 on an Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, 4 x 1TB 7200 HDD, ATI Radeo 4870 1GB, Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.
    Any suggestions will be welcome.

  • Jerky Motion of MP4 file

Problem: Jerky Motion of MP4 file
    Adobe Production Suite CS4
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    I have the following composition:
    Composition: 1280x720 HDV/HDTV 720 29.97 square pixel
    Layer: 4288x2848 jpeg image
    Duration: 15 seconds
    I slowly rotate the image.
In AE, it plays smoothly using the space bar.
    I render as
    Container:  MP4 file
    Codec: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    Size: 1280 x 720
    kbps: 6176
    Frames/s: 29.97
GSpot says the created MP4 file looks like the following:
    Codec: avc1
    Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    Container: mp42: MP4 v2 [ISO 14496-14]; - mp41: MP4 v1 [ISO 14496-1:ch13]
    Recommended Display Size: 1280 x 720
    Size: 1280 x 720
    kbps: 6176
    Frames/s: 29.97
    Pics/s: 29.97
I play the file in Adobe Media, QuickTime, and Real Players.
    The motion is very jerky.
The time progression bar moves in stops and spurts.
    I created a new MP4 file with kbps: 13,000.
    It was also jerky.
I created an AVI file, it plays smoothly.
Any idea how to correct this?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the feedback about why H264 is jerky on my computer.
    As you suggested,
I used the FLV preset to create two FLV files.
    Codec: FLV4/VP62
    Name: Flash/On2 VP6
    kbps: 1699
    kbps: 5409
Both files work much better than the H264 MP4 file.
The kbps:1699 file is a bit jerky.
The kbps:5409 file is more jerky.
Since the files are on my hard drive, I am not sure why the kbps:5409 is jerkier since that is the rate DVDs play 720x480 movies at. I would expect the kbps:1699 to be of poorer quality because of the lower bandwith.
Just so you know where I am heading. I want to place my 1280x720P HDV/HDTV 720 29.97 square pixel AE composition on Vimeo.
Vimeo recommends "using the H.264 codec at size 1280×720, bit rate 3000-5000 kbits/sec (optimized for “download”), key frame every 30 frames (frame reordering on), using whatever frame rate you shot in. For sound, use AAC at 128kbps in stereo."
By the way, there is a HD video on Vimeo called "FIA GT3 Video Battle" which GSpot says uses
    Codec: avc1
    Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    Size: 1280 x 720
    Frames/s: 23.976
    kbps: 1803
I downloaded it to my hard drive. On my computer, it is a slightly jerky but not too bad. Why my video using the same settings is so much jerkier than this video is unclear. Of course, as you explained, I cannot expect a H.264 codec to keep up with my slower computer. It is also unclear if I should Set Key Frame Distance to 30.
Is there a white paper or book that explains in detail the tradeoffs and recommendations for both HD web based and Blue Ray situations like this? Thanks again for your help.

  • Closed Captons in a h264 video file

I am using Premiere CS6. I know how to import a closed caption file onto the time line and output the video to tape with the closed caption imbedded, however, what I want is a h264 mp4 file with the closed captions imbedded.  How can I do this?

Who said anything about copyrighted material. I am a video producer and author dvd's with surround sound at times. In an effort to quickly make H264 and Mpeg4 files I use elemental streams from my authoring dvd's rather than reconstructing video projects in Avid or Final Cut Pro.
So I'll ask the question again...

  • H264 mp4 gamma fine in sizes under 720x576, blown out any size above

Hi, I've been banging my head against a wall til the early hours of the morning trying to work out why the encoding of my H264 mp4 is behaving how it is. Can anyone shed any light on whether this is normal behaviour, or a bug?
Basically, I've been trying to render to a 1280x720 mp4 H264 file from an After Effects Quicktime (100 animation) mov, I've tried various presets and was getting a colour blowout, colours becoming far brighter and more neon. I tried all 3 profiles, and all levels. After many many trial and error I have worked out that a file that is of the dimensions 720x576 or below will have a very close result to the source file, anything above that will have inaccurate blown out colours.
Why would physical dimensions alter colour values? Is this a bug?
Near deadline on a job, doing my head in, any help would be appreciated
    Chris

The only thing that comes to mind is that 720 x 576 is SD, which uses the REC. 601 color space, and 1280 x 720 is HD, which uses the REC. 709 colors.  Maybe the original is incorrectly using the 601 space and it's not getting properly 'converted' to the newer and broader 709 colors.

  • Black Thumbnails for MP4 files in iPhoto

The MP4 files from my digital camera show up as black icons in iPhoto 09. I don't recall this happening before Snow Leopard was installed. Some MP4 files work show thumbnails. Regardless, all the MP4 files DO open via iPhoto, and the thumbnails can be seen in the Finder.
These files are MPEG4 h.264/AAC codec. If I run these files through MPEG Streamclip to remake them as the same file type, then the thumbnails DO appear in iphoto when reimported. Comparing the "get info" data on both types of the files (ones with black thumbs and ones with real thumbs) shows no difference in file types.
Short of having to convert all my small videos and reimporting them, or getting another camera who's MPEG4 is consistent with iPhoto, I'm at a loss. I have done a rather complete internet search and several others report a similar problem. The camera I am using is Samsung TL34HD.
Appreciate any help short of what I am currently doing (converting to the same file format and reimporting the videos in batches).

thanks larry. when i open in quicktime and go to the first frame, it is not black. also, for some reason, when i import the movies into itunes, the thumbnails show up fine (i.e. no black frame). i'm guessing that it has something to do with how iPhoto generates the thumbnail (vs. iTunes), but i don't know enough to change these settings.
if the first frame is in fact black, do you know if there is a way to force iphoto to use something other than the first frame when generating thumbnails?
    thanks very much.

  • Improting H264 MP4 format video

    Hello.
I have been trying to import videos that I recorded of my gameplay with AverMedia Live Gamer HD capture card.4
I have used H264 format and m.mp4 file extension. In older version of CC Premiere Pro videos did work just fine now in 2014 version I just get green screen in videos and I have no idea why.
Interesting is that I tried to transcode one video with media encoder to mp4 format and that did work out.m
So I am wondering that what is going on here.
If you do need any more details please ask and I provide. I just can't figure what would be useful at this point.

  • Encoding to Blu-ray is destroying my black levels - what am I doing wrong?

I need to burn a short to Blu-ray for a screening coming up, but every time Premiere/Encoder/Encore finishes the disc, the black levels look nothing like what I saw in my project timeline OR in Encore's preview window. The blacks are soft, grey, with way too much detail in them. Research has led me to believe that my issue has something to do with the color values of my project going from 0-255, but that Adobe Media Encoder will automatically shift that to 16-235. Or something. I don't know, all of this is new to me in the last 12 hours.
I did miss around with the Levels effect in Premiere just to test this hypothesis, and when I bumped the black output levels from 0 to 16 in the timeline, it did replicate the difference that I was seeing in finished blu's.
I've scoured all the settings in Premiere and Encore for a way to control the black levels going into/coming out of Encoder, but cannot find anything. Someone please tell me what stupid thing I overlooked so I can make this movie look right.
For reference, my source video is:
    DSLR .mov footage, 1920x1080, 23.976
And I'm exporting to Blu-ray using the following settings:
MPEG 2 (also tried H.264, same result)
    NTSC
CBR (movie's only 22 minutes), but I've also tried VBR 2pass at 40mbps max, 35mbs target, and 25mbps minimum.
    Profile: 5.0
Max render quality, maximum bit depth, max everything.

You are correct. Depending on a host of technical factors (none of which are visible or controllable in the GUI) the raw footage that is sent from Premiere to AME for encode can be in the range 0-255 (PC) or 16-235 (TV). Rendering at Max Render Quality should have it come in as 16-235 always.
If you encode for TV the encoder will scale the range down - making it less contrasty - ie what you're seeing) or simply clamp the values so that anything below 16 is clamped to 16 and above 235 is clamped to 235.
You said that you have your TV connected to the PC via HDMI. Can you put the reference monitor on that display and confirm that the blacks are the same as the video seen inside PPro? If so your TV is configured correctly.
Next use the 3 way color corrector (NOT "Levels" or "Brightness and Contrast" - they are clamped to the 16-235 range!!!!) to blow the image out from 16-235 to full range (check in the vectorscope or YCrCb waveform to confirm it's full range - ie WAY past the 100% squares in the vectorscope).
Check on the TV and it should not show the greater gammut. If it does it means that your TV is doing full-range.
this is all a bit late for your showing but I hope it can help.
    Anyhow off that tangent...
I would recommend you export a h.264 clip to a usb stick if your standard home-use blu-ray player has usb stick playback.
Put that stick in your blu-ray player or Samsung TV if it can do it too, and see if it'll play back with the right blacks.

  • H264 MP4 rendered in Premiere CC isn't playable on iPad1

For some reason iPad1s cannot play videos that I render in Premiere CC as H264 MP4 (960x540 at 29.97fps).  I've tried both Main and Baseline profiles.  I had read somewhere that iPad1s can only play baseline H264.... but it seems not even them.
What other settings can I change that would enable playablility on iPad1s?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are Apple's specs for the iPad1:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Make sure both your video and audio meet those specs.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

    Hi,
I am working as a reporter for the sports portal. So far I have been making my videos using Adobe Pro CS3. Previously I used Sony MiniDV Handycam and I had no problem editing them afterwards. Yesterday I got new camera - Sony XDCAM EX. When I import videos in my computer I have them in MP4 format. The first problem I had was that I could have sound for those MP4 files when I imported them in Adobe CS3 (if someone could help with this as well, it would be wonderful). I figured out how to get this sound but when I finally made my video and exported that, my new .avi movie had like black frames, it was dimming regularly like the movies they made in the beggining of previous century.

  • Issue with Data at Infoset Level

    HI All,
I have an Infoset designed above an DSO and a Cube.
Plant between the DSO and Cube are linked in the Infoset.(Inner Join...Also Tried Left Outer Join)
Dso has got a Capacity Keyfigure and the data in DSO is as below..
    Company code    Plant     Capacity
    CC1              P1     7000
    CC2              P2     28000
    CC3                       P3     5000
    CC4              P4     2000
When I execute the report on Infoset the data displayed as follows:
Plant     Capacity      Stock Pal           In-Transit                      Utilisation
    P1     1,89,000     108              2          0.1%
    P2     1,484,000     647              1          0.0%
    P3     10000     18              0          0.2%
    P4     358,000     654,771            57          182.9%
    The Capacity Data is incorrect..
At the Cube level I have got material level data, which I think is the culprit.
At Infoset level If I view the Data, I can see capacity of the ware house at every material..so when aggregated in the report at plant level the values are wrong..
Can you let me know where can I do a change to overcome this problem.
    Appreciate your Help in Advance.
    Regards,
    Harika

    HI
    Thanks for your replies.
I tried changing the Excception Aggreation wth First, Last , minimum, Maximum Values.. But there is no change in the report.
I also tried creating a multiprovider. I can see data at Multiprovider level . But when coming to report level i dont see data for capacities. The query is run based on Calday. But the ODS doesnt have Calday. It has got Calmonth only. I can't  view the data in the report on Multi provider for capacities. I can't include the calday in the ODS as it is in live being used in many other infoproviders.
    Regards,
    Harika.
