Data Rescue II Question for Al Van Malsen?

Al Van Malsen,
Thanks. I'm using the Demo right now of Data rescue in target disk mode using my sister's computer. The quick scan revealed nothing but now I'm doing the thorough scan to see if anything pops up. I don't expect it to but at least I can see if it will work.
What about the unplugging and plugging my computer back in to get recovered files. I've noticed that happens when I unplug my Mac normally there is always recovered files in the trash. I'm not expecting this to be a solution just wondering.
Since you were so helpful on my other question I thought I'd post a seperate question.
S.

The files you find in the Recovered Files folder are those previously in /private/tmp/ in Mac OS X or Temporary Items in Mac OS 9, and can be recovered manually by copying them out of that folder without a restart. Powering off the computer improperly won't recover anything except in very special cases, such as if you've deleted something in Mac OS X less than 30 seconds earlier.

  • Will Data Rescue II Mac work on Leopard?

I use a G4 Mac QuickSilver 2002; run Leopard, Tiger, & 9.2.2.  Will ProSoft Data Rescue II work on Leopard?

    According to this NO...
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/515297-REG/Prosoft_25100_Data_Rescue_II_Em ergency.html
But I'm confused, I never bought DR3, but thought I did buy DR II, even though it says it's Data RescueX, & includes Data Rescue Classic for OS9!???
Hmmm, from this it appears that DRII came after DRX...
Supports 10 times more file types for content scans than Data Rescue X
Optimized for Tiger; runs on Panther and Jaguar

So, all I can say is the earlier version or DRX does run on 10.5.8

I'd fully expect a later version, as DRII should also work in 10.5

  • Prosoft Data Rescue for  Hard Drive "No Valid Packages" in Disk Utility

I have a Macbook and I believe the hard drive has crashed. When I turn it on, I get the circle with line through it and the folder with question mark inside blinking.
I got the Install Disk 1 to boot up but can not verify the hard drive. I get the following message "No Valid Packages" and disk verification fails. I also checked the SMART status of the hard drive and it says "Not Supported".
I also can not re-install the operating system, as there is no hard drive that shows up to install it to when I try to run the installer disk.
I know I need a new hard drive, much bigger one. I'm purchasing this today, a 320gb Samsung M6 Series internal drive and a Western digital external 500gb WDE1U5000N.
I also want to purchase the Prosoft Data Rescue but have several questions:
1)I read the this can work if disk utility sees the hard drive. The hard drive is seen in disk utility, but like i said before the drive has failed and it can not mount. I've read other reviews that said Prosoft can still be used in this case, but I want to make sure..please define what is meant by "disk utility being unable to see the hard drive"...Does this mean "dead hard drive or the hard drive not physically being VISIBLE in disk utility (because mine is, I just can't mount or verify it)
2)If I can use Prosoft, when I put it in my damaged Macbook to recover the files, can I then put these files onto my new external drive? Or do I have to have another internal drive to do this? (I'm just buying 1 right now)...How do you get the recovered data off if I can not move it onto an external drive? Do I put it on a disk and then take the damaged hard drive out, put the new one in and then put it on the external?
Sorry for the questions but I want to buy today by 5pm so it ships by Friday to me to fix this ASAP, thanks!

I read the this can work if disk utility sees the hard drive.
Prosoft Data Rescue can help recover files after a software failure. (Usually related file directory problems.) It sounds, however, that you've experienced a hardware failure of your original hard drive. No amount of software can ever recover a hard drive from a hardware failure. If you really need to recover the data, a data recovery service may be able to help. The cost will depend on the steps needed to recover the data and how much data is recovered.

  • Data Rescue II AND Disksaver for failing hard drive?

I need some guidance on rescuing data from an internal hard drive that Disk Utility could not fix. (The drive is making an odd noise, and apparently has a mechanical problem.)
Data Rescue II appears to successfully cloned my iMac's drive, while Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper froze when I attempted to use them on it.
I just finished my cloning of the problem drive with Data Rescue II last night, and I'm debating my next step. I bought Diskwarrior as well, but haven't opened the box yet.
Should I now use Diskwarrior to build a new directory for the clone, or is that new directory generated by the Data Rescue cloning? Also, can you boot from the clone created by Data Rescue II?
I'm thinking of having a replacement drive installed in my iMac, then cloning back to it from the clone I made last night, if it's healthy. Any thoughts?

    Gary,
Always interested in drive failures (and trying to avoid 'em!)
Saw a link on StorageReview to a study done by Google:
    Predicting hard drive failures
Its a study by some Google employees on the failure rates of disk drives deployed within their infrastructure.
Failure Trends In A Large Disk Drive Population
Examining the population of hard drives under deployment within Google
    * In general, there are around four ways a HDD will fail. Firmware zone corruption, electronic failure, mechanical failure, and logical corruption. Unfortunately, S.M.A.R.T only handles a subset of the "mechanical failure" category (mainly media failure and thermal failure), and does not protect against single instance/incident catastrophic mechanical errors (head crash, spindle/servo motor failure, stick-shun).
    * I was surprised about the lack of correlation found between elevated temperature and expected drive reliability. The graph only went up to 50 C, though, and I would expect a much stronger correlation once the temperature reached beyond typical max temp specs.
    * I give props to the google crew for their SMART correlation analysis. I would have loved to see a quick postmortem on all of the failed drives to determine cause, and a breakdown into the top four categories.
    * Side note, logical corruption may lead to data loss, but it does not necessarily mean that the HDD has failed.
    Findings:
    * After a first scan error, drives are 39x more likely to fail within 60 days.
First errors in reallocations, offline reallocations, and prob ational counts are also strongly correlated to higher failure probabilities.
    * A large fraction of our failed drives have shown NO SMART error signals watsoever.
    * There was a lack of a consistent pattern of higher failure rates for higher temperature drives for for those drives at higher utilization levels.
    * Some of the charts point to drive failure early on, a "survival of the fittest" perhaps.
    http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf
SMART is not that reliable at predicting, of course if it shows a problem, it is just that much worse. I try to torture and kill a drive right off the bad, if it survives the first week of abuse, it is probably going to survive anyway. But being paranoid, never leave data to chance, assume that it will some day fail or at least need to be reformatted or retired.

  • Using Airport Time Capsule as target/workplace for a Data Rescue III type software

I need to recover data from a 'bad' disk on a Macbook anno 2007. My idea is to mount the drive on a Macbook Air using target disk mode and a thunderbolt/Firewire connection. The mounting goes fine but copying the data leads to a hanging Mac Air. So now I put all hope on a Data Rescue type software in that such software will circumvent the hanging issue! Problem is that the Mac Air don't have enough memory to store the hopefully recovered data. Essentially, I have no proper 'target disk' for the recovered data and need to buy one (as well as buying the rescue/recovery software).
So, can I use a Airport Time Capsule as target/workplace for a Data Rescue type software on my Mac Air? Is this a proper mountable hard drive?
    Thanks,
    RA

No, it is better to get a USB drive. You can mount a TC drive but it is just as likely to unmount itself half way through.. keep networks out of the already many problems you have.

  • To write data as an IDOC for EDI 858 (bill of lading) through reports.

    Hey everybody,
I need serious help about this. I am back to my question that I asked before. I don't understand still how to write out the data as an IDOC when we are not doing EDI through a VAN but dumping the file onto both application and presentation server and then taking the file from there and manually uploading the file to the website. So it is basically a flat file created where the data is written out in the same way as it would be done when an IDOC is generated. In this there is no XML data conversion involved or anything but writing out data as an IDOC for an EDI 858.
Please somebody explain and if possible give me some bit of code or link to where I can find something similar that would help.
    Thanks,
    Minal

Hey thanks for all ur help..
Now see lemme jot down the scenario and the solution that I have thought of (with ur help)...
See we have only CRM and no R/3 here...right
Now using CRM transaction CRMD_BUS2000115(Maintain sales Transaction) I create an order. Ok..the transaction type attached to it is a Z transaction type ZSAM...ok ...and I have a Z action profile ZST_ORDER_MESSAGES where I have scheduled the automatic method call to send Bdocs...ok...
Now this will send Bdocs to the site which I will define using transaction SMOEAC and assign here. Now the Bdocs structure is complex as it flows as per GUIDS in this case (i.e. CRM ) right.....
So I need to map these Bdocs to Idocs throgh some selection programs (e.g RBDMIDOC) but I don’t know if this is right or will it at all help?
Then my plan is that once I get the Idocs I can have all the normal config as in R/3 wherein I will
    1. define the RFC
    2. define the Logical system
    3. define the receiver port
    4. define the partner profile
    5. create the site and assign it to the interface type.
But how will I map the Bdocs to the idoc ...can u please help me with this?

  • Data Rescue II and my HD

When I updated my G4 to Leopard, I did a clean install on a new drive. When finished I took the old 120 gig drive that came with the machine and hooked it up as an external to remove some data. That process corrupted the drive and it's not recognized except as a drive needing initializing. There is no click of death on the drive, it spins up and seems to work just fine. The OS sees it as a 1.1 terabyte blank drive (I've been putting in drives and externals for 30 years, and this is the first time I've ever had a problem).
So the only data that wasn't backed up was hundred of CD's that were imported as mp3. While this could be done again, it's a LOT of work. (Yes, I know about backup and my personal machine is backed up daily, but this was a department machine at my school...)
Yesterday I downloaded Data Rescue II -- it saw the drive as a 1.1 terabyte drive and said it would take five thousand hours or something to look at it. I let it run all night and stopped it this morning after it had done around 140 gig of my 120 gig drive (???). I let it go a few more hours to show what could be recovered and it found quite a bit (considering it had only done about 140 gig of the 1.1 terabytes that this 120 gig drive has....)
    So here's my questions:
    1. what makes the drive appear to be a 1.1 terabyte drive? (my suspicion is that the electronics on the drive got trashed, not the platers/heads or anything physical)
    2. while I don't recall exactly, the list of files that could be recovered included stuff like File001, File002, etc. If those WERE the mp3's and they would have to be identified and re-named, this isn't something that could easily be done and it's probably faster to start over importing into iTunes. Is this a typical end result as far as file names? If I let it go five thousand more hours would I be looking at actual file names (Beethoven - Symphony No. 1 1st movt) or would it always be File004, or would it just depend?
I'm reluctant to spend the money to purchase Data Rescue if all I get are unusable file names since that's of no help.
Someone also suggested I might find a matching drive and switch the electronics and give it a try, but haven't found one yet.
    Any help or suggestions welcome.

The case you bought may not be supporting Leopard, I had one old FW case from my G4 MDD days that was like that. Just get a new OWC Mercury case, or for an emergency, an adapter.
Case not support Leopard? That's the dummest thing I ever heard!! And it turns out to be correct. The case was part of the problem.
Other part of the problem was on of the pins on the HD connection was slightly depressed (didn't notice it at first) and once I pulled the pin back up into position, my Leopard machine did see the drive as the right size, but coudln't do anything with it. My wife's older Tiger machine read the drive just fine and all the stuff is right there.
Sometimes (maybe all the time?) it seems to me like Apple is designing their software so that ONLY hardware with a little white apple on it will work

  • Need to rescue Garage Band Files with Data Rescue II - what kind of files?

    Hi all -
After a particularly gruesome computer crash, I am trying to reconstruct my lost files using Data Rescue II..... This program goes into the damaged hard drive and downloads all intact files it can find, but it is NOT able to label everything correctly. All it can do is divide things into folders - Audio files, document files, images, mail, misc., and movies. And within these folders are other folders - for instance, in the "Audio" rescued folder, there are hundreds of AIFF files, AIFF1 files, AIFF2, MP3, WAV, m4a, and m4p files.
My question is: can someone please tell me what the heck a Garage Band project file is? That would save me a lot of time in digging through all this material trying to find one....
(Don't get me wrong... I'm grateful to have stuff to dig through! I just hope my Garage Band files are intact and recoverable.)
Has anyone had success saving Garage Band files with Data Rescue II?
    Thanks in advance.

    Aaaagh!
I spoke too soon. Yes,I did indeed find the file that contained all the files I needed to retrieve (using Disk Rescue II). When my 6-hour download of the 78 GB folder finished, I check the files again, and they weren't located in the orphaned section, but in the Hard Drive section under the normal directory, in a folder called .Trashes - within that there was another folder called "501", which contained all the Garageband files I needed to retrieve. However, when I tried to open the downloaded "rescued" files, they were inside a folder called "Macintosh HD", which could not be opened, and I got a message that said "Could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." Not only that, but even after 6 hours of (apparently) downloading the 78 GB folder, my hard drive, which had close to 83 GB of free space, said STILL had almost that same amount.
So did it download anything or not? What was it doing all those 6 hours? I have a file that I can't open, but apparently it's going to be empty anyway.
Here's the full story, for anyone with the patience to listen and offer advice. It looks like now I'm looking for a way to 1) get the permissions to open the .trashes file so that I can download everything, or 2) figure out a way to get Disk Rescue II to open the files and download them regardless of the permissions.
    Full Story -
I am pretty sure that my computer crash was caused by working with the newest version of Garageband 08. Ever since buying it and loading it, my computer has been acting funny whenever I use the Garage Band program - I could only record about one in three attempts since the computer kept freezing as soon as I finished recording a line. I would have to use force restart to get going again.
The day the computer crashed, I was working on a Garage Band project, which kept crashing, and I was also using Finale, Microsoft Word, and iTunes -- all of which are my normal procedure and I'd never had any problems with anything before loading the new Garage Band 08. (See my posts on other discussion topics for more details). After the last freeze, the computer crashed totally and could not be restarted - it would get to the gray screen with the spinning gear and just sit there while the fans ramped up to overload.
I used Disk Warrior to rescue whatever files I could onto an external hard drive, and I started to download all the Garage Band files. However, the "estimated time to completion" said over 6 hours , so I stopped the download after a minute or so and went on to rescue all the other files that were smaller in size and easier to download - I figured I'd set Disk Warrior to download the whole 78 GB set of Garage Band files overnight while I slept. But....when I went back to begin the download again, I noticed that the directory of Garage Band files went only to the letter "C" instead of all the way to "Z" like my original files had done during that earlier attempt to download. I am assuming that somehow, the directory for the files I download before aborting the attempt (A-C) got exchanged with the directories of the original version (A-Z), but the original directory was no where to be found.
I decided to try an archive install in the hopes that I could just restart my computer and get the files out by hand. The archive install went fine, and the computer started up fine and got to the log-in screen, which had changed. I now had two blanks - one for user name and one for password, instead of the choices of names. I tried all my user names and passwords, and asked my wife for her names and passcodes, but nothing worked. The computer had apparently re-set all its permissions and User accounts. I tried using Disk Utility to reset the password in its opening screens, but instead of getting several User options, the only one it allowed me to attempt was "System Administrator (root)", and even that wouldn't let me in to change any passwords.
That's when I downloaded Data Rescue II, which does seem to do a good job of locating lost files. However, since I didn't have permissions to open the computer the last time, I am still apparently facing the same thing when I try to access files copies OFF the computer.
So I'm not out of the woods yet. I can see the files on the Data Rescue screen, but I don't know whether they have permissions tied to them or not, and if they do, whether the system would let me since I don't know what the passwords and user names have defaulted back to.
    Any advice? Please?

  • Can't Open Project Recovered With Data Rescue

    Hi All,
Stupid me, I trashed a project file and emptied the Trash. I had forgotten that a FCP sequence was referencing the DV files contained in that project package. I had no backup of the DV files (please, no preaching - I learned my lesson).
I was able to recover the project file with ProSoft's Data Rescue, but here's the rub:
The original project was created with an earlier version of iMovie, and was reconverted later with iMovie 6 HD in the same folder. Data Rescue does not seem to recognize that it is a package type of file, thus option-clicking does not list Open Package Contents as an option. Double clicking the recovered project file results in iMovie 6 HD trying to convert the file from the older format, but since the package contents don't seem to be available, or arranged correctly, errors occur.
iMovie 6 seems to know the names of the clips, but can't import them from the older format. I am certain the clips are there (there's only 2), given the project size is 17 GB, which looks about right. Thus I feel certain the clips are in there somewhere.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the iMovie version that was used in the initial creation of the project. not that that would help anyway. Is there some way to recover the clips?

Nevermind, the Thorough Search option in Data Rescue found the files I thought were gone for good .

  • Is there a way to turn off the message alert "Cellular data is turned off for _____"?

I turned off cellular data for about half of my apps so I don't go over my data limit (Thanks AT&T). Now every time I open these apps a message alert pops up saying "Cellular Data is Turned Off for _____. You can turn on cellular data for this app in Settings" And it gives two buttons, "Settings" and "Ok".
If it were only a few times, I wouldn't care about closing this message. But now that I have to do it like 20-30 times a day, it has become SUPER ANNOYING. Seriously Apple, how do I turn your stupid message off??? I TURNED OFF MY CELLULAR DATA FOR A REASON, please stop reminding me of what I already know.
AND the worst part is, when that message pops up it locks the phone so the home button doesn't work. Pretty lame software feature in my opinion.

There is a fix for this!  I was about to jailbreak my phone to cure this issue, but found the answer on another thread.
Go to settings/notification center.  Select the app in question and turn the slider for "allow notifications" to ON.  Turn off the sliders below for sounds, etc. Now it shows up in the notification center separately  (or seemingly not at all) and not on your screen when you switch to the app.  Good luck!
