Data Pump data compression

We are seriously looking to begin using data pump and discovered via a metalink bulletin that data pump does not support named pipes or os compression utilities (Doc ID: Note:276521.1). Does anyone know a work around for this or have experience using data pump with very large databases and managing the size of the dmp file.

With oracle datapump, you can set the maximum size of your dumpfile and in this way also dumping on more directories.
I found the following on AskTom website. Ik looks like the things you want are possible with Oracle10g Release 2:
Fortunately, Oracle Database 10g Release 2 makes it easier to create and partially compress DMP files than the old tools ever did. EXPDP itself will now compress all metadata written to the dump file and IMPDP will decompress it automatically—no more messing around at the operating system level. And Oracle Database 10g Release 2 gives Oracle Database on Windows the ability to partially compress DMP files on the fly for the first time (named pipes are a feature of UNIX/Linux).

  • Importing data pump data into a new db or tablespace

    As part of my development db logical backup strategy, I export data in the database to a dump file using expdp (I export data_only).
    The main reason I export data to a file is to restore data after some human error. Suppose a developer updates every field in a table and sets them all to null (this happened at the beginning of the year), we can just import the data into a new db/tablespace, extract the data of interest and delete the database/tablespace.
    Is it possible to create a second database (or preferable just a new tablespace) to load the data in the dump file?
    PS. The version of Oracle we have doesn't have the FLASHBACK TABLE or FLASHBACK DATABASE feature, and we wouldn't want to stop the test database just to use the RECOVER command.
    Thanks in advance

    You could create a schema called RESTORE, and then use the FROMUSER / TOUSER syntax in the impdp command, leaving your existing stuff intact.
    You can also replace data in existing entire schemas using the FROMUSER=hr TOUSER=hr with TABLE_EXISTS_ACTION=TRUNCATE with CONTENT=DATA_ONLY.

  • Exporting whole database (10GB) using Data Pump export utility

    Hi,
    I have a requirement that we have to export the whole database (10GB) using Data Pump export utility because it is not possible to send the 10GB dump in a CD/DVD to the system vendor of our application (to analyze few issues we have).
    Now when i checked online full export is available but not able to understand how it works, as we never used this data pump utility, we use normal export method. Also, will data pump reduce the size of the dump file so it can fit in a DVD or can we use Parallel Full DB export utility to split the files and include them in a DVD, is it possible.
    Please correct me if i am wrong and kindly help.
    Thanks for your help in advance.

    You need to create a directory object.
    sqlplus user/password
    create directory foo as '/path_here';
    grant all on directory foo to public;
    exit;
    then run you expdp command.
    Data Pump can compress the dumpfile if you are on 11.1 and have the appropriate options. The reason for saying filesize is to limit the size of the dumpfile. If you have 10G and are not compressing and the total dumpfiles are 10G, then by specifying 600MB, you will just have 10G/600MB = 17 dumpfiles that are 600MB. You will have to send them 17 cds. (probably a few more if dumpfiles don't get filled up 100% due to parallel.
    Data Pump dumpfiles are written by the server, not the client, so the dumpfiles don't get created in the directory where the job is run.

  • Compressing data pump export files

    I am running 10g R2 on sun and aix. Is it possible to compress the output from data pump like you could with piping exp? I have a DW that is about 5T, and we wanted to be able to utilize data pump to dump data, but wanted these output files compressed.

  • Can we load data in chunks using data pump ?

    We are loading data using data pump. So I want to clear my understanding.
    Please correct me if I am wrong on my understandings -
    ODI will fetch all data from source (whether it is INIT or CDC ) in one go and unload into staging area.
    If it is true, will performance hamper in case very huge data (50 million records at source) at source as ODI tries to load entire data in one go. I believe it will give better performance if we load in chunks using data pump.
    Please confirm and correct.
    Also I would like to know how can we configure chunk load using data-pump.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Dinesh.

    You may consider usingLKM Oracle to Oracle (datapump)
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28280_01/integrate.1111/e12644/oracle_db.htm#r15c1-t2
    In 11g ODI reads from source and write to target in parallel. This is the case where you specify select query in source command and insert/update query in the target command. At source side Odi reads records from source and add them to a data queue. At target side a parallel thread reads data from the data queue and writes to the target. So the overall performance would be the slower of the read or write process.
    Thanks,

  • Data Pump .xlsx into a SQL Server Table and the whole 32-Bit, 64-Bit discussion

    First of all...I have a headache!
    Found LOTS of Google hits when trying to data pump a .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table. And the whole discussion of the Microsoft ACE 64-Bit Driver or the Microsoft Jet 32-Bit Driver.
    Specifically receiving this error...
    An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft Office Access Database Engine"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "External table is not in the expected format.".
    Error: 0xC020801C at Data Flow Task to Load Alere Coaching Enrolled, Excel Source [56]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER.  The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "Excel Connection Manager"
    failed with error code 0xC0202009.
    Strangely enough, if I simply data pump ONE .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table utilizing my SSIS Package, it seems to work fine. If instead I am trying to be pro-active and allowing for multiple .xlsx Files by using a Foreach Loop Container and a variable
    @[User::FileName], it's erroring out...but not really because it is indeed storing the rows onto the SQL Server Table. I did check all my Delay
    Why does this have to be sooooooo difficult???
    Can anyone help me out here in trying to set-up a SSIS Package in a rather constrictive environment to pump a .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table? What in God's name am I doing wrong? Or is all this a misnomer? But if it's working how do I disable the error
    so that is stops erroring out?

    Hi ITBobbyP,
    According to your description, when you import data of .xlsx file to SQL Server database, you got the error message.
    The error can be caused by the following reasons:
    The excel file is locked by other processes. Please kindly resave this file and name it to other file name to see if the issue will be fixed.
    The ACE(Access Database Engine) is not up to date as Vaibhav mentioned. Please download the latest ACE and install it from the link:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13255.
    The version of OFFICE and server bitness is not the same. To solve the problem, please refer to the following document:

  • Data Pump - expdp and slow performance on specific tables

    Hi there
    I have af data pump export af a schema. Most of the 700 tables is exported very quickly (direct path) but a couple of them seems to be extremenly slow.
    I have chekced:
    - no lobs
    - no long/raw
    - no VPD
    - no partitions
    - no bitmapped index
    - just date, number, varchar2's
    I'm runing with trace 400300
    But I'm having trouble reading the output from it. It seems that some of the slow performning tables is runinng with method 4??? Can anyone find an explanation for the method in the trace:
    1 > direct path (i think)
    2 > external table (i think)
    4 > ?
    others?
    I have done some stats using v$filestat/v$session_wait (history) - and it seems that we always wait for DB seq file read - and doing lots and lots of SINGLEBLKRDS. Not undo is read
    I have a table 2.5 GB -> 3 minutes
    and then this (in my eyes) similar table 2.4 GB > 1½ hrs.
    There are 367.000 blks (8 K) and avg rowlen = 71

  • How can we import object from 1 user to another user using DATA PUMP

    hi,
    i have taken full export by EXPDP( data pump) now i want to import user objects from target user of one database to another user of different database.
    plz reply me solution
    Thanks

    Hi,
    impdp 'user/user@db' DIRECTORY=DATA_PUMP_DIR(DEFAULT) DUMPFILE=FILENAME.dmp LOGFILE=IMPORT.LOG REMAP_SCHEMA=SOURCE SCHEMA:TArget SCHEMA
    1.Before Import check whether user importing has read,write on directory.
    2.Always Try to Add logfile clause This will help.
    3.Add TABLE_EXISTS_ACTION=REPLACE if you want target schema tables to be replaced by source schema table(if both has same table)

  • How can I use the data pump export from external client?

    I am trying to export a bunch of table from a DB but I cant figure out how to do it.
    I dont have access to a shell terminal on the server itself, I can only login using TOAD.
    I am trying to use TOAD's Data Pump Export utility but I keep getting this error:
    ORA-39070: Unable to open the log file.
    ORA-39087: directory name D:\TEMP\ is invalid
    I dont understand if its because I am setting the parameter file wrong or if the utility is trying to find that directory on the server whereas I am thinking its going to dump it to my local filesystem where that directory exists.
    I'd hate to have to use SQL Loader to create ctl files for each and every table...
    Here is my parameter file:
    DUMPFILE="db_export.dmp"
    LOGFILE="exp_db_export.log"
    DIRECTORY="D:\temp\"
    TABLES=ACCOUNT
    CONTENT=ALL
    (just trying to test it on one table so far...)
    P.S. Oracle 11g

    ORA-39070: Unable to open the log file.
    ORA-39087: directory name D:\TEMP\ is invalidDirectory here it should not be physical location, its a logical representation.
    For that you have to create a directory from SQL level, like create directory exp_dp..
    then you have to use above created directory as DIRECTORY=exp_dp

  • How to find table with colum that not support by data pump network_link

    Hi Experts,
    We try to import a database to new DB by data pump network_link.
    as oracle statement, Tables with columns that are object types are not supported in a network export. An ORA-22804 error will be generated and the export will move on to the next table. To work around this restriction, you can manually create the dependent object types within the database from which the export is being run.
    My question, how to find these tables with colum that that are object types are not supported in a network export.
    We have LOB object and oracle spital SDO_GEOMETRY object type. our database size is about 300G. nornally exp will takes 30 hours.
    We try to use data pump with network_link to speed export process.
    How do we fix oracle spital users type SDO_GEOMETRY issue during data pump?
    our system is 32 bit window 2003 and 10GR2 database.
    Thanks
    Jim

    Hi,
    I remember there being issues with sdo_geometry and DataPump. You may want to contact oracle support with this issue.
