Data encryption for short term protection?

As for the present DPM release 2012 R2 UR1, there is no support for encryption of data to DPM disk. Do anyone know if/when this is planned in future releases??
/Amir

if you look on the versions (DPM 2007 (2008 year) - 2012 R2 (2013)) that
will have to wait a long time :)

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4058.list-of-build-numbers-for-system-center-data-protection-manager-dpm.aspx
I think that if you need encrypted data you can
1) Use DPM as virtual machine with vhd data and encrypt Volume with vhd DPM data
2) Use Firestreamer
Have a nice day !!!

  • What "Type" to use for Short Term TPMs?

    Hi,
I am working on Trade Promotions Management and was curious to know what promotion type is usually associated with Short Term Promotions?
    Thanks

    Hi Shub,
Please read below for the purpose of using Types for TPM.
You define types for your marketing projects. The settings you make for a type define aspects of the business logic of all marketing projects of this type.
You can define multiple types. You can create marketing projects of the types that you define.
You assign a partner determination procedure to a type. You do this to control which business partners can be assigned to a marketing project of this type. Depending on the settings in the partner determination procedure, it may not be possible to assign business partners who are not in the assigned partner determination procedure. Note that when a marketing project has the status Created, you can still assign business partners who are not in the assigned partner determination procedure, but you cannot release the marketing project. If you do not assign a partner determination procedure, you can still assign business partners when the marketing project has the status Created, but you cannot release the marketing project.
You can also create and assign objectives specifically for a type or create pairs of objectives and tactics for this type.
In most cases, you use Types for BI reporting purposes and as part of standard delivery also, it depends on the above factors on what Type you should  use for Short Term or any other TPMs.
    Award points if found helpful.

so long as you are positive what you are editing is still 1080i (right click the sequence or in the timelinew, and select properties to double check). If you Print To Video back to the camera or deck, then you will still have HDV. The next stage completely relies on the projector used at the theatre screens, you need to find out what format they require, if they need something on film, then you'll have to take your tape to a production house or facility who can do the conversion for you. Any production house worth their salt should be able to handle a HDV tape, and do the conversion to whatever format no problem for you.
(checkout dvfilm.com - may be interesting for you to read)
So long as you are able to output to tape, or possibly an uncompressed quicktime/avi file. then you should be fine, it entirely depends on the format the projector requires.
Even if you have to downconvert to SD, don't worry shooting in HDV won't have been in vain, it will still look great, better than any DV camera. It's a fairly common practice nowadays.
anyway i'd speak to your theatre manager and find out from them what format they require, and go from there, otherwise you have all the equipment you could need, anything else such as film conversion would HAVE to be done by a facility, and should only be a few hundered bucks i think.

  • Vendor Consignment Price Issue for short term Price Contracts with Vendors

Hi Gurus, We are using Consignment Process successfully but very recently we faced a problem on some of our vendors who change the price every quarter.e.g. when the Buyer cuts the Consignment PO for 1000 pieces and receive it in K stock for 10$ the price is valid for 3 months in the Info record  when we start moving from K stock to Company stock after 3 months the price is changing in info record and consumption happening after 3 Months  is causing issues as you all know there is NO PO history tracking for Consignment PO's except 101k movement.we could manually do the jugglery by NOT changing the Info record untill the full 1000 qty of the PO is received but the problem is if there are multiple PO's and if the consumption is pulling stock from 2 different PO's then we have issues
E.g. PO1 1000 Qty Info rec  validity May 1st to july 31st 10$ per piece
PO2  500   Qty Info Rec Validity Aug 1st to Oct 31st 12$ per piece
First consumption 411k for 800 Pcs on june 25th happens with 10 $
Second consumption 411k for 600 Pcs happen on Sep10th will happen with 12$ but the vendor wants 200 out of 600 with 10$ and 400 with 12$ how do we handle this situation without manually changing the info record please advise
As Consumption and settlement happens in MRKO which is totally unlinked with the PO. Is there a way we can handle the situation. There could be multiple consignment PO's which bring stock in Consignment

    Hi DP,
As SAP doesn't Support Delivery cost settlement with the consignment process to seprate G/L ( Similar to accruals ), you need to go for Z development which while posting MRKO will be executed with refernce to PO & Issue Document Posting the freight Value to Appropriate fright G/L .

  • FMS Admin Wanted for Short Term Contract Work

I know there are tons of services out there for linux/windows administrators, but can anyone point me to where I can find an experienced FMS administrator?  We need some help configuring our server for some high traffic loads.  This would be a paid gig.

If the candidate had all the correct attributes then it could indeed be an option.

  • Short term tape based protection

    hi,
I am taking short term protection using tape for file server. and retention period is 2 weeks. so it is weekly full backup (which is defined in short term protection)
i can see that after 7 days it is taking new tape for full backup and for incremental backup.
i want to minimize usage of tapes. how can i do that? since a lots of space is wasted on tape.
    --joseph

    Hi,
This is by design and no way to change it.
    See the following TechNet page:
    How DPM Uses Tape Libraries
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757885.aspx
Short-term tape "full and incremental" option
The full backup will require a free tape for each scheduled job, and the incremental backup for all data sources will be appended to a single separate tape.
As tapes fill up, new free tapes will be allocated.
When the next full backup occurs, it will require another free tape, and subsequent incremental backups will be appended to another free tape.

  • DPM 2012 - stand alone drive - Short/Long term protection to tape

We are migrating from BE to DPM 2012. I'm trying to configure DPM 2012 for both short term & long term protection - both using tape (stand alone drive). The goal is:
Daily backups (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu) - 2 weeks retention
Weekly backup (Friday) - 4 weeks retention
Monthly backup (last weekly backup) on every month - 15 m onths retention
I've configured the short term protection for daily and weekly backups. Monthly backups are configured under long term protection. Daily and weekly backups are working as expected. However when it comes time for the Monthly, the DataSet copy jobs are failing.
As I understand it, DPM is expecting another drive to copy the weekly backup tape.
How I can achieve above goals ? Backup to disk is not an option.

    Hi,
Any time DPM schedules a dataset copy job, you will need more than one tape drive, there is no way around that requirement.

  • What actually gets written to tape by long-term protection?

I've been reviewing our long term recovery goals and am confused by the Customize Recovery Goal screen. The only documentation I can find for it only gives brief descriptions and is for 2010, I'm using 2012 R2.
Customizing Recovery Goals for Long-Term Protection
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399209.aspx
I notice it says 'Back up every:' under the recovery goals, not 'colocate'. Does this mean that it will take a backup and write it directly to tape instead of writing the recovery points on disk to tape?
The specify long-term goals screen in the Modify Group wizard says 'All long-term tape-based protection uses full backups.' Does this mean the file and application recovery points from the short term protection aren't written to tape?

    Hi,
    <snip>
What actually gets written to tape by long-term protection?
    >snip<
It really depends if you are using short-term to disk or not.
    1) You are using short-term to disk, long term to tape (D2D2T)
In this configuration the last successful disk based recovery point is written to tape.
The data is read from DPM recovery point and copied to tape.
    2) You are using short-term to tape and long term to tape (D2T2T)
The first LT recovery goal is a full backup taken from the protected server.
Other LT goals are tape copies from lesser goals, so you need multiple tape drives.
As noted - all long term tape backups are full backups, no incremental backups are possible.

  • Extending Long-Term Protection (tape)

    Hi all,
This should hopefully be a simple Q&A.  I'm using local disk for short-term backup - roughly 30 days.  I also have a tape library attached that I use for Long-Term protection. The protection group is configured to keep weekly run tapes for
8 weeks, and the monthly tapes are marked to keep for 3 years.
If I reconfigure the protection group to keep the monthly tapes for 5 years, will it update the time-stamp for any previously writtent monthly tape?
Example:  On May 1, a monthly tape was written w/ a 3 year retention period (as per the protection group).  If I edit the PG to reflect 5 years instead of 3, will that tape on May 1 update with the 5 year retention policy?  Or will it still only
reflect 3 years, because that was the policy at the time of the write?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Yes, by default the monthly tape recovery points should reflect the new recovery retention period.  We introduced a registry setting to prevent that from occurring for customers who do not want the default behavior.
    DPM 2012 Sp1 UR2 KB2706783 see Issue 8
Expiry dates for valid datasets that are already written to tape are changed when the retention range is changed during a protection group modification.
For example, a protection group is configured for long-term tape recovery points with custom long-term recovery goals. Recovery Goal 1 has a smaller retention range than other recovery goals. In this configuration, if a protection group is changed to remove
Recovery Goal 1 and to keep other recovery goals, the datasets that were created by using Recovery Goal 1 have their retention range changed to the retention range of the other recovery goals.
To work around this problem, create the IsDatasetExpiryDateChangeInModifyPgAllowed DWORD under the following subkey, and then set its value to 0:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration\MediaManager

  • Short-term backup to tape

    Hi,
What are the pros and cons of using tape (VTL) for short-term backups in DPM 2012 R2?
The reason this might be an option is that we are using a Virtual Tape Library (EMC DataDomain) which provides great deduplication rates.

    Hi,
I don't see any real cons except that the virtual tapes cannot be taken offsite, however that VTL does allow for replication to another DD VTL offsite, so that is a good option if $ is not a problem.
As mentioned, it does do dedupe, so if you backup the same data you get incredible dedup savings. Speed and reliability are other pro's for VTL since dirty tape drives are no longer an issue.

  • Short term planning & long term Planning

    Hi PP Guru's
!  . I have scenario like this I am having many trading Plant and the requirements are collected and Sales person preparing VA31
Scheduling agreement for 1 week ( Short term ) also for 10 weeks ( long term ). In trading plant ( planning  / delivery plant ) there
is no master data other than material master is Maintained in SAP system
2  . I am having Production Plant  and  need  to address this requirement May be through SPk 40 .
My question is How the requirement should I transfer whether i need to manually create manually PIR and copy into Production
Plant or is there any other way to transfer the requirements from SA ( VA31 )
    3. I want to adopt planniing strategy 52 - Planning without Final assembly because my Planning of certain SFG Procured externally
should not trigger as per my FG requirements but as per my rolling Plan for 10 weeks for which I am PR having from MRP for
Long term procurement material which is having lead time say 2 Months I am converting PR into PO using ME59N transaction with
      weekly Lot size .
    4.  For Short term Procurement material I have lot size as TB which is having less lead time say 2 - 5 days max.
Could you please tell me using this strategy 52 how my PIR will consume and  Reduce and in which stage . If i am doing PGI using
641 Movement type from Production Plant and PGR using 101 movement type .
    5. For my Procurement for Long term with A class material how can I reduce my inventory may be space constraint and Cost
Constraint how can I receive this material for my Production.
Marks will be awarded with Max for right answer

  • On Enabling TDE Column Encryption for 11g 11.2.0.4 , will SYS user able to decrypt, encrypted column !

    Hi ,
we are planning to implement Transparent Data Encryption  for 11.2.0.4 11g DB .
My Query is Whether SYS  DB user will be able to Decrypt all encrypted Columns.
we have tested for Virtual Private Database Policy, and found out that it applies Policy for all DB Users except SYS.
so now we have a query whether encryption will be applied for all DB users except for SYS.?
    regards
    Abdulrahman
(P.S: attached is document how we tested for Virtual Private Database , if we can somehow disable SYS access to specific tables also our compliance requirement will be met  thanks )

    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e40393/asotrans.htm#ASOAG600
"Transparent Data Encryption(TDE) enables you to encrypt sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, stored in tables and tablespaces. Encrypted data is transparently decrypted for a database user or application that has access to data. TDE helps protect data stored on media in the event that the storage media or data file gets stolen."
    TDE encrypts data blocks.
Users are not aware that the objects they query are encrypted - this is the reason it is called 'transparent'.

  • Data Encryption - Removable Storage - User-Defined Password

    Hello,
we are testing Data encryption for USB Storage and want "Enable encryption via user-defined password" to the entire device.
    But this is not working.
When i select "Apply password encryption to this folder only" and copy files to the specified folder, i got asked, which password i want to use and it works fine on the 2nd device without Endpoint Security Client to decrypt the files.
But reselect "Apply password encryption to the entire device" i got no prompt to set a password, neither i can open the files on the 2nd device.
I tried a lot. Formatting the USB Device (multiple times), clean the RSD Password, rebooting the devices, but nothing works.
Can someone confirm this issue or better give a solution?! )
