Data recovery from Hard Drive using external USB adaptor

Hi all,
Satellite L655D-S5066BN laptop.
My moderboard or processor failed the other day. (Computer power is on, but it would not boot at all, only the fan seems to run at full speed. Other than that, it is totally dead, not even the Toshiba BIOS logo, no hard drive activity at all).
I removed the hard drive and pluged it in an external adaptor and tried to read it from my desktop.
It seems to work fine, as I was able to access it and copy all the pictures and music files.
They were under c:\Pictures and respectively c:\Music directories.
However, when I try to access My Documents forlder I get an error telling me that I don't have credentials to access that directory.
The computer did not have any passoword protecting the User Account, and didn't use any encription software.
Only my daughter was the only user.
Questions:
Is any way to access those folders that seem to be protected?
Would it be worth trying to replace the motherboard / processor ? If so where would I find such a motherboard?
Thank you for your feedback.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Apparently, I found the solution.
Doing the below procedure I was able to access the files and copy all the content of My Documents.
To resolve this issue, you must turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:
Turn off Simple File Sharing:
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.
Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears.
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group.
If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
Click OK.
You may receive the following error message, where Folderis the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Click Yes.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and the folder contents.

  • Recovery from hard drive

I was instructed to reset my notebook to repair fingerprint device.
Thought I had backup of data on external hard drive, but not.
Computer illiterate, but wanted to know if it is possible to recover data from hard drive?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please check professional services in your area, normally they charge few hundred dollars depending on recovery rates but never get 100%. There are few tools such as:
        http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-formatted-partition.htm
You may want to try yourself.
    Good luck.

  • Easiest Way to Backup Main Hard Drive to External USB Hard Drive

I was wondering what the easiest way is to backup my main internal hard drive to an external usb hard drive on a regular basis?
    Thanks for the help

Carbon Copy Cloner is NOT "freeware":
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
The trouble with CCC and a USB drive, is that if you ever have trouble with your iBook's hard drive, you won't be able to boot from a USB drive to copy everything back with Carbon Copy Cloner.
I would recommend booting from the Mac OS X install DVD that came with your computer and opening the Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. There you can make a "restore" from your iBook's hard drive to the USB drive. If necessary, you can do the reverse as well.

  • Hello all, how do I back up a folder as new library to free space from hard drive to external drive BUT leave my favorites pictures still on hard drive?

Hello all, I organise all my photos in a base folder by year and then sub folders for each destination I have visited, i.e. 2013 then USA as sub folder.  I would like to backup each year as new library to external hard drive which I can do.  BUT I keep a copy of my favourite pics in various albums which can have photos from multilpe years.  After backing up to external hard drive I would like to delete the year folder but keep the pics in the album.  Is this possible?  If so, how?

To be more accurate, I have no issue doing the backup folder as new library but when i delete from hard drive it deletes all pics that were in my albums.  I would ideally like to keep my favourite selection of photos on my hard drive.

  • DELETING FROM HARD DRIVE ( USING AN APPLE)

I had a hard time at first to figure this out.
    Flag pictures with an X
Message - Delete the rejected master photo from disk or just remove them from lightroom.
Choose - Delete remove from dick.
Secret !!! to remove from Hard Drive (you must empty trash)then they are removed
    Good Luck,
    Rick Rickard

This is pretty standard behavior on a Mac, and it provides you wil another chance to reconsider esp. if you learn that you've trashed a whole folder instead of one image.
You can also just hit delete from a folder view and get that dialogue.

  • Retrieving data from hard-drive - using it as an external hard-drive

Hi, first post here. Really hope you guys can help me out
My mac died over the christmas holidays (the motherboard fried from a water accident) and consequently I cannot get access to all my music and pictures on its hard-drive. I know the hard-drive is still functionable because an employee from a mac reseller store managed to retrieve as essay I desperately needed for it.
What I want to know is how I can remove the hard-drive from the mac and how i can use it as an external hard-drive so I can retrieve all of the information from it into my new laptop - which is a windows I'm ashamed to say (money is tight!). Also, would the fact my new laptop is windows affect whether i can move the data from the mac hard-drive to it?
Hope you can help, I need those pictures!
    Chris

Hey Robot and sorry for your lose -
Here's a video to get your drive out: [Video to get Drive out|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuyi-NWLLz4]. You'll need to go through the the point of removing the EMI shield with the T8. Then put the drive in a a 2.5" SATA enclosure and hook it up to your new notebook.
    Good luck to you -GDF

  • Satellite A100 - data recovery from Hard Disk Drive

    Hi,
I have recently tried to help a friend with recovering data of his Toshiba Satelitte A100 that screen has died.
I thought this would be a simply task of removing the hard drive and putting it a HDD caddie and attaching it to another computer,
This does not seem to work.
I can put the hard drive back into the computer and i can hear the computer boot up and was able to see it with a LCD Screen. I have been able to remove the data this way so we are safe.
My question is why can we seem to remove the drive and see it on another computer?
I assume there must be some interface or format that the laptop may use for the recovery section and so cant be seen as a normal drive.
If I couldnt remove the data because say the motherboard died. Is there any way to be able to see the data on another computer.
    Email: [[email protected]]

    >I thought this would be a simply task of removing the hard drive and putting it a HDD caddie and attaching it to another computer
I have done this several times and it works perfectly.
I had full access to all saved data on all partitions.
Similar in on notebook with two HDDs.
I have Satellite A300 with two HDDs inside. On one HDD Ive installed WXP and on another Win7.
Each OS can see saved data on other HDD.
Maybe is there some problem with HDD or with HDD caddie.
Have you tried to connect this HDD to other notebooks to see if the problem is the same?

  • Data Recovery After Hard Drive Failure!

Ok, basically, I've got a 2 1/2 year old iBook G4 with a bombed hard drive, and unfortunately, the last time I backed up was around 3 months ago. Here's what happened right before the crash: some applications like Widgets and Safari were acting fluky, and it wouldn't let me open Word documents, so I restarted, because I thought it might have something to do with the fact that i had downloaded the new version of itunes not that long ago and hadn't restarted since. well, when i restarted, the gray screen with the wheel and the apple symbol went on for a really long time, and then the blue screen came up with the cursor, but nothing else happened, and the blue screen just stayed there. as far as i know, the hard drive wasn't making any unusual noises, just the usual occasional soft sounds that my hard drive has always made (there are usual sounds, right?) a piece of information that might be useful is that the hard drive was almost full (it only had about 5 GB left, which i understand is how much you should leave) could this have caused the failure maybe? anyway, i tried using the hard drive as a target and tried getting another computer to recognize it and pull the files off, but that didn't work. so, i brought it into the apple store, and they got it to boot up but using some external hard drive, i think. they tried disk utility, but that didn't see my hard drive. then the tried disk warrior, and that saw it and repaired it or something, but then it couldn't get the drive to mount. so, i'm assuming that because disk warrior didn't work and couldn't get it to mount, then other software like data rescue, etc... won't either. like all computer users, i've got some REALLY REALLY important data on there, and all the data recovery places i've gotten quotes from are pretty pricey. if the drive doesn't require physical data recovery, only non-physical, as i hope, the cheapest is still $350. even so, the person on the phone there didn't seem to know nearly as much as the people at the more pricier places. so, are there any other options besides expensive data recovery? i read something about using dd - a unix thing, but i don't know the first thing about it (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) so i'm not sure i want to risk messing it up even more. and, if worse comes to worst, then i'll use a data recovery place... but can anyone tell me if they've used any of the data recovery companies below, and which ones are good?
(first three do evaluation for free, and then you decide if you want to continue based on more accurate price idea)
    MacintoshDataRecovery.com
    $500 non physical
    $1100-1600 physical
    Heroic Efforts
    http://www.heroicdata.com/data_recovery
    $350 non physical
ships to another (very expensive) place if physical
    ACS Data Recovery
    http://www.acsdata.com/index.htm
    $600-700 non physical
    DriveSavers.com
(recommended by Apple, probably the best, but the most steep, too)
could cost anywhere from $500-$2700 and $200 evaluation fee even if data is unrecoverable
Since this is our fourth hard drive failure in four different iBooks in 2 1/2 years, i am starting to become seriously disillusioned about the quality of the hardware Apple uses...not that i would ever get a dell or anything, but still....
THANK YOU in advance for any tips you might be able to offer, and also for reading this extremely long post!

I have read good reports concerning Data Rescue although I have not used it myself.
Once you get your data back, focus on a regular (even daily) backup routine, because as you know only so well, the question is not if a drive will fail, it's when.
    My condolences, by the way.

  • Data recovery after hard drive crash.

I've been using Palm Desktop Software 4.1.4 basically as a great Index Card app.  My hard drive died but I recovered my DAT files from backups.  On a new computer (Windows 7 x64) I reinstalled PDF 4.1.4 and added my .DAT files, but the software doesn't recognize them--nor will it allow me to use the User Names from the original installation.  I tried re-installation x3 with no success--I repeated the process with the 6xx version of PDF, again with no success.
Is there any way I can retrieve my data and avoid having to re-type all of them?
    Thanks.  Haddox Sothoron

    1.
If you can boot, try using a linux liveCD  like systemrescue.  Use a flash drive to copy everything to the flash drive.
    2.
If you can't boot, then you can try connecting the drive from another computer - not sure how that works, but it has
    been done before.

  • How do you locate the file where iPhoto library is kept? I moved iPhoto library from hard drive to external dedicated photo drive.

I am trying to restore some elements of my iPhoto library using time machine.
Apple instructions call for locating the file where iPhoto library is kept, and tells you where it is on your hard drive. But I've recently moved my iPhoto library to a dedicated external hard drive, and copied my i photo library there. when i click on it, all the photos are there, but it's an iPhoto library, not a file.
When I go into time machine and click on the date i would like to enter, most of my apps have a circle with a line through it, unaccessible. So: a related question, how would i retrieve a photo file from time machine's previous backup? thank you.

    Thank you!
I am trying to retrieve photo uploads from my Android phone. When I last updated my OS, most of these vaporized, leaving only thumbnails. I have had two lengthy sessions with Apple phone support, but still haven't solved the problem.
Apparently I can't go back to July '14 iPhoto in time machine and browse files; i have to copy the entire library.
Which I just did, taking 2 hours.
In order to open the iPhoto library from July '14, I had to first update iPhoto.
When I went into the files, the same problem existed -- photo files gone, only thumbnails there. So now I'm thinking that it's the update that was the problem. This scares me to death, because when we're asked to update, we don't get a menu of preferences to make sure something has been unchecked, like the copy option i had enabled when opening photo files from my phone, which i store in a dropbox folder.
No one at Apple could tell me why this happened, so I have no idea how to prevent it from happening in the future.
That's why I'm trying to create better backups...but i can't figure out deja vu, because it won't open and sync the iPhoto library folder -- it wants me to find the file, and i don't know where it is on the external dedicated photo drive.
I realize this is about six issues, not one. But I'm really appreciative of any help i can get!

  • I need help in restoring data recovered from hard drive crash to new hard drive

I have the data that was recovered by a recovery service (long story) from my wife's hard drive after it crashed, which is now stored on my computer. There are two user data sets that have been recovered, one for each of us. I need to put each on my wife's computer with its new hard drive, which now has OSX 10.10.? (Yosemite) on it.
My wife's computer was running OSX 10.7 (Lion) when the hard drive failed and my computer is still running OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
I was told that I should use the Data Transfer Utility (starting my computer up while holding the "T" key), but I have forgotten what I have to do when I start up her computer. Are there any operating system compatibility problems that are sensitive to this process?

That is a Microsoft Windows question??  You should probably ask this question on Microsoft's Forums.  BTW there is no "Windows 9".  Only Windows 7, Windows 8 and apparently MS is skipping the number 9 in favor of 10.

A new iMac includes the migration assistant utility. Plug your external drive into your new iMac. Start up the iMac for the first time. The iMac first time procedure ask if you want to migrate your data. Say yes.
You can run migration assistant later. It's in:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Migration Assistant

  • Moving iTunes music folder from hard drive to external drive

I see a couple of topics related to iTunes folder locations and losing track of where the file are. What's the right way to migrate from having the iTunes music files on my hard drive (C:) to using an external drive...without having to re-map everything manually? I'm running out of space on the C: drive!

There's actually hundreds of those topics. It gets asked daily.
Did you still have a specific question after reading several of them?
Here is a very thorough and wordy article on it

    Hi:
If you can still read the windows 7 product key on the bottom of your notebook you can make your own W7 installation disk.
    Here's how:
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Accessing photos from hard drive using photoshop starter edition 3.2

Hi, I have recently bought an external hard drive and have now copied all my photos from my c drive to my external hard drive. I would now like to access my photos directly from the external hard drive as well as download photos from my camera directly onto the external hard drive, can someone please help? I am currently using Adobe Photoshop Starter Edition 3.2 and running Microsoft XP. I read somewhere that I will need to change something in the Organizer, is this possible for Adobe Starter Edition 3.2?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Christina Fletcher

    Hi Christina,
The only thing you will encounter in doing is you might have to repeat
the process of bringing the images back into PSA SE because unlike the
Elements Family, it does not have the ability to move things.
I would suggest trying two things:
    1. Begin by moving the images and then (AFTER YOU MOVE THE IMAGES) click
on File>Reconnect all files. The problem with this method is you have
reconnect EACH file separately. Not a very pleasant option.
    2. (Recommended) If you are not worried about tagging as much, then
simply click on Get Photos>From Folder and then pick the External Drive.
It might force you to pick a certain folder, so I do recommend keeping
them in something like My Picture Ext so that it is easier for you, but
    it will do it.
    Cheers
