Data usage when wifi is present and on

Blew through ! GB of data this weekend even with wifi up and running.  Verizon is my carrier.  44 mins on with reps this AM.  Finally said they were told that this is a glitch in Verizon. Told me to turn the data button off when I was in Wifi range.  No idea when this was going to be fixed.  Said to "call back in a two weeks or a month" to see if they had fixed the problem.  Risable!  Anyone else with this issue?
Bill in Albuquerque

For over a year I never used more than 4 gigs of data in a month on my ipad. Suddenly the Verizon LTE is overiding my wifi at home. Verizon doesn't seem to have an answer for the problem but did reduce my overage making me think that they know that there is a problem on their end. It is a pain now to have to remember to turn on data everytime I leave the house. I bought the product to be seamless, not to have to make adjustments for every situation.

  • How can you manage data usage when cellular data is off, but you are using WiFi where your WiFi provider charges for data use?

I spend quite a few months each year in Canada where I use a Telus Cellular Hub device which is also my WiFi Router.  My iPhone 5 has Cellular Data set to "Off" which insures I won't be charged via my Verizon Wireless Service Provider for charges while in Canada.  Trouble is Telus, Rogers and all the Canadian Internet Providers charge for all Data going through their Systems.  Again, My Cellular Data on the iPhone 5 is turned off, but I use WiFi for such things as checking the Weather, or FaceBook, or searching the Web.
I believe that things may be happening in the background from various Apps that use quite a lot of Data.  It could be that iCloud is part of the issue with things being backed up automatically.  It also could be that Apps like AP or other News Apps are sending large amounts of Data in the photos associated with their New Stories, etc.  I typically turn off the App Store "Updates" such that they don't automatically load.  The FaceBook works now posted videos play when you are just scrolling through the News Feed.
I have been trying to fine an article somewhere which focuses on this specific problem but unfortunately many if not most articles are about folks worried about using Cellular Data while in a WiFi environment when their Cellular Data is turned on.
Does anyone know of a fairly comprehensive article about what settings on which Apps might reduce the Data Usage when Cellular Data is turned "Off" but you are going through a Service Provider who charges for all Data Accessed even when you are using WiFi?

Thanks for your comments, it is clear you understand my plight.  The trouble is fully understanding what Apps and App Features are transferring data in the background any time you happen to turn WiFi to on (even if you have had it off most of the day or night).  Obviously things like Location Services can constantly be sending and receiving data from my iPhone without any action on my part.  Also if you have things like photo backup on the iCloud then each time you take a photo you are sending a copy out.  All App Updates if set to Automatic also can add up to quite a bit of Data.  Reading the News on AP or scrolling through FB News Feed is actually adding up to a lot of Data.  There could be other culprits that I am not even thinking of.  I don't want to turn Apps like Find My Phone off or turn iCloud off due to loosing the value of such a program entirely.  Again thanks for your quick response.

  • HT201263 I tried to reset my iPhone (3gs) with deleting all data. When it power off and automatically again on then it is showing Apple logo only. Not restore and startup my phone. I tried to charge and not charging. What I should do now?

I tried to reset my iPhone (3gs) with deleting all data. When it power off and automatically again on then it is showing Apple logo only. Not restore and startup my phone. iPhone alerming low charge and I tried to charge and not charging.
    What I should do now?

Something has gone wrong. Turn your phone off, then force it into recovery mode:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, select "new".

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you are experiencing an issue with your iPhone searching for service.  If you have not resolved this issue, I would recommend trying the troubleshooting steps in the article below.

  • A few questions on upgrade fee, overage charge on prorated bill, and data usage when phone is on WiFi

1st question, I bought 2 iPhone 4s's Dec 2011, unlimited plan which was up Dec 2013. April 19 2014, I bought 2 iPhones, 1 5c, 1 5s with the more of everything plan, which is not more of everything, it's far less then my old plan, but whatever. I got charged a total of $60 for a $30 upgrade on each phone. I'm not upgrading, my plan was expired, I bought 2 new phones and was forced into a new plan in order to get new phones, how is this an upgrade? Never been charged in all these years(early 2000's I became a customer) of being a loyal Verizon customer of an upgrade fee, unless I was upgrading my phone before the contract was done. If I was a brand new customer to Verizon would I get charged this upgrade fee?
2nd question, my bill cycle runs from the 24th to the 23rd, since I bought these new phones on the 19th, there were 5 days left to the billing cycle, so they prorated old plan and new plan. New plan is 1 GB, 5 days were prorated, I used in those 5 days between the 2 phones 371.77 MB, and I'm being charged for an overage of 206.61 MB of $15. Now my plan gives me 1 GB a month, that would be 1024 MB, I didn't go over this 1 GB in the month, so why am I being charged an overage for 5 lousy days?
3rd question, really 5 days and I used 371.77 MB's of data? Strange, didn't get the new phones until after 6pm on April 19th, yet I have all kinds of data charges on that day, when both phones were in my home, connected to WiFi the entire day. I spent the entire day online jerking around with 2 different Verizon employee's over getting new phones and a new plan in my home, on my computer, never touched my phone the whole day. Couldn't the day before I smashed the screen beyond use. So how on earth did I have all these data charges on that day? Now I could understand if I had, had the new phones earlier in the day, because there seems to be some strange glitch with these iPhone 5's were you use data, even when your phone is connected in your home to WiFi, but these were the 4s phones during the times of these data charges..
I'm not happy at all, first I got jerked around by 2 different Verizon employee's online, every option I tried they had some stupid reason why I could not do that and that I had to go with 1 option, I got so fed up, I didn't process my order online. I then turned around and went over to Sprint and spent time online with a Sprint employee, where I did not get jerked around, where I could have placed my order and then went to the store and picked up my phones right then. But no I was foolish, long time Verizon customer, happy with Verizon until this day, so I got in my car, drove to a store and spent an hour doing the whole process over with a nice friendly store employee(not a Verizon store). Now I get these upgrade fees, overage fee for 5 days of data service, where I was not over my monthly 1 GB, and all kinds of data charges appearing in the 5 days of the bill cycle on these new phones. Might not be much strange added on data to some, but in 2 years 4 months of the 4s iPhones, never used more then 1 GB a month and now so far I will exceed that 1 GB in this new billing cycle and by at least 1 GB, it would be 2 GB's except I shut one phone completely down and the other one is down to bare minimum, when nothing has changed in the way we are using our phones, and we are not using more data. I have now completely shut my phones cellular data off, I've turned it on in this billing cycle 6 times, bare minimum of only when I absolutely have to. The other phone, I can't do that with, and that phone is going through double, possibly triple the amount of data then the 4s, same user on both phones. I do now shut the cellular off of that phone when it comes into the house and it's not turned back on until it's out my door, so I will see if these strange data charges stop for when the phone is in the home hooked to WiFi. On top of that, I have shut down every app on that phone that is needed when WiFi can't be accessed, cellular is turned off except for 2 or 3 things. This is a bunch of garbage, I have 2 smartphones, and I have to shut them down and turn them into nothing but a normal old phone. What the heck is going on with this?

I will try to address your concerns - and explain why things are as they are ... you may not like the explanation but hopefully it will help you understand what has happened and what you can do moving forward.
I got charged a total of $60 for a $30 upgrade on each phone. I'm not upgrading, my plan was expired ...  If I was a brand new customer to Verizon would I get charged this upgrade fee?
Verizon's definition of "upgrade" is purchasing phone at a discount and agreeing to a new contract - if you are a brand new customer, you pay a $35 activation fee.  If you are an existing customer, you pay a $30 upgrade fee - this has been in place for about 2 years now.
You only had the new plan for 5 days - pro-rating means you get about 34 MB per day, or about 170 MB for those 5 days.  If you used 371, that a 200 MB overage.  You likely were only charged for 5 days of the new plan as well...
...  I have shut down every app on that phone that is needed when WiFi can't be accessed, cellular is turned off except for 2 or 3 things. This is a bunch of garbage, I have 2 smartphones, and I have to shut them down and turn them into nothing but a normal old phone. What the heck is going on with this?
My daughter recently upgraded from her iPhone 4 to a 5c - her data spiked and she used nearly 1 GB in the first week where that was about what she uses an entire billing cycle.  We went through all her data settings and discovered she had about 10-12 apps (Facebook, Instagram, etc) that were updating all the time, connected to wifi or not.  She shut most of those off and will open the app and update manually when she is on wifi.  She downloaded and is using Onavo to manage her data and understand what gets used and when.  I hope we have it under control, but the defaults on the iPhone 5 seem to turn on everything to update constantly, and that's just not a good thing.
It does seem the iPhone 5 series takes more work than any phone I've ever used to keep data usage manageable.

  • I'm accruing data usage when I'm connected to wifi

I'm positive that Verizon is committing Fraud.
10 days ago my husband and I switched from Sprint to Verizon and got new Galaxy S5 phones.  While with Sprint, my husband used about 1.5GB of data a month and I used .5GB a month.  The reason my usage was less was because I use my phone less (duh) but also because my phone very often wouldn't connect to their service, 3G or their so called 4G at all.  My husband didn't have this problem, but I got so fed up with the connectivity that we switched to Verizon.  We thought that since I would be able to use my phone a little more and the data would be faster and more reliable, it would be prudent to buy 3GB of data a month even though we were only averaging 2GB before.
Well, after having Verizon for 10 days, we have used 2.3GB between the two of us; .5GB for me and 1.8GB for my husband.  In other words, our data usage has MORE THAN TRIPLED with Verizon.  This is absolutely wrong, so I did some investigating.  I looked at the data usage details spreadsheet that Verizon posts online with the date, time and amount of each occurrence of data usage.  Be aware that we have wifi at home (where we are basically every night from 7pm-7am) and my husband has wifi at work (weekdays 8am-5pm).  I was SHOCKED to see that the vast majority of my husbands outrageous usage was being incurred specifically during times when he was at work or home, even significant amounts at 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning.  Only a little usage was being accrued during the about 3 hours a day when he might not be connected to wifi.
I spent over an hour on the phone today (including 40 minutes on hold) with tech support.  They must have thought I was an idiot because they kept telling me about how our phones are using a lot of RAM.  I'm no IT expert, but RAM is internal memory and not equivalent to data usage.  Then they tried to tell me that the time stamps on our spreadsheets were delayed and that the data was really being used when not on wifi but not showing up on my account until some unknown period of time later. This is ******** and I debunked that theory by turning off my data (when there actually was no usage accrued) and then turned my data back on momentarily at 10:15am.  A usage charge popped up a little while later on my account time stamped 10:16am.  Pretty accurate, which tells me that the other time stamps are also accurate to within a minute or two; not off by many hours.
Then tech support told me to try a test to see if I can show that data is being accrued when I'm definitely not using it.  They told me to turn off my data for an extended period of time, use wifi only, and then check my account to see if data charges are accruing.  Well, of course data isn't accruing when data is off.  That proves nothing.  That does not have any bearing whatsoever on the fact that data usage is accruing when data service is ON but I'm CONNECTED to a reliable, strong, functioning WIFI signal like the one at my home and the one in my husband's office.  There are only two explanations left.  Either my husband and I are severely psyciatrically disabled and are imagining having working wifi signals and are somehow watching youtube videos in our sleep; OR VERIZON IS COMMITTING FRAUD.  Its one or the other, the way I see it.
IS THERE A REASONABLE SOLUTION TO THIS???  Resolving this issue by telling me to manually turn my data service on and off each time I come and go from my house is unacceptable.  Verizon, you need to fix your practices and remove the fraudulent usage from my account immediately.  Since I'm sure you won't, I'll be switching to AT&T since I still have 3 days to cancel my contract.  Third time is a charm, I hope.

I took it off WiFi and complained on their Facebook page.  I think their
salespeople telling folks to always stay on WiFi is their way of making
money!  Take your phones OFF of WiFi, put Task Killer Advanced (google play
store - FREE) on your phone and hit that repeatedly during the day.  It
will shut down the junk running in the background that loves to nom on your
data.  The other thing I do is to constantly dump cached data from my
phone.  We did all three of these things and we have only burned up .7 of
our 3GB limit since June 1st!  Not even a whole GB in 19 days!  Also,
remove all updates from every app that your phone came with (bloatware)
every so often. And shut the phone down every night after you run the task
killer and empty your data cache. Somewhere along the line I will learn how
to completely uninstall that darned bloatware and I will pass it on!
Let me know if this makes a difference for you!

  • Data usage while I'm asleep and connected to WIFI

I just got a new Iphone 5S and also noticed my usage has gone up considerably.
I was just checking my data log for my new cycle which is only two days old and have seen significant MB of data usage in the early morning hours while I'm asleep and I'm on WIFI in my house.  The phone is next to me on the night stand.
How could this be?  I've read that sometime people leave apps running in the background that might account for that but I'm on WIFI in my house so it shouldn't be using any data at all.  I've also noticed smaller amounts of data usage registering during times of the day when I'm in my house on WIFI.

The answer from the Verizon person seems wrong. I've had various iPhones with data through them for 3 years... I just got a new phone a few weeks ago and my data usage has gone up. I have had "cellular data" turned on.... but I ALWAYS have with my other phones as well and didn't experience this issue. I have data logging in the wee hours of the morning while I'm asleep at home and it should be connecting to wifi. This seems very backward to have to switch cellular data on and off when you come and go from wireless networks. It has never been like this in the past 3 years i've been with Verizon and a smartphone. I'm really annoyed I've paid overages for a couple months now seemingly due to this weird issue that has never affected me before. @joel_vzw please provide further explanation.

  • Iphone 4s-when wifi is off and I am away from my home connection can I receive and send texts and text messages?  I want to keep my wifi off to limit data (email etc) to when I want to check it.  Cellular is roaming"voice only" it says. Can I get texts?

When my wifi is off and I'm away from my home connection - it shows wifi off (unless I turn it on to check my email etc.) - and in the settings cellular it shows "voice only". Will I be able to receive and send texts in those settings?  Or check voicemail.  I had wanted to keep my email from coming in all the time and only want to check it periodically - so I turn ON my wifi when I want to check my email.  But when my wifi was off away from home- I hadn't seemed to be getting my texts.  So- do I need to keep wifi roaming connected when away from home to receive and send my texts in real time.  (which is what I want) or am I still able to send and receive texts with my wifi off when I'm away from home.  (When I'm home I am connected to my home data plan automatically through wifi and I get texts when I'm home - but I'm thinking I'm not getting texts in real time - is it because my wifi is off when I'm away from home?  My cellular shows voice only when my wifi is off away from home.  Am I doing it right to receive and send texts away from home?  Or do I need to open up the wifi in order to receive and send text messages.  I know that I would need to turn on wifi roaming - which will use data - for email checking or sending - as well as to use browsing apps and now I'm guessing to receive voice messages I may have missed?  So do I need wifi on to receive texts too?  Thank you - GregorySC

    Hello GregorySC,
In order to send and receive SMS or MMS messages, you will need to have an active cellular data or Wi-Fi connection.
You will need these to send and receive iMessages:
An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    iOS 5.0 or later
A cellular data connection or a Wi-Fi connection
A phone number or Apple ID registered with iMessage in Settings > Messages

What the heck is going on here?
    Can anybody help???

I am having the same problem.  Went to a Verizon store to see if someone there could help me.  While in the store another customer was in asking the same question.  We were both told by the Verizon store manager that she couldn't help us.  She told us to call Verizon to get it straightened out.  Tried to get through to Verizon on the phone and got tired of being on hold for 30 minutes.  Went online to try to "chat" with a representative and I couldn't get through to anyone that way either.  I have a shared plan with my husband and we have never gone over the 4GB.  Now it is continually sending alerts that we are going to get charged for overage.  The records show data being used all hours.  Even when we are asleep???  Hope Verizon gets this straightened out soon.

  • Data usage with wifi

Hey I am traveling Canada now, and turned on Air Plane mode in order to block the data usage. At the same time, I turned on wifi so that I searched the map through the traveling. However, today, as I turned on the cell phone on and checked the data, I used 0.4GB data with Airplane mode on. BUT, When I turned off the airplane mode, it changed that I have never used data. Also, after turned off the plane mode and turned on the plane mode back, it keeps showing that I have never used data again. I just confused which one is true. Also, my phone model is galaxy 4S.
    Thanks

Not sure how to explain the anomaly, but I have traveled using airplane mode and never got any charges of data on the phones I put in airplane mode before arrival.

  • 999-999-9999 & data usage when phone sitting on table untouched

    Hi,
I understand this has been asked before and I know they are supposed to be blocked calls or as Verizon told me "numbers from other carriers who don't supply the information".  I am still at odds with this because I have 4 of these calls showing up under current usage and only one of them is an incoming and I do remember receiving and answering a call that said it was "restricted" so 1 out of the 4 is not an issue.
I have never in my life dialed "*69" to block my number on a phone, neither on my cell phone or home phone when I had one. I remember now that you could do it but I didn't even know what you had to dial to do that until someone told me when this came up. The other three all have numbers in the "Description" column so they don't list a city like my other outgoing calls.
Also, 2 of these were in the 4 AM hour...wouldn't I remember making a phone call at 4 AM, especially if I had to dial *69 before the number? And also, these three that appear to be "outgoing" are NOT listed in my phone's history of phone calls made. And no one had access to my phone but me. No one. Anyone have any idea what these could be?
And also, although this may need to be on another board...data charges coming in the wee hours of the morning, like between 12-1 AM and 4-6 AM and I have not touched my phone. And I have no alerts set, except I have occasionally gotten a "you have new content" but have not found what this is talking about either. And I had a data usage show last night at 12:29 AM and I remembering checking the time at 4:07 AM and there was no notification on my phone. Totally stumped over this too. Any help or idea's appreciated!
Verizon told me yesterday the data issue sounded like either my VZ Navigator or Social Beat. I believe I signed into Social Beat one time but if I go to "Social Beat" it will say "no account" listed by all three icons.

It sounds to me like someone put spyware on your phone. Maybe you have a crazy ex or your bf doesn't trust you. idk but that's what it seems like to me. Does your phone ever just light up when it's just sitting there and nobody is touching it.

When the run report I do see data.
when i export to a pdf and print preview the report in Bids.. i see data for the first 22 pages and then the remaining pages are blank with just the header showing up...
when i go to the pdf and select page 25 it is blank but when i go the report and not in print preview mode.. and i type in 25 in the page number data shows up on that page...
the report is set to a portrait and the margins are set to 0.
How can I solve this problems and why is it happening... the size of the sub report are the same..
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Data usage when streaming from iTunes library to Apple TV?

I'm trying to manage my GB data usage through my ISP and was curious if, while streaming between my iTunes library and Apple TV television shows I have previously downloaded, is that using any data whatsoever? I know I used data to actually download the show initially, but once its just sitting in my library, and I call it up from my Apple TV later and start playing it, is there data usage going on?  Thanks!

Home sharing and AirPlay don't use any data, they are done over the local network. It will then depend on the source. If any content in your iTunes library has a cloud icon then it will be streamed, if it resides on your hard drive then there is no internet connection required apart from iTunes purchases (pinging server for verification)

  • Data usage when using find my Iphone

    Hi
Does anyone know in a 24hr period how much data transfer takes place when you have find my Iphone turned on (Sent & Received)how often does the Iphone report to the server or is it connected all the time. I am seeing heavy usage on my Iphone and I am trying to illiminate different apps ect.

It should be minimal or zero unless unless you are actually trying to locate your iPhone, send a message or sound alert to your iPhone, or when attempting a remote wipe. When I've tested locating my iPhone, it is far from being instant - it takes quite a while. If the iPhone were constantly or regularly reporting location to the server, the location process would or should be much faster.
