Database access in a MVC architecture

Hi!
I'm a bit confused with regards to where the database access code should be put in a MVC architecture. From reading various articles and posts on this forum, there seem to be a lot of different opinions.
Some seem to put the database access code in the controller servlet(or JSP), while some seem to use helper classes from the JavaBeans, while a few people even seem to access the database directly from the JavaBean.
My questions is: What is the best place to put the database stuff in a MVC architecture? An explanation as to why a particular solution is the best would be great..

Let's say I have a class called Department that contains methods like getName(), getId(), setName(), etc... The Department class is my business object. To save and load Departments from a database, I have a class called DepartmentManager. The DepartmentManager saves and loads the departments to the database, and has methods like saveDepartment(), saveDepartments(), loadDepartment(), getDepartments(), etc... In some cases, my manager classes also caches the results so they don't have to load from the database each time. Often times, the manager class is a singleton. My Department class has no idea how it is persisted, or that it is part of a cache. It just knows about itself. The DepartmentManager is resonsible for managing all the persistance and lookup functionality for Departments.
Therefore, if I have a JSP page that needs to display Departments, my code might look like:

    Webdynpro works on MVC architecture .So there can be three approaches
    1) Create Java Bean Model
    Importing Complex JavaBean model into WebDynpro by creating relationships for the model classes
    WebDynpro: Importing Java Classes as model
    2)Can call create the database in the  Controller and view
    3) you can use a java file and copy the same in the wdproject>src->package--> java file and then access the java methods.

  • Collections in MVC architecture

    My question concerns the use of collections of entities in a database-access MVC architecture. An example similar to my situation would be a Corporation, which (among other attributes) has a collection of Departments, which (among other attributes) has a collection of Projects, which (among other attributes) has a collection of Employees.
    Sometimes, I may want information such as all the Employees in the corporation, which would necessarily involve retrieving all the entities from the database. Other times, I may only want the employees in a certain Department, in which case I wouldn't want to waste the time population all the Department beans with Project and Employee information.
    Basically, I'm not sure how to best go about populating Javabeans that contain other Javabeans containing other Javabeans. Obviously, when I go to retrieve a Corporation bean, I don't always want all the Departments, Projects, and Employees. However, it seems like it would be using a lot of redundant code to have one factory that returns just the Department base information (without it's Employees), one factory that returns all the Departments and their Projects (but not the Employees), one factory that returns all the Employees for a given Project (but not ALL the Projects and their Employees), and so on.
    I've read plenty of MVC tutorials (and even taken a course in it), but I've never really seen a basic situation such as this addressed. What is the best way to go at this situation? Does anyone know of any tutorials/examples that are similar to this situation?

    That's it orr94 ! No MVC related topic, says about these. this may be referenced in your experience of Programming and System Design, with the knowledge of OOP, implementing DBs, Performance issues, and so on...
    Simply i can tell you, by my experience, try to feel ( and then find ) what your system is supposed to do? and how it does that?
    In a situation when you should give many reports, collecting your information, and the main part is GIVING THE LISTS OF REPORTS, just try to load all of your data. ( here first time spends much time, but after that no time is needed for DB operations. you every time read from your objects ( makin' them Updatable )
    But if number of the times you should gather this information, is such small that it dosn't actualy needed to read more than wanted.
    So see that there is NO GENERAL ANSWER to this question. ( i found it on that project, spending a month to find any answers. )
    YOU SHOULD FIND YOUR ANSWER. try feeling your system by real-time TESTS, that would make you sure about a solution.
    P.S. Now as a tip
    Create a Database Logic Bean which all related methods go in for CRUD operations on entities, then as friends said, try puttin some flags for reading entities ( e.g in your constructors which use DB bean methods )
    and then try different approaches readin the data, see which makes sense to your system.
    As the last point, what chintat said ( A Getter() which reads the from db that lists ) is not a good solution, where each call to that getter(), where it'd be many calles, attemps to access db!!! you should read once, then getter() returns a reference ( maybe readonly ) to that list.
    I think the question is when to read, where YOU SHOUD FIND THE ANSWER. ;)

    I want a generalized class/bean that can form a connection , execute the passed query and return the results.Does any one has any URLs or sample code to explain how to do this using introspection?

    i don't think it need help,every book has such code,maybe i haven't understanding your meaning correctly,follow steps:
    1 create a class named DBconnect,
    2 in the constructor of the class,you create the connection,
    3 add several methods that execute the operation into your class ,such as :executeQuery(),executeUpdare().....
    that depands the requirement of your project.

  • Database access patterns

    I've been wondering for a while what techniques people use to access databases. I'm not talking about the JDBC API but how are applications designed. One obvious objective is to consolidate all database access into one package and not have SQL strewn throughout the app. This obviously helps for abstraction purposes, you could easily change the backend, but also makes for easy updates if you make a schema change. I've read about the Database Access Object pattern and like the idea of seperating database access details from the rest of the application. My question is one of implementation. Say you use something like the DAO pattern. Now you have one database access class for each business object and typically (not always) there is a 1:1 mapping of business objects to database tables. How do you actually implement the DAO class? Do you write a single method for each type of query you may perform? For example, say I have a simple schema where table A references table B and table B references tables C. I could query for Object C (from table C) in a number of ways such as:
    select * from tableC, tableB where tableC.column2=tableB.column1 and tableB.column3=1234;
    or
    select * from tableC, tableB, tableA where tableC.column2=tableB.column1 and tableB.column2=tableA.column1;
    and so on . . .
    I'm wondering if people use some kind of abstraction to dynamically genereate the sql query on the fly or do you simple have seperate method calls for each query and just drop in the values:

    It seems labor intesive to have to write a method for each type of query,insert, update,delete you might do. How do people handle this? Are there any other standard/accepted methods of separating database details from the rest of the app, other than the DAO pattern?

    I'm trying to dive into an object/relational mapping layer. I don't want to have to write and maintain DTOs for every application.
    I looked into OJB from Jakarta first. I liked the cache it had as part of the Jakarta family. It worked fine, but I was uncomfortable with the level of documentation.
    I'm diving into Hibernate now. It seems to have more traction, and there's more documentation. I like the XDoclet/Ant tie-in. Gavin King is working with JBoss now, so Hibernate will be wired into JBoss in the future.
    I hope I can make Hibernate a standard part of my repertoire.

    My question is about high level design. I've written some JSP pages and some very simple JavaBeans that work on Tomcat.
    Now I'm trying to design a Database access layer
    I want to have a connection pool class and some other business logic classes communicating with each other.
    How can I start a bean and keep it running and how do I access its methods from other beans?
    Is this even feasible?
    if I declare the scope of the bean as the application would I have to put it in all the pages of the web site or not?
    Also, should I just forget about JavaBeans and do Servlets? Maybe EJB is better for this?
    Please provide some examples in your answer if possible.

    Now I'm trying to design a Database access layerThe design and implementation of a persistence layer has nothing at to do with how the data is eventually displayed. Persistence is the same whether you use a Web or a Swing interface, so the question about Tomcat is moot.
    I'd look at Martin Fowler's "Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture" for its chapter on persistence or the Hibernate object/relational mapping tool.

Then I have my Java code do a JNDI lookup to access them, do the required database operation, and then close the connection to return it to the pool.

    Is this even feasible? I'm not sure I know what you mean by "start a bean and keep it running". HTTP is a request/response, stateless protocol. You should think about operations as being initiated by a request and then going out of scope once the response is generated, much like the protocol itself. You don't keep a bean running in that case.

    site or not?You have to <jsp:useBean> in every page that needs it. Whether or not application scope is really appropriate or necessary is another matter.
    Also, should I just forget about JavaBeans and do Servlets? You can and should use JSP for View, a servlet as your front controller, and JavaBeans to do the work in the back. It's not an either/or question. You really should be using all three.
    Maybe EJB is better for this?You use EJBs if you have a highly transactional, distributed, clustered application. If none of those things apply to you, there's no reason why you must use EJBs.
    Have a look at the Struts and Spring frameworks.

  • Javabeans in MVC architecture

    Building a web application based on MVC architecture. I am new at this so my implementation may not be correct. My Javabeans are representations of SQL DB tables. So, e.g. I have a Customer table in my SQL database, I would have a CustomerBean to represent this table.
    My problem is that Javabeans can only have empty constructors. So how can I get a single record from my customer table? Currently, I am using a method to get this record.
    E.g.
    CustomerBean customer = new CustomerBeanImpl();
    customer.setRecord(primaryKeyOfCustomerTable);
    In setRecord(int PK) method, I execute a SQL query to retrieve the record with that primary key and set all the instance variables for that object.
    I find that this method "not elegant".
    However, if I break the requirements of Javabeans, i.e to implement non-empty constructors, i.e.
    Customer customer1 = new Customer(primaryKey1);
    this would be better. In this case, my class is not a JavaBean anymore.

    Thanks. So, I conclude from your reply that Javabeans
    must have empty constructors. That's what I thought
    too. Until I was looking at an example from "Core
    servlets and JSPs" and came across an example where
    the class used (if anyone is interested, it is
    "TravelCustomer.class" in page 365 of the book) is not
    an Javabean per se, as it did not have a empty
    constructor but was used in the <jsp:useBean> tag like
    any other Javabean!
    That got me confused. Anyone care to explain this?As you know, <jsp:useBean> first checks whether a reference to the specified class exists as an attribute under the specifed id and scope.
    If the reference is found, then the scripting variable is set to that reference. If not found, then <jsp:useBean> checks whether the class can be instantiated and has a no-args constructor. If yes, an object of that class is instantiated (in Tomcat using Beans.instantiate) and the reference is stored as an attribute in the specified scope as well as in the scripting variable.
    In the "Core Servlets..." example, the TravelCustomer object is always instantiated in a servlet and its reference saved as a session attribute with id = "customer". The servlet then forwards to a JSP that includes:
    <jsp:useBean id="customer" class="coreservlets.TravelCustomer" scope="session" />Since the "customer" attribute is always present, the useBean never has to instantiate a TravelCustomer object and so the lack of a no-args constructor does not come into play.
    I'm not sure if this is good or bad practice, but that's why it works.

    For eg, you create the design objects in IR (View)
    the controller is the J2ee engine of the (WAS server) (controller)

  • Regarding Provisioning a user to Database Access Tables

    Hi,
    I've just completed with the installation of OIM 9101 and upgradation of 9101 to 9102. I'm facing a bit wierd. When I try to create a GTC for the Database Access Tables, I'm not able to see Database Access Tables option, in the drop down list for the Transport Provider.
    I'm a bit confused if I've wrongly upgraded the system or if at all i've missed out some step. Though OIM seems to be ok and working fine.
    Any suggestions as to how to solve this ?

    Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
    This Error seems to occur because I was trying to attach certain pre-prop adapters within the default process form that is created while installing the connector. Roaming around the threads here, I came to know that this might be the problem as pre-props don't work fine when applied to the GTC's default form.
    To overcome this problem, I've thought of a solution wherein I should create a new Custom Process Form and then apply my pre-props. But for this approach, I'm stuck into the middle. How can I apply a new Custom Form to an existing Provisioning Process ? Is this fesiable ? If yes, where should the changes be made ?
    I tried changing the Table Name inside the GTC's provisioning process so that GTC can pick up the my new process form instead of its default process form, but that again gives an error saying :

    I'm still struggling with the same cube and this is my 3rd post and once i fix some thing the other breaks. Please forgive me. When i process my cube i'm getting the error:

    My question is when the error says column 5 (is it the column 5 in the DSV?) or is it the column 5 in the DIMENSION list?
    My next question is the DSV Query works perfectly fine , so why this error in cube? This is what i have in the query in DSV.

    I just counted the columns from the top:
    1) compliancejoin, 2) mowingsector, 3) caseclosedflag, 4) casehasvendorinfo, 5) mowingstatus, 6) assignedtovendor.
    I see now that your subject line talks about column 6, but you say column 5 in body of your original post.
    I don't know anything about cubes, but apparently there is some mapping problem when you run it from SSAS. (I assume it is SSAS, a part of the product I'm entirely ignorant of.) I figured that if you had got tripped by the zero-based numbering, you
    might be staring on the wrong column.

    I'm still struggling with the same cube and this is my 3rd post and once i fix some thing the other breaks. Please forgive me. When i process my cube i'm getting the error:

    My question is when the error says column 5 (is it the column 5 in the DSV?) or is it the column 5 in the DIMENSION list?
    My next question is the DSV Query works perfectly fine , so why this error in cube? This is what i have in the query in DSV.

    I see now that your subject line talks about column 6, but you say column 5 in body of your original post.
    I don't know anything about cubes, but apparently there is some mapping problem when you run it from SSAS. (I assume it is SSAS, a part of the product I'm entirely ignorant of.) I figured that if you had got tripped by the zero-based numbering, you
    might be staring on the wrong column.

    Optimizing the load of the database
    Using table buffering
         Using buffered tables improves the performance considerably. Note that in some cases a statement can not be used with a buffered table, so when using these statements the buffer will be bypassed. These statements are:
    Select DISTINCT
    ORDER BY / GROUP BY / HAVING clause
    Any WHERE clause that contains a sub query or IS NULL expression
    JOIN s
    A SELECT... FOR UPDATE
         If you wan t to explicitly bypass the buffer, use the BYPASS BUFFER addition to the SELECT clause.
         Optimizing the load of the database
    2.  Use the ABAP SORT Clause Instead of ORDER BY
    The ORDER BY clause is executed on the database server while the ABAP SORT statement is executed on the application server. The database server will usually be the bottleneck, so sometimes it is better to move the sort from the database server to the application server.
    If you are not sorting by the primary key ( E.g. using the ORDER BY PRIMARY key statement) but are sorting by another key, it could be better to use the ABAP SORT statement to sort the data in an internal table. Note however that for very large result sets it might not be a feasible solution and you would want to let the database server sort it.
    Optimizing the load of the database
    3.   Avoid the SELECT DISTINCT Statement
    As with the ORDER BY clause it could be better to avoid using SELECT DISTINCT, if some of the fields are not part of an index. Instead use ABAP SORT + DELETE ADJACENT DUPLICATES on an internal table, to delete duplicate rows.

    Optimal number of indexes for a table  You should not create more than five secondary indexes for any one table because:
    Whenever you change table fields that occur in the index, the index itself is also updated.
    The amount of data increases.
    The optimizer has too many chances to make mistakes by using the 'wrong' index.
