Data lost with 3.1 update

I dutifully downloaded 3.1 and had done a software update which updated iTunes to 9 on my MBP 2.5GHz/250GB-5400/4GB 667DDR2 RAM. When I synced my 32GB 3GS iPhone, ALL of my apps were deleted from the iPhone, then all 96 of them were reinstalled, including a bunch I had taken off the iPhone, and reinstalled the in ALPHABETICAL ORDER (who in the heck installs their apps alphabetically?)! Worse, I am "New user" on all my apps, all my lists are gone from my list apps, dates gone from countdown and calendar apps, word lists from dictionaries, maps I had downloaded from Topo Maps, scores for all my games are gone!....AGHHH! I was at work a few days ago, I went to look up a drug interaction on Epocrates, they had never heard of me, and requested that create a new account etc. Sorrrrryyyy I am just a litttttle too busy right now! So I looked it up the old-fashioned way. iTunes 9 does make it infinitely easier to rearrange the apps, so I worked that problem out pretty easily, thanks to the new iTunes.
Does anyone know what happened? Am I a victim of the "5th finger" phenomenon, where you inadvertently hit a key with your little finger and all of a sudden weird things start happening? Did I miss a really important alert box that warned me that my digital life was about to change? Right now American Heritage Dictionary 4th ED is downloading, which takes over an hour on my DSL, but I already have it. AND there is an alert that I have an app to update, and it's the AH Dictionary! But when I click on the icon, it says I purchased it but haven't downloaded it, go the the iTunes store and click on available downloads--but I HAVE downloaded it, and it is downloading again.
Fortunately, I have not suffered the fate of many as witnessed on the Apple Support Discussions or MacWorld forum, but I am curious if anyone else has had my experience? I am perfectly willing to admit that I may have missed an alert box, but I don't know if that is what happened, of if it was 5th finger episode, or what.

[ProjectServer 2013] Resource authorization data lost on PSI Resource Update

Hi,
as the title says I noticed that sometimes resource authorization data of a resource/user is lost in ProjectServer 2013 on a PSI resource update. Since it did not happen every time for every resource (user) I tried to investigate this issue in more detail.
I found out that it is related to a change in the resource availabilities. A resource/user loses its resource authorization data on a UpdateResources PSI call when the following criteria are fulfilled:
- "Earliest available" or "Latest available" date is set
- Resource/user has more than one ResourceAvailablities row
- Max units are changed for one of the rows
Since this is a quite complicated and specific issue here are some simple steps to reproduce it on a PWA instance:
1. Create new resource/user.
2. Enter any date in the "Earliest available" field and assign the user to some security groups.
3. Programmatically change the max. units of any ResourceAvailablityRow and update the resource via the UpdateResources PSI call.
4. Open the user in PWA. The security group associations will not be there any more.
I have successfully reproduced this issue on two different PWA instances on two different servers.
Did i miss anything obvious or is this a well known issue?
If yes are there any workarounds?
Did anybody else run into this issue?

I created a Fiddler trace (see link at the end of the post) but i could not find anything suspicious in there.
If it helps here is the code that i use to reproduce the issue:

To elaborate on my answer above, I don't understand your concern. If you have just 1 yr left on your double your data 4 GB plan, then there was no "loophole" to keep your unlimited data when you renewed your contract.
Anyone was able to keep unlimited data when upgrading with a subsidized phone up until late June of 2012. A year ago would put your upgrade at April of 2012 and there were no restrictions on keeping unlimited data at that time.
You are obviously not relaying the "whole" story, but that is not unusual for someone who would like to get out of a contract without paying the ETF.
You either did not have unlimited data to begin with, or you chose to go with the "double your data 4 GB" plan on your own. There was no reason you needed to give up your unlimited data, if you actually had it, when you upgraded.
There must be some other factors involved, such as wanting to save a few bucks by purchasing from a retailer other than Verizon and you are now regretting your decision.

On October 30th, 2013 Western Digital informed registered customers of affected products via E-mail regarding reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9). Our investigation to date has found that for a small percentage of customers that have the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and/or WD SmartWare software applications installed on their Mac, there can be cases of a repartition and reformat of their Direct Attached Storage (DAS) devices without customer acknowledgement which can result in data loss.
WD has been tracking this issue closely through our WD Forum and through our Technical Support hotline and the occurrence rate of this event has been very low. A specific set of conditions and timing sequences between the OS and the WD software utilities has to occur to cause this issue. Should this event occur, the data on the product can likely be recovered with a third party software utility if the customer stops using the device immediately after the OS X Mavericks (10.9) upgrade. WD will be issuing updated versions of these software applications that resolve this issue.
WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading until we provide an update to the applications. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. I agree. After installing Mavericks I was troubleshooting and reinstalling drivers for days. Many Apps did not work anymore, although the updates slowly arrive. As total divergence of the old Apple philosophy, I had to use endless library cleaning terminal commands to get a new Canon network printer running again. Canon provided the procedures after updating from OS X10.6 to 10.7 already. Now it seems, that the first time I used the Super Drive (CD-DVD Drive) trying to burn an audio CD with baffling error messages (Drive already used..). After this, the RAID1 status of the two MyBook archives changed to JBOD. The changes of OS X10.8 to 10.9 I find unnecessary (iBooks could be an App, Maps we have already the same on other channels). Some changes are even a step back (calendar graphics), the so much more user friendly Office suite iWorks is free, but degraded an of limited use!MadOverlord wrote:

App Sound lost with 2.1 update

iPhone 3G, 16 GB.
I have 4 apps with sound (Tap Tap, Labyrinth, Cowabunga, Cube Runner). All worked before the 2.1 update but now only Cowabunga has any sound. (using speaker; I don't use headphones for games).
Some others have reported sound problems but I have not yet found a correlation with 2.1.
There does not seem to be any setting to adjust sound for apps, only for phone and texting. Those sounds are mostly turned on.
I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but others who did try that for their sound problems did not find that it helped.
Is there some non-obvious setting I can change?

I'm having the same problem, only just got my iphone, videos, itunes, ringtones all work fine, but no sound through the speakers for games and apps.
It comes through the headphones ok.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this please?

How to recover data lost with Boot Camp

I was removing my boot camp partition when in the middle of it boot camp crashed. I went back into boot camp to check if the option to uninstall windows was still there, but it wasn't. I went to about this mac etc. and the storage didn't show my windows 7 partition but the data from the windows 7 partition was gone and My macintosh HD was missing the storage. Any Ideas on how to fix it? Sorry if my question doesn't make sense.

I guess everyone has their own idea of what is easy. A backup, reformat, restore to me is an utter PITA. Once you have free space, that free space is still not usable by Mac OS. You have to expand the Mac OS volume to use it. Sometimes this can fail because of the weird way Apple has chosen to sequence the partitions, with the Recovery HD Partition located after the Mac OS partition, making Recovery HD in between Mac OS and Free space. Apple's diskutil resizevolume command will move Recovery HD around as part of a resize. The basic command is:
diskutil resizevolume /dev/disk0s2 limits
That will show minimum, current and maximum resize limits. If current doesn't equal maximum, then free space has not been incorporated into the Mac OS volume. You can sometimes fix this with:
diskutil resizevolume /dev/disk0s2 R
That will expand the Mac OS volume to maximum size. If it fails then it's worth reconstructing the HFS+ catalog with:
fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2
That command requires the file system be unmounted so you'll need to boot off another volume - Recovery HD is fine.
All of these are commands leverage features which the GUI doesn't offer access to.

Remember last folder location lost with Mac Lion updates

Since Lion or Mountain Lion, we have had an annoying problem where the last folder location is not remembered in Illustrator. For example when updating links on multiple files, would like for the folder location to return to the last one used, but this would go to some folder 3 levels higher/

How to get back software I lost with Belle update?

I had the following games installed on my N8 when there was this "Summer Game Gifts" campaign:
- Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. HD+
- Angry Birds Seasons
- The Settlers
- Angry Birds Rio
- Monopoly Classic HD
- Worms HD
- GT Racing HD+
- Tetris HD
- Guitar Rock Tour 2 HD
They are all, besides of almost every other program/app I had installed, lost with the Belle update. Only Tetris is still on my mobile, maybe I had installed it accidentally on C: and not like all the other games on E:
All the games don't appear in my Nokia Store history ... but one game "Brain+" appears in my history but costs now 90c, I downloaded it for free like two months ago.
Why isn't the update making a backup of ALL applications if also applications on E: are deleted during the update process?
And my prime question: How can I get back all this games?

So far, the Belle update seems to be the most problematic update yet and given the time it's taken them to release the update since they announced it back in August 2011, you'd have thought it would have been a lot better than this.

if you have no back up in icloud or itunes the best you can do is sync with your computer and get back what you can from there

I was updating ipod touch to new iOS5 and it told me that all data would be lost with update and to put it oon computer, but update not there. How do i update with out this happening?

I am looking for some help with updating to iOS5, i downloaded to computer to avoid losing data on ipod touch but update was not there. I've done three times and same result. If I have all music on usb drive will I be able to reupload it after update, or is there another way to do it by transferring my music from ipod touch to computer and the re-installing in itunes. As all of the msuic came from your computer in the first place it should still be there. Is it not?
EVERYTHING on your ipod should also be on your computer and should be included in your regular backup copy of your computer.
Make sure that everything is on your computer. You can transfer itunes purchases from the ipod. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases.
When everything is on your computer, then it can be synced back to the ipod after updating.

If you have a backup on iCloud or iTunes you would not have lost all your data, the update went fine on my phone and my wifes and many others. On forums you dont see the millions of users saying it went well, just the few with issues. If you had no backup thats not Apples fault, thats yours. The same will happen whatever platform you go to if you dont back your data up.

If the backup and restore takes place properly, you shouldn't have any issue as millions of people have done an update from iOS 4.

Hopefully it isn't too late for this but: before performing an update it is really best if you close all apps (double click the home button, click and hold on one of the apps that appears at the bottom of the phone until the red minus sign appears and then tap the minus sign until all apps are closed) and then turn the phone off by holding the standby button until the slider saying "slide to power off" appears and slide it to turn the phone off. Then turn the phone back on and hook it up to your computer to sync and perform the upgrade. This also helps if you do this before performing syncs too. I had problems with an iPod previously where it would fail to backup before sync most times, but have never had a problem with updates or syncs since I started performing this procedure. Unfortunately, your pre-update backup may have failed and the data in your apps might be gone, but you could try to restore your phone. If I remember correctly how to do this, you connect it to your computer and check for updates. It should say you're up to date, but have an option to restore the phone. If it does, I'd try that. It may also have a "restore from backup" option you could try.

No, do not re-import your images. I assume you can see the thumbnails in the library module, just cannot access the full images, right? If this is the case there should be an exclamation mark in the top right corner of every one of your pictures and you only have to tell LR where the images are now.
Click the exclamation mark of one of the images and a dialog window should pop-up, telling you that LR cannot find the file, but with an option to locate it. Press "Locate" and navigate to the folder on your new HD where the file is. If in the new external HD you kept the same folder structure that you had on the internal disk, LR will be able to find all your images and re-link them to the database without further intervention.
