Database disk image is malformed

I got this error whike using "tweetadder" on my macbook pro. "database disk image is malformed"
What is the solution to this?
Thanks

I'm investigating this same issue.

I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to simply trash the database and rebuild it from scratch rather than trying to locate the invalid entries.

What does this error message mean.  I have an external drive and I wonder if it is corrupted and if I can restore what is lost there.

    Hi breinhar9911
I've never seen a case where Lr has managed to delete a catalog or backups, so something really sounds odd there.  I've seen cases where it's lost track of where they are, but I can't think of a way LR could delete them.  LR doesn't even know backups exist!
Which NTFS on Mac software are you using?  Considering how new Mountain Lion is, that's the first place I'd be looking for odd issues.  I'm no expert in odd error messages, but disk I/O error stands out to me in that message.
When you've had the catalog on the internal drive, what were the failures you were getting then?

    help!?

    Hi,
I'm very sorry to hear about the 3123 error. This error is a very low level error from the underlying database Muse uses. It typically indicates the file has been corrupted by something outside of Muse (i.e. failed file transfer, failed file synchronization, file on media that was removed without being ejected, etc.),
Was the file stored in a synchronized folder (i.e. Dropbox, Creative Cloud Connection, other) or on a server?
It would be helpful if you could send us the .muse file at [email protected] along with a link to this thread. (If the file is larger than 20Mb you can use a service like Adobe SendNow, SendThisFile or WeTransfer.)
It's very rare that a file that reports this error can be repaired, but if possible we'll repair the file. Even if it's not possible, examining the file may help us determine the underlying cause of the corruption.

  • How do I convert TC sparse bundle to disk image?

Ok, this question could be cross-listed under a number of threads, so I had to just pick one...
A few months ago, the HD in my MB was clearly dying, so I replaced it with a larger, faster drive. All good, until I realized I had been close to maxing out my Time Capsule before I upgraded my MB's HD, so I upsized that, too.
    Fast forward 2 months.
I have a weird problem where iPhoto events start going dark. The database had these previously imported files listed, but the files themselves were nowhere to be found! The event in iPhoto showed black squares where the images used to be, but even looking in finder... No pics!
I want to go back into my old (saved) HD that I pulled from my Time Capsule. I stuck it in an external USB enclosure, and hooked it up. I told Time Machine to use it as the backup, but after it 'verified' it, it didn't show me the archived files. It does show a 'sparse bundle' in finder, which I understand is similar to a disk image. So is there a way to convert the sparse bundle to a disk image? Do I need to plug my old TC HD back into the TC to get to that archive?
Help! Among the lost photos are ones from a trip to Australia and my grandmother's memorial service. I need to get these back!
    Thank you in advance.

I've already done the TC surgery once before and the hardest thing was loosening the adhesive on the rubber pad / gasket on the bottom of the unit. After that, I completed the HD replacement in about 15 minutes... piece of cake. There's actually a good tutorial on AppleFritter. But I digress...
It's not too much of a digression. Remember that if you are just firing up the Time Capsule with the old hard drive, you don't have to reassemble it. Just swap out the plugs from the old drive to the new and turn it on. A true PC geek never runs with the cover on.
However, messing around with adhesives and thermal paste introduces a new element of risk. If you know the dates that have good data, and you are comfortable merging the newer photos back in, accessing the data via the Finder on an external enclosure would be faster and safer.
So, can I turn the TM backups off and still enter 'TM' to browse through the backups on the drive? I've ID'd the specific dates of my missing photo events, so as long as I can get into the backup, I will know just what folders to search for in the 'Originals' folders in the backup.
Yes. That is probably one of the most important and least known tips about Time Machine. You can still use it even if the backups are turned off. Furthermore, if you ever start to have problems on your machine, you should turn off Time Machine to avoid further corruption of your backups.

It will be noted that this is an OS9 image, I've made a small partition just for running Reason/Rebirth.
But I don't think the fact it's OS9 should be an issue.
The current main start-up disk is a OS X clone made by CCC on a Western Digital 250gb HD, but the above problem on the source disk Disk Utility was the reason I used CCC to clone in the first place (if you see what I mean).
I'm trying to avoid putting the old disk back in but I will if I have to : I am assuming that the problem was on the source disk therefore I can deal with it on the OS X clone.
Cheers if anyone can shed some light,
    Steve B

Yes I do have access but I'm afraid I blew the firewire bus on this TiBook last year (noted elsewhere in the discussions) so can't do target mode. Twas a terrible blow to an otherwise mint book...
I have been using it since & the damage seemed to be limited to the lack of firewire & inability to sleep.(the laptop not me!!!)
I'm not yet in the position to buy a new book (or even a £200 logic board which is the only way of restoring the firewire (which I might do yet as I am a Rebirth fanatic & it only runs on OS9)
The only way I can remotely work on this is by removing the disk & putting it in one of my enclosures.
As a matter of interest what action were you going to suggest?
    Cheers,
    Steve

  • Mail on disk image, Spotlight can find messages, but "entire message" can't

For security purposes I've moved my to a disk image. For details on how to do this, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5837719
It's a relatively easy thing to do as long as you make sure that a symbolic link exists to your new Mail disk image's volume from ~/Library/Mail.
Getting to the point: Spotlight is able to find my mail messages when the disk image is mounted. So far -- no problem.
The catch is this: Mail->Search->"Entire Message" is completely broken. I get zero results, no matter what the query is. Finder Spotlight searches are able to find results for the same queries. We're talking about local mbox folders, not online IMAP folders. Searches within Mail in To/From work fine.
I've tried the following suggestions, scoured from various help forums:
    -- repairing disk permissions
    -- rebuilding the Spotlight index
-- deleting Envelope Index and re-importing my messages
    -- vacuuming the SQLite databases
    None of these suggestions helped.
I've caught wind of this on other forums, but so far there doesn't seem to be a definitive fix, unless I've missed something. I'm not sure if the fact that I'm running Mail from a disk image is particularly germaine to the issue, either.
Any ideas on how to get Search working for entire messages again?
This is on 10.5.1, clean install. (This is a new MacBook.)

Thanks Dave. I went to Betalogue and went through all the posts and I finally found a way to fix the Search Entire Message Spotlight problem in Apple Mail - at least it worked for me. I have been trying to fix this with all sorts of solutions for months and it turns out it was related to a problem with the Launch Services Database. I confirmed this by looking inside my user/library/mail folder and seeing that inside each Mailbox folder, the sub mailboxes all had standard folder icons and not the inbox tray style icons.
Note that you can easily fix this through Terminal Commands, and not all the following steps are completely necessary, but there are many people looking at these threads that want to just push buttons...
*== So here are my simple steps to fixing Apple Mail Search ==*
    1. Attach and turn on any external hard drives you have that may have a copy of Mail.app on them
    2. Delete all OLD copies of Mail.app that you can find (don't worry about Time Machine), but make sure you keep the latest version of Mail.app in your working Applications folder.
~ This is so that the LaunchServices database won't easily become corrupt again
    3. Install the latest version of Onyx - free to use and download from www.macupdate.com
~ I suggest Onyx, because some people don't want to mess with the Terminal.
    4. Quit all open applications and run Onyx (it will want to check your Hard Drive etc...that's OK).
    5. Go to the Maintenance pane and then the Rebuild tab and select only the LaunchServices box. Click Execute.
~ This should fix the primary problem with searches
    6. When that process finishes, select only the Mail's Envelope Index box. Click Execute.
~ This should fix related problems with other searches
    7. When that process finishes, select only the Spotlight Index box. Click Execute. (This process of Rebuilding your Spotlight Index could take hours depending on how big your hard drive is).
~ This will give you a clean fast Spotlight database that Mail uses for Entire Message searches.
    8. Quit Onyx
    9. Open Mail.app and test your Entire Message Search!

Hope that helps - it certainly, finally, did for me!

  • Why does screen saver prompt for secure disk image password?

Okay, seems like an odd problem, but here it goes.
I go into System Preferences->Dektop & Screen Saver.  As the program "loads" availabe image sources and such I get a pop-up requesting a password to my secure disk image.
Yes, I have a secure disk image in my home directory.
Yes, the secure disk image is currently "locked" (Not mounted in finder).
I click cancel (a few times, probably 2 maybe 3 times) and things continue along fine.
I select a photo source that I want for a screen save and exit peferences.
I then go an start the screen saver (I'm using Hot-Corners).
I get the message "Looking for pictures....." for , well...basically forever...
Sure enough I touch the mouse to leave my screen saver and there is the pop-up again.  Asking for me to unlock my secure
    disk image.
I thought this might be related to Spotlight.  I tried reading several threads and have gone as far as taking my entire hard-drive/volume
and putting it into the "Privacy" tab under spotlight.
Anybody have any idea on what is going on and how I might get it so the "Desktop & Screen Saver" stop prompting me to unlock my
secure disk image?  (WITHOUT having to make sure the disk image is unlocked before I sleep my screen or open the screen saver utlity)
As always, I am only speculating that this is Spotlight related so that could be a red-herring....
    thanks in advance.

Update: i made some progress on this issue.  I found that in the ~/picture/iPhot Library/Database/ directory
there is a file called Library.apdb.  This file has an entry for the secure disk image i have/had.  I moved the file
to Libraryapdb.bkup and sure enough, my picture problem went away.  The screen aaver panel no longer prompts
me to unlock my secure disk image.
So now the next chapter of my problem;when i open up iPhoto it wants to rebuild my photo library(which makes
sense and is what i want to haopen) so i allow it.  After about 25 mins it has rebuilt the iPhoto library, but there is
one problem.  The secure diskimage reference is back in the Library.apdb file that has been recreated!
So now i need to figure outnhow to get iPhoto to remove anynreference to a phot library i once had on the secure
disk image but have long since removed.
I first created an iPhoto library on my secure disk image by holding the option key and invoking iPhoto.
I removed that library awhile ago....
So how do i make iPhoto remove a no longer used iPhoto library?

  • Disk Imag Failed to mount Reason: No such file or directory

    Hello,
I've been trying to download firefox and msn messenger for my mac!
Everytime i try to launch the .dmg it says 'Failed to mount' and the 'reason' is 'No such file or directory'
This happens with everything i download!
I dn't know what to do!
I've searched it, found some soloutions but nothing works!
    Thanks Steve

I've had this happen before, if I remember correctly it's just because of a corrupt download. Try downloading the .dmg files again and they should work. The other problem is it may be a permissions error. Where are the files located that you're trying to mount? Try putting them in your home directory. My first guess would be a corrupt download though.
I was suprised to find no information in the support database, or on google for this erorr with disk images.
    Hope this helps.

  • Quicktime to iDVD - iDVD quits when making disk image

You folks helped me a hugely with the arduous process of producing a nice 45 minute iMovie->iDVD movie last year from my digi camera, which actually works (http://www.galfromdownunder.com/peru). Thank you! Last year I was flummoxed by misplaced chapter markers. It's not the case this time.
I am doing another one of a similar size, and am at the stage of trying to burn a disk image, but it keeps falling over with 'iDVD unexpectedly quits' after about an hour and half. This time I saved the little log that pops up with 'send to Apple' (does anyone actually read it if you do?) and have posted it here:
    http://www.galfromdownunder.com/ftp/iDVD-crash-report-may2106.txt
I would really be so grateful if an extreme geek would mind taking a look before I try to reverse engineer this whole process further. The log always seems to stop at a place that says:
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
The difference between this project and last year's is as follows:
    1) In an attempt to save time and space, I bypassed iMovie, and concatenated the QT7 clips and moved the resulting final movie directly into iDVD.
    2) Yes, I did see that the Chapter Markers I painstakingly inserted (using that arduous text file process described in QT Help, mindful of not putting one within 2 secs of beginning, end, etc etc) into the movie are not picked up by iDVD. Groan. Still, the disk image burn quit. Then I tried again with the second concatenated QT movie without chapter markers, but it still quit with the above report.
    3) I moved individual files to iDVD fudge a separate 'scenes' menu. I know it means there is redundancy in the data now, but there is 4 Gb to play with, so why not....
    4) The total capacity comes to 4.3 Gb according to the Status section in iDVD. When I clicked on the DVD Capacity button it said the total was 62 minutes. I thought it was under ... hmmm... had it set to Best Performance.
    5) I have about 11.47 Gb free on my laptop. I even tried making the disk image to a 20 gb Lacie external Firewire drive but it still quit.
    6) Is there any difference between moving a reference movie to iDVD vs a self-contained? Does the s/w resolve them for you at the end of the day?
Really appreciate help - I realize could/should get iLife06 and a bigger machine etc etc but since I managed to do it last year, why spend more money unless there is an insurmountable tech reason to do so.
    Thanking you,

My. You sound like an advanced user, but that sounds like a very advanced crash....
You know, I'm not one of the great experts, and I'm here to try to learn why iDVD won't start with a "Missing (iDVD) Image" in the crash log, but I've also had very little success with QT editing. Assembling clips frequently produces a video that is corrupted between clips, and a save doesn't really produce a truly complete file from a series of clips. Usually, the file plays up to a broken video, and the video then freezes, while sound continues. Yet picking on the video at the cursor will restart the video, so it's in there, just broken. Common occurance, this. This can be validated when that malformed file is imported into MPEG Streamclip (free app, and a good one), with the import only loading the clips up to the malfunctioning clip. I'm guessing that iDVD is running up against a malformed section in your QT file, causing a crash against a incorrect behavior in how the code accesses memory.
    What would I do?
Since there doesn't seem to be any "self-healing" ability in QT, and since you already have a QT file with times and bookmark names, you might be happier if you went ahead with iMovie, and used the QT file for a ready reference to recreate the video in iMovie. I've done this in remakiing a DVD from another DVD I've created. The recreation process only takes maybe 1/2 hour compared to the much longer first effort. Copying is easy.
I use Final Cut express myself, and like its quality, and use an external drive for movie making, so you can live with the 11gigs you have onboard using your Lacie. Given the sad behavior of iDVD on my G5 recently, not starting and all, I'm thinking that maybe another 3rd party product, like the highly recommended "Toast" may help me elude what I'm beginning to recognize as substandard Apple apps. Apple has annoyed me endlessly with my need to "convert" the standard 'mpeg' to use in Apple products, like Final Cut (even after the $10US upgrade to play mpeg). Perhaps that would be a long term positive for you too.
Like your current experience, I'm at the "had my fill" point with pure Apple apps. Too much dancing with them trying to get common communication to work and too little visibility into why malfunctions are occurring.
In any case, good luck on this fix. Hope someone can get you rolling.

  • Encrypted Disk Image mounts without Password

I've created a new encrypted disk image so that I can store sensitive documents and did it carefully, step by step,(per instructions from www.macworld.com/2425) but after I unmounted, then remount, it doesn't ask me for a password. It just mounts as if it were a regular file. Am I suppose to unmount the volume and drag the disk image to the trash? I don't know what else to try.

The Mac uses and encrypted database of keys called the "Keychain". When you login, it opens the "login" keychain using your login password. That keychain can be used to provide passwords for applications and services, and form data for web sites. In this particular case, the password for your encrypted disk image is being stored in the keychain and automatically provided.
If another user attempted to open the disk image, the disk image mounter would first look in his keychain and then the system keychain for a key to open it with. Finding none, it would prompt the user to specify the key (password). If the user supplies the correct password, the system would put it in his keychain for safe keeping, and the user would then be able to open the image again without supplying the password.
You can remove the key from your keychain by opening up /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, selecting the "login" keychain, and then looking for an entry with a name that matches the .dmg file in question. Highlight it, and then press the delete key to delete it. The next time you attempt to open it, it will prompt you for a password.

  • Use disk image as time machine backup volume

I have a large RAID array attached directly to my Mac via firewire (so it is not a NAS). Can I create a disk image file within that larger array, then mount that image as a disk, then use that as my Time Machine target? I see lots of discussion of doing this for NAS, but I cannot get TM to recognize a mounted disk image file as a TM backup volume. FYI, the reason for this is that I want to create a sparse image that limits the amount of space that TM will take, without eating up my entire RAID array, which is huge. Also, by tricking it into thinking it is another volume, TM will still let me back up other stuff on the RAID array to TM.

    Thank you,
It's interesting to me that it will work if mounted as an SMB volume (at least according to many other posts). While I agree with you that it won't work, as I have verified that, I wonder if it could work if enabled (similar to the ability to enable unsupported network volumes).
A follow-on question: I would really like to have TM back up FROM a mounted network share to my TM database. I have a network SMB share with a lot of my data on it. I currently have to rsync it to an external drive in order to get TM to back it up. TM is set to ignore network volumes volumes. Interestingly, the SMB shares appear to get mounted on /Volumes instead of /Network, but that is aside, as both directories are set to be ignored by default. Anyhow, is there a way to turn that feature off and allow certain network shares to be backed up (and similarly blocked from back-up in the same manner that I do everything else)? Again, lots of posts out there about backing up TO a network share, but none tell me how to back up from a mounted network share to TM.

  • Disk Image won't automatically mount for Share iPhoto Library

    Hey All,
I've just got a new mac and am sharing an iPhoto library between two users. I moved the iPhoto Library Folder to a DMG set it to ignore permissions.
In each account I did the following: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
The problem is that the DMG won't mount automatically mount. I set it up under both user accounts to mount at start up but it won't do it.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using fast user switching or logging out and then back in to the second account? It may be that fast user switching doesn't trigger a "startup" scenario in the second account which is necessary for the disk image to mount.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs

I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.

Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

  • Disk Utility doesn't finish creating new disk image - naming issue??

Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard and carried along an empty disk image created in OS 10.4.11. I use these for archiving data on read-only DVDs and password protect the images.
In the earlier OS, I found the practical limit for the dmg was 4.3 GB, containing 4.27+ GB of data (anything larger failed when attempting to burn data DVDs). Today, when I looked at my empty dmg file, the OS 10.6.6 Finder showed it to be larger both inside and outside (just under 4.7 GB inside I think - didn't write it down). I suspected that it may be corrupted or at least not give correct directory information, so I deleted this dmg as a precaution and tried to make a new one with the old size by selecting custom size within Disk Utility. Now every time I try to create a new dmg this it stalls at about 100 MB.
The image format panel has several additional settings in OS 10.6 . There are two places for names - in the "Save as" field above and in the "Name" field below. (Haven't yet found any documentation where the reason for this is explained or which lists possible name limitations. The Help info appears to be identical to what was in 10.4) I've tried making both names the same, but it still stalls
    Disk Utility settings:
    Save as __Diskname
Name in lower field __Diskname (have also left it blank no difference)
    Custom 4.3 GB
    Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    128 bit encryption
    single partition
read/write format* (also tried CD/DVD master - no difference)
    * All files are not necessarily added at once so I'm pretty sure I want this to be read/write

In case this isn't obvious I mean read/write formatting on the hard drive, but when burned the format will remain the same whether or not the disk used is rewritable

    Hi Michael,
Did you reformat it HFS+ or something else?
Some USB2 Flash Drives Write at a disappointing USB1 speed, but Read at USB2 speeds.
From what I can find, that isn't one of them and should take maybe an hour & a half to transfer 30 GB to it. Of course if write speed IS USB1, then you could expect 2 days or more.
I'd stop it. Reformat it, then make the Image on the HD and try transferring it.
