Data usage settings vs online?

I have a 2.0 data plan, online it says I currently used .18 but on my iPhone 5 under settings it says I've used 2.1..why don't they match? My cycle ended on the 21st and still hasnt reset under my settings but it has online..?

Tips for conserving data:
1. Use wifi when possible.
2. Do not stream on cellular!
3. Keep Videos to a minimum on cellular.
4. Turn off location services for anything unnecessary.
5. Turn off system services (location services>system services) Also turn off Frequent Location.
6. Get rid of ads in apps.
    A. Purchase ad free apps
    B. Turn on Airplane Mode or
         Turn off cellular while
          using apps with ads.
7. Limit the use of Push notifications (email, social media, etc.)
8. Use iMessage less on cellular. Switch to SMS. (If free)
NOTE: Videos are the biggest users of data on cellular.
Also, try the app Onavo Extend to compress your data.

  • Data Usage Discrepancy

    Hi everyone,
I know this is an age old tale but I'm truly baffled at this point. I just received a text from Verizon that I have, in a matter on 5 days, single-handedly exhausted 2GB of data. Lets take a step back and look at the facts:
    1) I am connected to a wifi network 8+ hours a day while at work.
    2) I have a wifi network at home that I am connected to for the majority of the time I'm not at work.
    3) I made sure that all of my apps are set to conserve data - limit push notifications, no updates unless I'm on wifi, don't automatically download email attachments, etc. All the usual suspects.
Finally, and what is most confusing to me, my phone data usage settings indicate that I have used about 0.11GB of data...
...but Verizon seems to think I've used 2.17GB of data (again, IN FIVE DAYS!).
This is over an order of magnitude in difference. I understand that my device and Verizon measure data usage a little bit differently BUT I have no idea how such a large discrepancy would occur. Moreover, I have no idea how I could possibly use over 2GB of data in a matter of a few days when I have been connected to a wifi network almost 24 hours a day. Thoughts?
    Erica

Thank you for responding.  Something is definitely wrong that's for sure.  I don't use my phone to surf the net at all during the day and when I'm home at night the little bit I do i  am using Wi-Fi. And this month the day before my  usage shifts to another month I get hit with another overage fee.  Something is wrong I have everything on my cell phone turned off so there's no data being used but yet I am over every month?   I am definitely switching over to another carrier.  Verizon is is ripping me off I can't prove it and all customer service wants to do is sell me more  data

I'm using a 16GB iPhone 4S, with the latest version of iOS 8.1.1. Whenever I go to the "Cellular" settings on the main settings page and turn OFF cellular data usage for native apps like mail, app store, contacts, photos etc , the moment I back out and come back in, all the native apps I turned cellular off for are back on again. Kindly help me

Exact same question as ankit1986, specifically with the photos while on cellular-only, and as simple as it sounds, I tried the hard reboot Ingo2711 suggested.  Still experiencing the same error with the native apps reverting to on.  It's killing our shared data-plan (2GB).

  • Data usage reported on iphone 5 differs from that online

online, it says I have only used 1 percent of my data plan (3 Gig), while my phone says I have used 0.4 G and my daughter 2.6 Gig.  WTH?   I cannot be sure of what I am using cause the phone do not seem to track the data the same way?> Help

Where are you seeing those data figures? Is it storage usage or data usage? Data usage has to be reset each billing period. Otherwise it adds up. You may be seeing several months of data usage. Reset it to 0 on the first day of your billing period each month. It's that or your looking at storage usage.

  • Is there aproblem with the settings app measuring cell data usage incorrectly?

My Settings app in my iPad (3rd gen) under General>Usage>Cellular Usage is telling me I have used 10.2 TB received and 713 GB sent. The Cellular Network Data>Usage had been only 240MB in received data just two days before. I had not used the iPad in two days. It was sleeping and not shut off. My battery level also had only changed a few percent. My Verizon account is still showing the correct 240 MB received. Is it possible for the iPad to continuously access cellular data while asleep? Could this be a problem with the Settings app? Could this be from location services? I had the Map open, but it had been closed. It was still showing in the background apps witht a double touch of the start button.

Thanks SergZak. My iPad has only been active for about two weeks. I don't see how it could have accumulated such an astronomically high number. I found one other thread from April that showed the same problem with  a number of other users (New iPad shows incorrect cellular data usage statistics?). I am hoping that Apple is aware of this and working on a correction. Although upon checking my Verizon account the numbers were accurate to true usage, I am concerned that incorrect accumulation of statistics could lead to overcharges. If I had actually used 10 TB (10,000 GB) of data at $10 per GB over my allotmet of 2 GB, I would have owed Verizon $98,000.

  • HT201320 data usage for pop3 or exchange email settings

what email type uses the least amount of data on the iphone 5 pop3 or microsoft exchange ?
phone checks for emails every hour.
only have 1gb data usage per month.

You could try disabling IMAP on your email client website and then adding a POP account for your email on your phone. I know GMAIL allows you to disable IMAP on the website.

  • Droid2 data usage jumps from zip to 100's of MB a week

After seeing similar threads with sudden and unexplained data usage, I want to share my problem with one possible SOLUTION!
I was alerted that my account was going over the 150mb limit. I checked online my usage and saw nothing, the usual flat line at zero mb. I assumed it was another sales attempt to get me to up my data service. I rarely even use the internet on my phone (maybe price check at the store) as I always have a laptop or a customer’s fast internet available. BTW - I am an independent IT consultant, MCSE, Novell CNE, HP/Compaq Engineer, and COMPTIA Security Specialist. I admit the phone is a different monster for me. I get a bill with $30 extra charge and go back online (details) to see that my phone started "using" data at up to 144MB at a clip near the end of the billing cycle. I have the 150mb plan. Ouch!!! Now with the new billing cycle, I am on target to hit 3 GB and $400 plus monthly phone bill. I triple checked my settings. Everything is turned off, zero apps (except what came with the phone) are installed. I went to the local Verizon store. They said to turn on my wireless settings and up my data plan to 2 or 3 GB. What??? I don't use the data plan, it was required  with that phone. The usage did decrease with wireless turned on, as it was using my clients Internet and my limited satellite (rural) internet. But my phone was still using over 300mg per month average. In the previous week it already racked up 750 mb, with 3 more weeks left on the billing cycle! I felt like I left my credit card in the Verizon 24 hour ATM machine!
SOLUTION: Last night, I went to a 3rd party Verizon store where they really try to gain your business (commission based?). Immediately the rep saw that the phone was using the internet and NOTHING was running. 3G was staying on.  Phone was up to date, no apps running, nothing. A call to Verizon and 10 minutes later a hard reset (read lose any all not backed up settings) and the phone calmed down. The bogus data charges have seemed to go away overnight.
Was the phone defective? The software hosed? Why would Verizon not readily know about this symptom?
Question to Verizon: After reading tons of complaints from customers with similar complaints.....
Given that in the last 27 months of owning this phone and hardly ever using any data, and being a Verizon customer for 8 or more years.....Are you going to remove the excess data charges from my bill without a fight?

Answer: possibly, but you will have to contact CS. This is a peer-to-peer forum and you will not necessarily even hear from Verizon on these boards.

  • How can I reduce excessive data usage?

My wife and I recently moved to the country and have no internet available by a physical cable or wire from an ISP.    Our internet service is provided through a Verizon Jetpack that we lease from Verizon.    We have an iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s, an iPad 1, and an iPad 2 (both iPads are WiFi only)
Our problem is excessive data usage.  Prior to our move, our iPhones each used approx .2GB per month.   16 days into our current billing month, the iPhones have each used approx 1.2GB, but our Jetpack (which creates our home WiFi for our iPads) has already used 10GB.  We do not stream anything on our iPads.  We use them in the evening for surfing the internet, checking Facebook, and playing Words With Friends.  That's about it. The Verizon online data calculator indicates we shoud be using about 4GB per month based on our iPad usage.   Yet my data usage log says that one night this week between 7:30 PM and 11:30 PM, our Jetpack used a full 1GB.  Is it possible that our Jetpack is simply "burning up" GBs while we sleep?

On my iPhone 4 running iOS 6,  Settings > General > Usage quotes the installed size of the apps not the data usage. I've just installed the Onavo Count which claims to record data usage of each app so one can see which the greedy ones are.

  • A few questions on upgrade fee, overage charge on prorated bill, and data usage when phone is on WiFi

1st question, I bought 2 iPhone 4s's Dec 2011, unlimited plan which was up Dec 2013. April 19 2014, I bought 2 iPhones, 1 5c, 1 5s with the more of everything plan, which is not more of everything, it's far less then my old plan, but whatever. I got charged a total of $60 for a $30 upgrade on each phone. I'm not upgrading, my plan was expired, I bought 2 new phones and was forced into a new plan in order to get new phones, how is this an upgrade? Never been charged in all these years(early 2000's I became a customer) of being a loyal Verizon customer of an upgrade fee, unless I was upgrading my phone before the contract was done. If I was a brand new customer to Verizon would I get charged this upgrade fee?
2nd question, my bill cycle runs from the 24th to the 23rd, since I bought these new phones on the 19th, there were 5 days left to the billing cycle, so they prorated old plan and new plan. New plan is 1 GB, 5 days were prorated, I used in those 5 days between the 2 phones 371.77 MB, and I'm being charged for an overage of 206.61 MB of $15. Now my plan gives me 1 GB a month, that would be 1024 MB, I didn't go over this 1 GB in the month, so why am I being charged an overage for 5 lousy days?
3rd question, really 5 days and I used 371.77 MB's of data? Strange, didn't get the new phones until after 6pm on April 19th, yet I have all kinds of data charges on that day, when both phones were in my home, connected to WiFi the entire day. I spent the entire day online jerking around with 2 different Verizon employee's over getting new phones and a new plan in my home, on my computer, never touched my phone the whole day. Couldn't the day before I smashed the screen beyond use. So how on earth did I have all these data charges on that day? Now I could understand if I had, had the new phones earlier in the day, because there seems to be some strange glitch with these iPhone 5's were you use data, even when your phone is connected in your home to WiFi, but these were the 4s phones during the times of these data charges..
I'm not happy at all, first I got jerked around by 2 different Verizon employee's online, every option I tried they had some stupid reason why I could not do that and that I had to go with 1 option, I got so fed up, I didn't process my order online. I then turned around and went over to Sprint and spent time online with a Sprint employee, where I did not get jerked around, where I could have placed my order and then went to the store and picked up my phones right then. But no I was foolish, long time Verizon customer, happy with Verizon until this day, so I got in my car, drove to a store and spent an hour doing the whole process over with a nice friendly store employee(not a Verizon store). Now I get these upgrade fees, overage fee for 5 days of data service, where I was not over my monthly 1 GB, and all kinds of data charges appearing in the 5 days of the bill cycle on these new phones. Might not be much strange added on data to some, but in 2 years 4 months of the 4s iPhones, never used more then 1 GB a month and now so far I will exceed that 1 GB in this new billing cycle and by at least 1 GB, it would be 2 GB's except I shut one phone completely down and the other one is down to bare minimum, when nothing has changed in the way we are using our phones, and we are not using more data. I have now completely shut my phones cellular data off, I've turned it on in this billing cycle 6 times, bare minimum of only when I absolutely have to. The other phone, I can't do that with, and that phone is going through double, possibly triple the amount of data then the 4s, same user on both phones. I do now shut the cellular off of that phone when it comes into the house and it's not turned back on until it's out my door, so I will see if these strange data charges stop for when the phone is in the home hooked to WiFi. On top of that, I have shut down every app on that phone that is needed when WiFi can't be accessed, cellular is turned off except for 2 or 3 things. This is a bunch of garbage, I have 2 smartphones, and I have to shut them down and turn them into nothing but a normal old phone. What the heck is going on with this?

I will try to address your concerns - and explain why things are as they are ... you may not like the explanation but hopefully it will help you understand what has happened and what you can do moving forward.
I got charged a total of $60 for a $30 upgrade on each phone. I'm not upgrading, my plan was expired ...  If I was a brand new customer to Verizon would I get charged this upgrade fee?
Verizon's definition of "upgrade" is purchasing phone at a discount and agreeing to a new contract - if you are a brand new customer, you pay a $35 activation fee.  If you are an existing customer, you pay a $30 upgrade fee - this has been in place for about 2 years now.
You only had the new plan for 5 days - pro-rating means you get about 34 MB per day, or about 170 MB for those 5 days.  If you used 371, that a 200 MB overage.  You likely were only charged for 5 days of the new plan as well...
...  I have shut down every app on that phone that is needed when WiFi can't be accessed, cellular is turned off except for 2 or 3 things. This is a bunch of garbage, I have 2 smartphones, and I have to shut them down and turn them into nothing but a normal old phone. What the heck is going on with this?
My daughter recently upgraded from her iPhone 4 to a 5c - her data spiked and she used nearly 1 GB in the first week where that was about what she uses an entire billing cycle.  We went through all her data settings and discovered she had about 10-12 apps (Facebook, Instagram, etc) that were updating all the time, connected to wifi or not.  She shut most of those off and will open the app and update manually when she is on wifi.  She downloaded and is using Onavo to manage her data and understand what gets used and when.  I hope we have it under control, but the defaults on the iPhone 5 seem to turn on everything to update constantly, and that's just not a good thing.
It does seem the iPhone 5 series takes more work than any phone I've ever used to keep data usage manageable.

  • IPhone 5 - Excessive data usage and data "bleed"

We recently upgraded my daughter's phone from a Samsung to an iPhone 5, originally running iOS 6, now running iOS 7.  The Samsung (Android) phone used less than .5 MB per month, whereas the iPhone 5 will consume that much data in one day.  About 80% of the phone's usage is on WiFi, and is only actively used on the cellular network less than an hour a day.  However, the phone and the Verizon data usage log show data being consumed even when connected continously to wifi.
With help from a Verizon representative, we turned off location services, closed all background apps and stopped automatic updates and refreshes, shut off icloud, email, and anything else that could possibly be running in the background or consuming data.  The changes didn't do anything to slow the usage, and the Verizon reps suggested that my daughter was secretly using her phone in the middle of the night to play games and watch movies. At Verizon's recommendation, we signed up for parental controls, and set them to prevent the phone from being used during the school day, and at night.  However, the phone and Verizon continue to show data use in tiny increments 24 hours per day.  These post in the Verizon data usage logs about every 10 minutes, and are typically 10-20KB.
Using the parental controls, I set a hard data stop each week so that we could meter her data out over a month's time and prevent overages.  It is supposed to stop all data usage on the phone once she reaches a preset limit.  She would usually hit the 1GB limit in a day or two, but the phone and Verizon's data usage log show that the phone continues to bleed data 24 hours per day even after the limit is reached and she is unable to use her phone.  Verizon can offer no explanation.
In addition to the data bleed, the actual data usage for virtually any activity that required data is substantially higher than what I would see for the same use on my iPhone 4s.  For example, a couple of youtube videos played on her iPhone 5 resulted in 0.8GB being used in just a few minutes, vs about 50MB on my 4s for the same videos.  Verizon seems to suggest that this is due to the higher resolution and speed, but it seems excessive.
Here's a Youtube video I found that seems to show our exact issue.  We've done similar tests on our phone, with the same results.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9AR2rEFcKk
Although it is frequently suggested that the "fix" for this problem is to turn off cellular, that hardly addresses the problem.  It would also mean we have purchased a very expensive iPod.
Is there anyone who can help us address this issue?  Verizon has been no help, and does not acknowledge this as an ongoing problem, despite the fact that there are countless articles, blogs, and videos online about the very same issue.  We have tried a number of the "fix" recommendations we've found online, but thus far have had no success.

There's something wrong. Have you tried the 4 Rs basic troubleshooting steps?
    Restart:
    1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
    2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data

  • Phone data usage not matching verizon usage

Since having my droid turbo, my data usage in my setting has not been matching my usage on my verizon account and another line on my account is having the same issue, right now my phone says that i have used 0.56GB and verizon says i have used 1.03 which is a pretty big difference, the other line on my account that is having the same issue says he has used 0.69 verizon says he has used 2.421 which is a huge difference, i checked the wifi usage for both phones and it seems that the top the data app under wifi usage seem to be making up the difference between the usage in settings and the usage on verizon. I have also seen people online talking about this similar issue which seems to be caused by the phone using mobile data while connected to wifi.  I have been with verizon for over 2 yrs and this is the first phone i have noticed this issue with.  I have also attached screen shots from my phone to prove this issue.  Any help with this problem would be appreciated.

If you want to see the report from VZW on your current data usage then you must sign into the VZW website and access your account.  Only the VZW website will allow you to see any kind of information on your data usage.  The Jetpack itself does not have any data usage metrics installed on it.
I assume that you already know that the data usage report from VZW is only a summary of your actual usage in terms of various sessions.  The most information that will be disclosed to you are these sessions, their timestamps and how much data was consumed during that session.  If you want the actual statistics for what was consumed then you must setup and maintain your own data usage monitor.

  • Phone data usage info vs ATT data usage info

I have a 200 MB data plan so I watch very carefully my data usage. The problem I have is that I get different information depending on where I look. I have 3 different sources:
    - iPhone seetings -> Cellular data usage: 6 MB sent / 45 MB received
    - AT&T's website (myATT): ~36 MB of data used
    - Data Usage Pro app (from the AppStore): ~36 MB of data used
Which one is the most reliable? Obviously the last 2 sources match, but then why do I get a much higher amount when I look in the phone settings? I got the phone (iPhone 4s) about 1 week ago, with a new AT&T line, so I assume everything was reset when I started to use it...
What source should I trust? Why so much difference?
    Thanks for any tips!

items downloaded on your computer internet connection will not affect the usage on your iphone data plan.  howver if the applications you downloded have an online componant then that would affect your data plan.

  • View Individual Device Data Usage on Shared Plan

Hello, I was recently given a smart phone on my employer's plan (I previously had a regular phone, so did not incur data usage charges). I can view the overall plan's data usage on my phone, using the Verizon app, but I can't see where to view my individual device's data use. I created a Verizon account here on the web, and using the online tools here I can see my individual use, but I would like to do so on my phone.
I can use my phone's settings to see what it says my data use is (which just about matches what Verizon says) but I would rather have the Verizon totals shown on my phone, just to be sure what the actual data being billed is.

I know keeping tabs on your data usage is important Felderburg. If you are a user on a company account, you may not have the full access to My Verizon Mobile. You would typically be able to see the individual line usage by clicking the "shared data" option under the usage estimate total. I'm pleased you have been able to gain this information online via your computer. As an additional option on the phone if you don't have full access, you can dial #DATA.

  • What is "Data Usage"

I have a Samsung Stratosphere. My plan allows 4 gb. of usage monthly. For the first time in over two years of owning this phone, my Data usage has gone over 1 gb. what exactly is considered "Data Usage" and how can I manage it?

Data usage takes place when you use your phone for visiting Web sites, emails, apps like Facebook or Instagram when you are not connected to wifi. You Can Manage it By in settings Under data usage and limit mobile data usage and set limits with the graph.  Or by simply watch what you are doing when you're not on wifi don't stream audio or video as much. You can also add family base feature for $5/ month which let's you make hard stop on mobile data at 4G for example and you mange that from your my Verizon online via a control panel. It's free for 3 months on a more everything plan also.  Hope this helps

  • How to remove a data usage alert email address

I receive email alerts when my data usage gets to 75%, 90%, and 100% of usage. How do I remove one of the email addresses these alerts are being sent to (it is not one of my email addresses)?

    Verizon_Dan
I understand your desire to update which email addresses receive the data usage alerts.  I would love to assist.
When you log into your My Verizon account online, you can edit your alert settings (email addresses and phone numbers) within the "Manage My Account" section of your online account.  Under the "Manage My Account" tab on the left, click the "Manage Family Safeguards & Controls" link.  Then, under the "Usage Controls" tab, click "View Details & Edit".  Lastly, under the "Usage Limits" tab you will then be able to edit the email addresses that you want to receive email alerts.  Please let me know how this works out for you.
