Data Merge Field is out of position

I am hoping someone can help me.  I have everything set to default but for some reason my Data Merge preview when turned on selects default as OFF the page (red boxes) and centered.
Can someone help me figure out how to get them back to the page?
Thanks.
CJ

OK here are my settings along with the template.  It is a label that is setup 6 up on a sheet.
I did copy everything to a new template/file.

  • Extracting an image data merge field using only an indesign file and not document.dataMergeProperties.dataMergeFields

    Hi,
I have kind of a weird requirement but I hope you guys can help out.
I need to extract all the custom fields used in an indesign file without referencing the dataMergeProperties of a document. Sorry if this is a weird request it is just what I've been told (our system needs to not crash when people upload a variety of in design documents to generate high resolution jpg preview documents).
I can already get all the text custom fields by looking for "<<" and ">>" in the text frames of a document but I'm having a really hard time finding the image custom fields.
I tried looking at the rectangles for a given page but that didn't seem to help (but maybe i'm missing some there). I also tried looking at the graphics and images collection of a document but this seemed to return only graphics that are hard coded on the in design document and not the custom image fields.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Uggg....
Found the answer after I realized I was looking at the wrong SDK (5.0 instead of 6.0)
I'm using the doc.hyperlinkPageItemSources property to get these images. It also looks like you can get the image data merge fields from DataMergeImagePlaceholder (but rememeber I couldn't access this).

  • How to edit a data merge field in a 'header'?

    Hi All,
I'm trying to figure out how to edit the green bar so I can replace <<Expertise>>-<<Expertise>> with a different field from my excel data source. I want to replace it with the Category field in the Data Merge box but I cannot seem to edit that green bar.
    Help! Thanks in advance,
    Mark

Actually you were right, it was being inherited by the master page. And the 'live' page we were working on was unable to delete it. When I went to the master page, I deleted the << >> and it deleted it from the live page.
Now when I put in the <<category>> on the master page, it shows on the live page. For some reason my data rows are not displaying multiple records to a page now (shows only 1 per page so I've got 117 pages!), but ill try to figure out what happened.
    Thanks!!

  • Linking Data Merge Field with JavaScript for PDF link

    Hello everyone,
I am using the data merge in InDesign to generate a PDF with data from a data source file. The data merge will populate a Product Number field. I want to write a script that will modify the Product Number field to contain a JavaScript Link in the resulting PDF.
For example, the product number [1234-567] will launch: app.launchURL("plsddr://localhost/1234-567|*", true); when the Product Number link is clicked on in the resulting PDF.
Can anyone provide an example on how this could be done, or point me in the right direction? If there is a better way to go about this, please let me know.
    Thanks!

What findText returns is a list of Text, but that's totally interchangeable with Word. It appears InDesign can switch at will between Characters, Words, Lines, Paragraphs, and Stories.
Text can consist of one single SpecialCharacter (a column break, or a hard return, or any of the SpecialCharacters enumeration), or of a standard JavaScript "String" object -- a simple Unicode string.
The property that 'holds' the text is "contents" -- so, adding all of this up, to 'get' the text that has been found, you'd typically use
    next = list.pop();
    alert ("The text contents of this one is '"+next.contents+"'");
and you can build further on that -- using it as a HyperlinkDestination URL, or something like that. The Text item -- 'next' -- still points to the 'live' text it was found at, so be careful not to modify it. Doing something like
    next.contents = 'hey what happened';
will change the actual text in your document. But it's also useful to add, for example, a hyperlink to the actual position this text was found on.
(A tip regarding changes: if you are to change your document, the original items findText pointed to will be messed up after you changed the first one! To prevent that, work backwards from the last item found to the first. findText(true) will reverse the order of found items, from last to first -- see the JS Help on that.)
    As for
(Also, how do you print the contents of a Word object?)
that depends on what you mean with 'print' . To a printer?

  • Data merge field as hyperlinks?

    Hello,
I'm working on a DPS project based on a csv file with some 50 records. Some of the fields contain hyperlinks, totalling to several hundreds.
Has anybody any idea of how to place a placeholder for a datamerge field in the 'hyperlink' or button-'go to URL' boxes to avoid placing them by hand after merging the document?
    Thanks!

  • Data Merge: Field Label control

    Hello -
I am having a good time with DataMerge, except for one thing.
I am creating a document with multiple records per page.
That's fine - I understand how to do this.
However, I would like to have the field labels only appear ONCE per page - ie, at the extreme left
Right now, the field labels appear repeatedly, for each record.
Is there a way to put them in a margin, or another layer or something????
If this cannot be done by InDesign's merge, do you know of any alternative way to do this, or if InData can do it?
    Thank you -
    Marion

    Very very clever -
and easy, although it would be great if I could place them on the master before the merge in a separate layer, and disable that layer prior to merging, and enable it after merge.
    Thank you Peter.

  • Data merged text into boxes assigned for InCopy doesn't display merged text, only the placeholder

    I think I found a bug.
I created an InDesign document for use in InCopy for a client. The end goal is to data merge a whole array of documents for the client, who can open them in InCopy and update the text.
    I designed the layout
I created the assignments for InCopy (which stories and images the InCopy user could edit)
I then set up a data merge to pre-populate content like contact details, portrait photos etc
When I merged the final document, two things happened.
The images didn't respond to the Content Placement Options (fill proportionally), they all just got placed at 100% size ratio (they did centre though)
The data merge fields didn't populate the placeholders with the relevant text. All of the fields just came up as their placeholders <<Phone>> <<Fax>> etc
As soon as I deleted the assignments and re-merged, the image settings were being applied and the fields were populating the documents.
I'm using the latest version on CC, 10.0.0.70.
Anyone else had this issue? It's very specific but it is a bug.

A couple of other users have reported similar problems, and it appears to be a bug when you go from preview to merge. If you undo out of preview, or skip it entirely, before hitting themerge button, does it work?

  • How to build conditional text from a data merge

    Hi there
I'm hoping this is not a long shot but I do have a rather large ask (I think).
I cannot figure out how to create conditions on values.
We have two areas that require conditional text. See these areas on the attached image.
Features offered - up to 6.  These are identified by defining each feature with a letter, eg 'n' stands for tent site and 'L' stands for seasonal work,  and
Room type offered - four colour codes with this. These range from "not made up", "made up", "ensuite/madeup" and "ensuite".
The tab delimited file contains numerous columns for each room type - single, double, twin, share and dorm rooms that offer the 4 room type categories - see point 2 above.
I cannot figure out how to clarify the conditions I require for the conditional text.
Do I start with making 4 conditions for each room type colour and so-on for the rest of the room types ie single not madeup, single madeup, single madeup ensuite and single ensuite?
And if so, how do I create these using the correct conditional code?   Does GREP have anything to do with this and do I need to use its metacharacters like \?
Can someone perhaps start me off?
The same goes for the features.  The features are displayed in the spreadsheet per column with either a 'yes' or a 'no' displayed.
I hope I have provided enough information to get some assistance.
    Thanks so much.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't see why you need conditional text. I can see that you may want to color each property in each category differently, to stand out for quick visual communication.
If each feature (attribute) of each property or venue is represented in one spreadsheet row (record,) you can use data merge to create the whole entry for each property. For example, a property may offer two types of rooms - single and double, and the single may be available as "not made up" only, while the double is available as "ensuite/madeup" and "ensuite."
In the spreadsheet, in the row for the Acme Inn property, which only offers single not-made-up and single ensuite/madeup rooms, and for the Ajax Hotel property which offers single made-up, single ensuite/madeup, and single ensuite rooms, the cells that contain the data for the merge fields would look like this:
    Property ID
    single not-made-up
    single made-up
    single ensuite/madeup
    single ensuite
    Acme Inn
    $50
    empty cell
    $75
    empty cell
    Ajax Hotel
    empty cell
    $65
    $75
    $85
On the data-merge layout, each room type's label would be followed by all four data-merge field placeholders, with colors applied, so the single would look like:
    Sgle: <<single not-made-up>> (red) <<made-up>> (yellow) <<ensuite/madeup>> (green) <<ensuite>> (blue)
NOTE: The colors are applied with named character styles to the data-merge layout in InDesign.
[EDIT] BAH! I applied colors to the text when composing this post, but they were removed when I posted. [/EDIT]
When you set up the merge with Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields enabled (checked) so the empty cells are ignored, the result resembles this:
For the Acme Inn:      Sgl: $50 (red) $75 (green) $85 (blue)
For the Ajax Hotel:    Sgl: $65 (yellow) $75 (green) $85 (blue)
The separator character between the prices in your example is a special issue. It could be solved in the spreadsheet by creating calculated columns between the price columns, with "IF" formulas that test for values or empty cells and display the separator or nothing. If you choose this method, you'd need to insert fields between the placeholder fields, to hold the calculated fields' contents.
Another approach here would be to follow the data-merge process with a GREP script that inserts separators where they're needed.
Search Google for terms like "InDesign data-merge tutorial," "InDesign data-merge remove blank lines," "InDesign multiple records per page," and similar phrases without quotes.
    HTH

  • CS3 Data Merge - Missing Fileds in Data Merge Dialog Box

    Indesign CS3 5.0.1, XP SP2
    Hi all,
I have a document that I have applied a Data Merge to.
I use a table in Excel 2003 with contact details, name, address etc...
When I open the Automation> Data Merge Dialog box I no longer see the list off all the fields as in Excel.
However, I can preview and create the mail merged document and place items using tags e.g <<Field 1>>.
When I try to remove the Data Source InDesign always crashes But I can relink to a new Data Source, this does not solve the problem.
Thank-you all for your time and help!
    Alu

    >>Did you perform the merge? Once you do, ID creates a new document. Which document are you looking at?
I am using the original document, not the product of the mail merge.
    >>I assume it's a CSV file. ID can't use and Excel file for data merge.
    Correct.
I have tried saving the document as an .inx file and then re-opening, but I still cannot view the .csv data merge fields from the Automation> Data Merge dialog box.
Any Ideas? - thx for the response Bob & K

  • How can I utilize text variable in my book which only uses data merge on the first chapter?

Hey ladies and gents, I'm trying to automate a process here and running into trouble. I have the first chapter of a book with several data merge fields (legal documents etc), and want the later chapters to pick up from what I have already merged via text variables or SOMETHING. From what I've tried, the options available to me are limited and buggy.
Using the running header with character styles almost worked, but it removes all visual tracking in text around it (I assume this is a bug) and it only works for the first/last instance of the style. I need something that will fill in all instances.
Here is an example of what I'm doing. In the ch1 document of my book I data merge the Name, Age and Occupation of a person. In chapter two I want to have a variable that takes the name that was merged in ch1. Any ideas? Doesn't seem possible!

I need some solution that references live text, specifically different fields that have been data merged. This solution needs to work between documents, so your cross-reference suggestion was in the right direction. If I data merge 'Plan Name' from a CSV file into my first document and mark it with something (character style, paragraph style, text anchor etc), I want to have places in my other documents that pull that exact text from the first.
If document 1 says 'the plan is XXXX', document 2 will copy that name, i.e. 'According to plan XXXX'. Whatever solution this is it's what I'm looking for.

  • Data Merge Image Size

If I create an image frame and place a data merge field in it, when I do the merge, it makes the image the size of the frame (i.e. either enlarged or shrunk to fit). I would like the image to come in at 100% so that I can use the "fit frame to image" command instead of having to first resize the image back to 100%. I've tried messing with the frame fitting options, but nothing seems to be of any use. If I'm missing something, I hope someone can fill me in.
In the event that there isn't a way, is this something that can be scripted (after the merge, run the script to select all image frames, set the image size to 100% and then scale the frame to the image).

In my testing, selecting preserve image and frame size and center in frame keptthe frame at the size drawn int the template and centered the image.  Unselecting the center image put the image inthe upper left corner, and it either left the frame alone if it was larger than the image, or expanded it (even off the page) if the image was too large. Most images seem to have been imported at 100%. I still can't explain why a handful are coming in at 50 or 25%, but there was a bug discovered a year or so ago that caused image scaling for particular pixel dimensions for one user (might have been a combination of dimensions and resolution) which might explain it. I'm merging into a 20 x 24 page filling nearly the entire page withthe frame, and there seems to be space to place these files at 100% so it's a puzzle.
I haven't seen ay images scaled up...

  • Is there a way of generating Indesign new QR code with Data merge?

The QR Code Content area will not accept a data merge field. Is there any way of using these for generating variable data QR code?

    No, it is not possible.

  • Data merge colour change

Is there a way to change the text in a single data merge field to two separate colours?
ie a script of some sort?
    thanks in advance

You could run a GREP find/change after the merge to get rid of any extras. This will find any duplicate comma-space sets and replace them with one comma followed by one space.

  • Possible to include merge fields with exported PDF?

    Hello,
I have only a simple question - is it possible to include data merge fields when exporting to pdf?
Using InDesign CS2, we are doing a direct mailing campaign and having the printing outsourced. It is a 4 page document with only page 1 personalised - sending to over 1,500 recipients.
The printer says he doesn't want our indesign file, he just wants us to create the 4 page indesign document, prepare the data merge fields, export to pdf and then send it to him.
He says he'll then import it back into his own indesign one he gets this pdf and do the merge himself with the excel .csv file we provide.
Does this sound about right? If so, how can I ensure the pdf is correct to send over?
I have managed to get the data merge fields to be clickable like links in the exported PDF by including 'hyperlinks' and 'interactive elements' when exporting - but is this correct?
Thank you in advance for all your help...

The printer is right that he can use your pdf.  It is ok to place a pdf into InDesign. It might fit into his workflows and experience to do this work so.
I would recommend to use a PDF/X4 with bleed as the printer requieres to place into an INDD file. But you should communicate with your printer how he wants it.

  • ID.CS3: Make Data Merge more useful?

Data merge is a useful function of Indesign but its scriptability is limited. I've searched this forum and found some scripts that run a pre-linked ID document. I'm trying to script the linking of fields with known text strings.
Looking at the dictionary I see that the only thing that has read/write is properties.
My attempt to see what properties I can read/write seems to only point to its own reference.
Is this part of data merge (assignin fields to text strings) just not scriptable? thanx, sam

OK, here is my latest attempt to take what Olav's javascript uses and apply it to Applescript. I'm stuck on applying the myNamePlaceholder as notedby  by myNamePlaceholder:
It yields no placeholder. But I believe I've done it right because I've followed the record generated when I manually make a placeholder and get the data merge text placeholders of document 1. What am I missing?
    thanx, sam
set myTextFile to ("path:to:working:date.txt") as alias --I'm using a text file that works manually.

set {myNamePlaceholder} to end of data merge text placeholders
return properties of data merge text placeholders
--yields {} if I have no placeholders manually made. If I have manually made a placeholder, it yields only the manually made placeholder. What am I missing?
