Data Migration Vs restore using backup

I just bought the new imac, and i want an exact copy of my macbook pro into my imac. including documents, pictures, softwars etc. etc.
what's the best option here?
Data Migration or restore using a backup copy?
Do they both do an idential job?
Please help me
Cheers

It is never a good idea to clone the drive of one model for another to use. It is usually safe to do this for two computers that are exactly the same year and model because they have the same components but otherwise don't risk it - especially when one of the computers involved is a newly shippled model which often has a special version of the OS due to its use of brand new technology.

  • Cannot restore using backup

I am trying to restore my iPhone using the most recent backup file. When the iPhone is docked, I right click on the icon in iTunes and choose "Restore from backup".
The restore commences and gets to 99% completion, and then I get the error:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "" failed. The device is connected."
My iPhone is obviously connected... PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to a high-speed USB2 port on the PC, using the cable that came with it.
If you haven't already, uninstall/reinstall the latest version of iTunes.
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 will walk you through uninstalling iTunes.
You can download the latest version of iTunes from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • Want to backup ipad on computer, but itunes is only allowing me to "set up as a new iPad" or "restore" using backups from other apple devices connected to my itunes account. Help?

    ?

See if this user-tip helps : Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive
The page was written specifically for phones, but it applies to iPads as well
Some of the steps on that page have changed slightly (it was written for a previous version of iTunes) :
5, is now File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
6, 'Reset Warnings' at the bottom of the phone's Summary tab in iTunes
    7, File > Devices > Back Up
8, File > Devices > Restore from Backup (or Restore Backup button on the Summary tab)

  • Clean install and restore using Backup 3.1

I have an older G4 thats got some stability issues and I'm considering backing up the user folders and doing a clean install just to give the machine a good cleansing.
I'm not familiar with Apple's Backup program but I'm hopeful that i can backup the users to a second hard drive...erase and install Tiger on the primary HD then restore the users.
Are their any problems or pitfalls with this plan. Will the OS eagerly accept the restored users?
    Thanks

The AEBS(n) does not officially support a partitioned USB drive, which could explain the inconsistency in mounting. See this article for the supported disk formats:

  • SAP Data Migration Framework

Dear All, I read from TechEd that SAP data migration framework involves using Business Objects data services. SAP has provided pre-built Jobs with iDOC as target.
All is fine but I came to know that we can use Data services as staging area and modify etc our data in Data services beforw loading into SAP ECC system.
I would like to kow more about using Data services as staging area. Does that mean that when we run jobs then data is stored in iDOC(XML file) on DS or it means we can run DS in demo mode where we don't load data but keep it within memory of DS. This is different from profiling and storing execution/DQ statistics. This is storing real time data in DS and then modify/analyze and then load in SAP ECC.
Can someone explain if we can run DS in demo mode without loading data?
    Thanks,

  • IPhone not restoring from backup

When I try to restore my not jailbroken iphone 4 from a backup on itunes, it completes about 70% of it and then stops.  The progress bar stops moving, and I have left it overnight and when I come back it hasn't progressed at all.  I have tried it multiple times from multiple backups done on different dates.  What should I do?

Sorry, there is no way to preserve your data. The restore from backup process is all or nothing.

  • Data Migration Contact person

    Hi All,
I'm uploading Contact Person data from Seibel system to SAP CRM. This is going to be Single time data upload. Please suggest me which one is the best approach to do this like BAPI or IDOC or any other. If anybody already worked on related object then please give me mapping documents that will be very great help for me.
    Many Thanks in Advance.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Anil.

    Hi Anil,
I am not sure about the best approach, but I have worked on data migration of contacts using Report program.
I had created a report program that would accept an excel file as input that woudl contain the contact person deatils. I then craeted a contact using various function modules.
Please let me know if you need further information about this approach.

  • HT201250 When using the installation disc to start a Mac Pro that won't start; will the 'restore from backup' option erase all the data previously stored?

As long as the backup on your external drive is fine, it will restore your Mac to exactly how it was on the date of that particular backup, all data included. I have used it before and have retained all data from the date of the backup.

  • I had a data migration done from old iMac to new iMac, how do I use that file to find my old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

I recently had a data migration from old iMac to new iMac 11.2
How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?

  • Is there a way to clean up data without restore and backup?

I noticed recently that too much data is being silently stored on my iPad possibly be apps and caches.
Isn't iOS supposed to clean up data as it needs free storage?
most recently, according to usage in settings > general, I had 1.8 GB of free space. I wanted to install an app that is 2GB in size. iOS told me there was not enough free space. I could not find what used so much data, and frankly this time the list of apps in settings > general > usage proved to be pointless. Adding the numbers together of how much space the apps were using up was nowhere near enough to leave me with only 1.8 GB of free space.
I did a backup, then restored my iPad. After that, I restored the backup with all apps and data I had before. Now I have 7.2 GB free space. 5.4 GB of temporary and junk files, with no way of erasing them, is quite frustrating.
Anyone knows a solution or shall I just restore my iPad pretty much every 2-3 weeks? (Yes, the last 5 or 6 restores I have performed were solely for freeing up storage space that mysteriously keep being filled up.)
Additionally, how do I find out which apps use up so much space when settings > general > usage doesn't tell me anything? Only how much space the app itself needs and how much permanent (user generated) data is being stored. Such as pictures, save game files, and so on, but nothing about cache sizes temporary data.
PS: if the above was asked and answered before, please accept my apologies and could you link me the topic it has been resolved in?

Hi! And thanks for your reply!
It sounds sensible. Since the last restore which was just over a day at the time of me writing this reply, there is over 1GB of data unaccounted for. Note that I have not installed new apps, nor DLCs within games. The two I have been using heavily are Netflix and Youtube, both of which should automatically erase temporary data. Or so they claim.
However, there was a period when I had my iPad on charger overnight. When I woke up, just out of curiosity I checked the usage statistics and I found my free space was about 200 MB less than when I checked immediately before goong to bed. So the iPad was not used at all and somehow I lost 200MB.
I did try a software for Windows called Phone Clean, but that didn't help. Before the restore, I ran a deep scan, and it only cleaned up about 500MB of data even though there was nearly 5GB unaccounted for. I performed the restore, and that was when I thought this is beyond me, and posted this topic.
I have also noticed that when I watch a movie with the Videos app by streaming from iTunes instead of downloading, after watching it, the storage will not get freed up. The movie is still there (as confirmed by trying to actually download another that was larger than the current free space, then the previous movie file was indeed deleted by iOS automatically) but it does not show up in usage > videos. According to iOS the Videos.app has no data within.
I'll try a full reset soon and see how it goes. Obviously it will take some time to test it, but I'll let you know of any results. Luckily, I don't have many apps that don't use iCloud storage so their data should be there despite dropping the backup, and installing them clean should be easy using iTunes on a PC.
If that doesn't help, I go one step further and download the apps one by one.
    Well, there is plan.
To be honest, it would really be helpful if we could see individual app containers as that way we can easily find out which app is being naughty.
Any way, thanks for the tip! Give me a couple of days and I'll let you know how it went.

I use an Iphone 4 which had to be replaced recently. However when i did a backup it was on the new IOS version 7, but now that my phone was replaced and i am back on the old IOS version 6 i how do i restore my backup??
When i try to restore my Back up using Itunes this is the message i get - "Unable to restore backup as the software is old - Please setup as a new device and then try to restore your backup" - Please advise. If i do so are there any chances of loosing my data. At this point in time i would be happy if i could just retreive my contacts list. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nope - you cannot restore a backup from a newer iOS version on to a device running an older iOS version.  The reverse works, but in your case to use your backup, you must update to iOS 7.0.3 - no other option if you want to use that backup.

  • Used iTunes to restore from backup and the Apple ID that shows up is a very old one

I have an iPhone 4s. I recently lost all of my contacts for some mysterious reason. I personally think it's a conspiracy by Apple to force me to upgrade to a new phone. Anyway, I hooked my phone up to my computer (Windows 7) and from iTunes I went to Devices, Restore from Backup. I know that within the last few weeks that I backed it up onto  iTunes but I cannot figure out from the newest iTunes how to find it. So I restored the backup but it backed up from November of 2012 (I am only assuming this because the most recent pictures that are in phone are from that date). It did restore my contacts from 2012 but there are no recent contacts in there plus I lost all my photos from November 2012 on. Which is no big deal. My problem is that the Apple ID that is showing up is from a very old account. The e-mail address is no longer even valid.I tried to delete iCloud from my phone so that I could put it back on with my new Apple ID but I cannot remember the password of my old id. When I go to reset my password for my old id and the security questions come up the first thing it asks for is my date of birth. When I put my date of birth in it says:
The authentication information provided does not match our records. Please verify your personal information and try again.
I know that I did not enter the wrong birth date when I first set up that account. So now I am stuck because I cannot get any further without that date of birth. I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP. PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
PS-Not sure if this matters but I also upgraded to iOS 8 directly before I did the Restore From Backup.

    Hello risenhauer,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To reset your Apple ID password without knowing your security questions or have access to the email account, you will need to contact Apple Account Security in your country.  Links to contact can be found in the article below.

  • I tried to install a new hard drive using Snow Leopard to back up with Time Machine. When I installed the new HD I installed Leopard (10.5) on it and tried to use time machine to restore the backup I had made using 10.6. Kernel panic screen occurred.

I backed up my system using 10.6 Snow Leopard's Time Machine to an external hard drive. I did this because I purchased a new internal hard drive to upgrade my 2007 White Macbook from 80GB to 320GB. When I installed the new hard drive, I installed 10.4 (Tiger) and then 10.5 (Leopard) and once Leopard was in I tried to use Time Machine to restore my backup from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and received a kernal panic screen directly after the bootup.
The screen had code asking for 10.6, so does this mean that the computer is searching for Snow Leopard? If so, how can I do this? Will a bootable drive with Snow Leopard on it be able to solve the issue or will I somehow need to find a way to wipe out this new hard drive?
    -Steve

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
