Data lost, no .bak file

I have synchronized my addresses on the handheld with my pc, overwriting the handheld data by mistake. Now I was looking for a backup file (address.bak), but it doesn´t exist, only .dat files. I screened palm/DesktoP and palm/ *myhandheld*. How can I find the lost backup data?

With no .bak files there is no backup on the computer and since the device doesn't have a backup on itself either then you don't really have a backup there, so unfortunately I can probably say that your data is gone.
If you want to completly make sure that your data is gone then on your computer go to start/search and do a search for *.bak and see if it pulls up any files anywhere besides the regular location.

  • Dat and bak files for Palm Desktop 4.1.4

I have been using palm desktop 4.1.4.  as  a result of a virus I had to reinstall Windows and start over.  I put my .dat files in the right directory but palm desktop does not recognize them.  What do I do to get the desktop to recognize my dat files?  Also, what good are .bak files?  I have not found a way to use them in the desltop program.

You would re-install Palm DT 4.1.4, then rename the .dat file to .old in each folder Datebook, Calendar, Too do's, and Memos under your user name in C:\Program Files\Palm\ [your Palm user name (similar)] . Then put the .dat file you have saved from your original install folders in each new respective folder. Then you should be able to view your data under the user name you placed it under.

  • How to recover lost folders and files - Pls help, help...

Some days ago I lost all of my 15 GB folders and files that stored in my Macbook Pro hard drive called DATA.  I brought my Macbook pro to an experienced computer tecnicians who providing data recovery services. To his and my suprise, after checking, scanning it a few hours, he said their is no way to recover because he did not find any trails at all.  The computer still seems working properly - I have no problem with any applications.  There are few other folders in the DATA hard disk containing pictures, computer programs still remain.  These lost folders and files contain mainly documents (word, excel, power point, pdf etc) which I accumulated in my many years working  !!!!.  I did not make a back up since last September partly because I think Mac is very safe.
The computer with me all the time on that day and only my son used Power Point to make a simple presentation on that evening - he can not save it on the folders the he normally use - All the folders and files are gone.
I will appreciate it very much if any of you can tell me what would be the possible causes and more importanly how to recover the lost folders and files.  They are very very valuable to me.
Many thanks for your kind attention

First, did the data actually get deleted, or is it still there somewhere?  Try searching the drive for some of the documents, perhaps it's all just in another folder on that drive.
If it's truly gone, it's impossible for us to say what might have happened to make it unrecoverable.  Perhaps someone using the computer used Secure Empty Trash, or securely erased empty space on the hard drive.  Perhaps it was overwritten by other stuff before you noticed.  It's possible the hard drive is starting to fail, though this seems like an awfully specific problem for that to be the issue.
Or perhaps the tech you took the computer to didn't know what he was doing.  Why not try recovering what you can on your own?  See Recovering deleted files.
You should be aware that no computer is safe.  All computers rely on hardware that may fail and software that can have bugs.  You absolutely MUST maintain a good set of frequently-updated backups...  no fewer than two full backups of anything you don't want to lose.

On the File tab, click Open.
Double-click the name of the file that you have open in Excel.
Click Yes to reopen the Excel file.

  • How I get firefox tab history even sessionstore.bak file is not working after renamed?

My pc is restart due to power failer. I lost my important tabs. Session restore is not working. Then I renamed sessionrestore.bak file to sessionrestore.js. But still not working. I want get my all tab in sessionrestore.bak again. So please help me to do this.
If any JavaScript function to filter url from sessionrestore.bak is also ok.

Do you have clean backup copies of all the sessionstore files? Please do that first to avoid possibly having them deleted or overwritten.

I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

If you don't have them backed up somewhere, then there's little possibility of recovering them. There are some utilities that can in some cases recover an inadvertently-deleted photo, but I've found none that can recover photos or other data from an iPad that was erased as part of an iOS upgrade. You can do a web search for something like "iPhone photo recovery" and you'll find some utilities you can try.

I guess in the event of lost archive logs during db recovery, you have to open RESETLOGS and say goodbye to some of the data.

  • Restoring session from sessionstore.bak file

I'm trying to recover a session lost after a system crash,I have a '''sessionstore.bak''' file from the time of this crash (about 1.8Mb),and a '''sessionstore-1.js''' file which I assume is a leftover from some time ago and not relevant for this issue:copying this '''.bak''' file in the profile folder and renaming it to '''.js''' has not restored my session, indeed only one of the 10 windows I had open at that time is now restored-Firefox is set to show windows and tabs from the last time,so why this is not working?
After that crash, not only my profile was missing but the cache folders as well,it all got moved in a C:something directory, maybe I should recover the cache folder also to restore the session?
Is there any other reason why a sessionstore.bak file could not be used to successfully reopen the last session?

Thanks for your answer cor-el,I've just successfully restored this 100-ish tabs session from that '''sessionstore.bak''' file, what I've done is
    * copy '''sessionstore.bak''' in the profile folder, rename it to '''.js'''
    * replace the cache folders moved in the "recovered files" directory back in their original location
    * replace a couple of missing '''userchrome.css''' files with some others from a previous backup
    * delete that '''sessionstore-1.js''' as you suggested
Honestly now I have no clue about the deciding factor, but the pre-crash session is back exactly as it was,I wonder if the cache files are also essential to reopen such a large session (I also have BarTab installed, maybe this extension needs the cache files to work properly?)
Now about that sessionstore-##.js files you were pointing at,I assume the external programs accessing Firefox would be some security software,or do I have to search now for some out of control application ?

  • Why the cached data lost from Coherence?

    Yesterday,I sarted a storage-enabledcache server by running cache-server.cmd and started a storage-disabled cache console by running coherence.cmd.
Then I inputed the following commands to input some data into the Coherence caches:
    cache(cb)
    put a a
    put b b
    put c c
    put d d
    put e e
    Map (cb): list
    c = c
    e = e
    a = a
    d = d
b = bBut today, when I issue the list command from the Coherence command line, the output become "null".
    Why the data lost?

By running cache-server.cmd Coherence will be using the configuration file from the coherence.jar which will default to a cache with expiry of one hour. So if you had checked you cache after an hour or so you would have seen it was empty.
If you look at the coherence-cache-config.xml file inside the coherence jar you will see this mapping (which will apply to the cache you created with the name "cb"
        <cache-mapping>
          <cache-name>*</cache-name>
          <scheme-name>example-distributed</scheme-name>

          <flush-delay>1m</flush-delay>
          <cachestore-scheme></cachestore-scheme>
</local-scheme>which you can see has expiry set to 1 hour.

  • EXIF description data lost or damaged by PhotoShop Elements

    Hello,
When editing a photo in PhotoShop Elements, I have, depending on the case, one of the two following issues:
    - EXIF description is lost in the file saved by PhotoShop Elements
    - National characters (é, à, å, ö, ø and similar) are damaged (replaced by é, à , Ã¥, ö, and à respectively).
Feeedback from a different discussion thread says that in order not to loose EXIF description, it is mandatory to use Adobe Organizer for editing photos with PSE.
As we have named more than 100.000 photos using EXIF, I would like to get any advice from other users about how to solve this topic before starting to use extensively Adobe PSE.
We believe 30-50% of descriptions contain at least one national character.
    FYI
    - As we edit photos on two different hard disks and exchange them both ways, Adobe Organizer is not of much help. Only the description stored in the .jpeg file will be correctly synchronized between the disks, whereas information stored in organizer will not be correctly copied.
    - In parallell with PSE, we use an old software Microsoft Picture it for editing photos. This software does not recognize IPTC description, so unfortunately use of IPTC (handled correctly by PSE) is not a solution. By the way, anybody knows how to copy EXIF description to IPTC description for 100.000 photos?
    - We systematically copy the date + description of the photo into the file name (using XnView to rename files) in order to make this information visible in Windows Explorer. This method seems to be incompatible with the way organizer works (renaming is not recognized by organizer).
    - We have two computers, one on Windows XP and the other one on Windows Vista, so solution must be independent of Windows version.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas about how to efficiently store descriptions of photos and make them visible in Windows Explorer.

  • NTFS data lost when read on Mac OS X Mountain Lion

I am having external disk with NTFS and using Mac OS X Mountain Lion to work with the data inside the disk.
However I encountered problems when working with those data in Mac, somehow the data inside several directories on NTFS disk are lost.
The data lost was not because it was deleted, the data just lost directly when it was opened on the mac.
From the Mac's Finder, it is said that the size of the directories were zero bytes.
When I connected the disk to windows machine after that then it keep showing 0 byte. The data was lost permanently just after I opened it from Mac - the data was there previously before I openned it in Mac, but right now it's gone.
It's happened two times on different NTFS disks, it seems that Mac OS X deleted those files on NTFS disks.
Has anyone here encounterred the same problems like I did?
How to prevent it from deleting NTFS data again?
Is there any way how to recover those lost NTFS data?

  • Firefox crashed and when opened, it opened with just the first 25 tabs only. Also, I sessionrestore.js does not exist. Just sessionstore bak files.

Hello, when it crashed, I did not get the normal window to select tabs to restore. It just opened the first 25 or so tabs. I looked in other forums about the sessionrestore.js file and searched for it but it doesn't seem to exist. I did this:
copy and paste this: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ into your adress bar in windows explorer. It will bring you to your Firefox profile folder. Enter it, and search for a file called "sessionrestore.js", then right-click it and go to properties. The last tab in the 'properties' window is called "previous versions", click on it, and restore your file to a previous date saved on a System Restore storepoint. That's it! When you open Firefox again all your previous tabs will be there.
MY system restore point is a couple of weeks ago and a lot of tabs were created since then.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thank you for your message as well. That option in about:config, if it is set to false the oops page will not show up, if you would like this to set it to true for future recoveries if you would like.
This previous question has a few options to restore the 150 tabs, however I am not sure if it will work if the sessionrestore.js file is not there:
The option show tabs from last time may have a limit, but I am not sure, let me check if there is a default.
This was pretty handy as well when I was looking: [http://mzl.la/MCnd4M] That kb shows that it may just be as easy as renaming the .bak file to .js, however please save a copy of the file before renaming it so that it does not become corrupt. Because it crashed it cannot be sure that it is not corrupt.
The .bak file will only be from the last time firefox was open. Each time firefox is opened the file will be overwritten, so just to warn you the 150 tabs may not be there if you have closed it since it reopened after the crash.
    Hope this helps!

  • Removing .bak files after a certain time

I am new to automator but was wondering if the following can be done...
after saving a file in autocad it always creates a .bak file. now can automator for selected folders and after a time period of time after the .bak files has been crated, this automatically delete this files. and i mean only .bak files that are for instant more then a week old....
if so, can someone explain me a little how this can be achieved?
    thanks, john

How old are you? If 1998 is the year you were born, it's entirely possible your parents have subscribed to a 'smart limits' service, which will disable your data connection, text messaging, etc. during hours they choose.

  • Genius Bar lost a business file

Can you tell me why, if I travel backward to an earlier date in Time Machine prior to my trip to the Genius Bar on Thursday 3/27/15 and open the Account Edge NE folder, shouldn't my lost file be in there?  If the lost file was lost on 3/27/15, wouldn't it still exist prior to that date?  How could that file and ALL history of that file disappear.  Is there any way to recover that lost file somewhere hidden in my computer?  Or is my only hope to download another version of that application and rebuild all lost work.....Help!!!!

Did you continue to use the same backup after the repairs were done on the computer? This is really important.
If you did keep using the Time Machine backup that existed before whatever event took place that resulted in the loss of the file.. Time Machine itself can have found the file gone in your computer and deleted it from the entire backup.. that is how Time Machine works..
It is a current snapshot of the computer.. with some history recorded.. but once a file is gone.. it can at any future point.. delete the file that it now discovers is missing.
If the computer was rebuilt using the backup and the file is not there. It could also have never been backed up.. as we discussed in the last thread.. if you have never had to go looking for it and trusted to blind luck it was there.. in this case you lucked out.
What did apple do to your computer?? We never established that.
If they changed the hard disk.. get the old one back.. and it can be sent to data recovery specialist for file recovery.
I cannot help you without knowing precisely what they did.
