Data corruption with SSD after hard reset

Hi, I'm using a Mac Mini for a car product and I MUST shut it down each time the hard way, i.e. by cutting the power.
I am perfectly aware that this is definitely NOT the recommended way to shut down OSX because it might lead to data corruption but at the moment there are NO other options. So please don't simply suggest to shut it down the "good way", i.e. via software, because it simply isn't an option.
Now, in the past I did lots of ON/OFF tests with conventional drives and had no problems. Recently I moved to SSD drives and it looks like I get more frequent boot problems (apple logo with the wheel spinning forever). Using DiskWarrior in these cases fixes the problem and repairs the folder structure of the drive. After that the drive boots again.
Given the constraints for the application, i.e. shutdown==powercut, is there any way I can ensure better data integrity? If I disable write caching would that help? Any other trick I could do to make the system more resilient? And finally, are actually SSD more prone to crashes of this kind or was that just a coincidence?
Thanks a lot for the help, I hope some of you has experienced this problem in a similar situation (and found a good solution)
cheers
Emanuele

There are OSX compatible UPSs that send status information to the computer via USB. This enables the computer to do a normal shutdown before the UPS battery runs out. Here's an example of the system preference that will show when a compatible UPS is connected:
<http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/support/faqs/faqOSXUPS.html>
Do you think disabling write caching would help at all?
It might, but the problem may be entirely in the SSD. Do you have journaling enabled on the SSD? That could make a big difference.
Finally, I'm using OCZ Solid 2. Do you have any comment on that or do you recommend something different? I doubt that SLC drives would help in this matter.
You would have to contact the SSD makers and ask them how well they handle power failures. It should be possible to make them no worse than a normal hard drive, but there may be some compromises they have to make for performance reasons.

  • Problems with partitions after hard reset

Hi hope some can help here, I installed Maverick on my imac and everything seemed fine, I went to work and came home to find a black screen with nothing but the mouse cursor, however the computer wouldnt respond in any way so had to do a hard reset when the computer restarted I would get the Aplle logo and the spinning wheel then the computer would restart it kept doing this over and over.
I restared the computer went into DU tried to repair disk and kept getting errors, my drive is 3TB i have a 1TB primary Partition and a second of 2TB I tried to erase and reformat the primary partition but got an error half way through now both partitons are greyed out with no way or deleting or doing anything with them I have also noticed I no longer have the hard drive make and model in the list just Mackintoh HD and my second partition, to make matters worse my second partition is now unmounted and and when I try to mount it says it needs to be repaired but wont repair, I really need totry and get the data from the second partiton but im struggling, when I tried to reinstall os x it cant see a drive to install to nothing shows up, I even booted using diskwarrior and even it couldnt see the drive, I know this drive is ok this is a software issue the partition table seems to be corrupt or something help!!
Its worth mentioning I had Parallels and Windows 7 on the primary partiton could the windows partiton have caused an issue when I tried to erase and reformat the partition?

  • A DIFFERENT problem with Maps after Hard Reset

Was advised to hard reset my phone after it started going crazy with data which I did using the advised *#7something# method.
Nokia Maps is fortunately still there upon reset. Phew. Although when I open it it starts downloading mad amounts of data.
All my maps are gone. it appears my mass memory got kind of messed up in the reset - it deleted a lot of the data off the mass memory, but left some of it. Example - my music files all went, but the directory structure remained. My photos remained, but Nokia doesn't know when they were taken.
I have tried connecting my phone to my PC and opening maps in Ovi Suite ... and it says 'cannot find maps or voice guidance files in your device', and I appear to have no option to re add them.
There is an 'open help' link below the message ... which opens a blank help page in my browser. Useful.
    Can anyone help?

This has occurred the entire time I have owned the iPod. I only discovered iLyrics about 2 months ago. I don't believe iLyrics is to blame.
In general, the lyrics are in English and do not have special characters. This is a good suggestion though. I'm going to pay close attention to see if I can find any weird HTML bits showing up. It seems to occur about 70% of the time. I've assumed that it is completely random, so I'm going to pay closer attention to see if some songs work 100% of the time. Interestingly, it never goes wrong 100% of the time either. It sometimes takes 4 or 5 tries, but eventually I'll be able to scroll through the entire song.
I'm getting the impression that this is NOT a common problem....

My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes, it don't reads too like USB by Windows.
Before that i've seen error (-50) in iTunes, so i reset ipod.
I've read all tips on this site, but nothing helps me.

No, USB works good. I've tried reset on my friend's PC, and it saw my ipod and reset was done. But when i tried to load music, it wrote me, that i've installed incorrect software.

  • 8350i uncaught exception java.lang.NullPointerException after hard reset

    basic info:
    8350i
    v4.6.1.204 (Platform 3.0.0.73)
    Desktop Manager 4.7
everything is good except that i've been using two batteries, one in the phone and one in a charger. when the phone's battery is almost drained i swap it with the charged one which of course causes a hard reset.
this procedure was working well for at least a week or two until last month when i swapped batteries - after the hard reset i got
    uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException
i could make calls but all other software seemed corrupted... virtually nothing else worked... icons missing etc.
tried all sorts of solutions but the only thing that fixed it was a full on device software erase/reload, then a data restore from previous backup. at the time i figured it was just a random thing and was glad to learn how to do a complete software reload.
then yesterday it happened again (again, immediately at the end of the security check after hard reset). now i'm afraid to swap batteries because it would appear that every time i hard reset there is a 10% (my guess) chance of software corruption and a complete reload takes a significant amount of time.
has anybody else noticed this? does anybody have a solution?
can i swap batteries without a hard reset; i.e. swap while plugged into power? i haven't tried this yet for fear of causing my BB harm.
    any help is appreciated,
    john d.

    Hello, John.
Make selective backup as it is described here:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/board/message?board.id=8100&view=by_date_ascending&message.i...
Backup only information that you need.
There is described the purpose of every database you can observe when you're doing the selective backup:
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB03974
When you have done selective backup do the following.
On your device go to: Options - Security Options - General Settings
Open menu and select "Wipe handheld"

  • Damage to SSD when hard reset to Macbook

    Hi all,
Thanks for reading my post. Please let me ask a question.
Sometime my macbook air will freeze and couldn't do anything with keyboard or mousepad, even close the cover it still there and won't go sleep mode.
At that time i have no choice and just do a hard reset by long pressing the power button and turn it back on.
The freeze is rarely happend and i found out what is the reason so that part is not a problem.
I just wondering when we perform a hard reset to the macbook , will it damage the SSD ?
I read some information and article says that SSD is weak on "suddent power loss" especially when the SSD is trying to write something on its flash.
So just wondering will this happend also with hard reset or Macbook air have some logic to prevent that happend? ( like automatically stop the process on SSD when hard reset ,etc)
I have tried to google the answer at internet but couldn't find any answer or article mention about this.
If any one know about this please teach me the answer.
Really thanks for your time and please have a nice day.
Using model : Macbook air mid 2012 128GB (Toshiba SSD)

I doubt a hard reset will damage any hardware.  If the drive is writing, there is a possibility that files may become corrupt but at worse you may lose what you are working on or have to repair files.
Typically you don't do a hard reset just to switch off or for the fun of it, a hard reset is something one resorts to when you get a system freeze.  If your computer is frozen, it won't be doing much when you do the reset so  thre chances of damage, even to files is minimal.

  • N8 Cant remove Topapps even after hard reset

    Hi,
Few hours ago I just bought a new N8. It has in it TopApps and Ovi store, I wanted to remove Topapps but it continue to deny the operation. I tried soft reset, hard reset and in the ned 4 buttons reset. I tried also few solutions offered here in nokia forum but still without any sucess. I cant remove TopApps or Ovi Store even after hard reset, the maps are also here - I thought that these apps will disappear after hard reset.
In applications I got 3 ovi store related apps installed - ovi, Ovi notifications support package and Ovi Store. Social network app is not working too, its showing me service unavailable. Any ideas ?
    Thank you for attention

    Hi rslid,
Nokia Store or rather Ovi Store is not deletable or uninstalabe as this is one of the applications that is necessary to enable you to download and update downloaded applications to your Nokia N8-00 Belle. If you try to delete or unistall you get the message operation denied so its better if you leave it.
Concerning hard resetting, any time you feel like hard resetting your device use *#7370# followed by 12345 as the default security code unless you have manually changed it but always remember that it will delete all user data from both drive C and E hence a backup of your data with the phone settings unticked or not selected is strongly recomended before hard resetting and also note and remember that after hard resetting always reinstall your firmware to avoid having an unstable device.

  • Need Help -- after hard reset sync issues

    Hi
My Centro was frozen and I performed a hard reset.  Everything was backed up on my computer.  I synced it, worked fine.  Problem is when I sync it again, EVERY time it sees the device as new and asks me if I want to name it or sync with the old device name.  So every time I sync it is "restoring" my device.
In bluetooth manager the phone has the same profile name as in hotsync.
Not sure what else to do, I don't want it to "restore" every time I sync?
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

In Palm Desktop, is the username the same as the hotsync name on the Centro? Do you have more than 1 username in Palm desktop?
When it asked for the username, I assumed the name you used is the username in Palm desktop that has the data.
One thing you can try is to export the data from the current username, create a new username in Palm desktop, import the data into the new username, hard reset the Centro, connect to the PC, use the new username you created when it asks for the username and complete the sync. See if that may resolve the issue.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

  • Battery after hard reset on Lumia 800

    Hi
A few days ago i did a hard reset on my Lumia 800. Since that everything was great, the only reason why i did it, to restore the default settings. After that i updated the firmware to 12070 via Zune. Since that day, my phone doesn't really know how much  percentages are left from the battery. Sometimes It's showing a consant value for a long time, then suddenly begins to drain, and after a few it stops. It often happens, that it shows a value, and after an hour it shows a higher value (in percentage) than beforehand.
Today I let It to discharge to 0%, and then i pluged it to the charger. When the phone turned on, it showed me 5%.
It's lifetime havent changed so spectacularly, but i guess its a bit shorter with the same usage.
Is this behaviour normal after hard reset?
    Thanks

After update my lumia 800 is failing to recongnise earphone. It keeps playing music on speaker. If I restart my phone then for few mins it is playing music in earphone. But after few mins once again music playback is starting through speaker.
what should be the problem? will hard reset solve this problem? If yes, how to hard reset nokia lumia 800.
    Thanks in adv,

  • N85 going slow after hard reset - help

    Hello
I did a hard reset on the phone and now everything is going really slowly, especially messaging. Any solution please? Do I download new software and how?
    thank you.
Message Edited by mark24601 on 05-Nov-2009 02:48 PM

Make sure there is nothing installing in the background at times after hard reset the phone tries to install some applications that was stored in the card, so wait for sometime or try installing applications on the phone removing the memory card.
If a reply has solved your problem click Accept as solution button, doing it will help others know the solution. Thanks.
