Database failover logging

We have had a couple database failovers without any indications in the logging as to what triggered the failover. One such event just occurred this morning and from the logs we can see when we moved the databases back but are not able to see any error that
would have caused the initial failover. With everything that is logged in the Exchange logging folders there must be something but I am at a loss as to which logs they would be, partly because there are so many and once in its a wall of text and without knowing
which to concentrate on they all look the same.
We have 2 mailbox servers in our primary datacenter that have a database copy in our secondary datacenter. The database copy server can handle the load of one server's databases (at least on weekends when we do scheduled maintenance) but as we are seeing
not both. When both primary database servers failed their mailboxes to the secondary people started having connection issues/very slow response.
Strangely in the Exchange\HighAvailability\Debug event logs stop at 7:53AM and resume at 9:04AM this morning and our first reported case of mailbox unavailable was at 8:05AM. I started activating the database copies back to the primary servers right around
9AM. Everything is back to normal but we are still trying to nail down what exactly happened, hence this ticket regarding the logs.

Hi,
Have you checked the application log and system log? Is there any related error messages?
If there is no any related events, I'm afraid it's hard to troubleshoot the root cause of this issue, as what Nithyanandham Singaravadivelu suggestioned above. Please check the application around the time when this issue appears again.
And you can use the Test-ReplicationHealth command and the Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus cmdlet to check your DAG state.
Best regards,

  • Messages Stuck in Submission Queue after Database failover to DR site

    Hi Everyone,
Yesterday Night we had a Database failover to DR site but emails were stuck in the submission queue to resolve we failed back the Database. We have Exchange 2010 SP3 Ru4 with Active-Active DAG across 2 AD sites.
After checking the connectivity logs on the Transport server i found out that the Transport server was trying to connect to the mailbox server where this database was residing directly instead of using the Transport servers in the 2nd site.
We have 4 more databases on the same server but for those databases there was no issues and the mail flow was working fine.
Only thing i checked is that we have about 700 GB of log files for this database. Could that can cause this issue.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
I did not restart transport service. I assume restarting transport service might have resolved the issue.
But, i want to know the reason why this happened as we have stretch DAG so this can cause major outage in case more mailbox database fails over.
Removing the logs files is what i am thinking to do maybe within this week.

  • Cannot write to transaction log "C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\sqlanywhere\database\BI4_Audit.log

    Hi friends,
My server Intelligence Agent (SIA) can not start because the database service "SQLAnywhereForBI" can't start also. I got the following error :
"I . 08/09 20:35:06. A read failed with error code: (1392), Le fichier ou le répertoire est endommagé et illisible.
    E. 08/09 20:35:06. Fatal error:  cannot write to transaction log "C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\sqlanywhere\database\BI4_Audit.log"
    E. 08/09 20:35:06. unable to start database "C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\sqlanywhere\database\BI4_CMS.db"
    E. 08/09 20:35:06. Error writing to transaction log file
    I. 08/09 20:35:06. Database server shutdown due to startup error "
    inside the database log file.
    Please, can you help me

I found the solution by following the advice given on the following forum:
    http://evtechnologies.com/transaction-logs-on-sybase-sql-anywhere-and-sap-businessobjects-bi-4-1
In fact, I crushed the BI4_Audit.db and BI4_Audit.log files and I replaced with others that I got from another machine where I installed BO again and where the files are not corrupted . After I logged in to the CMS database by executing the command in the command line:
    dbisql -c "UID = DBA; PWD = mypassword; BI4 Server =; DBF = C: \ Program Files (x86) \ SAP BusinessObjects \ sqlanywhere \ database \ BI4_CMS.db."
Once connected, I start the command:
    alter database 'C: \ Program Files (x86) \ SAP BusinessObjects \ sqlanywhere \ database \ BI4_Audit.db' alter log off;
    The query runs successfully.
And that's good, I can be connected to BO smoothly.
    Thank you again Eric

  • Best practice for default location of mailbox database(s) / logs

    Hello,
I don't recall seeing any options during the Exchange 2013 install, to specify an alternate location for either the mailbox database or log files. I've reviewed the commands for moving the mailbox databases, but before reviewing the options for setting a
location for the log files, I thought it best to see whether it's still advised to separate log/mailbox databases away from the OS, with our Exchange server being a virtualised instance?
Also, I'm assuming that Exchange still requires the usual backup of transaction logs, for them to be cleared?
    Many thanks.

    Hi JH,
here is a link to storage options and requirements for the Mailbox server :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee832792(v=exchg.150).aspx
By default when installing New Exchange server With mailbox role,it will create default database and log path.
Recomended is to have Database and Log files on seperate disks. You will have to attache those disk first, then you can create New database using ECP.
Please look at my Gallery With full guide on how to setup New Exchange server.
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Install-Exchange-server-b5cce9e4
Also for future use you might need to clean up log files to free up Space on Your Exchange server:

    Hope this helps

  • Want to Buy SQL 2008/2012 standard edition to achieve Database failover

    Hi Team,
We want to know exact part code details to procure 2 nos Sql 2008/2012 standard edition server to installed on "Window 2012 R2 Standard Edition, Factory installed, no media, 2 socket,2 VMs, No client" Server.
I have Access control system application (Main-Standby) on which we need Automatic database failover by using SQL Standard server. Application vendor has suggested us to procure 2 nos of Microsoft Sql 2008/2012 standard edition server.
If possible then please let me know exact part code details of Sql 2008 and 2012 standard edition server which doesn't have any issue to installed on above said server edition.
    Thanks,
    Vishal

    Hi Vishal,
Unfortunately, we do not deal with part codes, I request you to check the below link as this is not the correct forum.

    SIMPLE_SQL_NAME
The SIMPLE_SQL_NAME function checks the input string conforms to the basic characteristics of a simple SQL name:
The first character of the name is alphabetic.
The name only contains alphanumeric characters or the "_", "$", "#"
Quoted names must be enclosed by double quotes and may contain any characters, including quotes provided they are represented by two quotes in a row ("").
The function ignores leading and trailing white spaces are ignored

I'll just throw a shameless copy-paste from Metalink note : 164839.1 , hope you can use it to get further ? :
Subject: FATAL ERROR IN TWO-TASK SERVER: error = 12571 Found in Alert File
    Doc ID: Note:164839.1 Type: PROBLEM
Last Revision Date: 17-DEC-2007 Status: PUBLISHED
fact: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition
symptom: Errors appear in alert file
symptom: FATAL ERROR IN TWO-TASK SERVER:
    symptom: ERROR = 12571
    symptom: trace file generated
    symptom: Database operations continue successfully
cause: The most common cause for the above error is an ungraceful
disconnection of a session from the oracle db while the db is currently running
a dml statement issued by that session. The error is recorded when oracle
attempts to reply back to the session with the results of the dml and cannot
access the session. Overall database operations are usually not affected.
An ungraceful disconnection could cause by but is not limited to any of the
    following:
    - the client machine crashed
    - the network connection crashed
    - the user exited the session improperly (not issuing the 'exit' command)
    - the user application allows the user to exit the application without properly
    terminating the session.
The above can cause problems with corrupted rollback segments if occurring on a
regular basis and is not addressed. This would require db recovery and
possibly a db rebuild (not a light matter)
PMON will usually rollback most transactions in the rollback segments for a
session if it finds that the session has been ungracefully disconnected, but
there is always a chance that it cannot and this will lead to rollback segment
    corruption.
    fix:
The dml and the user that issued the dml can be determined from the trace file.
The current dml is in the tracefile header section. The user can be found in
the process state dump of the trace. The process state shows the machine,
o/suser, and user for the session.
The DBA can use this information to determine what the user was doing at the
time and if there was an ungraceful exit from the session the user was
    utilizing.
The DBA should then address the cause of the ungraceful exit to reduce the
    possibility of recurrence.

  • Standby database archive log apply in production server.

    Dear All,
How I apply standby database archive log apply in production server.
    Please help me.
    Thanks,
    Manas

How can i use standby database as primary for that 48 hour ?Perform a switchover (role transitions).
First check if the standby is in sync with the primary database.
    Primary database:
    sql>select max(sequence#) from v$archived_log; ---> Value AStandby database:
    sql>select max(sequence#) from v$archived_log where applied='YES'; -----> Value BCheck if Value B is same as Value A.
If the standby is in sycn with the primary database, then perform the switchover operation (refer the below link)

  • 2005 database and log file locations

Is there a SQL query to list where exactly the database and log files reside for all databases on an instance (sql server 2005)?

You can query the Information form DMV
    sys.master_files (Transact-SQL)
    SELECT *
    FROM [sys].[master_files]

  • Move Exchange Server 2010 SP1 databases and log files to another partition

My company has been running Exchange Server 2010 SP1 on virtual machine for almost three years. My colleague created this virtual machine (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) before Exchange Server installation with following partitions:
    C partition - for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 OS (size 40 GB)
E partition - for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 databases and logs (size 410 GB)
Those two partitions are on the same virtual hard disk "next to one another" so I can not extend C partition which gets filled up with IIS logs (when C partition free space is under 10 GB I am backing up these logs with backup software and afterwards
deleting them thus freeing up space on C partition). I have 2 databases (along with Public Folders) and size of these databases and their logs is around 235 GB.
Is it safe to move these databases and their logs to another partition which I would create on separate virtual hard disk for this purpose only and how much time this process might take since during this process databases
would be dismounted and inaccessible to all users? He made big blunder in my opinion but I have to solve this.

Yes, its safe to move the DB/Logs. You can follow the procedure mentioned in this article to do it via EMC or Shell... http://exchangeserverpro.com/move-exchange-2010-database-folder/
But it depends on various factors on how long it is going take, like size of the database/logs, server performance, storage performance etc...
    Besides this, upgrade Exchange 2010 SP1 to SP3, SP1/SP2 aren't supported anymore! http://blogs.technet.com/b/rmilne/archive/2014/04/09/end-of-exchange-2010-sp2-support.aspx

  • Database, redo log files accessiblity

    Hi guys!
I have a quick question regarding Oracle File Permissions (Operational Security Check).
How would one check if the Oracle files are not world read/writeable
(database, redo log and control files are not world accessible)?
    Thanks!

    Hi guys!
I have a quick question regarding Oracle File Permissions (Operational Security Check). What is this referring to?
How would one check if the Oracle files are not world read/writeable
(database, redo log and control files are not world accessible)?Example from a lab setup on AIX
    $ find $ORACLE_HOME | wc -l
    18197
    $ find $ORACLE_HOME -perm -0002
If "at least" the world writable bit is set, find will list files in and below Home top directory.

  • Why don't we keep Oracle Database ARCH logs in RAW devices

    Hi All,
Why don't we keep Oracle Database ARCH logs in RAW devices?
How ARCH process is related to Block Device and Character Device ?
    Thanks,
    Tusar
    Edited by: user11987718 on 26-Jun-2012 09:59

Why don't we keep Oracle Database ARCH logs in RAW devices? 1.This is because raw devices do not enable sequential writing of consecutive archive log files.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16795/rman.htm#RACAD320
2.with raw you have to specify the exact size of the file at creation time, in contrast with file system, where you can create file without specifying its size, start writing to it, apending new blocks to it until you are done, and thus creating a file of whatever size it needs to be to hold all information.
    http://www.dbasupport.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-16429.html
3.raw file systems are difficult to manage because you cannot run normal os commands on them.(as there is no file systems)
How ARCH process is related to Block Device and Character Device ?A block device would read/write bytes in fixed size blocks, as in disk sectors. Character devices read/write 0 or more bytes, in a stream, such as a TTY or a keyboard.
For more details about what is block and character device type :
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_file
And now think, how arch process is related to block and character devices.
