Data Guard Installation

Hi all,
Just to confirm, i will install, configure Data Guard (i already done this before but with the primary database down) and i want to do that without interrupt the primary database. Do i need to shutdown primary database at any time of configuration of standby database?? I don't think so!
steps:
1-Configure all parameters
2-Take a backup
3-connect using rman target / auxiliary sys/passd@stbdb
4-duplicate the database
Is jus that ins't???
Tks,
Paulo.

Even though the example shown in the docs indicated MOUNT mode for the primary database, the primary can be in the OPEN mode to create the standby database.

  • Data Guard Agent, Authentication Failure

    I'm working with two Windows 2003 servers, attempting to use one as a standby and one as a primary database use Data Guard. However, I'm having a bit of trouble when trying to get one server to communicate through the Management Agent and Management Service. I've already toggled the Local Security Policy (Log On As Batch Job) setting in Windows, unlocked the Monitoring Profile account, etc. I've also tried to set the Preferred Host Credentials for the database, but it doesn't seem to want to authenticate the Windows 2003 Administrator user.
    Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Check the following:
    Does the user have administrative privilege on the system?
    Is the user running this part of ORA_DBA group?
    Does the user have the local security policy "Logon as Batch Job"?
    Have you set the OS Preferred Credential? If you are a domain user, this will be looking for domain\user name instead of just the user name.
    On another note:
    Have you doen any upgrades to the OMS repository?
    If yes, is the new Repository compatible with the EM Console?

  • 11g Active Data Guard Software?

    I got a copy of the 11g (for SUN SPARC) from the edelivery.com, and got the patch for 11.1.0.7 from metalink.
    I upgraded 110.2.0.4 to 11.1.0.7. But, I could not get the ADG to work.
    Here is what happened when I queried the database status.
    --------------------------- begin ---------------------------------
    SQL> alter database recover managed standby database cancel;
    Database altered.
    SQL> alter database open;
    Database altered.
    SQL> select status from v$instance
    2 ;
    STATUS
    OPEN
    SQL> select OPEN_MODE from v$database;
    OPEN_MODE
    READ ONLY
    SQL> alter database recover managed standby database using current logfile disconnect;
    Database altered.
    SQL> select OPEN_MODE from v$database;
    OPEN_MODE
    MOUNTED
    SQL> select status from v$instance;
    STATUS
    MOUNTED
    ---------------------------- end ------------------------------------
    Turning on the Redo Apply put the database mode back to 'MOUNTED'. For ADG, it should remain 'OPEN'. I suspect this copy of 11g does not have the ADG feature.
    Is there a way I could check whether the ADG is installed? Is there a directory under $ORACLE_HOME or a script under $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin that indicates the ADG is indeed installed?
    Where did you guys get your software?
    Thanks very much in advance.

    You should have the right software and the right option installations in Entreprise Edition (otherwise Data Guard would not work at all).
    Did you check both alert log for possible error messages ?
    I think you should open the database in read-only mode instead of read-write mode:
    alter database open read only;See following OTN example: http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/oracle-database-11g-top-features/11g-dataguard.html

  • Data Guard, Grid Control 11, GI 11gR2, and DB 10gR2

    Hi,
    I'm seeing a rather odd behavior, and I'm hoping someone else has already been through this and knows what I'm doing wrong.
    I have an installation of Grid Control 11.1 (recently patched) which I am using to create Data Guard replication of some 10gR2 database instances. For some confusing reason, sometimes when I use the GC wizard to add the standby database, it creates the listener for the new database in the EM Agent's OH/network/admin/listener.ora. Other times, it creates it in the 10gR2 DB's OH/network/admin/listener.ora. When it does the former, creation of the standby DB seems to work fine, but when it does the latter, not so much.
    If it matters, my primary DB is 10.2.0.4 on 10.2 grid infrastructure, and my standbys are 10.2.0.4 on GI 11.2.0.2.
    I have applied the latest PSU to my agents, so they are all the same version, so I'm confused as to why this might be happening. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    My recommendation would be to not use OEM Grid Control to create your standby.
    Even when it is working properly ... it does not create what I would consider a good implementation. Just as I don't consider the vanilla installation of the Oracle database by the OUI (all control files and redo logs in the same directory with the datafiles) very good.
    You'd be far better off hand crafting your standby using two listeners ... one for public and one for replication.

  • Data Guard - Grid Control - Standby database

    Heys,
    now I have to RAC Clusters. The next step would be to setup a standby database to prepare a graceful switchover.
    But what are the next steps ?
    I am currently installing GridControl on a seperate host with the option: Enterprise Manager10g Grid Control Using an Existing Database
    The installation is still running....
    What are the steps ? Any documentation ? Any tutorials ?
    Do I need to install agents on each client in the cluster ?
    What about the name resolution ?
    Any listener configuration necessary ?
    Is the configuration done via data guard command line ?
    Christian

    Bear in mind that the standby creation wizard in Grid Control will only create a non-RAC standby. Once you get to Grid Control 10.2.0.5 and your databases are in 11g you will be able to use the Grid Control convert to RAC wizard on your standby. Prior to that you will have to convert the standby to RAC manually or follow the above mentioned paper and create the standby by hand and then import it into Grid Control.

  • Init SID .ora during configuration of Data Guard - advice required

    Hi All,
    I am looking to implement data guard across 2 RAC clusters. One cluster will be primary and the other is for Disaster Recovery.
    I have already set up the two 11g R 2 RAC clusters on RHEL 5 and now need some pointers to good docs for data guard install.
    Can some one direct me to good step by step info for configuring data guard between to RAC clusters - detailed explanations of each step would be useful too, in particular around the init.ora file configuration changes between the primary and DR sites
    Much appreciated

  • Problem with data guard Creating a Physical Standby Database turorial

    There is a tutorial of Creating a data guard Physical Standby Database:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/ha/dataguard/physstby/physstdby.htm
    I tried to install it on two servers. One for primary database second for physical standby.
    I have error on C. Creating the standby database over the network, action #6:
    "On the standby system, set the ORACLE_SID environment variable to your <physical standby SID> (i.e. orclsby1) and start the instance in NOMOUNT mode with the text initialization parameter file."
    When I try to connect to idle instance there is an error pops up:
    C:\>sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production on Thu May 21 16:28:10 2009

    ERROR:
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    I'v checked listener and it is runned. There is no service for database because there is no database yet.
    The question is did some one installed data guard configuration using this tutorial? Is there any errors in it? What should I do to finish this installation?

    On Windhose for every instance a service must have been created using the oradim command.
    Oracle tutorials are usually Unix-centric, as Windhose is an odd man out, so they don't discuss that bit.
    'Kindly do the needful' and create the service prior to starting the instance in nomount mode
    Hint: oradim is documented and has a help=y clause.
    IIRC there is an option in database control (in the maintenance part) which automates everything.

  • Switchover in a data guard environment using Grid Control 10.2.0.3

    I've tested switchover in a data guard environment using Data Guard Broker in Grid Control.
    However, at times, i receive the message "RemoteOperationException: failed to establish input streaming thread". It looks like it has problems connecting to the remote node using the host credentials supplied. I know the credentials are ok because this worked before. If i test preferred credentials, it's ok too..
    The workaround has been to restart the database and this seems to work.
    Has anyone experienced this?

  • 11.2 DB & Data Guard : ORA-16014 how to archive a sequence?

    Hi,
    I've installed 11.2 Oracle Database in my laptop with Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 and I have created two standby databases, orcl (primary) and orclstby (physical standby). I performed a switchover to orclstby and consequently, orclstby was the new primary and orcl the physical standby, I checked those values with SQLPlus executing the select database_role from v$database statement, so, there were no problems during the switchover.I also shutteddown and started both primary and stanby databases to check all was fine.
    Today, I've tried to start the environment again and I've encountered the following problem during the startup of the primary database:

  • Configure about the DATA GUARD APPLICATION on ORACLE 9i platform

    I have worked on Oracle 9i (9.2.0.1) platform. I have installed Oracle 9i server edition in my machine, and created one database name ORCL.
    I want to configure DATA GUARD APPLICATION in my machine... is it possible?
    if it is then how can I do this...

    Yes, it is possible.
    Please refer to the Dataguard Concepts and Administration Manual for installation guidance.
    Please do not bother to come back to ask further doc questions, showing you are not prepared to do your own work.

  • 10g Data Guard Install Questions... Solaris 9

    Firstly, I've done several Failsafe installes on Wintel platforms, but I'm having a tough time getting started installing Dataguard on Solaris. According to the manual:
    Oracle® Data Guard Broker
    10g Release 1 (10.1)
    Part Number B10822-01
    "The Oracle Data Guard graphical user interface (GUI), which you can use to manage broker configurations, is installed with the Oracle Enterprise Manager software."
    I don't see any link or otherwise access to Data Guard via the 10g Enterprise Manager. Is there something that I missed during install that will allow me access Data Guard GUI?
    I'm stuck
