Database Characterset Conversion from AMERICAN to JAPANESE

We are creating a test environment from a database with NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1. This needs to be converted into Japanese characterset with NLS_LANG = JAPANESE_JAPAN.JA16EUC
As per my understanding, I need to first export the database, then create a new database with Japanese NLS_LANG, and then re-import it
Could someone please confirm the steps please
1. Do I need to change NLS_LANG before exporting the database?
2. Can I run a database characterset conversion check before exporting db?
3. Is there any other pre-cautions that I need to take
Oracle Version: Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.6.0 - 64bit Production

I have used the Character Set Scan utility (csscan) Version 1.2. I have attached the report results below.
To convert the character set instead of export/import, can I simply do
ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET ja16euc;
I would appreciate feedback on this if anyone has worked on this conversion before.

    I am trying to install oracle applications 11i on Windows XP Professional on Toshiba laptop centrino 1.743 GHz) and for some reason the process is getting stuck at :

    I have tried several times and everytime it is getting stuck at this stage only.
    I am installing in language English only... and selected most of the options defaulted by the system.
    Pls. find below my log file. Pls. advise how to fix this problem.
    The system doesnot give any error message but get stuck at this point for hours. Couldn't figure out the problem... Please throw in some ideas... Thanks in advnance...

    Hi there.
    I had encountered the same hanging problem at "Performing database characterset conversion adsvdcnv.cmd" (On Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - - XEON PROCESSOR - a staging area installation - rapidwiz ver 11.5.9.22 - . ).
    What i did is that i installed the JDK version : 1.4.2.04 instead of 1.3.1 and reinstalled the product. So the installation completed successfully..

    I had the same error and it turned out to be an issue with the domain name specification. I have a single node install on a computer not on a network. But it had been part of a domain earlier.     I need to do a Character set conversion from US7ASCII to WE8ISO5589P1 on a 10g database. I need to make the proper analysis before doing this conversion.     Also, consider migrating to WE8MSWIN1252 in place of WE8ISO8859P1. If you have Windows clients, then WE8MSWIN1252 should be used anyway. Even if you do not have Windows clients, WE8MSWIN1252 is a binary superset of WE8ISO8859P1 and can hold all WE8ISO8859P1 codes + ca. 15 characters more. It is better to use it in case Windows clients are used in future.

    There is a Metalink note on [Bug 6460895 - CSSCAN may hang / run slowly|https://metalink.oracle.com/CSP/ui/flash.html#tab=Home(page=Home&id=fm2z4pjj()),(page=KBNavigator&id=fm2z4vd6(&viewingMode=1141&userQuery=csscan%20sleep&searchControl=1146))] that looks to be vaguely related. This indicates that the bug was fixed in 10.2.0.4, but unfortunately the bug itself isn't published, so it is rather hard to know if this is your problem or not. It would probably be worth logging a support request to see if Oracle support can determine whether or not you're being affected by this bug.
    Meanwhile, can you apply the 10.2.0.4 patchset and see if that solves the problem?

  • Utl_file output converted from database characterset

    I have a developer that is sending output to a file using utl_file. Here is a snippet of his code:
    fileHand UTL_FILE.file_type;
    buffer VARCHAR2(1000);
    UTL_FILE.put_raw(fileHand, UTL_RAW.cast_to_raw(buffer), TRUE);
    In the database there is data such as:
    Stéphanie Chéry
    but in the output file it is written as:
    Stéphanie Chéry
    basically it is being converted to WE characterset.
    This is RDBMS 11.2.0.2 64bit running on RHE 5. The linux user account executing the proc that generates the output file has NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8 in it's environment. We don't understand why the characterset is being converted. he has tried using the NCHAR functions of UTL_FILE and still gets the same results.
    Any idea what our issue is?

  • Conversion from DATE to TIMESTAMP datatype

    Hello,
    My issue is as follows:
    1. I have one variable of type DATE, which I assign the value of SYSDATE
    mydatevar DATE:= SYSDATE;2. I want to find *"today"*, truncated to DAY
      TRUNC (mydatevar, 'DD')
    TRUNC function returns DATE datatype. So I will receive in point 2 for example *'2010-01-13 00:00:00'*.
    3. I want to assign the value from point 2 to a variable of type TIMESTAMP
      mytimestampvar TIMESTAMP := mydatevar;which implicitly will convert the DATE variable to TIMESTAMP.
    Problem: During the conversion (both implicit and explicit conversion with a format mask) I lose the "00" hours and "00" minutes and receive something like this: "10-JAN-13 *12*.00.00.000000000 AM".
    Question: How can I convert from DATE to TIMESTAMP keeping hours and minutes zeros?
    Why I need this conversion: I have a table with a column "column1" TIMESTAMP(0) and I would like to take only those rows from the table, where "column1" is in range from today 12 o'clock in the morning till now (whatever hour it is).

It's probably more of a function of your NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT and NLS_DATE_FORMAT. For example your NLS_DATE_FORMAT could be setup by default for a HH24 (24 hour time) which would report midnight as "00" hours. However, it looks like your NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT is setup with a "HH" format with a meridian indicator which means 12 hours time.
    Your comparisons should be using date/timestamp data types anyways so as long as the input value is converted properly into a date type this shouldn't matter anyways.
    You can see what is actually stored by using the DUMP function:
    SQL> SELECT  DUMP(TO_TIMESTAMP(TO_CHAR(TRUNC(SYSDATE,'DD'),'MM/DD/YYYY HH:MI:SS AM'))) AS TSTAMP

    Typ=187 Len=20: 218,7,1,13,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,3,0,0,0,0,0                  Typ=13 Len=8: 218,7,1,13,0,0,0,0As you can see the TSTAMP and DT store nearly the same values (218,7,1,13), but the TSTAMP has more precision because of fractional seconds.

  • Issue with database characterset

    Hi All,
    Database Version:11gR2
    Developer complained that they are trying to insert Japanese characters and they are able to insert but while displaying its not actually dispalying Japanese characters. So i checked the database characterset.
    SELECT * FROM nls_database_parameters WHERE parameter = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';

    NLS_CHARACTERSET WE8ISO8859P15For 'Japanese' i know that the characterset required is AL32UTF8. The above one supports French i believe.
    So here are my questions.
    1. Is there anyway i can insert and view Japanese characters properly in the above characterset database?
    2. Is there anyway i can change the characterset of the database(i believe we cannot, but just confirming it)
    3. If i create AL32UTF8 and import the database from above characterset, will that work?

  • Character conversion from Unicode to WE8ISO8859P1

    Hi,
    I am having a text field in which i need to enter Unicode characters also. When entering the Unicode character '€' in the text field and when clicked on the "Save" button it is throwing the error "java.sql.SQLException: Cannot map Unicode to Oracle character". The oracle database characterset is of type "WE8ISO8859P1". Do i need to do the conversion of Unicode character to WE8ISO8859P1 in the Controller explicitly?If so, Please mention the method through which i can achieve the same.Or is there any profile options or setup changes through which i can avoid this error?Can anyone please suggest how to proceed with this?

    Pl identify your database characterset
    SQL> select * from NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS;If the NLS_CHARACTERSET is WE8ISO8859P1, it is not capable of storing the Euro symbol (pl do a google search to find various references).
    To store the Euro symbol, you will most likely need to change the database characterset to UTF8 - pl see the MOS Docs mentioned in this thread for details - Adding Greek & German language to R12

     Getting a odd error. This code was working perfectly before a SQLServer upgrade.
    The linked database is working, I'm able to pull up data from it in separate queries just fine.
    I'm getting the following error.

    can anyone spot the issue? I've tried sever variations of the same code, but still get the same thing.

    It is not a good idea to use string dates for predicates in WHERE clauses.
    Use DATETIME or DATE in predicates.
    If you are not interested in the time part of DATETIME, use DATE datatype.

    My oracle 9i database characterset is AL32UTF8.
    I wanted to change this to UTF8 for some testing purpose...
    After few days i need to reset this characterset back to AL32UTF8.
    how should i proceed on this?

    In metalink i found out the following
    In 9i you can't simply use "ALTER DATABASE CHARACTERSET" to go from
    AL32UTF8 to UTF8 because UTF8 is a SUB-set of AL32UTF8
    (some codepoints which are correct in AL32UTF8 are not known in UTF8)
    So you will run into ORA-12712 if you try alter database ....
    I hope this makes sense when the database contains data.
    suppose if i drop my schema(now the database has no user data) and try to change the database characterset from AL32UTF8 to UTF8 will it impact any other?
    and after changing to UTF8 can i import the user data again (say from export file which was taken from a UTF8 database) ?
