Data on time capsule seems to be erased after installing it as a server (?)

In have always used my Time Capsule as an external hard disk drive, connected via a LAN cable. I saved all my photo's and music on it and personal data. This is of course very valuable for me.
After purchasing a system to wirelessly play MP3 music, via the system setting I selected file sharing. However, the files on the Time Capsule were still not accessable. Via the airport Utility I selected file sharing.
Still the files could not be selected wireless on my music system.
After that I accessed the Time Capsule via Finder > Go > Connect to server. I filled in the IP address of the Time Capsule and I could see two partitions of the Time Capsule now. I had never intentionally installed partitions on it, but now 2 partitions are available:
1. Eteam1
2. EteamTimeCapsule
I think EteamTimeCapsule was the root directory all my files were saved in. Now it seems to be empty (except for a .sparcebundle file of the TimeMachine backup.)
I am a bit desparate, as I fear all my data is lost. Who has a solution for this? Would it be possible to recover any data?
Thank you very much for any help.
Everard.

The TC is designed to backup several laptops in a household. (yes its original intent was laptops since it is basically a wireless router with a hard disk inside) It is for incremental backups so each computer may use 2x or 3x the normal disk capacity. That means 2TB can be quickly consumed. The backup software needs a fair amount of free space on the drive to work. Let me assure you plenty of people fill up their drives. The backup is continually taking snapshots of the drive and saving all the files you are working on.. the idea is to go back historically to locate an earlier version if something goes wrong.
Now as to storing files.
Forgive me using a standard answer here.. this is being asked all the time.
Store files on the TC.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
Major issues.
1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there are no controls.
4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Would a NASS or a simple external hdd be betten then? I think it would have the same disadvantages right?
A true NAS has the following..
1. Raid for data integrity.
2. Backup for saving data in the event of total failure.
3. Disk access to replace a faulty disk.
4. Power supply access to replace a faulty power supply.
5. Controls.. disk controls, file store controls, access controls.
TC has none of those. It is a sealed unit.. designed for one simple function.. TM backup of laptops.
For Desktop computers an external drive.. even USB2 is faster, cheaper and much more reliable. With new computers and now USB3 that is far more the case.
External hard disk is always the first choice to overcome internal disks that are too small. To the point where I recommend people do not use laptops to do desktop work eg movie editing if it requires more disk space than is available.. or get the internal disk replaced for a larger one.
Or pay for thunderbolt.. but actually thunderbolt is still so expensive it is cheaper to replace the internal drive.
I do not expect everyone will agree.. But I do repair TC.. and I have seen people in your situation enough times to know.. storing files on the TC is a bad idea.

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • To back up data in Time capsule to external hard drive...

I have Time Capsule 500gb connected with Seagate external USB hard drive. My iMac and Time Capsule are connected wirelessly.
I've stored my music data in Time Capsule, and I want to back up this data to Seagate hard drive. First I turned on Time Machine feature, but this function didn't seem to support data in Time Capsule. Here are my question.
    1. What should I do to back up from TC to Seagate using Time Machine feature?
    2. If I could not use Time Machine, what method is the most convenient to back up?
    Please help me.

I have just checked two programs called Carbon Copy Cloner and Superduper! but these don't support NAS drive back-up. Anyone know alternative device or programs to back up in my case? Please help me.

  • HT4522 I would like to delete some time capsule files that I erased from my mac. Please and thanks

Please help me deleting some files that are in my time capsule which I have erased from my computer
    thank you

Since you deleted the files on your Mac, Time Machine will eventually delete them automatically from the Time Capsule, so you really need do nothing.
If you really do want to delete the files right now, open Time Machine, wait for it to load and use the timeline on the right side of the window to go back to a date when the files were still on your Mac.
Use the Finder like interface to navigate to the specific file that you want to delete and click on it to highlight it
Click the gear icon at the top of Time Machine window and click "Delete all backups of  xxxxxxxx"
Do the same for other files that you want to delete.
Click Cancel at the lower left of the window to return to your normal desktop

  • How Do I Delete backup data from Time Capsule if have 2 computers on 1 TC?

I have been backing up 2 computers (one desktop/one laptop) to a 1TB Time Capsule. I have now added an external hard drive for the desktop computer and would like to delete that computer's backups from Time Capsule to free up space for the laptop computer. How do I delete the desktop computer's backup data from Time Capsule without disturbing the laptop back ups? Do I drag the desktop computer's backups.backupdb and sparsebundle to trash and empty?
    Thanks.

Thanks though I am still a bit confused as I had read NOT to delete via Finder, but via Disk Utility (erase). Does it make any difference?
You're probably referring to the advice never to change, move, or delete anything inside your backups via the Finder, as that can corrupt them.
A number of folks have tried to delete a single backup that way, and caused all sorts of troubles.
Deleting the entire sparse bundle is ok.

  • Time Capsule hangs in initial backup after having deleted all data.

    Hi,
I'm having a big problem trying to set up my time capsule after deleting all data on it again.
In the beginning the problem was that I have used the time capsule as a file server and a backup volume. I guess it was the main problem was that the disk was full and time machine had no more place to backup any longer.
So I always got an error that the time machine had a problem to backup.
I decided to delete all data on time capsule and start from the beginning.
After deleting all data and trying to start from zero, Time Machine is trying to initiate the backup.
But nothing more happens. It seems to hang up while initiating. I tried to delete the disc several times but the problem is still occuring.
Maybe you had the same difficulties and found a solution?
Thanks a lot for your help!

same here although I get to "finishing Backup" and then mine hangs and it can be hard to shut down. I discovered the only way I could get it to stop once was to launch Disk Utility and eject the sparsebundle listed there. I have no backups at all.I will call Apple on Monday and see if they have anything floating around there that might fix us. I will report back-If you make any progress please let us know here! We will get this thing working I am sure of it!

  • Accessing data in time capsule

Can I access data from time capsule wirelessly using a smart tv or blu ray player? If not, can I access it with ethernet connection?

    No and No.
There are rare exceptions but mostly SMART TV isn't that smart.. it needs DLNA in the network device to find files.. TC of course supports no media extensions at all.. nothing.. zippo.. el zero or as you say.. null.
You need a player that can access raw files.. eg WD live TV can do it.. because it is a real Media Player. Not a streamer.

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • My mac can't find the volume" Data" on Time Capsule. Also Ican't find with the disk utility program the hard disk in the Time Capule; so I can't format the disk again. What can I do?

My Mac can't find the volume " Data" on Time Capsule, Also I can't find with the disk-utility program the hard disk in the Time Capusule.
So I can't format the disk in the Time Capsule
Deconnevt and then connecting the power tp the Time Capsule gives also no solution.
    What can I do?
    Joe

I listed the commands.. that is how you manually mount the disk.. follow exactly the commands I gave you.
In finder use top menu, go, connect to server.
    Type in the following.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIpaddress (obviously you replace with the actual name or the actual IP address).
    If that fails..
    try
    SMB://TCname
    Here is the screenshot.
tardis4 being the name of my TC.
It should then ask you for your credentials.
And it should remember them in the keychain and be able to then get TM to connect.

  • Can i access my data on time capsule from some other network

can i access my data on time capsule from some other network that is my data at home from office over internet

There is plenty of info out there if you google..
Here is a summary I just put into another thread.
Remote access has been added back into iCloud that was in MobileMe..
Read the info on setting it up from cloud service.. BTMM.
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
If you want to do it without the cloud service, you have one major issue.. the public IP for WAN..
The internal IP of the TC.. which will default to 10.0.1.1 btw.. is irrelevant. It is the IP of the WAN which you use to access the TC over the internet. And here you have a problem.. the TC does not include dyndns service. So unless you have a static IP address from your ISP, this will cause you grief.
(If it is offered by your ISP.. get a static IP.. that eliminates all the issues.. and is far superior. Even dyndns service has issues if your public IP rotates too often. It is generally an extra cost item and requires a business account but some ISP offer it cheap or even free.. I joined an ISP that offered static ip for free because it gives me the ability to remote access my network without all the hassles you will see below.)
There are ways around it.. setting up your own domain for instance.
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/
But it is easier to simply use a different router.. almost all of them have dyndns service available.. place the TC behind the router in bridge and forward port 548 TCP to it.
This is a bit old but still relevant.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Note .. there is no ftp, http, ssh (there is actually but it isn't accessible), or any other service to allow connection other than AFP.. so you must use a Mac in remote location to access the TC.
The setup for the two methods is slightly different in the TC.. in the first instance, you need to turn on WAN access via disk sharing page in the manual setup.
In the second case you do not need this.
Remember security and put strong passwords on the disk. There are still security questions about this.
If security is important.. there is a third and better (IMO) method and that is vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router as TC also missed out on that.. establish a vpn with the main router and that will allow you access to your network.. you will also then be able to use SMB remotely not just AFP.
Also if this office is a large company they should be running a firewall, which would block your access to home. You should check your IT admin people for what is allowed.. generally the only acceptable method is vpn otherwise you can drag viruses and trojans right into the network without the firewall catching them.

  • Can't backup after erasing Data on Time Capsule

    Good Day!
Just recently purchased and installed my Time Capsule.
I then took some time to figure out how to configure everything and had to change some password settings.
I decided to erase Data from the Disk to see how it functionned. I imagined that having just a few weeks of backups, it would not be a long process.
I selected the 35 passes and stopped it after a few days as it seemed to go on for ever.
I selected the first quick erase option. Once completed, I also chose the second option of erasing the free spaces.
It should have then cleaned the hard drive of the Time Capsule to my understanding.
Today I tried using TimeMachine to restart the backup process.
An error message popped up stating that it could not create a sparsebundle on the Time Capsule.
What should I do to repair this?
    Should I use Disk Utilities?
    Regards,
    Jean-Paul

I found my answer. I selected the wrong disk from the selection.
It is saving at this precise moment.
