Data migration problems using Firewire

Hi everybody, this is my first post.
I have just bought an Intel-based iMac 20" 2.4 GHz running Leopard.
I tried to transfer data from an old (year 2000) iMac DV 450 MHz running OS 9.0.4, connecting the two machines by Firewire ports and using the Migration Assistant.
Everything was OK, in the sense that the Firewire icon with HD of the old Mac was correctly displayed, but was completely empty (no file/folder in it).
At the same time the Migration Assistant seemed to be blocked on "waiting for disks appearing", with no possibility to continue.
Any advice on how to solve this problem ? Have I to allow more time for the files to appear, or something wrong happened ?
Thanks a lot for you help.

Hello Mongoi and welcome to  Discussions.
The new Intel's cannot connect with some of the older iMacs via Firewire. I had the same problem, so instead I connected the two via File Sharing (Connect to Server using the Intel to connect to my old G4) and moved things across manually.

I have gotten half way through data migration from my MacBook to my new MacBook Pro. It has taken an overwhelming length of time to get this far but the process has not progressed for 24 hours. How do I get out of this process without damaging my computers or the data?

  • Arabic data migration problem

I'm using SQL developer to migrate from SQL server 2005 database (whose encoding is Arabic) to and Oracle database (whose encoding is UTF16). The arabic data are migrated successfully but appear as ?????? marks. Is there a way to migrate the data successfully?
    thx all

We are using 3 data base for the appllication developed in java.
One of our common table containing all the country location ( post code / zip ) details. Problem is that this details are insert to the data base using SQL*PUS or Sql command line available while installing oracle 10g / 10g express data base.
But when we run sql script with special characters like МП Летище Бургас ( Bulgarien )
    INSERT INTO beoatlas2.OPTION(LANGUAGE,VERSION,TYPE,module,CODE,description,bemerkung,description2,description3) VALUES('DE','SCPRLD','122','ALL','BG001002','МП Летище Бургас','','','ext');
    or Β΄ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗΣ ( Griechenland - greece )
    INSERT INTO beoatlas2.OPTION(LANGUAGE,VERSION,TYPE,module,CODE,description,bemerkung,description2,description3) VALUES('DE','SCPRLD','122','ALL','GR002002',N'Β΄ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗΣ','','','ext');
it returns as ?????? marks . i set NLS_LANG to AL32UTF8 using command set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8
then also it displaying as ???????
I need to insert these details properly in Linux and windows Os using sql command line .
Any sujections are appreciated . Its very urgent .

  • Data migration problems...

    Hi,
I am trying to migrate the database from SQL Server environment to Oracle 10g database.
I am using SQL developer for the same.
On converting the captured model to oracle model , i am getting lots of migration errors and that is mostly in the stored procedures .
The general error is something like this :
Stored Procedure 'usp_CONTMGTDWRCreateDWR' has language id of 'MSTSQL' so will not output for generation     .
And when i copy the MS-SQl code in the scratch editor and press the translate button , i am predominantly getting these two errors :
    1) cannot translate null
2)cannot translate > Unknown object : unxepected end of tree : Line 0 Column 0
Can anyone tell me what do these errors mean and how can i go about correcting them??
    Thanks in advance.
    Shishir.

  • Strange legacy data migration problem to SAP CProjects

    Dear all,
I am new to CProjects and currently working on migrating legacy data to CProjects through XML. I am facing some strange problems when migrating project data with multiple phases. If the project already exists in Cprojects, the XML import transaction hangs indefinitely and a timeout exception is thrown. While on the other hand, if I upload a new project (with same set of phases), it is readily imported without any problems.
       Kindly help!
      Thank you all!

    Hi Vivek,
If the project already exists, the system creates a simulation from the imported data. You then need to move the simulation to your operational project by performing a reconcilliation. You can't simply overwrite an operational project via an import.
I have included some links below from SAP help which may help (cProjects 3.1).

  • Data Migration-LSMW using IDoc Method

    Hi Friends,
I have contract relevant information in the form of a excel spreadsheet/tab delimited flat file.
This transactional data has information such as Header Data, Item Data and Sub Item data (BOM explosion).
I need to migrate this data from the flat file to the CRM application using the IDoc Method of LSMW.
/When I used the Batch Input Recording method, the item data was not captured during recording./
Kindly send me relevant information to [email protected]
    Thanks in Anticipation

    Hello Sven,
thanks for your comment. Unfortunatelly those both transactions do not exitst because I work on SAP CRM 7.0 instead of SAP ECC. I also looked for similar transactions in the table but didn't find anything.

  • Migration Assistant using firewire not working between new iMac and G5. Ah!

I unpacked my new iMac 21.5' last nite and spent three painful hours trying to use Migration Assistant to tranfer files from my old iMac G5, which is using OS X 10.4.11.
I follow all of the instructions ver batim: connect the 400/800 firewire between the old and the new iMacs, start migration assistant on the new iMac, reboot the old iMac holding down the 'T' key until the firewire symbol pops up on the screen. At that point, the new iMac sits there with the message 'waiting for the other iMac to restart.' It never seems to recognize the old iMac. I tried rebooting, reconnecting the cable, etc. No luck.
I also tried using the ethernet option with no luck. The computers find each other but after entering the 'code' twice, the old mac gets stuck 'searching for other computers on the network.'
Any advice? I'd really like to use my new iMac!!!!

May not help but give this a try on the G5:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
I would also first turn off both computers then connect the FW cable. If both computers have a FW800 port then you can use a standard FW800 cable. Boot the G5 into TDM. After the TDM screen appears boot the new computer normally.

  • SAP Best Practices for Data Migration :repositories only on MS SQL Server ?

    Hi,
I'm implementing the "SAP Best Practices for Data Migration" (see https://websmp109.sap-ag.de/bp-datamigration).
As part of the installation you have to install MS SQL Server Express Edition. The installation guide contains detailed steps to do this. All repositories for Data Services should be running on SQL Server, according to the installation guide.
The customer I'm working for now does not want to use SQL Server, but DB2, as company standard.
So I use DB2 for the local and profiler repositories.
I notice however that the web application http://localhost:8080/MigrationServices does not support DB2.The only database type you can select in the configuration area is MS SQL Server.
Is this a limitation, a by design ?

    Hans,
The current release of SAP Best Practices for Data Migration, v1.32, supports only MS SQL Server.  The intent when developing the DM content was to quickly set up a temporary, standardized data migration environment, using tools that are available to everyone.  SQL Server Express was chosen to host the repositories, because it is easy to set up and can be downloaded for free.  Sone users have successfully deployed the content on Oracle XE, but as you have found, the MigrationServices web application works only with SQL Server.
The next release, including the web app, will support SQL Server and Oracle, but not DB2.

  • Can data be migrated between Macbooks using firewire to thunderbolt?

Can data be transferred using 'migration assistant' via a firewire to thunderbolt link between a Macbook Pro (W80190Z2AGV) and Macbook Pro Retina (C02JC08BF51R)? Both have OSX 10.8.4. Or is there a better/faster alternative to transfer data?

The only thing faster would be Gigabit Ethernet, using the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor. But there's not much in it (800 vs 1000). You'd need a Cat6 cable as well.

  • I had a data migration done from old iMac to new iMac, how do I use that file to find my old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

I recently had a data migration from old iMac to new iMac 11.2
How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

  • Migration freezes at 3.2 gig, using firewire target drive or USB HD

I fell down the stairs while carrying my Powerbook. Screen bashed, case bent. Bought new Macbook Pro and tried to use firewire to migrate files, system always hangs when I get to about 3.2 gig. This is while using migration manager, or target drive and drag/drop. Then removed HD from old laptop and connected with USB external drive enclosure. Same exact problem. What gives? I can copy smaller folders, and I will do that if there is not a fix for this. Any ideas?
BTW, it does not matter what folder I copy, it always freezes at about 3.3 gig and locks up the finder. Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thank you everybody.
I just tried to copy from that HD via USB to another Mac, a 2 year old Imac with OS 10 whatever (non Intel). The really weird thing is that it also locked up at 3.24 gb; exacty the same as with the other computer. And exactly the same as if I copied another folder that was over 3.24 gig. So, 3.24 gig is magic number here.
I am almost sure that the 3.24 gig was the same spot where the trnasfer would lock when I was using target mode and firewire while this drive was still in the old broken Powerbook.
    Any thoughts?
BTW, I am not a computer expert, just a Mac user for work and home applications.
    Thanks again!

  • HT204350 The instructions for "Migrating using FireWire or ThunderBolt" are WRONG

The instructions for "Migrating using FireWire or ThunderBolt" in this article are wrong for a transfer from a Mountain Lion Mac to a Mavericks Mac.  You should not put the source Mac in target disk mode.  Rather, you should start up Migration Assistant on the source Mac and choose "To another Mac"

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Will Reinstallation and Data migration solve the Character Set Problem????

    Hi to all,
We are having a problem with Arabic Data in the Oracle 9i Database, when we are adding any data using SQL * Plus and a asp.net web based application, the data is converting to ????? (Question Marks), when the database was installed on the Server with Windows 2003 OS, it was not having Arabic Support, after installation of oracle 9i it was realised, later we installed the language packs for Arabic on the Server.
So this was the reason the arabic support is not there in the database, we changed the NLS_LANG parameter of the Server's Registry entry, but this did'nt make any effect on the database, the only change we observed was that now we were able to type arabic data in the SQL * Plus on the Server machine. But after saving the record when we retrieve the data is coming as ?????? , so we tried to insert the data using a client which is having the Arabic Support and we inserted a row using the SQL * Plus with arabic data in the insert statement, after inserting when we retrieve the data. The data was visible without any problem.
So What is the problem is the database storing the arabic data correctly or not ???, we think there is problem with the Server's Oracle Configuartion, is there any other way we can get the server working with arabic data or a Reinstall of the Oracle Data will solve the Problem.
Or we can do something on the server machine so that we dont need the Resinstallation.
If we have to Reinstall the Server what are the best practices and steps we should follow so that we have a seamless migration between the old and the new oracle database.
    Thanks and Regards

With NLS_LANG on the client and NLS_CHARACTERSET in the database equal AR8MSWIN1256, you should be able to support Arabic data without problems. If you have problems, it usually means a configuration issue on the client, for example, NLS_LANG not set for the right Oracle Home, or lack of Arabic support in a particular tool.
You need to add Arabic message files to the database Oracle Home (i.e. Arabic should be selected in the Product Languages dialog box in the Installer) only if you care about the language of error messages returned from the database to clients. If you do not display these ORA-xxxx error messages to end users, it should be OK to leave them in English. Also, if you want Arabic error messages, month names, and weekday names, you should change AMERICAN to ARABIC in NLS_LANG.
