!!!DATA LOSS!!! Lion falls asleep, breaks active shared drives

Lion falls asleep and breaks active connection to shared drivers. This is from Snow Leapeord that is reading/writing to a drive being shared by Lion. If I don't have someone present, moving the mouse on the Lion machine, the connection will die a horrible death and any data reading/writing stops in its tracks. Nice?

My only compliant is STILL DATA LOSS!!! Networking between Snow Leopard (multiple machines) and Lion is highly unreliable. Connections still drop, resulting in half file transfers and complete DATA LOSS. This doesn't happen between Snow Leopard machines, only between SL and Lion. The fact that this happens at all makes Lion simply unworthy of use. My only work around thus far is to abandon Lion. It is simply not usable.
It doesn't happen between Snow Leopard and Lion either. Quoting http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776 :
Note: Hard disk activity does not prevent display sleep, but it does prevent system sleep. It is not uncommon for the display to sleep before the system goes to sleep if both types of sleep are set to occur after the same length of inactivity.

  • PC Falls Asleep During Home Sharing

Home sharing is working fine on my girlfriend's Sony Vaio laptop running on Windows 7 and the most recent iTunes update. However, after a while, the laptop falls asleep and whatever is being streamed cuts off. This doesn't happen on my Mac, which has the "wake for network access" box checked. Is there something similar I need to do for a PC to keep my home sharing streams from cutting off when the PC goes to sleep?

Yes there is something you do to the PC, but is it your MAC that is shutting off?

  • Can we Access shared drive files through gui_download

    Hi All,..
I am using the method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>GUI_DOWNLOAD to download data into an excel sheet to a shared drive in the network. Is it possoble??. The shared drive is not permanently mapped but i have acces to the shared drive. So will it do, by giving the path that i usually give in the run prompt of Windows, to the above method....
    Thank you in advance!!!!

    Yes,
    Give path like
double back slash followed by <I.P Address>\<foldername>\<file name>

  • Chronic catastrophic data loss with Lion & servers

Auto-save and versions, when combined with multiple users and a server environment virtually guarantees catastrophic data loss.
    Here's how you replicate it.
    (1) Place a photo on a server.
For us, this is where we recommend people keep important files. Their desktop may be backed up with time machine, but the server is RAID 6 with hot spares, and on top of that is backed up every night. Much, much safer.
    (2) Open that photo in preview. Crop it so that you can print it. Close preview. Notice it didn't ask you if you wanted to save?
    (3) Open that file again. It's still cropped. The original? Gone. Choose "Revert to Saved" from the file menu. Notice the large number of empty windows on the right? Yup, you can't get back to the prior version, even though you never saved.
Now, as a network administrator, imagine the consequences of this for your network. Users accessing shared files and making changes they need, but not saving them because they don't need to be saved. Yup, their version is now THE definitive version for the entire network.
The ability to do non-destructive edits is something that computer users have been doing since, well, the dawn of computing more or less. Lion removes this. Now, add on top of that user mistakes in a network environment. User accidentally deletes all the text from a 24 page document. They don't know what to do so they close the app. Unless the backup has run since that 24 page document was created, it's gone. Forever. And ever. Amen.
Go to backups you say? What if the document isn't accessed for six months from when the user accidentally wiped it out. Hope your backup server is petabyte big, because otherwise that data is gone.
This is a huge, huge problem.
    Joel

I am not an idiot. The very reason we are reporting this is that we are testing this and discovered it. It is not about "random people" changing things on the server. People with appropriate access can do catastrophic damage without even realizing it. Yes, I have also reported this via the Lion feedback.
Let me address some of the comments here:
    > There is nothing to prevent someone on Snow Leopard from doing the same thing if anyone can save a document.
That's the problem. Nobody has to actually save to wipe data out with Lion. Versions _does not work_ on server volumes. I have tested this with Lion client and 10.6 server and 10.7 server. Same result. Massive data loss.
    > Plus, any document over two weeks old would pop-up a big "locked" dialog if the user tried to modify it in Lion. You wouldn't get that before.
Great. Documents can only be inadvertently destroyed for two weeks. Not sure how this makes anything better.
    >And why do you have Time Machine on the desktop instead of on the Server? It seems like it would more handy there.
The server is backed up, as are the clients. It's irrelevant to the problem being reported.
    >You are the network administrator. Disable Preview and get your users a decent image editor.
Great idea! Until Photoshop supports versions. Microsoft has announced support for versions with office. I guess we'll have to disable that as well. Maybe we should try to fix the actual problem rather than just disabling software that used to work perfectly and moving on...
    > The Versions feature is absolutely not appropriate for use in a multi-user context.
I agree. So do mac users stop using servers now? Doesn't seem like a good option.
    > I find it hard to believe that any competent administrator would 1) upgrade clients to Lion this soon after release
I have no clients except my own on Lion at this point, for testing. This is exactly the kind of problem I need to trace down before I deal with huge issues from my users. Also, what happens when we buy new machines? Lion only...
    > and 2) have versions enabled on shared disk.
We can turn off versions on a shared disk? I do not see any way to do this. Please enlighten me!
    > 1) There is no evidence that the original poster has actully upgraded any client or is a network administrator.
I am a network administrator. This only happens with Lion and versions. I have tested this problem against both 10.6 server and 10.7 server. It exists on either.
    > 2) Version is a feature of Lion, not the network. The scenario described by the original poster could occur on any non-HFS+ disk.
The problem is that versions _does not work_ on an AFP server, but acts as if it does. When you use "revert to save" you find that there are no versions. Not good...

  • My 2008 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion now falls asleep regardless of what is or is not happening.

First the good news. My 2008 MacBook Pro, which used to not fall asleep unless forced to do so (lid closed or command issued) now falls asleep. The bad news is that it will fall asleep even if a program is doing something and I'm not physically doing anything. More accurately it will fall asleep when uploading to Box.net, or when downloading map updates for my GPS. It also falls asleep when EyeTV is converting shows, but not when it's recording shows. I have third party apps that can keep it awake, but shouldn't my MBP recognize that something is happening and to not fall asleep?

  • Data loss in the secure file transfer using java

    Hi,
My java Appllication uses the sftp(secure file transfer protocol) for file transferring. when the load is high like 150 GB , data loss occuring for some files especially last chunk of data is missing.
    Core file transfer code
    while (true)
int read = bis.read(buffer); //Reading bytes into the byte array (buffer) from network stream (bis).
    if (read==-1) {
break; //Break the loop, if there are no more bytes available in the InputStream.
bos.write(buffer,0,read); //Writing the same number of bytes what we read into buffer byte array into OutputStream
complete.update(buffer,0,read); //Giving the same number of bytes what we read above to the checksum calculation.
bytesSoFar += read; //Incrementing the bytes that we have read from the source.
//if the bytes transferred are equal to the source file size
    If (bytesSoFar == fileInfo.getFileSize().intValue())
    // Calculate the file checksum.
// Update DbAuditLog with checksum and no. of bytes read
    else
// Update DbAuditLog with no. of bytes read
    bos.flush();
Please help , why the data loss is happening when the big size files transfer
    Note:
1.150 gb not a single file multiple files.
2.SFTP no java specific API, So connection is happening through java .io.sockect connection

so, if you are not getting any exceptions, yet the data is incorrect, it sounds like you are having actual network issues. i'd start looking at things like the actual network cards in the computer as well other equipment involved in the transfer. since you are not getting exceptions, the network stack obviously thinks nothing was lost over the wire, so either the actual hardware has issues, or the network stack, or the issue is on the sending end. the last possibility is that the client is somehow munging the data it is sending. do you control the client code? if so, i'd start checking the client side code for bugs (and/or post it here).
also, i'm assuming that all of the variables included in your original code are thread local (you aren't sharing any of those buffers/streams/etc between multiple threads).

  • PowerMac won't fall asleep

My G4 will fall asleep when I go Apple>Sleep but not after a set amount of time (As per Energy Saver). There is no new hardware installed, and the sleep feature used to work find. When looking at the activity monitor before sleep there is only the normal processes going on that shouldn't affect the sleep. I have tried deleting the .plist files that control energy saver, but that didn't help either...

  • [DATA LOSS] I closed the Tab Groups and all my tabs dissapeared. How can I recover the tabs in Firefox 26? Would you please just delete this feature?

Thank-you in advance for reading all of this.
A slip of the mouse in trying to return to the left-most tab caused the tab groups feature to take over the window. I completely failed to comprehend what I was looking at and closed the thing by clicking the x because I damn sure didn't want what I was looking at. Undo close group? Of course not, I didn't want a group in the first place. Hey! My tabs are completely gone now! So in just a few steps all of which seemed innocent, I have lost all but ten of the tabs that were open, and those were only the most recent ten (and actually older tabs would have been more valueable than newer so insult on top of injury).
I don't think increasing the number of undoable tab closures is the answer. I think getting rid of the tab groups feature all together is the best way to go. I seem to have lost all the tabs I had open, irretrievably, and some of them had been open for WEEKS so they can't be reopened from history.
The tab groups feature is a data loss bug. Please remove it from the UX completely. If you have to figure out a way to grandfather people who actually have a tab group, fine but don't further vex me with it, please.
The reason this catastrophe has occurred is that your feature, was so discoverable that I activated it by mistake, and the UI after that had to be learned on the spot, yet was too complicated to learn. You really should withdraw it until you can figure out how to keep the UI for it from causing data loss such as I have experienced this morning.
Also, there may be other questions on this feature which are from a certain point of view the same as this one. It's hard for me to tell for sure. None of them had a true resolution so that's why I posted this one, also I'm seeking a specific fix, removal of the offending feature.
Why remove the feature? Because if I allow in my discussion the possibility of retaining it, it will stick around in its present and dangerous form until your team is done bikeshedding the new form it should take. Instead I want you to delete the feature and then require its champion to convince you that a new incarnation won't cause data loss before you allow it back in.
Fellow users, if you know of a way to recover all 50 lost tabs from an "undo close tab group incident", I would be grateful for that advice, but I would still believe the feature should be deleted. Some of the tabs have been retained for months so digging them out of the history is not practical.

I am not 100% certain but I am fairly sure development of this tab feature has ceased and it is likely to be deprecated. I am even less sure what the replacement will be.

I have not tried this and am not even using Windows at present but the tabs groups are stored as entries in the sessionstore.js files. Firefox has such a file plus sometimes numbered copies and a backup copy. Firefox will have re-writen these files but I suppose there is a posibility the Windows OS may have kept copies.

Find and backup any current sessionstore.js file. Consider also bookmark or otherwise recording anything you have open. Now find any previous versions and try putting them in Firefox's profile before restarting it.

  • How do I stop my external HD from falling asleep??? So, so Frustrating!!!!

    Hey Apple users
OK, I have a Seagate 500GB external HD formated with MAC OS Extended. This puppy is great, very dependable, only ONE issue...
After not using it for a few minutes, it falls asleep, and when it needs to be used, it takes an annoying 6 seconds to start up. Working with audio and having live samples that are stored on this HD, not having them playback for a few minutes (ext. HD then falls asleep), then playing back the entire project with these files needing immediate use, the software CRASHES because it can't access the data fast.
I have no room on my PowerBook HD for much at all. This also causes problems in iTunes, wanting to play a song after not touching iTunes for a few minutes (when not playing), iTunes freezes for some seconds until it can access the songs on the external HD.
SO SO ANNOYING, the internal HD takes like .01 seconds to access data. And this HD takes like a painful 6 seconds Ugh,
How can I keep my external HD awake ALL THE TIME, unless my entire Mac is asleep??
    Thanks!

Actually, this app. I mentioned above... HDriveAwake... is not a good idea,
it has many flaws, but it's decent software, just needs some improvements, main issue: consumes an incredible amount of RAM and Processing PWR while working.... (on my mac.. consumed 60+ %) & this is a bad thing if you use an EXTERNAL HD for stuff like audio/photo/video editing... I'm just going to get a Mac Pro G5 with like 4TB, I need it.... my bank account doesn't, but i do...

  • Wireless connection falls asleep..

So when the tv goes on standby (screensaver active, not been used for X hrs), then come back to use it, it often drops off the network. All the other wireless stuff (iBook, MBP, PCs, iPhones etc) are still running fine, and connected without probs.
So looking in the Network options, the signal strength has no bars at all, even tho the base station is on the other side of the wall. If I go to the Configure Wireless options and wait for the list to refresh, it often wakes up the wireless connection (altho sometimes doesn't work, so have to re-enter all the details), then the signal strength comes on full, and it soon restores back to normal.
Is there anything that can be done to stop the wireless card (?) falling asleep like this, and for it to just stay connected?

thanks for the suggestions. I've extended the DHCP lease and see how that goes, if that doesn't work, then I'll try the static IP.
I did have it connected via ethernet which was awesome n quick, and never a problem.. But we moved house so the new layout doesn't really allow easily for a lead to it, as much as I'd like to do that. The base station is literally 6ft on the other side of an internal wall, so no noise/distance probs..
Will see how this goes and report back in a few days!
    Cheers!

  • IS-U/CRM business partner created in SD results in data loss

    Dear experts,
I have been investigating a strange issue with a customer.
It concerns a IS-U/CRM architecture, where also the SD customers are exchanged.
    - All IS-U business partners are exchanged. Not all of these business partners have an SD customer (with same number) linked.
    - Some SD customers (some account groups) have no IS-U business partner linked
Now when in IS-U a business partner is extended for SD (via reference customer) a bdoc is sent to crm, containing next changes :
    - is_customer is set to X
    - Sd account group is filled
On the R/3-ISU side the customer is created in SD. But when processing the BDoc sent to CRM, crm answers also with a customer create (??) which results in the SD customer to be overwritten
--> this is clear because we have blocked the queues and after extending the BP in ISU the SD customer was created with userid of the employee (ERNAM), and after processing BDoc the SD customer creator (ERNAM) was changed to the RFC customer.
This also leads to the fact that data which was copied in from the ref.customer into the SD customer was overwritetn again by the CRM insert.
Has anybody ever been confronted with a similar problem or can give me some advice how to handle this. As we are already in production, and this leads to data loss, In don't need to say this is a very urgent issue for us.
Thank you very much, and of course points will be rewarded!!
    Regards,
    Michiel Strybol

    Hi Alin,
    Thank you for your reply.
I'll try to explain these in some more detail :
1/ We have a system landscape which includes ECC/IS-U & CRM
2/ We have different scenarios active:
    - We have a scenario where IS-U is not involved, meaning SD customers (=ECC customers in the Sales & Distribution Module (KNA1)) are replicated to CRM
    - IS-U business partners are replicated to CRM. But not all IS-U business partners have an SD customer record active. When billing needs to be done for such a customer, an SD customer is created for this ISU business partner (from within ISU), using a reference customer in SD. Apparently this also seems to trigger a SD customer create sent from CRM which causes our problem ...
There is no master system. Business partners can be created both in ISU and CRM, and should the be replicated in the other system
Hopefully this clarifies it for you.
Thank you very much in advance!!
    Michiel

  • PLEASE HELP! My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep on its own any more. Currently, my Energy saver is set so that the display falls asleep after 1 minute, and the computer itself, after 3 minutes. Even if I don't have any softwares running, or anything else, it doens't fall asleep. Please give me some suggestion about what to do about this! (or would I need to take it to a shop? ... )

Well, since the machine does properly sleep when the lid is closed, my guess would be that you have a software conflict and not a hardware problem. Since your are up to date, have repaired permissions, and can't remember anything else that may have changed, it could be difficult to track down the culprit.
One thing you can try, it takes a bit of work but will help show if software is the real problem. You could create a new user account, and don't install anything new in it. Log in as the new user, and see if sleep works there. Often as you use your main user profile, you accumulate software programs and utilities, and sometimes then can conflict with one another. If you create a fresh user account, often it will not have the same software conflict.
If the new account sleeps normally, then you can assume that you have a software conflict somewhere, and you should think through what you have installed. If the new user account has the same problem, my guess would be that something is out of whack with the OS, and you need to decide if a full system reinstall is worth it (that is a big decisions, don't just jump into it).
Regardless of the outcome, after you have used the second account for a test, you can simply delete it.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk Witout Data Loss

I think I goofed somewhere and am in need of some advice.
This Windows 8.1 home server had two identical 160GB drives that at one point were mirrored.  One of the drives failed but so I added a larger replacement hard drive (Disk 0 = 160GB, Disk 1 = 250GB) and was able to recover.  However now, not only
is the mirror broken, but the configuration is crazy:
Disk 0 contains 1 100MB System Reserved Parttion (System)
Disk 1 contains 1 120GB partition where the OS is installed (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump)
Since its much quicker to move 100MB vs 120GB, I was thinking I'd copy the 'System Reserved' partition on Disk 0 to Disk 1 using a third-party utility, but because both disks are Dynamic Disks, this isn't possible.
So at this point I can only think of two options:
Recreate the 'System Reserved' partition on Disk 1 (Is it as easy as running bootrec /scanos or /rebuildbcd or /fixmbr or /fixboot?) > Wipe Disk 0 > Confirm Windows 8.1 boots > Then create a new mirrored volume on Disk 0
Mirror Partition 1 (120GB) on Disk 1 (where Windows is installed) to the available space (149GB) on Disk 0 > Break the mirror > Wipe Disk 0 > Confirm Windows 8.1 boots (maybe I'll need to run bootrec with some switch here?) > Then create a new
    mirrored volume on Disk 1
    Thoughts?

    See:
How to Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk without Data Loss?
    Carey Frisch
    Thanks for the reply.
I've seen that post, among others, and they all require buying an application.  None of the product pages, like the one you linked indicate that a purchase is required.  It wasn't until I downloaded the aplications, (and I've tried several) that
I discovered a purchase was required.  Really disappointed they weren't upfront about that on the guides.
So maybe a different approach can be taken:
Disk 1 just contains the System Recovery partition - the rest of the disk is blank (not partitioned)
    Create a new partition
Copy the OS data from Disk 2 to Disk 1
Update the System Recovery and/or the Boot Configuration Data file to point to the OS that's now on Disk 1
    Once updated, reboot
The system should boot properly from Disk 1 and the OS should also be running from Disk 1
Convert Disk 2 to a basic disk
Once Disk 2 has been converted back to a basic disk, can I just do the opposite?
Create 2 partitions on Disk 2: one for System recovery and another for OS
Copy the System Recovery partition (partition on Disk 1) to partition 1 of Disk 2
Copy the OS partition (partition 2 on Disk 1) to partition 2 of Disk 2
Update the System Recovery and/or the Boot Configuration Data file to point to the OS that's now on Disk 2
Once updated, reboot, the system should boot properly from Disk 2 and the OS should also be running from Disk 2
Convert Disk 1 to a basic disk
This is bonkers, believe me, but I feel silly shelling out $40-$50 for a single feature of an application.  If I were going to use it regularly, or even periodically, I would do it.
I'm not very comfortable with bcdedit and bootrec so I need a little help with steps 4 in both sections.

  • Data loss!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think i might have lost all my photos!!! how can this be possible!!! All i did was rename the roll names in the pictures-iphoto folder...please i need urgent help!!! All my pictures are there!
    Can you i do something?

    marianabustillos
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
1.If all your pictures are there, then by definition, you have not suffered any loss of data.
    2. What you have done is break the cardinal rule of iPhoto: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
    3. Your choices now are simple:
Return things to the way they were or create and populate a new library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Some notes: You can rename Roll Folder but you MUST do it via the iPhoto Window. Select the Roll, then use the info pane (click on the 'i' lower left) the name and date fields are editable.
If you're trying to find pics: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Airdisk falling asleep and not waking up

what i thought might be a partitioning error/issue might be another thing altogether... let's start from the top. lots of random details follow, but something might be the kicker.
i have an older AEBS (non-dual-band, non-giga-bit, circa 2007) in another room (garage -- with all of the other panels, switches, etc.) that distributes a signal to the whole house -- specifically to two airport express base stations (delivering music, printer sharing, etc.). the AEBS is sending out a G/N signal (for iphones, network cameras, etc.) and one of the expresses is sending out an N-only (for my macbook).
the purpose of the AEBS is three-fold. (1) to provide wireless connectivity (2) to serve as a conduit to a backup airdsk for (a) general computer/home theater backups and (b) a consistent repository for a network (security) camera feed fed through "security spy" via a mac mini (home theater hub) which is hard-wired to the network via whole-house ethernet (belkin hub in the garage ties it all together). the camera itself is wireless (G-speed).
over the past few weeks, i've been getting very poor throughput on the wireless network -- speed bumps back up (from <1bps to >20mbps) when plugged into the ethernet network (as viewed through speakeasy's speedtest).
ok. the issue is that the new 2TB lacie harddrive is going to "sleep" and not waking up. it works fine for about 1/2 hour after hookup or "hard" wake-up (restart AEBS/drive).
previously (as few as 5 weeks ago, i had a smaller lacie drive (1TB) serving the same function flawlessly.
so... is this new airdisk issue due to:
-- the AEBS not liking the 2TB size?
-- the AEBS giving signs of failure (esp. with the network issues noted above)
-- is the new lacie drive either (a) a DOA-failure or (b) doing its job by falling asleep (if so, it'd be a new 1TB>>2TB feature)...
    -- user error
    -- something completely random...
thanks for any wisdom you can lend...

I have pretty much the same setup with the same model AEBS and I get the same problem with a 2TB Western Digital drive plugged in. I solved this problem a month ago by updating my system to Snow leopard and updating firmware to the base station and rebuilding pretty much the whole network. But it came back this weekend. Is driving me crazy!
(Side note: I also use that drive as a wireless Time Machine backup but can only get it to work reliably with my wife's Macbook not my own- which actually worked for a weekend but then decided that was enough.)
