Data recovery from semi-partioned external drive - Disk Utility

In a hurry to erase a DVD-RW over the weekend I stupidly started to erase an external HD!
In DU's disk list I selected my main external USB HD and clicked erase... I noticed when the progress bar said 'Partitioning' and realised that this wasn't an optical disk. I quit DU as quickly as I could (about 2 seconds into the erase) but fear now that my data is not recoverable.
Can anyone explain the erase process when this command is executed?
I have Disk Warrior and Tech Tool to help recover data but I'd like to know a bit more about what I'm doing. Opening a Finder window and the HD is empty. Showing hidden files through Onyx only shows hidden OS files. Does DU start by erasing the directory file? If so is my data likely to be intact and recoverable?
It is a Barracuda 500gb disk, which contains around 210gb of movies, music, photos, letters, website masters, and other important stuff. I was planning to get a 2nd HD to start backing up but thought it was pretty safe for now as it's a new disk and I wouldn't do anything as stupid as to accidentally erase it...
Any help or tips you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Follow-up and further headaches...
I used Data Rescue 2 to thoroughly scan the hard disk and identify the vast majority of files on the disk, despite the absence of the directory (I didn't use Disk Warrior until after the scan/salvage, DW couldn't successfully replace the directory to reflect the data on the disk). I have salvaged everything I could to other external HDs.
DR2 identified 2 groups of data: CBR content, with files organised by type, and the folder hierarchy as it was originally.
I salvaged the original hierarchy, only to find out later that the files were in fact 'ghosts' (filename intact, file icon present, and file size as it should be) which can't be opened by any associated app.
So, I have gone back to salvage the data by CBR content, which is all intact and openable, but virtually unusable: Generic file types like JPEG, MP3, AVI etc are fine to an extent, but I have no idea where to find my website master (domain.sites2) for example! Plus all of these files by type have been given sequential file-type names which makes sorting through a near-impossible task.
Is there any way I can merge the two lots of data to have my original hierarchy with the data of CBR?

  • Data recovery from a Lacie external Hard Drive with blocked permissions

I have a Lacie 160 gig external hard drive. While trying to block another user on my computers data from being unintentionally stored on the external drive, I apparently blocked all access to the HD. After single clicking on the drives icon I clicked on File, get info, in ownership and permission I must have chosen no access. I guess I blocked access on the device and not a file. I'm finding out this is a bad thing. Now the external drives icon doesn't appear on the desk top. I can find it in disk utility but the apple care guy says the only way to access the drive is by erasing all the data on the drive. He said I might find help here. Is there 3rd party software that deals with this? Maybe drive recovery? Any suggestions are welcome.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

If the volume has Mac OS X installed on it, select the disk in the Disk Utility window and click the Repair Permissions button; this will correct the settings. If not, follow the instructions below:
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /Volumes/ as the folder's location. Next, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder while keeping the Volumes folder open. Type the following into the window:
    chmod 755
followed by a space. Drag the volume in question into the Terminal window and press Enter. Log out and back in, and see if the drive reappears on your desktop; if not, use:
    sudo chown shortname
and then drag the volume back into the Terminal window, type in your administrator password, and press Enter. Log out and back in.

  • Data recovery from serially installed hard drives

Like many other users on these boards, by X205 is refusing to boot.
My question: How can I recover the data on my hard drives, since there are two of them?
I ran a search to find all of the files I wanted (*.jpg in this case), and the search came back with hundreds of files (photos) that I am trying to recover....but it won't let me open them up.
I'm guessing since the drives are installed in series in this machine, somehow I need to find a way to read them both to access these files?
    Any help is appreciated!

You might be able to hook it up externally and run some data recovery software on the drive...
That being said, you'd need probably need to buy the software, since this type of recovery is a little more advanced and will need to rebuild the control table/data.

  • Backup startup external drives, disk utility, dmgs

    Dear All,
I am trying to backup my Mac Mini to a Firewire drive with an image file (dmg) using Disk Utility. But I get this error: "Unable to create dmg. Resource busy." That is due to my startup disk being my Mini which I'd like to backup. So I've tried to make a backup drive with a working system 10.4.10 folder, but found that my Mini did not come with install disks. Dragging and dropping the files from the Mini to an external disk does not result in a hard disk that can be used as a startup disk. Is this normal? When I opened the Mac Mini package it did not indicate that I was due to find install disks.
So how can I make an external backup FWire drive that I can start from, and then do a backup using Disk Utility of my Mini's internal hard drive?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.

  • External drive - disk utility won't display long - can't repair

Long time mac user --- this one has me stumped.
I have an external disk that I'm using for time machine. USB3.
Sometimes I'm in a hurry and I don't disconnect it properly. Looks like that's messed up the drive - I get "disk not ejected properly" now. Fine. That happens. Reformat, repair, apply journal, whatever.
But the drive doesn't show up in disk utility or `diskutil list`. Or, it does show up, for almost exactly 10 seconds. Although, now, it seems to show up for only about 2 seconds. Too little time to click on it and try to repair it.
I see the drive pop in, 'disk1', and in diskutil list, then vanishes. In the diskutil GUI, it shows up for less time than that, maybe only a second or two. Then the dreaded "Disk not ejected properly" dialog shows up. Every once in a while, OSX seems to retry and the disk pops up. When it does, it's read enough volume information to see that there is a controller, it's found a disk of the right size, it knows about the old volume, and then it vanishes. again.
Any tips? How do I "nuke from orbit" if disk utility keeps vanishing the disk before I can click on it. Lay in wait and hope a click hits it?
There must be a better way.....

    Love the resounding silence here.
The problem was hardware. Even though putting in a different disk to the dock seemed to work, that would detach after about 3 minutes.
Buying a new dock and switching to it solved the problem.
I wish I knew which system log would have helped me trouble shoot this without having to buy another doc, but at least it's not a software problem.

  • Semi Functional Disc Drive/Disk Utility Useless

Ok, the other day I got some new DVD-R (memorex)s and tried to burn a copy of a home movie I made onto the DVD-R. Initially, I put in the DVD and began burning the movie, and about half way through the "write" process it cancels out and says "ERROR INCOMPATIBLE DISC", and spits out the DVD. So now, I try again, only now I put in the DVD, in about a second it makes this rough sounding noise, and then spits the DVD out again. The DVD is not misshapen or anything. What I thought was strange was that it was burning CD's fine, and playing regular DVD's with no trouble. Until last night, I put in a real DVD and it just spit it out. Won't accept it. So I check out Disk Utility, and it says that my HARD DRIVE, not my Pioneer disc drive "has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility. If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive." It also labels my "S.M.A.R.T." status, as "failing". My computer is working perfectly besides this DVD-R issue, so I don't see why my hard drive is reporting a fatal hardware error, when it's the disc drive that seems to be having troubles. Any thoughts?

  • HT201250 Data recovery from WD Elements Hard drive after Time Machine formatted it

I plugged my brother in laws WD Elements hard drive into my MacBook Pro. It asked me if I wished to use this drive as my time machine back up to which I answered no. I was going to copy and paste some movies onto his drive. I  not sure how it occurred but Time Machine has now "partitioned or formatted " the drive and erased all data that was on it. The drive appears empty on my MacBook and is now unrecognisable on his PC computer. The drive had some important documents and I am praying that I somehow can recover them. Does anyone have Amy suggestions as to where to start ?? Please help !!!

It probably got reformated to a Mac specification which is why the PC can't recognise it. I am not sure if any of the mac recovery programs would work but maybe someone else can advise you. One of the professional recovery businesses could help but are very expensive.

  • Any Tech Geeks out there ever done a DIY data recovery from a trashed drive

    Hi,
I have a iMac G5 that went belly up about three weeks ago. The problem was undoubtedly the hard drive, which was totally missing even when I used third party recovery programs like Diskwarrior and Data Recovery. I pulled the drive and replaced it. BUT, now I am desperate to get things off the dead drive. I DID back up, but my delightful 2 year old "ate" my back up disks and they are beyond repair.
    sigh
I simply don't have $300 to pay for professional data recovery and the missing data has sentimental value, but not much beyond that. I can't justify a price tag of $300 for old pictures and word documents.
Anyone ever done a DIY data recovery and can share the details with me??
I suspect the drive is physically damaged because it makes the ugliest noises when you try to power it up.
    Tricia

You can purchase data recovery software such as Data Rescue II or File Salvage ( VersionTracker or MacUpdate ) and attempt to recover the files.
In order for recovery software to work the drive must be physically accessible and connected to your computer. Because you've removed it you would need an external enclosure for the drive (Firewire or USB.) However, if the drive is non-functional (won't run) then recovery software will not help.

  • Can I get a data recovery from Apple if my iMac was in the hard drive replacement programme and I wasn't notified about it?

Basically my iMac just crashed and I searched on Google for replacing my hard drive and came across the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program at http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
Which is that Apple is asking all 2009 - 2011 iMac users to return their iMac for a free hard drive replacement because it currently has a fault in it. After entering in my serial number, I see that my iMac is elegible for a replacement.
I did register my iMac with Apple, but I didn't receive any email about this program and I lost all my recent data because of the faulty hard drive. I never had an issue before with the drive so this just happened out of the blue.
Is it possible to get a free data recovery from Apple for this? I find that it was a lack of communication that I lost most of my data.

I completely understand that it's my responsibility to back up my data but I have it set to every 2nd month, not on a weekly or daily basis to back up the data.
Apple might not be in data recovery business but could they not acquire a third party to do this?
    This is what happened:
It was on sleep overnight and when I tried waking it, it was lagging badly. So I shut it down and restarted it. I phoned into techincal support to find out whats wrong, but they were giving me advice to reset the params etc. But i think it made it worse because it didnt want to get passed the white start up screen.
So I phoned back to ask if it's a usual issue with my version of iMac and the man replied that it isn't common and that I should run the disk utility to check the hard drives health.
I installed Mountain Lion on a USB and started the disk utility. Then it highlighted in red that it's a hardware fault and cannot be repaired by the disk utility. Therefore the hard drive has a serious fault with it.
That's when I Google'd for a replacement drive and came across the program. The techincal guy didn't even tell me about it or anything.
If I knew about this sooner, I would have taken it in for a replacement.

  • HT201250 Transferring files from a Seagate external drive

I have a seagate external backup drive (from my PC)
There are some files I want to transfer to my new IMac, before using this external drive as the normal back-up, with Time Machine.
But how do I first transfer over these data files?

Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Select your external drive on the left then under the Erase tab select MS-DOS(FAT) as your volume format. Keep in mind that re-formatting your drive will erase all of the data so make sure you have it all backed up on your computer before you re-format.

  • MBP 13' Won't boot from CD or external Drive

Recently my MBP 13 (newest version) occasionally crashes with the grey screen death which forces me to hard shut down. This led me to believe my directory may be corrupted so I tried to boot from my external OS X (Snow Leopard) with DiskWarrior installed to do the repair. Unfortunately, when the grey Apple logo shows up, the computer crashes again.
I tried again using original recovery CD to boot hoping to use Disk Utility, but it does the same thing where it crashes at the Apple logo.
I can't seem to figure out why. Anyone have experience with this issue? how do I resolve this issue???!
    Thanks

The external drive is a clone of a different computer.
This could be why it won't boot to it. It may not have the correct drivers to run the 13'. You really should have a clone of each Mac you own. Perfect for trouble shooting this type of thing. You can partition an external to have clones of several different Macs. I do that, plus I clone each to an extra internal on the desktop models.
However, if this have any impact it should've occurred in the past?
I think you just got lucky in the past.
I just spent 2 hrs re-installing OS X again and restoring. It's still doing the same thing. (It appears I can boot from the restore CD, but not external drive).
What install method did you use please?
If you can boot from the DVD, go to disk utility and see what your internal drives S.M.A.R.T. status is. Might as well run a Disk Repair while you are there.
Also, since you can boot from disks,
I would try running the extended version of your Apple Hardware Test.
It's not perfect but may flag something.
I'm assuming you can't boot from your DiskWarrior disk cause it's an older version that won't boot the new 13'?
That's the case for me and my MacBook. Since you can't boot to your bad clone, do you still have another Mac around? If so, you could boot in Target Disk Mode and use Diskwarrior from the other computer to try and repair the 13'.

  • Incorrect project dates after moving to new external drive

    I'm running iMovie 09 8.0.5 and Leopard.
I have moved projects from my macbook internal drive to an external drive by dragging them within imovie. I picked move both projects and events. Both projects and events moved. I can play the project from the new external drive. The dates on the events are correct, but the dates on the projects have changed to today's date. Since I have 50+ projects, they are not sorted properly. The project on my internal drive are grouped by year. How do I get this on the external drive? I can find no way to set the project date within iMovie.

An update. I've figured out a workaround.
First of all, you must created folders yourself in the project library for the external hard drive. That is done by right-clicking on the external hard drive in project library. I must have done that a long time ago for the internal hard drive.
Second changing the date associated with the project itself is tricky. It is governed by the modification date of the Project file within the project itself. You can't see this file without using "Show Package Contents" in the finder.
The easiest way to change the modification date is using the terminal and touch command.
I have a external disk named Home Videos Primary 1000 GB
The project name is 2007 Christmas Rocket
and the correct terminal command is
    touch -mt 0801040000 /Volumes/Home\ Videos\ Primary\ 1000\ GB/iMovie\ Projects.localized/2007\ Christmas\ Rocket.rcproject/Project
I entered this command this by typing touch -mt -0801040000 (followed by a space) into the terminal window and then dragging the aforementioned Project file into the terminal window (which provided the correct path).

If all your files are missing
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If files are missing from one folder
Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.
