Data storage help please!

  Hi,
I just moved from pc to an iMac (27" i5 with 16gb RAM) and loving it! I am new to data storage as well and need some help with the setup. I have a ton of pics and I'm getting into edditing a lot of pictures and retouching using photoshop cs5. Based on what i have been able to read I was thinking of using maybe 2 drives as RAID 1, and an extra drive as a scratch disk and one more as a time machine... does this make sense?  Is it better just to stack 4 drives?
Thanks!

I would recommend using some high quality external HD to store your raws and tiffs. The drives I'd recommend are:
G-Tech G-DRIVE series
LaCie d2 Quadra series
OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
Each have excellent build quality and good features.  Personally I use the LaCie's ( I have 4 currently) but the other two would be more than welcome on my desk. I would also get a separate drive to use as a Time Machine drive. There are numerous backup strategies you can use and TM is a good place to start. Here are some MacWorld articles that discuss different strategies, as you will see when it comes to back up redundancy is a wise decision.
Backup Plan I
Backup Plan II
Backup Plan III
There is no "best" solution, you need to search for what fits your needs best and research to see if it is totally compatilble with your system and applications.

You need to change the premise of your SSD use.
    see here:
Your Solid State Drive and having enough space inside your Macbook Air & Pro
Solid State Drive usage premise, or the “more space / upgrade SSD” question
There have been questions posed and positions taken by many people who are trying to use their Macbook Air or Pro’s solid state drive (SSD) as a mass media storage device, for either pictures, videos, massive music collections or all three combined; but this should not be the working premise of a ‘limited’ SSD and its use.
In which, it’s the case of those users with either 128GB, 256GB, or even 512GB of internal SSD space, that have or are running “out of space”, that questions are raised. The immediate premise of some users can sometimes be “(how to / if) upgrading my SSD” when in fact in nearly all instances another approach is the logical and sensible one that needs to be looked into and exercised.
Any Macbook containing a SSD should be idealized as a ‘working platform’ notebook containing all your applications, documents, and weekly or bi-weekly necessary files. All collections of media files such as pictures, music, and videos, unless directly needed should be kept off the notebook and on an external hard drive or likewise. While the ‘working platform’ premise is also the case with larger internal conventional hard drives of 1TB+, its implementation isn't as critical except in terms of data protection.
Realistically, you should at most coordinate roughly 20 to 25% of your total SSD space to all audio-video personal use media (picture / music / video collections), leaving the remaining amount on an external HD.
Nobody should consider any notebook a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device; and in the case of a SSD, this is more important for purposes of having sufficient working space on the SSD and reducing SSD ‘bloat’ in which cases someone is wrongly attempting to use the SSD space as a large media storage nexus.
The rare exception to the collective usage and premise of SSD use in which a much larger SSD is truly needed are for those in video and photography professions that require both the extremely fast speeds of the SSD and the onboard storage for large and or many video and photography files. However this also falls under the premise of a ‘working platform’ for such peoples rather than the intent of many who are using the SSD as passive and static data storage for media files very infrequently needed or accessed.
All on-notebook data collections should be logically approached as to necessity, and evaluated as to whether it is active or passive data that likely doesn’t need to be on the notebook, allocations of space-percentages to as-needed work and use, apportioning space for your entertainment media, and questioning whether it should it be on the notebook for more than short-term consumption.
Considerations should be made in the mind of any user in differentiating the necessary system data (System hub) comprising the Mac OSX, applications, necessary documents that both must and should be on your internal SSD, and that of the users personal data (Data hub) comprising created files, pictures, music, videos, PDF files, data created or being created and otherwise, that likely unless being used soon or often should be parked on an external hard drive for consumption, or temporarily loading onto the internal SSD.
You both can and should purchase whichever SSD size you need or see fit, but even in the case of the largest of SSD, unless use-considerations are made, and SSD spaces are allocated as should be the case indicated above, one can easily and immediately run into this quandary of “needing more internal SSD space”, in which instance a different approach in usage must then be implemented.
However it is almost always the case, that such large media files are wanted to be stored internally rather than actually needed, in which case the external HD is both prudent as well as necessary. Additionally costs per MB are infinitely less on an external HD than an internal SSD in any consideration of data expansion needs.
    A Professional Example
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.
You should also never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your Macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’. This is especially what your external HD is for.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their notebooks internal SSD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your Macbook has a SSD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your notebook to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Slim USB3 1TB external hard drive
    External Hard Drives
External hard drives are both extremely cheap and regardless of the size of your internal SSD (or even internal hard drive if the case), you need an external hard drive with your SSD equipped Macbook for several reasons:
    1. Data backup and protection.
    2. Redundancy for important data.
    3. Necessitated ideal space for large media files for collections of pictures, videos, and music etc.
While ever changing in price, typical portable 2.5” external hard drives in USB3 run roughly $65 for 1TB or $120 for 2TB small portable USB3 hard drives. Such drives range in thickness between 5mm and 15mm, with recent improvements in storage of 500GB drives in 5mm profiles.
There is almost no premise in which a small 12mm thick 1 Terabyte USB hard drive cannot be taken along with any Macbook as an external large storage extension inside any Macbook carry case or pouch. Typically such external HD profiles are not much bigger than a deck of cards.
External hard drives are a foregone necessity for purchase with any Macbook for at the very least Time Machine backups, data redundancies, and ideally for large media storage.

  • ISCSI volume lost, have the .img file but no access to data. Help please, WD support worthless!

Basically, I have a iSCSI target which I cannot access  after re-installing windows because the CHAP "secret"  I thought I knew was wrong.  Although I was told there was no way to acess the .img file by WD, I was able to pull the image using an SSH connection to the EX2 from a hidden folder.  So now I have that file stored locally.  Of course it would just be too easy to be able to mount that file and I understand why that is.  However, through research, I am seeing that it may in fact be possible some how.   Can anyone please help me with the resources that I have?  I have alot of info that I really do not want to lose and I dont have the funds to pay a data recovery company thousands of dollars like WD support suggested.  Is the .img file encrypted or is it just a FS that windows wont recognize?  Please help and I would really appreciate any info. Thank you.

if the iSCSI target is protected with a username and password.  It would not do any good even with a linux tool to open it. Like WD tech support suggest to find a recovery company is all your best bet.  If you still have access to your NAS, you should be able to change the iSCSI target to with CHAP enable to NONE.  From your Windows try to access your iSCSI target again without a password. bda714 wrote:

  • Date cell help please...

I have a cell that adds 14 days to the date for invoicing purposes =CONCATENATE(TODAY()+14," latest")
The problem is I want the value of this cell to be based on a date that I input elsewhere on the spreadsheet and not the current date.
    Any ideas please!
    James :-}

you need not use the function concatenate() and can do the same thing like this:
    =today()+14 & "latest"
if you can to enter the date in cell B1, then the formula can be adjusted to:
    Enter in B1
    formula is in B2:
    B2=MONTH(B1+14)&"/"&DAY(B1+14)&"/"&YEAR(B1+14)& " latest"
this is shorthand for in cell B2 type (or paste) the formula "=MONTH(B1+14)&"/"&DAY(B1+14)&"/"&YEAR(B1+14)& " latest"" without the double quotes

  • Firefox won't open at all since May 4 update, yet no error message appears. Am not savvy/brave enough to test for corrupt Profile data. HELP, PLEASE!

Tried to start Firefox 3.6.16 from Desktop May 4. Instead of opening, message showed an update in progress, then a message that it could not install because two Firefox programs were running (?). After the install message closed Firefox wouldn’t open from the Desktop, the Start Menu, or the Run command. I’ve rebooted numerous times & even did a System Restore to May 3.
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox currently shows only one firefox.exe, last modified 03/23/11, and the only changes May 4 to chrome folder (6 Executable Jar Files), components folder (browser.xpt), & blocklist.xml.

Thank you very, very much for providing the simple, concise directions that solved my problem! After sorely missing Firefox 3.6.16 for a month, today I finally worked up the courage/got desperate enough to attempt (with much trepidation!) the download and re-installation.
Step 4 was a bit of a challenge, but following Uninstall directions in the 3.6.16 Release Notes advising removal through Control Panel appears to have preserved my Profile and worked fine. Was not quite sure how to go about properly removing the Firefox program folder, so I opened Local Disk (C:)/Program Files/ and deleted (to Recycle Bin) the Mozilla Firefox folder – and am keeping fingers crossed that that was the correct method.
It was quite a satisfying thrill when Firefox 3.6.17 opened, but very distressing to note that “Firefox 3.6.x will be maintained with security and stability updates for a short amount of time. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 4”. Sadly, it seems all things Internet seem to be evolving towards mobile devices, social networking, and the ability to sync all the fancy new toys – and getting much to complex for us old dogs who don’t learn new tricks easily, or need them for that matter.
    Thanks again!

  • Performa 6500 to G4 PPC data transfer help please

I now need to recover some files to my current G4 (Leopard) from my old Performa 6500/225 with ethernet but no monitor, no zip, no printer now and read-only CD. Then I will recycle the tower, kb and mouse.
If the HD is difficult to remove, should I risk having the technicians try to do it (main Apple dealer techs says they won't touch it but another Mac dealer technician says maybe-- but if it's difficult to remove, what's the risk?)
Can I easily use a converter to use my current LCD with the Performa (not sure I can locate an original monitor to use) or what other options?
I see the links on how to set up a network between the macs but is this something a novice can do easily between these systems?
I did keep my classic/OSX option open with my G4 but then upgraded to Leopard so no longer have the classic option.
    Thanks for any advice

You can use almost any monitor with the 6500, if you have a suitable adapter.
Do not let the 15-pin two-row Mac display connector scare you. It uses EXACTLY the same basic signals as the 15-pin 3-row \[aka "VGA"] connector: Red, Green, Blue intensity signals, and Horizontal and vertical Sync signals.
The difference is that the adapter must also supply some ID bits, which the Mac reads at startup to determine what display is attached.
If your existing monitor can do VGA resolutions, adapters to use a PC VGA monitor on a Mac are common. Just look at it carefully, and make sure the Mac-side of the adapter has pins, and the VGA-cable side has holes, and not the reverse.
    RE: networking
If you have Broadband Ethernet access (via DSL or Cable Modem) you have seen the Control Panels/Preferences and used the cables you need to set up a small Ethernet network. It is a little complicated, but not difficult.

  • ICloud Data Storage Guidelines

We just got this message from Apple. I'm not a developer by trade, I'm a designer, but I don't recall seeing anywhere in the CS 5.5 App development process that allowed for the level of specificity they are referring to below. Is this something that needs to be handled by Adobe or is there some place in the Apple Developer Portal that these changes can be made?
    Dear Developer,
In recent testing it appears that your app, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, stores a fair amount of data in its Documents folder.
Since iCloud backups are performed daily over Wi-Fi for each user's iOS device, it's important to ensure the best possible user experience by minimizing the amount of data being stored by your app.
In addition to purchased music, apps, books, Camera roll, and device settings, everything in your app's home directory, including its Documents folder, is backed up to iCloud.
Data stored in the application bundle itself, the caches directory, and the temp directory is not backed up to iCloud. Your app should store data in these locations according to the iCloud Data Storage Guidelines on <http://developer.apple.com/icloud/documentation/data-storage/>.
Please review these guidelines, make any required changes to your app, and submit an update to the App Store.
If you're not the technical contact for your app, please make sure this email gets to your development team.
If you have any questions concerning this information, please let me know.
    Thanks for developing for iOS!

When we release the set of tools for Newsstand (viewer builder and a VB backend that will build Newstand enabled apps), the code base you build against for Newstand enabled viewers will put the storage of folios in an Apple approved location. Currently we are in a day for day waiting period until Apple releases the GM of the iOS 5 SDK.  Once they release the SDK we will incorporate it into our system, test to insure there were no changes between the iOS SDK betas and GM and release a set of tools as soon as we are confident that viewers built on this code base will pass Apple approval.
Unfortunately I can't provide a timetable because I have no idea when the GM SDK will be released. All I can say is that we are anxiously awaiting the GM drop and are ready to move on it, the minute it is released. We understand the importance of Newsstand to our customers.
Non newstand Viewers built this version of viewer builder against the V15 DPS release will also work for iOS 4 devices and will move the storage of folios into an Apple approved location.

  • Non-existent photos taking up 2.7 GB storage space -- help please!

My iPad 3 says, under Settings\General\Usage\Storage, that I have 2.7 GB in "Photos & Camera", and specifically 2.7 GB under "Camera Roll."  I have deleted *everything* from Camera Roll manually -- there is nothing there.  Yet it still is taking up 2.7 GB of storage and preventing me from installing apps.
I tried syncing it with iTunes on the computer and telling it to remove all photos; didn't work.  I tried swiping to the right on "Camera Roll" in the Settings, which gives me the option to "Delete" -- which I click, and it does nothing (except freeze that icon so I can't swipe it anymore until I close or open settings -- let it sit for 2 hours once and it did nothing else). I've done everything but reset it to factory defaults.
I am not sure what caused it, but when I first got the iPad, I did tell it to sync a bunch of photos during initial setup.  I then realized how much room they were taking up and promptly removed them (I don't remember if I did it manually or by a re-sync).  But they are long gone, and the 2.7GB storage remains...
Can anyone help, please?  Thank you!

Restore.  Note that it's not quick.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.

I tend to make my playlists right on my ipod. This did not happen for the last 2 years. Just started recently. Did get a new computer recently.

That is because you got a new computer. You can only sync all media from one syncing computer. You can sync from any computer to iPod using the manual method but that does not sync from iPod to computer.
