Data DVD from Mac shows up blank in Windows!

Hi,
burned a couple of DVDs now from the Mac desktop with various files on them. On my PC the DVD spins up but Windows shows the disk as being empty. Any thoughts on what is happening here?

So put the affected discs back in your Mac.. let them mount.. then get info on the disc from Finder. What filesystem was it burned with. You should also be able to do this in Disk Utility.
If it says HFS or HFS+ then it will not mount in Windows.
Fat32 or UDF (preferred) is required for Windows.
Try burning the data disc from Disk Utility with the correct format ISO-9660 or DVD-UDF.

  • Data dvd from mac to pc. PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
I recently burned a data dvd with about 15 hours of music through iTunes on my Powerbook and tried to open it with iTunes for windows on a dell laptop.
The dvd shows in the side bar, along with all the song titles, but they cannot be imported or played. Viewing the dvd itself and clicking on it's files opens iTunes but does not play them. The mp3 files on the disc open, play, and can be added to the library but the m4as cannot! I thought m4a's were the iTunes standard! Does anyone know why these files won't play or import into the library?
I was thinking that maybe there was an issue recognizing the files in windows, or a licensing issue maybe? Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Yes, actually I have had some success. Dell Music jukebox seems to copy all the mp3 files (which I didn't want it to do). I managed to get the files onto the computer by dragging (copying) them into a file on the desktop, and then using "Add to Library" as you noted. This works for mp3 and m4a files, and iTunes is able to read both.
There are a few problems I have encountered with this method.
    1) Friends who've tried this and added the files sometimes give iTunes the file path back ot the dvd... i.e. when the dvd is removed the files can't be found by iTunes. Removing the dvd before hand, checking the files on the desktop (to ensure thay can play), and then adding them seems to prevent this issue.
    2) Also, something that I read in another post in this forum, windows has issues with filenames containing certain punctuation. The post I read said "?" could not be included, but I only had problems with "/".
I have also noted that the laptop only detects the dvd sporadically. At one point it was not showing even in the My Computer menu.
On two dell laptops of the same model, one detected the dvd in the iTunes sidebar and the other did not.
I'm not sure what the issue here is, but I think we'll probably just have to use our ways around it and hope a future software update helps.

  • Data DVD from iTunes not working - please help

I burned a 4 GB playlist as a data DVD from iTunes 7.
I am trying to put the files on a PC running iTunes 7, and NOTHING is happening. The drive in the PC is DVD-rom and all other DVD's work fine.
    What's the deal?

    What is "Adding to library"?
    Huh?
This is how you get songs into iTunes.
    Open iTunes.
    Inset the DVD.
Go to File -> Add File (or folder) to iTunes and select the files/folders on the DVD.
The DVD is not going to show up in iTunes because it is not an audio CD. It is a data DVD.
Do not try to Import the DVD because Import is used for audio CDs only.

  • Making Data DVD from iMovie HD (5)

    HELP!!!
I need to make a data DVD of my iMovie project to send to a stock-footage company. Anybody know EXACTLY how to do this? I'm using Toast 7. Thanks for your help.--Porter

in your o.p. you said to make a data DVD of my iMovie project to send to a stock-footage company... my guess was, you need a "universal" standard/very little companies support "Mac only"... in the data-disk options of Toast, you can choose many formats, "Mac" too...
    reading your second post...
my guess is, you try to do a "data spanning" to continue on subsequent discs, correct...? use/read "Help" of Toast7...
... where is the Quicktime of my iMovie HD (5) project?
    wherever you've stored it
there's the socalled "ref.mov" within the project's file (that with a star); in iMHD, this file isn't a folder anymore, but a "package"; simply ctrl-click on it, choose from menu "show package content"... beware: any "fumble" of movie.pkg can distroy whole project.
    BUT!
as said, that is just a ref.mov; Toast can create a videoDisk (the ref.mov "collects" all need video+audio; a ref-mov is just an "alias"; it is just <500kB = not the video/movie itself!); but - to my knowledge - is not able to create a data-disk (=movie.dv) from a ref.mov
if you need a movie, you need to create one by export/share from within iM, choose Quicktime/Full Quality... huge files: 1h = ~13GB...

  • Playing MP3 DVD from Mac on Windows

Does anyone know if an MP3 playlist burned to DVD from iTunes on a Mac, will play on a current Dell running recent Windows XP with iTunes?
    harmz

Were the MP3s just burned to the DVD as data files?
If so, I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't
    play in Windows.
I am yet to burn the DVD and did not know if the MP3 setting would burn a DVD since it is only labeled as CD. As an MP3 setting, I expect the resulting disc (let's say a CD to simplifiy this point) would be formatted for both Mac & Windows especially since some portable MP3 players will not play Mac OS extended (as I understand it).
However, a data file could be another matter. It would be most appropriate for Apple to format a data file burn also for both Mac & Windows but I was not sure if they had. Thus my question. I know of no way to check on my Mac, if the resultant disc has Joliet since once it recognizes Mac OS extended, it only reports that format even on discs I know are hybrids.
Anyone know how to check if a disc formated with Mac OS extended is also formated with Windows format?

  • Data transfer from mac to pc using ipod

I need to transfer some data files from my MacBook to my PC using my 30GB ipod. I get all the files copied onto my ipod from my mac with no problems. I have my ipod set to be used in disk mode.
Once I plug it into my pc, it tells me that I need to format the drive. How can I successfully transfer data from my mac to my pc using my 30GB ipod?
Someone told me to go ahead and format the drive/ipod on my pc and then plug it into my mac, place the files in the ipod and then I should be able to access the files having the ipod plugged into my pc. I started to try this, but it messes up my ipod to where I need to reset my ipod to factory settings using, my macbook.
Would it be possible to reset my ipod to factory settings using itunes on my pc and then try plug the ipod into my macbook and copy the files over that way?
Please let me know what you have found out. I need to backup all my files and get them on to a second computer. I have 25GB worth of home videos that makes it so that I need to use my ipod, other wise another device would do the trick.

Yes. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's what you were supposed to do in the first place. The wonderful thing about OS X: It'll speak HFS+, FAT32, and it'll even understand NTFS (but it can't write to it... yet). Oddest thing: XBox 360 will read HFS+, but WinXP/Vista won't... curious, isn't it?

  • Playing DVD from Mac to Apple TV

    Hi there,
I recently purchased Apple TV and would like to know if it is possible to view  my wedding film on dvd from my mac to my apple tv.
When i turn on Apple TV Airplay mirroring the screen on my mac and my TV is grey and white checkered and it won't play, only sound.
Everything else like home sharing works fine.
    Appreciate any advice

Apple have crippled Airplay assuming you are trying to send copy protected content.
    Two options:
1 - Use another DVD capable player eg VLC
2 - Assuming the DVD video is not protected, Google the free Handbrake and convert the DVD video footage to AppleTV compatible h264 (there are presets). Add the video to iTunes - it will go to Movies under Unknown Genre - right click and use Get info and adjust metadata.  Handbrake will only handle video conversion not menus.

How can I copy .doc files from Mac folders to Windows folders?
I am running Parallel but I cannot access the Mac folders and files when I am running Windows.
I cannot access flash drives from Windows either.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you

Theres a feature called shared folders that works
quite nicely. I cant quite remember the specifics but
I have done it before. Or if you've got a few small
ones copy and pasting between work spaces now works.
    Cheers, Arthur

  • H.264 movies from Mac show garbage on PC

Movies I've been making on the Mac show video garbage when played on an XP machine. But the sound is fine.

It's a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop that I have just replaced the hard drive on. I had upgraded to XP SP2 as required by the current QuickTIme installer, but I was not aware of the 110 other updates waiting for this system. Now that they have all been installed too, the QuickTime movies play correctly.
I'm sorry to have posted a needless question.

  • Blank data CD doesn't show up in finder window, but I can burn music onto..

When I load a blank CD (or CD-RW), iTunes opens. But no icon shows up, either in iTunes, in the Finder window or on the Desktop. If I select a playlist in iTunes, the Burn Disc icon appears and I can burn the disc (even thought I can't see it). Once burned, the disc DOES show up on the Desktop and all is well.
HOWEVER, I cannot move data onto a blank disc. System Profiler says the disc is loaded, but the Finder doesn't see it. I saw something somewhere about running "repair permissions," but I don't know how to do that and don't know whether it's the thing to do, anyhow.
    Thoughts, anyone?
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

One possibility is that you have "Ignore" selected for when you insert a blank CD.
To change this go to System Preferences below the blue , then click on CDs&DVDs. From this box you are able to change the preferences for when a disc is inserted.
Changing it to "Ask what to do" will prompt a dialog box where you can choose an "action" such as open the Finder. This should allow the disc icon to be visible on the desktop when a blank disc is inserted.
    Hope this helps.

  • External HD (WD Passport) disappeared from Mac - shows up on PC

I have a 2tb Passport Ultra we've been using on our Macbook. All of a sudden it stopped appearing yesterday. The light still comes on and the drive runs. I bought a new one to double check and the new one (with new cable) also does not appear (on disk utility or anywhere else). So it must be something with my compuer. The mac is plugged into the AC outlet while testing. When I test the drive on my PC laptop, it appears under device manager. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I still haven't been able to figure this out. Any ideas out there would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • How to partition my second hard drive in my Macbook to use as data with both Mac Mountain Lion and bootcamp Windows 7

    Hi guys
    So this is my dilemma...
I have a 13" macbook pro, I have just installed a 128GB SSD and am using that as the main boot drive and the bootcamp. I have split that hard drive in half (64gb each), one half is for OS X and the other half for Windows 7, no data is being stored on the SSD.
I have also replaced the Super drive with the original 500GB Sata drive and am wanting to use that as my Data drive. I want to partition that drive as 400GB for OS X data and 100GB Windows 7 Data (windows is only going to be used for work which wont be using too much storage.
Lets call the SSD as the OS drive and the 500GB as the Data drive...
Now i have currently formatted the Data drive in Disk Utility as MSDOS (FAT) so that both OS X and Windows can read data from it. I am not really fussed with the Mac being able to read what is on the Windows partition or vice versa but i do want to be able to store files larger than 4GB.
In the Windows bootcamp i have formatted the data drive partition as NTFS and that seems to work but I now cannot store files in the Mac partiton that are larger than 4GB, how to i get both HFS and NTFS to work on one physical hard drive to remove the 4GB limitation?
I hope i have explained the situation clearly enough.
    Thanks
    Ash

FAT32, what Mac/OS X/Apple calls MSDOS FAT, can only store files smaller then 4GBs in size. That is the limit of FAT32. So all you need to do is format the partition you want to use for the Mac "Mac Extended (journaled)" (If you can on a MBR partition table drive, Not sure) or exFAT.
But be aware that Apple's implementation of exFAT is flawed and Windows may not be able to read a exFAT partition formatted by OS X.
Everytime I have tried to format a drive exFAT on a mac and nthen move it to a Windows computer, that is Win 7 that natively support exFAT, Windows could not read the drive.
    Good Luck

  • Sharing Scanner from Mac Os X Lion to Windows

Is there a way to share a Scanner from my Mac OS X Lion Server to a Windows 7 PC?
I know that there's no official support to do this, but perhaps someone in the forums have done it already with some third-party software.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Insert the disc in the drive and reboot. After the chime hold down the Option key for a one time boot menu. If after that screen comes up you don't see the Superdrive and or Snow Leopard DVD as a boot option then the SD is bad and need to be replaced. You could then go to another Mac and create a USB install thumb drive of Snow Leopard and use that to do the reinstall.
But you do not have to repost this same question over and over again in different threads.
