Data "usage" spike in July. Unexplainable?

Have only been with Comcast since February. At this point, I really need some love to make it worth staying. June usage 87gb.July usage so far 331gb. 300gb notice last week, and 30gb used in just a few days. ???Bonus: We were gone July 3-July 14. Somehow I am to believe that we have used 4x the data in July, after only being here half the time?  Wifi is secured.  Customer service phone lines were closed. Chat service was only there to console me, not help.   Any ideas?

I spent 2 hours on the phone with customer service including the assurance department yesterday.
All I got out of it was for them to tell me to try changing my wifi password and call back in 24 hours.
Half of our equipment is wired- not wifi, so not sure if it will do much, but my husband did change everything yesterday. Even if someone else was using our internet it would have been difficult to imagine it more than causing our usage to more than triple. Especially with our travel schedule. June was the month we were all home and probably used the most, but no one can seem to tell us what our may and April usage was...
We are now at 346 gb. So we've used 6 since yesterday supposedly. Still seems fishy. Yet I can tell you I do not look forward to another hour or more of my day being wasted on the phone today.

  • Data usage spikes

I have an iMac and an Airbook, both using Time Capsule for WiFi connection to a Verizon 551L via a CradlePoint bridge.  Looking at my normal data usage on my shared plan, my computers and three iPhone 4 (3G) cell phones typically use 250MB/day with normal browsing, e-mail, etc.  I have automatic downloading of updates turned off on all of my devices and I set them to power down at night and sleep during the day if I don't use them for 30-minutes.  When I download iTunes albums, add an app, or update software, my usage will spike to 1-2GB, but I usually stay within my 16GB data plan. When I updated both computers to Mavericks in November, I really paid for that one, using nearly 30GB that month but hey, that was my fault.  But January has been unusual.  Eight days into the current billing period, I had used 5GB of my plan and on day 9, I had a 2.3GB spike at 4AM (My hardware and I were asleep).  Just after noon on the same day, (while I was at work and not using my hardware) I received two data alerts on my company computer; one at 12:10PM (75%) and one at 1:23PM (90%).  I live in a rural area where my nearest neighbor is out of range of my WiFi network and even if they could get through my firewall, access settings, and password restrictions, the data rate required to create those two alerts would have been (at a minimum) 2.4GB/73m or 6mbps.  That's uninterrupted streaming for 73-minutes!  Sorry, that's out-of-family performance, even for 4G LTE.  I'm almost certain that this is a problem with Verizon's usage monitoring and not representative of my actual usage.  I see a lot of posts about this same issue, so there must be something going on.  I understand Verizon not being too anxious to resolve it because it's very profitable.

    Good day
I heard to learn this the hard way when I got my Z10 & Q10 has the newer OS does not do data compression!
Do you have any apps running in the background? refreshing?
I got app to monitor my usage it was only was $0.99 I got Instagram sideloaded and that was my main source of data being used!
This is the app I'm using

  • Unexplained Verizon Data Usage on Iphone 5s

I have data usage charges showing up on my Iphone 5s every day at 5:40am Eastern time.  The problem is that my phone is not being used at that time of day and is always connected to WiFi while I am home.  The data usage has been very large, from 60mb all the way up to 100mb.  I see that others have posted similar concerns so I'm throwing my voice in here saying that this is not our imagination, it is happening and killing out data usage.
Here is a screen grab of my data usage.  As you can see, every day at 5:40am, there is a large spike in usage.  My phone is not in use at that time:
There must be an explanation and resolution for this.

        Hi KingPumpkin,
We always want your charges to be accurate! Smartphones are now able to tell you what applications are using your data. Please go to cellular>use cellualr data for>and this list tells you what data was billed to your cellular data. You could screen shot this list when your done using the phone in the evening. Then compare the screenshot in the morning to see what application data has changed. Data overages can sometime be billed in delay. Your device is set to pick up the strongest signal on the device, so if the Wi-fi server is weak or reboots at 5:40am every morning, then the device will quickly switch to back the Verizon Wireless network until the Wi-fi server comes back up. You could also eliminate these charges by turning off the cellular data every night since the device is connected to Wi-fi.
    Thanks,

  • Any way to determine which app is causing a spike in my data usage, I've gone over my monthly limit?

In 2 separate 2 hour periods, my phone went through 500MB of data each period - pushing me close to my monthly limit on Verizon. I turned off Cellular Data completely, and have been trying to figure out what app is doing it.  It seems to be something that happens quite suddenly, as I've noticed that the phone gets really hot.  And no, I'm not streaming video, I don't have iTunes match, or any of those obvious issues.
So, I've downloaded Dataman, My Data Manager, and Onavo, but unfortunately, none of them allow you to see which apps are doing the data hogging. My Data Manager does allow me to see data usage on WiFi (the other 2 don't, assuming that all you care about is cellular data)....and it at least confirmed for me what I thought.....After a day of minimal data use, I suddenly had a spike of almost 20GB of data use in 1 hour.  Yes, you heard it 20GB!!!!  It's as if my entire iTunes music library was being downloaded (and no I don't have iTunes wifi sync enabled, and besides, I had just previously synced via USB, so there was nothing new to sync).
My guess is this is related to this:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/oct/17/iphone-5-iphone
Apple needs to figure this out -- Verizone needs to compensate all of us --
But in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas on how to figure out what apps/services are using the data?

        GV2,
I'm glad Mrhelper was able to shed some light on this for you! In iPhones, the amount of data you're seeing under each app is for the "Current Period." Just above that list you'll see info about the Current Period and Current Period Roaming. This is just an overall snapshot of total data usage for that period of time. The Current Period does not reset on its own, so it will be counting everything from the last time you reset it through now. You can reset it by scrolling to the bottom and tapping on "Reset Statistics."
So, for example, if you reset your statistics 3 days ago and then there's 1GB used under App Store you'll know that over the last 3 days 1 GB of data has been used for the App Store.

  • Unexplained Data Usage While iPhone is Not in Use

I have been a loyal customer to Verizon for 4 years. I had an iPhone 4S until Sept. 23rd, when I purchased an iPhone 6 Plus. Prior-to the swap, I received a data usage notification, saying I was at about 90%, on Sept. 19th. This was one day before my billing cycle restarted, so I ignored it. Now, I've had no change in use, no change in WiFi connectivity at home or work (which have been the same at both locations for 5 years), and in less than 2 weeks, I have, for the first time ever, gone .2 GB over my 2GB monthly allowance.
When I went into My Verizon to review the list of times/amounts of data use, I found something that neither Verizon, nor my common sense could explain, and the short of the response I received after 45 minutes on the phone was "we'll submit a billing review request." I don't care about the extra $10 or so for going over. I care for the following bullet-points:
    1. I am OCD; I close every app I use directly following use
    2. I have Background App Data shut off
    3. My email does not have anything stuck in "Outbox" or "Sent" in either my Exchange or Gmail accounts
    4. Nothing has changed relative to phone usage in the last 4 years
    5. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT: These data spike are occurring at between 5:22am and 6:30am, before I'm even awake on weekdays, AT HOME, connected to my wireless router. The router is fine, and the phone works perfectly, as well as my router at work.
I'm also a back-end networking engineer. None of this makes sense.
Spikes from 70mb - (and in one instance) 250 mb while the phone is not in use, and connected to my home Wifi.
Additionally, one suggestion from Verizon rep "Jason" was to bring the phone to Apple, because there may be a problem with it.
Someone, anyone, please get me some answers on this. Right now, it seems like neither Verizon nor myself can detail the data use, and I simply don't want to deal with this headache every month.
I feel like Verizon is scamming me..

MichelleH_VZW - you responded to a commenter on my post, but not to the actual post. There was no help in that response. Any chance you can read above and give some insight?
I know what the dates and time are from looking at the rundown in My Verizon, and the peak data spikes (as noted above; 70-250 mb in a quick/brief timeframe) are during times when my phone is not in use (5:22am - 6:30am on weekdays, while I'm still asleep), when connected to my home wifi, and all apps are closed (no background app data is used as I have that shut off).
It would be awesome to have some restored faith in you guys, here..

  • Spike in Data Usage

    Hi
Since updating both my 4S iphones to 5, I've had a huge spike in data usage on ATT.
    My habits haven't changed.
How can I try to determine what is causing the data consumption?  I am getting data over use alerts constantly, even when I am not doing anything on my phone.
Been trying to get help from ATT.
Are there specific features that are culprit for consuming data?
    Thanks
    AS

        Hi Ostaters5,
Data overages are no good! I’m going to show you a way to look at your data usage more closely. Most devices provide information in the settings with Data Monitors, and they’ll give you a much clearer picture. Allow me to walk you through it. Go to settings>cellular>scroll down to use celluar data for:> Please list the applications with the highest GB/MB in order. This will let us know what is using your billed data. You can turn off cellular data, and turn on the option to use the application only on Wi-fi in this same screen.
    Thanks,

  • Has anyone else seen a spike in their data usage for no reason?

Anyone else seeing random really large data spikes in their usage summary?
I've had my iPhone 5 for over a year now and I've never even come close to using my data (or texts and calls for that matter).
Now all of a sudden, I got a text yesterday (5/1/14) telling me that I'm at 70% of my allotted data. Then today, I got another text telling me that I'm at 90%. That prompted me to turn off my cellular Data - and to look into my usage.
After I looked at my data usage, I saw that there were a lot of spikes in data usage ranging anywhere from 250MB to 400MB on a single day! And then when I looked more closely, I saw that these data spikes were at times when I'm sitting at home - where my phone would be on Wi-Fi!
I called customer support and the CSR was NOT helpful. She flat out lied to me and tried to say that I used 3 gigs in February and that I'm averaging 2 gigs a month! I looked up my past usage charts and she was WRONG.
She then went on to tell me that Verizon will STILL charge us on data usage EVEN IF our phones are connected to our own High Speed Internet connection! She explained that the phone will pick the faster service... Really? She's really going to tell me that 4G LTE is faster than my ISP? Wow...
I'm documenting this now so that if I see these spikes in the future, I WILL REPORT Verizon to the FCC and I hope that those of you who are having similar problems on your data billing [will do the same].

        MichaelKi77,
Data charges can be quite shocking, let's get to the bottom of this to make sure we can help you prevent overages in the future. Have you downloaded any new applications? Please go to Settings>Cellular>Scroll down to see which apps use data. Then, scroll all the way down to System Services to view all data usage.

  • Unexplained data usage

Hi, I have been on the 3.5GB monthly data plan for a number of months now, and have consistently only averaged usage of approx half of that data each month. Nothing data heavy, I usually use my phone to check emails, whatsapp and surf the net. This morning I received a notification from Telstra that my data usage is 50% with eight days to go which appeared normal. But at about 4pm I received another message from Telstra that my data usage has reached 85% or approx usage of over 1GB in just 8 hours. I have hardly used my phone in that time. It's now 7:45pm and I have just checked the Telstra 24x7 app and it shows my data usage allowance as 0% remaining. I'm quite concerned and am not sure where the data is draining to. Can someone please advice?

Hi Puimum, OK, the series of tips in the link below was specific to iPhone 6. I emphasise the need to chech what is using data, tap: Settings>, Cellular>, scroll right to the bottom of that page and tap System Services>. This will reveal the specific applications using data in descending order.
The tips in the link below go into more detail
I would also look at any Aut Backup settings under Settings>, iCloud. Check that this is off, otherwise everything you do could be being backed up to iCloud. (This is another lengthy topic - yell out if you need help with it)

  • Serious unexplained data usages

I not sure what's going on but I keep getting my connection dropped and my data usages went from 4 percent to close if not 10 percent in several days and I even took my battery so I wouldn't go over my limit and it's still climbing. Also I can't sign in to the community.  It says invalid  but I've redone it so many times so I no its right.
    PEGGY THOMPSON

What phone? Did you look to see what app is using data? Did you reboot the phone?
Each day is 3.3% of a month, so your trajectory would not be to run out of data if you are increasing from 4% to 10% over 2 days or more (4% + 3.3% + 3.3%= 10.6%)

  • Is there an easy way to know which app(s) are causing spike in Data Usage?

I have an iphone 4, but son and daughter have iphone 5s and my wife a lumina.  We all spiked in data usage last month, how do we determine what caused this?  Was it Facebook or Pandora?  Some other app? There must be an easy way to find out. Please advise.  Thanks!

  • Unexplained High Data Usage

Hi, I am on day 1 of my monthly plan and at 10am this morning I received a text saying I had used 50% of my data. I then received another text at 11:30 am saying I had used 85%. I am connected to Wi-Fi both at home and at work and was at work between 10 - 11:30 am today. My average usage is less than 50% a month, I also havn't I been using my phone much this morning. Is there a glitch in the system somewhere? thanks

Hello Meg,There are a multitiude of settings in Apple phones that can be disabled to reduce data usage. The very next thing I would do is turn off Mobile Data until you resolve the issue. If you disable background data,  go through your usage and you will see where your data is being used.Make sure you are logged out of Facebook.I would ring Apple support on 1300 321 456 and they can walk you through an absolute multitude of settings that can reduce data. When you ring them, you get Level 1 support in Queensland who only provide very basic support.  Please  ask/insist on being switched through to a Level 2 technician, as these folk really know their stuff. Thanks

  • Excessive & unexplained pre-paid data usage

My prepaid mobile broadband which I use on my home computer -After re-charging with the new deal - 16GB for 730 days - all I have left now is 5.99GB - after only 2 months!!There is no obvious reason for this, I now spend minimal time online, checking emails, internet banking, check Fb & that's it. I don't download music or movies, to afraid to watch any Youtube.  Once/twice a week I make calls via Skype - max time 15mins.I have password protection on my modem, I have set my windows downloading/installing to manual.  I have set my antivirus protection to "economy" - which was recommended to save chewing thru my data usage. I now wonder what's next to do????  Up until 6 months ago, this problem did not exist - I was able to complete 18mths of study, using the internet daily & doing massive research, downloading etc, then all has gone pearshaped!!! If anyone can provide advice - it would be much appreciated, thank you.

I have had exactly the same problem. Logged in on sunday to check emails and it took 1959Mb of my data and shut down my account. Reported it, still waiting. Went in to my local Telstra store and they phoned help (overseas) for me. They did not even have my current address so I could verify who I was. Afet half an hour I eventually got put back to an operator who asked me if I wanted to pay my account that was paid a week ago. If there were awards for disgusting customer service nobody would come near Telstra. In 2015 I have been without internet for 2 days now.

  • Droid2 data usage jumps from zip to 100's of MB a week

After seeing similar threads with sudden and unexplained data usage, I want to share my problem with one possible SOLUTION!
I was alerted that my account was going over the 150mb limit. I checked online my usage and saw nothing, the usual flat line at zero mb. I assumed it was another sales attempt to get me to up my data service. I rarely even use the internet on my phone (maybe price check at the store) as I always have a laptop or a customer’s fast internet available. BTW - I am an independent IT consultant, MCSE, Novell CNE, HP/Compaq Engineer, and COMPTIA Security Specialist. I admit the phone is a different monster for me. I get a bill with $30 extra charge and go back online (details) to see that my phone started "using" data at up to 144MB at a clip near the end of the billing cycle. I have the 150mb plan. Ouch!!! Now with the new billing cycle, I am on target to hit 3 GB and $400 plus monthly phone bill. I triple checked my settings. Everything is turned off, zero apps (except what came with the phone) are installed. I went to the local Verizon store. They said to turn on my wireless settings and up my data plan to 2 or 3 GB. What??? I don't use the data plan, it was required  with that phone. The usage did decrease with wireless turned on, as it was using my clients Internet and my limited satellite (rural) internet. But my phone was still using over 300mg per month average. In the previous week it already racked up 750 mb, with 3 more weeks left on the billing cycle! I felt like I left my credit card in the Verizon 24 hour ATM machine!
SOLUTION: Last night, I went to a 3rd party Verizon store where they really try to gain your business (commission based?). Immediately the rep saw that the phone was using the internet and NOTHING was running. 3G was staying on.  Phone was up to date, no apps running, nothing. A call to Verizon and 10 minutes later a hard reset (read lose any all not backed up settings) and the phone calmed down. The bogus data charges have seemed to go away overnight.
Was the phone defective? The software hosed? Why would Verizon not readily know about this symptom?
Question to Verizon: After reading tons of complaints from customers with similar complaints.....
Given that in the last 27 months of owning this phone and hardly ever using any data, and being a Verizon customer for 8 or more years.....Are you going to remove the excess data charges from my bill without a fight?

Answer: possibly, but you will have to contact CS. This is a peer-to-peer forum and you will not necessarily even hear from Verizon on these boards.

  • Unlimited Data Usage??

I have a very basic question. I have Comcast (up to 35Mb/s down). I am a very heavy user. Earlier this month, I was contacted by Comcast and advised that I exceeded my data usage for the month. Data usage?? What data usage? Come to find out that, regardless of the tier one is on, the limit is 250GB/month. In July, I used 1.6TBs. I am looking for an alternative. I have read, only from external forums dated from late 2008/early 2009, that Verizon does not cap. Can someone please either confirm or dispute this? If someone can point me to a specific statement in Verizon's contract or policies stating one way or another that would be even better. If not, a definitive response one way or another would suffice. Thanks

Many residential ISP's are implementing usage caps to protect their customer base from individual users who unduly burden the backbone networks with disproportionate amounts of data traffic and as a result degrade the overall performance of the network for everyone.  250GB is a LOT of information for traditional residential user connection -- particular since you are explicitly prohibited from running any kind of "server" based connection.
With that said, I am not aware of any communicated limit from Verizon although atypical usage is certain to gather someone's attention, I suspect.   To which I refer you to the Terms of Service agreement:
Restrictions on Use. The Service is a consumer grade service and is not designed for or intended to be used for any commercial purpose. You may not resell the Service, use it for high volume purposes, or engage in similar activities that constitute such use (commercial or non-commercial). If you subscribe to a Broadband Service, you may connect multiple computers/devices within a single home to your modem and/or router to access the Service, but only through a single Verizon-issued IP address. You also may not exceed the bandwidth usage limitations that Verizon may establish from time to time for the Service, or use the Service to host any type of server. Violation of this section may result in bandwidth restrictions on your Service or suspension or termination of your Service.
In short, if they see a problem, they can enact a bandwidth usage limitation and can take the remedies outlined therein.  YMMV.

  • Any way to get a history (detailed) of data usage on 3G?

    Hi all.
I'm in Canada, have a 3G iPad and had a 250MB data plan with Rogers. That 30-day plan went from June 2 to July 2.
This being the first month, I monitored data usage fairly closely and was surprised at how slowly my data balance was going down, throughout the month.
However, my balance apparently went from 20 MB yesterday to 0 MB this morning, although I didn't use the 3G network yesterday (I was at home and hardly used the iPad which was connected via WiFi anyway).
When I asked Rogers if there was a way to get a detailed history, their rep seemed confused and said to look on the iPad; of course, the iPad only gives the balance, not the history.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get the history (such as is available on Skype, for instance)?
    Thanks!

Can't you access such a history online via rogers.com?
I'm using a Rogers Pay-as-you-go: A detailed Call/Data/Text history is accessible through my Rogers online account.
