Data Center Hall Temperature for Cisco Nexus 7010

Hi,
I Have a Nexus 7010 that sometimes raise an alarm about temperature thresholds that are being exceeded.... I was wondering if Cisco has a recommendation (or best practice) about the correct temperature that the Nexus need in the cold and hot hall of the data room. I know that the operative temperature of nexus is 0 - 40°C but i´m not sure if my halls are in the best temperature.

Hi Salvador,
As long as you keep your Data Center environment in this operative range your N7K will be fine.
The usual is around 18°C and 24°C.

Following objects from conventional CISCO-PROCESS-MIB provides you details on CPU on devices:
    cpmCPUTotal5secRev     1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.6
    cpmCPUTotal1minRev     1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.7
    cpmCPUTotal5minRev      1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.8
Following document will be helpful as well:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094a94.shtml
As many MIBs are not completely implemented on NX-OS so there is one more MIB which can help, i.e CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-MIB :
    cseSysCPUUtilization(1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.305.1.1.1)
Unlike the averaged values from CISCO-PROCESS-MIB, cseSysCPUUtilization returns an un-smoothed value and typically shows more erratic results. It only shares the the average utilization of CPU on the active supervisor. So usually it is recommended to use the CISCO-PROCESS-MIB, ie. cpmCPUTotal5secRev instead.

    Please help.
How to set up logging of commands on syslog server ? (cisco nexus 7010)

    Hi Igor
Nexus has internal accounting log: sh accouting log
But it can be sent only to the accounting server, not to a syslog server.
If you want - you man manually export it to some log.

  • Simulator/Emulator for Cisco Nexus 7k, 5k

Do you guys know any good simulator or emulator for Cisco Nexus 7k or 5k ?

There aren't any at the moment. I have heard that Cisco has an internal one that is proprietary and not available to the public. Our only hope is to wait for the release of Cisco's VIRL aka Cisco Modeling Labs and hope that an NX-OS emulator will be included. However, when I was checking it out at this year's Cisco Live the current version did not have one :(

  • Contact Center Enhanced License for Cisco 2951 Router

    Hi,
I need an urgent help to get the exact part number/details of Contact center enhanced license.
I couldn't find in CCW or any other tool about this license with Cisco 2951 Router (CISCO2951-V/K9).
To run this license on mentioned router, do we need to order it separately or we can take it with router?
    Please respond asap.

    Hi Andre,
I was just refering the Ordering guide which says
Updating UCSS contract when upgrading Unified CCX licenses
UCSS cannot be upgraded from one category to another (e.g. Standard to Enhanced). If
the customer upgrades within the solution, they need to purchase UCSS for greater or
equal value to cover the new version, then they can request a credit on the unused term
of the original purchase from Customer Service
you can also speak to [email protected] for more details on ESW.

Right now there is only a few features that are not supported on N1Kv on Hyper-V
They are VXLAN and QOS Fair Weighted Queuing. We are currently demoing VXLAN functionality at Microsoft TechEd Conference this week in New Orleans. So VXLAN support should be coming soon. I can't give you a specific timeline.
For Fair Weighted Queuing I'm not sure. In the VMware world we take advantage of NETIOC infrastructure. In the MS world they do not have a NETIOC infrastructure that we can use to create a similar feature.
Code base parity (as in VMware and Hyper-V VSMs running NXOS 5.x) will happen with the next major N1KV release for ESX.
Let me know if that doesn't answer your question.

  • Data Center Design: Nexus 7K with VDC-core/VDC-agg model

    Dear all,
I'm doing with a collapsed VDC-core/VDC-agg model on the same chassis with 2  Redundant Cisco Nexus 7010 and a pair of Cisco 6509 used as a Service  Chassis without VSS. Each VDC Core have redundant link to 2 PE based on  Cisco 7606.
After reading many design document of Cisco, I'm asking  what is the need of a Core Layer in a Data Center especially if it is  small or medium size with only 1 aggregation layer and dedicated for a Virtualized Multi-Tenanted environement? What is driving to have a core layer?
    Thanx

If your data center is small enough to not require a core, then its fine to run with a collapsed core (distribution + core as the same device).  For a redundant design you need to uplink all your distribution switches to each of your cores.  If you have no cores, then you need full mess at your distribution layer (for full redundancy).
Lets say you have only 4 distribution pairs...so 8 switches  For full redundancy each one needs uplink to each other.  This means you need 28 total ports used to connect all the switches together (n(n-1)/2).  Thats also assuming 1 link to each device.  However if you had redundant cores, the number of links used for uplinks reduces to 21 total links (this includes links between each distribution switch in a site, and link between the two cores).  So here you see your only saving 7 links.  Here your not gaining much by adding a core.
However if you have 12 distribution pairs...so 24 switches.  Full redundancy means you have 276 links dedicated for this.  If you add a core, this drops to 61 links.  Here you see the payoff.

  • Ask the Expert: Different Flavors and Design with vPC on Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches

Welcome to the Cisco® Support Community Ask the Expert conversation.  This is an opportunity to learn and ask questions about Cisco® NX-OS.
The biggest limitation to a classic port channel communication is that the port channel operates only between two devices. To overcome this limitation, Cisco NX-OS has a technology called virtual port channel (vPC). A pair of switches acting as a vPC peer endpoint looks like a single logical entity to port channel attached devices. The two devices that act as the logical port channel endpoint are actually two separate devices. This setup has the benefits of hardware redundancy combined with the benefits offered by a port channel, for example, loop management.
vPC technology is the main factor for success of Cisco Nexus® data center switches such as the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series, Nexus 7000 Series, and Nexus 2000 Series Switches.
This event is focused on discussing all possible types of vPC along-with best practices, failure scenarios, Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) recommendations and troubleshooting

    Hello Gustavo
Please see my responses to your questions:
Yes almost all routing protocols use Multicast to establish adjacencies. We are dealing with two different type of traffic –Control Plane and Data Plane.
Control Plane: To establish Routing adjacency, the first packet (hello) is punted to CPU. So in the case of triangle routed VPC topology as specified on the Operations Guide Link, multicast for routing adjacencies will work. The hellos packets will be exchanged across all 3 routers and adjacency will be formed over VPC links
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/operations/n5k_L3_w_vpc_5500platform.html#wp999181
Now for Data Plane we have two types of traffic – Unicast and Multicast.
The Unicast traffic will not have any forwarding issues, but because the Layer 3 ECMP and port channel run independent hash calculations there is a possibility that when the Layer 3 ECMP chooses N5k-1 as the Layer 3 next hop for a destination address while the port channel hashing chooses the physical link toward N5k-2. In this scenario,N5k-2 receives packets from R with the N5k-1 MAC as the destination MAC.
Sending traffic over the peer-link to the correct gateway is acceptable for data forwarding, but it is suboptimal because it makes traffic cross the peer link when the traffic could be routed directly.
For that topology, Multicast Traffic might have complete traffic loss due to the fact that when a PIM router is connected to Cisco Nexus 5500 Platform switches in a vPC topology, the PIM join messages are received only by one switch. The multicast data might be received by the other switch.
The Loop avoidance works little different across Nexus 5000 and Nexus 7000.
Similarity: For both products, loop avoidance is possible due to VSL bit
The VSL bit is set in the DBUS header internal to the Nexus.
It is not something that is set in the ethernet packet that can be identified. The VSL bit is set on the port asic for the port used for the vPC peer link, so if you have Nexus A and Nexus B configured for vPC and a packet leaves Nexus A towards Nexus B, Nexus B will set the VSL bit on the ingress port ASIC. This is not something that would traverse the peer link.
This mechanism is used for loop prevention within the chassis.
The idea being that if the port came in the peer link from the vPC peer, the system makes the assumption that the vPC peer would have forwarded this packet out the vPC-enabled port-channels towards the end device, so the egress vpc interface's port-asic will filter the packet on egress.
Differences:  In Nexus 5000 when it has to do L3-to-L2 lookup for forwarding traffic, the VSL bit is cleared and so the traffic is not dropped as compared to Nexus 7000 and Nexus 3000.
It still does loop prevention but the L3-to-L2 lookup is different in Nexus 5000 and Nexus 7000.
For more details please see below presentation:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/sites/default/files/session_14-_nexus.pdf
DCI Scenario:  If 2 pairs are of Nexus 5000 then separation of L3/L2 links is not needed.
But in most scenarios I have seen pair of Nexus 5000 with pair of Nexus 7000 over DCI or 2 pairs of Nexus 7000 over DCI. If Nexus 7000 are used then L3 and L2 links are required for sure as mentioned on above presentation link.
Let us know if you have further questions.
    Thanks,
    Vishal

  • Data Center Fundamentals Book?

So we're building a new data center from scratch mainly with Nexus 5548s, UCS 6248UPs, UCS 5108s, ACE 4710s and NetApp 3240 filer.
I have very basic experience with Data Center's network fundamentals and infrastructure so I'm going to do some homework here.
I've found the book I've mentioned in title which is very close to what I want but it's a 2003 book. Dose this still cover what I need?
I also found a new book called "Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) (Data Center): A Complete Reference Guide to the Cisco Data Center Virtualization Server Architecture". Does this covers Data Center's network fundamentals and infrastructure as well.
Even I found this design document: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Data_Center/DC_Infra2_5/DCI_SRND_2_5_book.html
So where should I start from? Which one do you recommend? Is there any non-Cisco press books that you recommend?
    Thanks

  • Cisco Nexus 5548 device

    Hi,
Can you please let me know how to get (command) Manufacture date for Cisco Nexus 5548 device.
    Appreciate your support.
    Thanks,
    Brahma

    Hi Brahma,
I dont believe there is a command which would give you the Manufacture date directly, however there is an old theory which speaks about decoding the date of manufacture from the serial number.
    Excerpt is as captured below:-
The date code is built into the serial number. The format is LLLYYWWSSSS, where:
LLL is the location at which the unit was built.
YY is the year that the unit was built (1997=01, 1998=02, 1999=03, 2000=04).
WW is the work week of the year that the unit was built.
    SSSS is the serial number.
Else the account rep would be able to give more details by backtracking the serial number to the inventory.

If the ERSPAN source and destination are in different subnets, and if the ERSPAN source is an L3 control VM kernel NIC attached to a Cisco Nexus 1000V VEM, you must enable proxy-ARP on the upstream switch.
If you do not enable proxy-ARP on the upstream switch (or router, if there is no default gateway), ERSPAN packets are not sent to the destination.
