Data transfer to new MacBook Pro

My MBPro fried so I pulled the HD and popped it into a USB case. Got my new 15" MBPro today and plugged in the USB cable expecting to just transfer over the works using their step-step procedure (2nd choice below) as I always do between an old and new computer, but the options are:
Transfer info from:
- another mac
- another volume on this mac
- from a time machine backup
- do not transfer
None apply to transfer from a non-time machine external HD via USB.
How do I build the new computer from the HD?

If the drive is an external enclosure attached to the MBP then it is *"another volume on this mac"*, kayakguy.
But, yes, you could also just use Migration assistant. may be preferable in some ways, in fact.
Cheers

  • Selective data transfer to new MacBook Pro?

    Hello,
I have a iMac at home and just purchased a MacBook Pro.  I want to just selectively transfer things such as some of the photos from iPhoto and some of the music from iTunes but I want to keep the MacBook "cleaner" than the iMac is, what is the best way to do a selective transfer of things?  I was planning on using a thumbdrive to transfer the files that I wanted but not sure about the photos and music.  Thanks.

    (1) Is the thumb drive big enough?
    (2) iPhoto: Select pics, File > Export, and export them to a folder on the thumb drive. File > Import to Library at the other end.
    (3) iTunes: That's trickier. Depends on whether all your stuff is in the iTunes Media folder or elsewhere, and on whether or not you have stuff purchased from iTunes Store. If all the stuff is in iTunes Media, I'd quit iTunes, duplicate to a convenient location the iTunes folder, then start iTunes with the Option key down. iTunes will ask for a library location, I'd choose the duplicate. I'd prune it to my liking, then copy the pruned duplicate to the thumb drive. Quit iTunes, launch it again with Option key down, this time choose the original, then, if all went well, delete the duplicate. At the other end, import the stuff into iTunes as usual. (I don't know what would happen to the iTunes Store purchases, 'cos I don't use it.)

  • Data transfer from 08 macbook pro that won't start up to new macbook pro?

i have a 2008 macbook pro which won't start up properly, although, it will will start up with the Ctrl+T command which to my knowledge allows it to become like an external hard drive.
my question is, which cable will i need to transfer data to my newer macbook pro that only has thunderbolt connections, and what are the limitations to the files i can move over? basically i need all my document files, iTunes files, and garage band files...

    1. You need a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
    2. All of your personal files can be moved over.

  • How do I transfer my data to my new macbook pro using an external hard drive?

I've already set up my new MacBook Pro is my issue. It asked me if I'd like to "Migrate" my stuff or use an external hard drive etc but at the time I didn't transfer my data from my old MacBook yet. I was going to manually do it later as I had to wait for my External hard drive to back my old Mac up. Now it's that time and I have no idea how to do it. I believe I've researched best of my ability.
I feel like I'm asking a pretty dumb question. If I were to just drag all my programs out like my Adobe Suite on to my new macbook pro would that work? I feel like that's just too easy and incorrect. Please and thank you.

The Adobe suite can be downloaded free, you dont have to copy it at all, under standard CS6 Adobe rules, if you own the suite, you get 2 computers "activated at any one time"  Make sure, if youre not using the older computer, you deactivate the software under the HELP menu in Adobe.
format the new drive in disk utility ......APPLICATIONS.....UTILITIES.....DISK UTILITIES.......select the external drive and format (if its new and empty!!!) under the ERASE button with Mac OSX extended journaled
copy all your important stuff from older computer , pics, files, documents, personal anything.
most of you apps, i ASSUME you bought in the (other than Adobe software, or Office suite, etc etc,..... obviously) in the MAC APP store, so you can reload them on the new computer without copying them , makes things very easy......just open APP STORE, and download what you already bought.
really the only important things , is copy all important work files, documents, pictures, personal ABC...XYZ......  obviously.
the migration is about emails, contacts, etc etc etc, also data, just because you passed it by at the time doesnt mean you still cant do it,    go to the SEARCH at menu at top and type in MIGRATION ASSISTANT  to do it again , since you passed it by at first .
the only thing you NEED / SHOULD copy is all your personal stuff........Applications need to be reinstall from either ONLINE download,.......or from the MAC APP STORE,........  you cant just copy the apps over (in most cases) and toss them onto the new computer
Nahh, there are no dumb questions, just dumb mistakes because you DIDNT ask any questions, and we all make those here and there.

  • How to transfer data to a new MacBook Pro?

My wife has a 12" Power PC G4.
    Running OS 10.5.8.
She is receiving a brand new MacBook Pro today from Apple.
How do we transfer all her "everything" from the G4  to the new computer?
    Thx,
    Steve

Avoid the "Transfer from another Mac" when you set the machine up.
If you don't have or want to set up the networking for the Internet when settingup the machine, just click the "Other Network" button until you get the "I don't have a nework" option.
Unless you want your name all over the computer and viewable to everyone on a network, I would avoid the registration screen (you can do it at Apple.com) and use a nickname in the setup.
Since the G4 PPC machine is rather old and the processor is differnet, you don't want to use "Transfer to my Mac" feature. Can't use the PPC programs on the new Intel Mac's.
Place files from the G4 onto a USB thumb drive and transfer them manually to the new machine.
If you need a Office Suit product, LibreOffice is free and cross platform, Linux, OS X and Windows, reads/writes Office files and makes PDF's too.

  • In transferring data to a new Macbook Pro it seems to have stopped making progress.

In transferring data to a a new MacBook Pro from a MacBook using migration assistant, the progress seems to have stopped (for about 3 hours) and still shows 2 hours and 16 minutes remaining. The blue progress bar looks active but hasn't moved in the last 3 hours.

There might be a problem with the directory on the old Mac.  Try verifying the old Mac's internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
Another option would be to transfer from Time Machine or "bootable clone" backups of the old Mac on an external HD.
In either event, you'll want to start over.  See the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for instructions.

  • Transfering Data to a New MacBook Pro

Getting a new MacBook Pro and want to transfer files from my older Quicksilver Desktop & Powerbook. I was told that I will need a special cable to do this with. Is that true? If so, do I need buy it from an Apple store or would Best Buy sell it?
    Thanks
    don

You will need a Firewire 800 cable which can be procured at Apple, Best buy or online at OWC or Newegg.  Also read the attached link for procedures in transferring you data:

  • Why is there no data on my new MacBook Pro after using Migration Assistant?

Last night I launched Migration Assistent between my MacBook to my MacBook Pro.  It said it would take 12 hours so I left it over night.  When it finished this morning it said that some files were not able to be transferred.  But there is absolutely nothing on my new MacBook Pro.  Why is that?
My TimeMachine backup disk has a cable that won't work with the new MacBook Pro so what other choice do I have to transfer data?

  • Time Machine transfer to new Macbook Pro

I bought a new Macbook Pro last week that I need to replace tomorrow due to slight case damage - I installed loads of applications such as Office 2008, transferred all photos etc and wondered if I do a Time Machine backup today before I return it tomorrow - can I transfer everything back over and have all applications working without having to reinstall them?
    Cheers

Yes, you'll just need to do a restore using the Install disk.

  • Microsoft office doesn't work once data transfer to new macbook

I got all my data transferred from an old macbook to a new macbook pro. Now none of my Microsoft applications will open or work. (Excel, Word)

Usually (if not always) whenever you restore MS Office apps from a backup, you'll need to use your activation key again to activate the Office suite. If you're not asked to reactivate, you may just need to re-install Office. Office just doesn't restore easily.
    Good luck,

  • Data migration to new macbook pro retina

I just migrated my imac desktop 2007 to my new macbook pro 2013 (about 250gb) and all was well.  I then decided that there may be a few photos/contacts etc on my 2008 macbook pro which were not on the desktop, and migrated that to the new computer.  Now the new retina is just like the old macbook but the previous migration cannot be found.  My hope was to merge the two and delete anything which was a duplicate (95% of photos are in common on both computers for instance, and now have two copies of most on this retina, one hidden).  When I check my memory usage the new retina has about 500gb storage used so I know BOTH computers are now on this new retina but only one is visible.  How to merge all data from both on the new retina and delete all copies to go back to about 300gb storage?
    Help is much appreciated!

  • Data Projector and new MacBook Pro 15"

I am about to take possession of a new MacBook Pro 15“
Which slot do I plug my data projector in?
I am a teacher and I use a data projector regularly but on looking at the new MBP I cannot see the usual plugs. Do I need to purchase new leads/cables?

I assume you are referring to the new unibody MacBook Pro. The unibody portables use the new mini displayport. http://www.apple.com/nz/macbookpro/features-15inch.html. Depending on your projector, you will need one of two adapters:
    Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

  • All photos in Faces gone after external hard drive transfer to new MacBook Pro

    Hello all,
I had a upto date 6 year old Macbook G4 that I regularly backed up onto a external hard drive.
I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro OS 10.8.3 with iPhoto version 9.4.3.
I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
With the following exception with iPhoto application, I have over 17,000 photos in the iPhoto library.
On opening iPhoto on my new MacBook after import all the iPhoto seems to be working ok, Places, library, folders, editing etc.
The one problem seems to be with Faces. When opening faces it loads and the individual recognised face folders are there, with perforated outline
but no photos. No phots in any individual Faces folders.
All Faces folders are greyed out, the number of each of the faces in each folder is correct with names and are again all grey out with a perforated outline.
Help and information on how to get the pictures of the photos back into the indivudual folders which are still in the Faces page but are blank.
    Thank you, signed "Faceless Faces"

I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
Exactly what did you do? With iPhoto there is no "importing" involved - you simply drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert as needed
With the following exception with iPhoto application,
You would do nothing with the iPhoto application - you use the new iPhoto application installed on yoru new system - you only move the iPhoto library as noted above
You can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • I used Migration Assistant to copy data to an new MacBook Pro from an old via my Time Capsule. When asked if to inherit time machine history on the new Mac, I mistakenly said no. How do I go back one step to say yes?

There isn't enough space on the Time Capsule to create a separate backup of the data on the new MacBook. And I am reluctant to delete old backups of the old MacBook to create space to backup the new machine. This occurred about 3 weeks ago so the data on the two machines are now out of sync. If I start over by formatting the new MacBook and rerunning Migration Assistant to pull data from the Time Capsule, how do i preserve the last 3 weeks of data on the new MacBook, considering that I didn't keep track of which files changed in the last 3 weeks?

All the rest of the stuff is where it should be.  As best I can tell. I have been going through my programs one at a time to see what works.  With the change in the OS (Launchpad? What the heck?) I am finding a significant number of my old programs are not working. Some I have found upgrades.  But without a working mail program, the machine is pretty useless for work.
The Apple techies had me run through 3 hours of 'stuff' (holding down keys and restarting, etc, etc).  It still does not launch. I think we are waiting for a 'miracle', but I need to know now if they should just come get this piece of junk or if they really are able to find a solution in a timely manner.

  • I've used a Hitachi multimedia projector with my previous MacBook with Snow Leopard but I can't get it to project data from my new MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

My new MacBook Pro with 10.8.4 does not seem to work with my Hitachi multimedia projector which works find with my older MacBook running 10.6.8. Is there anything I can do to get the projector to recognize my Mac or is it the other way around? (It would be nice to just carry one machine instead of two. Besides it's not a good advertisement for the new MacBook Pro!

Are you using the same cable and input connector with both systems?
Are you using the same (or corresponding) settings on both systems?
