What use has it to store photos in those three different places? Does it not eat up more space that way?
When burning a photo-CD, the three versions of the photos come up on the Cd, can I not avoid that, and only have the version of the photos I chose on the Iphoto panel?

A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So you can see there is no actual duplication, and each version of the photo has a role to play.
If you want to burn an CD without all the versions then select your photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export, and export the files to a folder o the desktop. Then burn the disc with the finder.

Should I have Copies in 3 Folders - Data, Original & Modified?

I have a Powerbook G4 that is running out of Hard Disk space & I am looking for opportunities to find some space. I have not touched ANY of the files in the iPhotot Library, as I know that is a no-no, but it looks like I have copies of all pictures in 2 files: Original & Data. & then, for pictures I have modified, there are also copies of those in Modified. I understand the Original & Modified folders. But what about the Data folder? Should it be there? Do I need it?
I do have a back-up hard drive with copies of everything, but I still need to access my photos when I am not in the office, so simply moving them all to my back-up isn't a great option. I'm also wondering if I delete some photos from my Laptop after I back them up, when I do my next back-up will the photos I deleted from my laptop also be deleted off of my back-up copy?
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful.....I will get a new Mac Laptop in the Spring, but just trying to stretch my harddrive capacity a bit longer....

Yes, everything is correct. The "Data" folder contains thumbnails rather than full-sized files.
First, back up by dragging (copying) the library folder AS AN ENTITY to the backup location. Do NOT attempt to back up portions.
Second, do all your deletions by accessing the library from INSIDE iPhoto. The backup will not be impacted.
Third, you might want to break your library into several DVD-sized libraries (this might take some educated guesses). I did it by duplicating my library several times and then carefully deleting appropriate photos from each one. Back them all up the normal way and also burn each one onto DVD and carry a pack of DVDs with you when you travel. With multiple libraries, you need to change the name of each library folder to something that makes sense to you (that's the ONE safe change that you can make to the library). iPhoto will always remember the most recent library that it accessed. Whenever you wish to change to a different library, hold down the Option/Alt key while starting iPhoto and follow directions.

What is the difference between the 3 folders Data, Original & Modified.

When viewing my photos in iphoto if I go to pictures > iphoto library I see for folders. Data, ipod photo cache, Originals & Modified. I want to know why there is a folder labeled Data and what is its use . Why is it there?

All of the files and folders are necessary for iPhoto to work.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

Why can't I save pictures with Dates in name such as 2010/05/20 subject.jpg?

I am trying out Photoshop CS5 before I buy and found out I can no longer save pictures by dates to keep them in order.It has worked in every photoshop I have owned before. If you use a photo name like 2010/05/20 subject.jpg It gives you (could not save as "2010:05:20 subject.jpg" invalid file name)

I don't have a copy of CS5, so cannot confirm, but...
Apple did a very strange thing when it changed from System 9 to OS X (a long time ago!). The separator character in System 9 paths was ":", while the separator character in Unix is "/". This means that you cannot have a ":" in a file name in System 9, and you cannot have a "/" in a file name for Unix, including all versions of Mac OS. There is a work-around that I don't really understand that allows Mac to put a ":" in a file name on OS X that is then displayed as a "/". You can test this by creating a file with "/" in it and then doing a "ls" in Terminal. A file named "This/file/has/slashes.rtf" in Finder becomes "This:file:has:slashes.rtf" in Terminal.
In any event, this work-around is a recipe for disaster (a file has a different name in the Finder than it when looked at by Unix command-line tools?--careful!).
I always use dashes in my dates.
I suspect that CS5 is using different Apple code than CS4, resulting in this issue.

File date modified on imported pictures

I have imported a large number of pictures into iPhoto '08 from an external hard disk. Then I have checked the content of the "Originals" folder into the iPhoto Library. Some pictures have their file date changed to the date of the importation. I am not talking about the EXIF data but the files themselves.
All the pictures stored on my external hard disk have their file date set to the date of the shot. This is normal because I have transferred them from the camera to the disk then I have not modified them.
Do you know why iPhoto has changed the date of some of my pictures? Everything is fine for 99% of them, it happened only on the last pictures but I have not changed the way I transfer them...
I know that this is not a big deal because I can see the original date into iPhoto but I like to see it directly from the Finder when looking at file details.

This month my newsletter is 41mb and it drops to 11mb, 25% of original. I have re-sized all pictures, deleted pages separately, have gotten the file size down to 16mb and it drops to 7mb, 45% of original.
I have gone back and saved Feb and March and it saves to 10% of original, as it did before, and I use the same mechanism to save now.
I have gone to Acrobat Pro and optimized down to 8.8mb, but the quality is not acceptable.
What other variable is there that I haven't discovered?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

Then you need to ask a PC forum how to export the photos there to include the Metadata (specifically the EXIF data)
If there is valid EXIF data iPhoto uses it (the EXIF data is originally added to the photo by the digital camera) and if there is no EXIF data then the only inofrmaiton IPhoto have available is the file metadata and that is what is used
You can correct the dates in iPhoto using the batch change data/time command

RESOLVED!!! I logged on to my Straight Talk online account, and did a Tech Chat. They immediately gave me a direct phone number and a Reference PIN number and asked me to contact their iPhone specialty support. I called (of course the gentleman's accent was very difficult for me to understand, but managed with asking continually for clarity). He walked me through several tests, setting changes and had me get on my wifi to obtain the latest APN settings. None of his efforts worked ad it was obviously NOT my Straight Talk iPhone 5, 64GB CDMA (no SIM) - it was something with their setting on their end on my account. I was placed on hold a few times and he would come back on to have me try to get on Safari and even Google... after the 3rd on-hold, he returned and asked me to try to use my data again without the wifi turned on and BINGO it worked... I still do not have my wifi turned on and I'm still receiving texts from YESTERDAY too while I was away from wifi service. IF you come across this issue - please call Straight Talk and/or log on to your Straight Talk online account and talk to an online customer service representative and get their direct line phone number for iPhone support and have your Reference PIN number available. I say the problem is probably noted, and probably will be resolved. Not that i can speak for Apple. I find the "problems" of wallpaper to be pretty minor compared to the advantages of iOS 7. The fun of wallpaper has always been pretty insignificant here.

sorry, this may be a dumb question, but what's the difference between Data, Original and Modified folders? when I do a search for a specific folder, i find that I will find all the folders and there looks like duplicates but they are filed in Data, Original and sometimes additionally under Modified.

Please remember that Finder searches do not really understand your iPhoto Library. If you use iPhoto the correct way to search for photos is via the iPhoto Window.

Why can't I save pictures off the Internet after downloading ios 6?

Ever since I installed ios 6 I have not been able to save pictures off the Internet. When I 'Save photo', it does not save anywhere. Unless it now saves to a new spot I am unaware of? It's not in my 'Photos' section. Anyone have any ideas what this is about? Or if its going to be fixed?

I think my problem is harder to solve than that. What you say is what I first tried to do. Since the sync with iTunes was still working, I could still have some pictures in the photos app, and each time I was syncing new pics from my computer ( PC btw ) I had a prompt that said sth like "xx elements have not be synced, check what on iTunes on the PC" but there was nothing on iTunes, and every pic I synced was here in the photos app. I thought there was a directory problem, or ghost pic files issues, so I made a backup of the iPad from iTunes and I disabled the autosync with iTunes. when I got it back, I directly tried to save a pic from safari and mail (even before syncing anything) and it was still not working.
I really can't figure out why is this occurring, and I haven't tried anything else for now. I think I will show this up in an apple store cause it's kinda hard to explain.
PS: sorry for the mistakes, I know this is annoying and makes my weird stuff hard to understand, but English is not my first language. (but I will keep on, the English community is still the best!)

Why every GOOP "Get Data to Modify" is set as reentrant?

I found out that in every GOOP programs like e.g. "report generation" the vi "Get Data to Modify" is set as reentrant.
Can somebody explain to me why it is so?

Hi Pawel,
The reason for the "Get Data Modify.vi" to be reentrant is that if you for example have two parallel executing VI which both tries to access and lock the attributes of the same object, one will successfully lock the attributes and continue execution. The other VI will be forced to wait until the attributes are unlock again. The Get Data To Modify for this will the will "get stucked" and not finishing executing until the attributes are unlocked or the timeout occurs (compare with a LabVIEW semaphore).
Further, if you have another VI executing in parallel to the situation described above (totally three parallel activities) and this code tries to lock and modify another object of the same class. If the Get Data To Modify VI wasn't reentre
nt, this VI should be forced to wait until the Get Data To Modify finished executing for the first situation, actuall the second object is forced to wait on the first objects attributes to be unlocked! This is not the case if the Get Data To Modify is reentrant, the second objects attributes could then be locked immediatly and the execution continues as expected.

Welcome to the Apple community.
Once you have restored your new phone from the backup of your old phone and ensured that everything is working correctly, you should first turn off "find my phone" on the old phone and then erase it, before you get rid of it.

In firefox 4 I don't have the option to save picture as when right clicking on a picture in facebook. my friends say they do. why can't I ?

I have windows xp and just started using firefox I am very pleased with firefox but in ie I always pick up pictures from family and friends on facebook. in ie all I do is right click on the picture and choose save picture as but in firefox I don't have that option when I right click on a photo. My friends that use firefox say they do. what should I do to fix this? also when I upgraded to firefox 4 I no longer get a list of friends in farmville and other games in order to send gifts. I have to use ie to get pictures and if I want to give something in games.
