Data_type in a view
Hello
I got a sql query with a column that subtracts dates and I get duration between the two dates.
But when I create a view from it, this column automatically gets the data_type as date and not as a number.
How can I change it?
Looks like there IS some type conversion when creating the view. Obviously the difference between two dates gives an undocumented data type (type 14) which is not found in dbms_types:

In user_tab_cols the data_type is 'undefined' for view columns

I'm getting the following error when I click on a view in the navigator pane:
An error was encountered performing the requested operation:
ORA-01427: single-row subquery returns more than one row 01427. 00000 - "single-row subquery returns more than one row"I'm not seeing any errors in the shell window.
After clicking on <OK> in the error dialog, the normal tabs (Columns, Data, Grants, Dependencies, Details, SQL) are displayed, but there is no content in the Columns tab.
All the other tabs seem to function normally.

Any ideas?Ok, I think I found the problem. The view in question (SUBSCRIPTIONS) is owned by 'PHILC' and it references a table named 'SUBSCRIPTIONS' owned by 'CSBCROSSWORLDS'. There are two other development schemas that also own tables named 'SUBSCRIPTIONS'.
I believe the 'Columns' tab is executing the query below. The subquery in this SQL tries to identify the primary key columns for the 'SUBSCRIPTIONS' view in my schema (PHILC):

Column definition for a specific column in a view
Is there a way to query the metadata to get the definition of a single column in a view? I can see the complete DDL for a view from USER_VIEWS.TEXT, and I can see the column listing in USER_TAB_COLUMNS to give the datatype etc. However, what I'm looking for is the DDL that defined a specific column.
So, given:

When I queried user_tab_columns (or dba_tab_columns or all_tab_columns), I have the following list of columns:
TABLE_NAME
COLUMN_NAME
DATA_TYPE
DATA_LENGTH
DATA_PRECISION

COLUMN_ID
DEFAULT_LENGTH
DATA_DEFAULT
I don't see anything resembling the DDL for the view column. Somewhere underneath some
cover I haven't peeked under, Oracle must be keeping track of what it is supposed to be giving
for, in my example, FULL_NAME.Unless I'm very much mistaken, these columns' data (per table) looks pretty much like DDL to me.
Maybe what you need is just SQL Developer (great tool, if you don't have it, get it!).
And it's free (as in beer - not as in speech! :( )
Beside the connections tab is a "Reports" tab with various, as you might expect ;), reports.
One of them is on the Tables - with (some) DDL. This will work as a once-off if that's what
you need?
Otherwise there's the SQL tab if you open a table under connections - it's very complete - sample
at bottom of post.

I am having issues trying to get the nullable attribute of a view to be "No". I created a very simple view to test, and the issue I am running into is anytime I specify a Union in the query every field in the view is set to nullable. In this very simple example I am querying 3 columns from a table, none of which are nullable. If I do not include a union then the view fields fields are not nullable as expected, however as soon as I introduce the union (even though no possiblity of null values are introduced) the columns change to being nullable. In this simple example it isn't such a big deal, but this is causing significant performance implications using LINQ to query more complex views. Any help would be much appreciated.

The purpose of TO_DATE is to convert string datatype to DATE datatype.
With Oracle characters between single quote marks are STRINGS!
'This is a string, 2009-12-31, not a date'
When a DATE datatype is desired, then use TO_DATE() function including format.
'10-11-12'

I need the "Real" Table / Table Column names from a sql view
Firstly, we have a system with ~1000 tables and ~250 views. We have field level security on the table columns (in our code)
Now we have a lot of views which select data from the tables, but I need to get the "Table Column Name" that is linked in the view.
I know there are view columns that is not linked to a specific table column, (or concatenation of columns) so those columns can just return NULL.
From the sample you will see there is a view selecting data from another view. I know it is not the best sql performance (execution path) but that is another topic on its own.
I went through a lot of the sys.* stored procs or sys.* views to try and figure out if there is a view that we can use to get the expected results.

Querying the data type of a table/view
Is there a sql statement that will 'return' the data type of a specified table/view?
For instance column x of table y has data type int, is there a statement such as:
SELECT data_type FROM y WHERE column_name = 'x'

SQL Developer: Not able to view tables
I am new to sqldeveloper and oracle products. I've recently installed sqldeveloper onto my pc, i am able to connect to the database but when i try and expand the tables item in the treeview i dont get the tables displayed and the error Warning, unhandled exception:Closed connection is shown in the logging page at the bottom. I have uninstalled the oracle client, jdk but still i keep getting this problem.

Avdanced Table Views Not Filtering
I have an issue with an advanced table's views. The filters defined for the views are not applied to the data when the view is applied.
I can save the views fine but when I open the view all the available data is listed instead of just the data that should be shown based upon the view that was saved.
I'm thinking that either the view did not save the criteria that was entered and run prior to choosing to save the view or that the view isn't applying the criteria to the VO.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Also, when choosing to create the view the shuttle for including or excluding table columns does not show up. Any thoughts as to why this is the case?

Should we use triggers to deny alter access to views?
hello all - the requirement is let a group access all the views in the schema but not be able to alter, delete views or stored procedures or functions. what is the best way to do this? thanks in advance...
It is three step process
