Data folder in volumes

Can I delete a folder in "Volumes" named "Data" and has a red circle with a minus sign on it?

NO!  Unless you want to possibly disable your MBP.  These are not folders that a user should ever touch.

When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:
    Time Machine:

              Auto backup: YES

Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?

  • LR 5 my external hard drive no longer appears as a hard drive but as a folder under "Volumes"

I am running LR 5 on a MacBook pro and my external hard drive no longer appears as a hard drive but as a folder under "Volumes". will this affect my ability to search and store in this external hard drive?  How can I get it back to normal?

I just started having the same problem, oddly enough with a LaCie 500GB D2 Quadra external. Had it connected via FW800 then suddenly it won't appear in the Finder.
It shows up as an "Unknown Device" in the System Profiler under the FireWire Bus.
I do need the data on it so which solution is easier?
Replace the housing? Or am I better off calling LaCie and using the warrenty?
    Thanks,

  • ITunes creating duplicate files under a hidden folder named "Volumes".

It seems my iTunes program is secretly making a duplicate file in a hidden folder called "Volumes" on my laptop hard drive. It's now maxxed out my drive and I need to both remove the "Volumes" folder and make sure it doesn't get created and happen again.
    Details:
Using a Powerbook G4 with an 80gb drive. Using iTunes 8. The iTunes library program is in the usual place on the lap top hard drive but the music library folder, where all the files get saved to, is on an external drive labeled "Media".
Clicking normally and searching around my laptop hard drive, I do not see or am able to access the folder named "Volumes". But I know it exists as I ran a scan program called jdiscreport and it clearly shows a huge folder, 45gb, named "Volumes". There are also a few old flacs in the "Volume folder also. The iTunes duplicate files are in identically named folders as the external drive: iTunes Music located within Media, located within Volumes.
When I rip a CD in iTunes (or the iTunes-LAME program I sometimes use), the files do go to the proper external folder as expected and as I've set in the iTunes preferences section. So why is iTunes also saving the same thing to this mystery "Volumes" folder on the lap top hard drive? How do I get rid of this folder without wiping my drive? How do I stop it from continuing?
Help, I have 2gb of free space left!
    Thanks, James

Hi I am having a similar issue, It all started when I tried to restore from the Time Machine and it threw a error back stating that there is no disk available. I was wondering how come and went to find out what is happening and was shocked to find out that actually my entire Macintosh HD has a duplicate copy inside the /Volumes folder. I went to the XTERM to investigate and found that the / (root) has a Users folder where all my stuffs like pictures, music, movies, documents reside and the same data or content is duplicated in the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder
I first thought that it was only a link, but I later found that it is not a link and it is indeed a physical copy of all my User folders inside the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder and actually occupying my Hard disk space.
I am not sure how this happened or how it is duplicating itself. I am also afraid to delete the stuffs inside the /Volumes folder as it might crash my system (it is already hidden - I assume it is hidden for some purpose). Please suggest any options, how I can get rid of these duplicated data and how to avoid such duplication in the future.
    Thanks

  • Did Time Machine put 274 GB of data in my Volumes directory?

My first hint that something was wrong was that Carbon Copy Cloner complained that my 600GB encrypted disk image wasn't big enough to hold my backup.
I knew that couldn't be write. My data was roughly 300GB.
So I fired up the superb (free) OmniDiskSweeper and found there were 274GB of data in my /Volumes directory (hidden system folder, to visit it with Finder use "Go To Folder" and type Volumes.
That Folder normally holds Unix Aliases, not files.
It turned out to hold two copies of my hard drive, one fairly complete, the other a mere 40GB, both dated within one day of Jan 26, 2011. They were named after my Time Capsule hosted Time Machine image.
I'm pretty sure TIme Machine put them there during a Time Capsule backup. I've never seen reports of this, but I have seen reports of similar behaviors with disrupted Time Machine backups to a local firewire drive.
I deleted the 600,000+ files and OmniDiskSweeper reported Volumes now uses 12kb.
Has anyone else heard reports of this? I'd guess I'm not the only person who's experienced this, though some friends claim I'm cursed. I don't think it impacted my backups much, neither Time Machine nor SuperDuper nor CarbonCopyCloner actually copy the /Volumes folder, there's not supposed to be anything important there.

Maybe a good tip to prevent dopplegangers hidden in Bombich CCC website?
    http://help.bombich.com/kb/dmg-and-remote/a-caveat-for-backing-up-to-a-remote-ma cintosh-that-has-no-user-logged-in
I am going to do this and see if it prevents this problem from happening
A copy of the link's text follows because he sometimes deprecates a real gem posted in his support site.
A caveat for backing up to a remote Macintosh that has no user logged in
For "improved detachability", Mac OS X will unmount any non-internal volumes that are attached to the system when you log out. So, for example, if you log out of your computer while a USB or Firewire hard drive enclosure is attached, you can detach those hard drive enclosures from the system without having to manually unmount them first. This is a good thing — it would be annoying if you had to log back in to your system just to eject a drive. The downside of this, though, is that if you have a scheduled backup task that runs when no user is logged in, the destination volume may be unavailable. For a local backup, CCC will attempt to manually mount the destination volume. When the destination of your backup task is a remote Macintosh, though, CCC will not be able to mount that volume prior to backing up.
If you anticipate backing up to a remote Macintosh that may be sitting at the loginwindow, you can change the behavior of Mac OS X to not unmount detachable volumes. To change this behavior, run this command in the Terminal application on the remote machine:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool YES
Note for Snow Leopard users: This workaround does not work on Snow Leopard 10.6.0 to 10.6.3. If you require this functionality, please apply the 10.6.4 update (or the latest available) for the best experience.

  • Data folder can not be opened in finding " AirPort Time Capsule " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist .

    Hi
I have a " AirPort Time Capsule " (firmware 7.7.3) When I try to open the data folder in "finder". Then I got the message  " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist". I have a lot of data and I can understand why I get this message?
    Anyone who can help? Thanks..
    Br. Bo

Get a USB drive of 2TB or more.. assuming your TC is 2TB. Either preformatted Mac or plug into your Mac and format it standard Mac OS Extended Journaled in disk utility.
Do a full archive of the TC. You do this using airport utility. Do not click the erase disk.. I marked in green.. just the archive.. that is to backup the internal disk to the USB disk. It is not fast.. take it that the process will go at around 40-50GB/hr.
Once you complete the archive .. it is a direct image of the data on your TC.. you can then plug it into your computer directly.. and then try and open the files you lost.. if you cannot open them.. open disk utility and fix the permissions.
    http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/13/repair-disk-permissions-mac-os-x/
Or try the methods apple recommends..
OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac
It is possible to fix things on the USB drive because it is locally mounted.. but you cannot fix it on TC which is network drive.

  • I have lost pictures in iPhoto, but I can see them in the data folder, except they are only thumbnail size.  They will not open at regular size and are showing unreadable in the "originals" folder.  I've rebuilt and nothing is restoring these pics.

I have lost pictures in my iPhoto.  We moved my iPhoto to a external hard drive and I believe since then, I have random pics missing.  Some pics will show up in the "photos" and some show with a title and a blank picture.  When I click on "package contents" in iPhoto, I have found the "Originals" folder where all the pics are pulling from and the file is there but won't open.  However, in the DataXML folder under package contents, I can open the file but it is much smaller (supposed to be 1 MG, but showing in the data folder as 63kb).  How can I get these pics restored in the Originals folder?  I've rebuilt the library several times and I just ran the iPhoto Library Manager and it won't pull from the data file.  Help!!

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Photos in Data folder not appearing in iPhoto albums

I was looking through some older albums the other day and noticed that many of them only had 1 picture in them. It did not contain a bunch of other missing photos, but rather no other photos at all. After freaking out for a second, I went into the iPhoto Library ("Show package contents") and in the Data folder under the album name for that year, found the JPG files for all these photos.
Is there a way to "rebuild" the iPhoto database or something? It seems to not be synchronized with the contents of the Data folder. I'm wondering how many other albums this may have happened to.
I did recently (in the last 6 months) upgrade to iPhoto '08 so I'm wondering if it's some strange side effect of the upgrade process.

    LarryHN wrote:
1 - are you talking about albums (the logical entities that link to photos in the library) or events - the primary way to display the contents of your library
I'm talking about the Events themselves but also the Albums that I created using pictures in those Events.
2 - it is recommended that you do not mess around in the iPhoto library - doing so can corrupt or library and create problems
I was not messing around but rather confirming that there were still JPG files in there as opposed to them having disappeared completely.
3 - the photos in the data folder are not associated with albums - they are the thumbnails for displaying photos in events or albums
Cool, that helps. I checked the Originals folder and found the original JPGs there too. I'm sure they're not thumbnails because they are all 600KB+.
4 - you can rebuild by launching iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and command (apple) keys and choosing the first three rebuild options - but this does not sound like a good bet
Why is rebuilding not a good idea?
5 - can you describe your situation in a bit more detail using the iPhoto terminology so we are all talking about the same things
    Hope that helped!
    Thanks,

  • I still have no way how to deal with the LabView Data folder automatically created in the My Documents folder whenever I run the application

I tried numerous ways that some people suggested in this forum but did not succeed in having the LabView Data folder created somewhere else than in My Documents when running a built LabView application. Changing the target destination folder did not help at all. A member suggested to put some line like " defaultdestination = ..." or so into the build file, but I did not know where exactly to put such a line. That folder created is particularly anoying for people who don't normally use LabView but are only using the application. Please let me know when you LabView Experts out there have found a way to eliminate or relocate the creation of that folder at application startup.
    Thanks a lot.
    Tim, Van

    Tim,
use the path constant located in the Functions pallette under 'File I/O->File Constants->Default Data Directory'. It refers either to the default directory (which is (osdatadir)\Labview Data on my WinXP system) OR TO A NON DEFAULT PATH if you have defined one. To define a non-default path, got to the menu 'Tools->Options...' and change the entry under 'Paths->Default Data Directory'. This change will create an entry in the labview.ini file (located where the labview.exe is), e.g. the entry 'DefaultDataFileLocation=d:\temp' is created when I change the default data dir to 'D:\temp'.
Now for a compiled .exe with the name (say) myapp.exe you will find a file myapp.ini in the same location where myapp.exe is. It is usually an emtpy file directly after the application build process. Put the line 'DefaultDataFileLocation=(your path)' in this file.
Users of your compiled app can either
    - edit this .ini file to change the default,
    - or you can make the menu entry 'Tools->Options...' accessible in the built VI
    - or you can provide a self written dialog in your app and modify the myapp.ini programmatically
(This last way is probably not a good one since the user might have to relaunch myapp.exe in order to affect a change of the 'Default Data Directory' path constant)

  • Deleted Data folder in iPhoto, now NO photos!

I just deleted my Data folder thinking it would free some space on my computer. Stupid, I know. I tried rebuilding my thumbnails and such but only have 7 photos to import (from my iPhone). Where did they go? And how can I restore them?
I can view the thumbnails in my Pictures file but I can't move them over to iPhoto. What do I do?

    1 - remember two rules:
-- Always have a current backup so when something happens -and it will - you can simply load your backup
-- never make any changes of any sort to the contents or structure of any database - including iPhoto
2 - unless you can restore your data folder exactly as it was before you deleted it you will have to start over - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop - launch iPhoto and create a new library - open the iPhoto library on your desktop and open the originals folder and drag each folder in it onto the iPhoto library window (or on the iPhoto icon in the dock) - this will recreate events with all of your photos - no edits, no projects, albums, keepsakes, MobileMe galleries, etc
Once your new library is finished and tested you can trash the remaining parts of the iPhoto library that is on your desktop

The Ipad2 Application Data folder is taking up huge space in C: Drive. How can I shift the User Application data for iPad2 to another Drive?

Thanks a lot for the response. Yes, I am checking my C: drive data thoroughly now, including the hidden folders, to ascertain if something else can be moved, as per your suggestion.

  • Made trouble for myself by moving data folder.  Need help to fix.

I did something that was not smart. I was trying to access photos via online and I moved my iphoto data folders to the desktop. Now, I don't know how to move the data folder back and I don't want to screw it up even worse. If I go into iphoto the thumbnails are blank, but when you double-click you can see the photo. How do I fix my careless mistake?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First off, try move the Data folder back:
    Quit iPhoto
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Drag the Data Folder in there.
    Close the Window.
    Start iPhoto.
I was trying to access photos via online
I've no idea what this means but There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Why can't I get my old bookmarks and passwords back using the 'Old Firefox Data' folder?

    Hi,
    Ok.....
I have just recovered my Samsung laptop back to the day I purchased it (for a fresh start)
I have the 'Old Firefox Data' folder on an external hard drive that was created a few weeks ago when I refreshed Firefox
I've tried this many times but with no luck what so ever:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile
    I've re-installed Firefox 3 times
I've created new profiles and deleted others
2 Days down and I'm still can't get any of my bookmarks or passwords etc and for some reason when I create a new profile I can't find it as it's not in the location 'Profile Manager' says it is.
I'm now total lost and getting stressed out as I really need this data.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hello,
    Thank you for your reply's.
I've been able to restore/apply all of my data (bookmarks, passwords etc) on my girl friends computer without any issues at all, therefore it's not something I'm doing wrong.
I've been so involved with trying to get my profile back on my computer I hadn't noticed that Firefox is not operating as it should, I've found:
    - I'm unable to view/open my profile folder from 'Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder' (when I click 'Show Folder' nothing happens) however when I go to 'C:\Users\AutoStar\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles' I can view the data.
    - I'm unable to save any bookmarks
    - Sometimes when I try to close a tab it will not close as such however once the 'x' is clicked I'm then unable to view the page but the tab still stays visible
As I said I recovered the laptop back to the day I purchased it (for a fresh start) so Firefox was a fresh install I've also uninstalled and re-installed a few times now but the result is always the same.
    Any ideas?

  • Images stored in Application Data folder are not visible in HTML Page generated by AIR Application

    Hi Programmers,
I have an AIR application where in I am capturing the images of persons via web cam and storing them in the Application Data folder of the users machine. I am successfully able to do so.
However, when generating the report in the HTML format from within the AIR application, I use the image captured and give the absolute path. but some how the image doesnt appear in the browser, I get the icon for image not found.
When I right click on the image, select property and copy the image path in new browser, I can see that image. Any thoughts on why this is happening?

  • I have Old Firefox Data folder before i formated my laptop . but i just cant find how to use this folder for my new firefox to regain all the bookmarks i had.

I had some issue with my Firefox (it crashes when i starts), so i format my laptop to factory setting and now i got new Firefox installed and left with this Old Firefox Data folder.
    my question is :
Ii understand the profile in my Old Firefox Data contains my Bookmarks and information i previously had before i formatted, i just do not know how to apply this Old Firefox Data to my new Firefox to get what i need.
How do i use Old Firefox Data to restore all my bookmarks and information?

You can move some files from the "Old Firefox Data" folder to the current Firefox profile folder.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
It is best to only copy what you need and avoid copying the full profile content.
