Database installation Size 10g
Hello,
Can anyone tell me what the installation size of an Oracle 10g database would be.
My database is 65GB at the moment but will rise to 205GB in very little time. I am looking to find out how much space I should be reservice for the Oracle installation and Indexes etc.
If a breakdown of the typical installation could be provided based on my query this would be very much appreciate

You have to start defining terms here.
The base Oracle server software can take something like 4 GB, depending on platform. And an "empty" database... say, 1GB or less, depending on version and system specifics.
But for this Oracle solution? What is it? What kinds of information does it store? What character sets are used? And so on... The application specific bits may need anything between a couple of bytes to tons of terabytes.

Problem Oracle 10g database Installation on Windows 2003 Server
Hi All,
I am trying to face some problem to install oracle 10g database on windows 2003 server with service pack 2. Once I start to installation it give me an error "Error in writing to directory 'c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\orainstall2004xxx'. Please ensure that this directory is writable and has at least 45MB of disk space. Installation cannot continue"
I double-insured that there is enough disk-space and I am also in the Administrators-Group.
Please guide me for the above problem although I have done oracle 9i database installation with the same configuration.

Do not stop the DBCA to do this.
Go to Start->Control Panel-> Services -> oracleserviceyoursid and start the service. That will get you through that error.
Just in case you see this one as well....I did encounter a TNS error after that. I resolved this by commenting out (#) the line SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=(NTS) in SQLNET.ORA file. -
Oracle 10g database installation in red hat 5
what are the packages needed for oracle 10g database installation in red hat 5?
what do you mean by yum way of installation?Check on the release notes for your platform
This is for x86-64 Linux.. read it all, then you'll find the "6 Documentation Corrections and Additions" section you'll find the RPMs that you need
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/relnotes.102/b15666/toc.htm
then go to the official doc installation of 10gR2 on x86-64 Linux
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15667/toc.htm
Yum is a package management tool. This is what you'll be using to install the RPMs. But first you'll have to setup the Yum repository, usually what I do is stage the DVD media on the server then make it as a repository. If ever there's a specific (higher) version that I need then I just pull it on the RedHat Network.
There are a lot of HOWTOs about Yum. You may read on this link http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/en/

APEX2.0 on 9i not working anymore after installation of 10G database
Hello,
Up to last saturday I used APEX 2.0 on my 9i database (on Windows XP) without problems. I have several applications running and used them saturday for the last time.
Saturday I installed Oracle 10G Enterprise Edition on that same machine. I installed ONLY the software for the RDBMS, not even APEX. Later on I created my first 10g database via DBCA. Notice that I didn't do anything with APEX on that 10g database yet. I only installed the RDBMS software in a 10g home directory and created a database. That's all. No apex installed, nothing from the companion CD, only the RDBMS software in its own home.
Yesterday however, after a reboot of the machine, I could not use my applications running on the 9i database anymore: "the page cannot be found".
HELP!!!
What was changed by the installation of 10g that now causes that my applications cannot be accessed anymore? The 9i database runs OK, so that's not the problem.
I did already change the PATH settings, so that the 9i paths are checked before the 10.2 paths, but that did not solve the problem.
Has the installation changed something in the registry of XP perhaps?
Best regards,
Jan.
Best regards,
Jan.Hi all, in answer to the above suggestions:
No the 10g database and listener is completely down (no services belonging to the new 10g database are running). I checked also alle the logs, but no messages anymore since saturday.
What I did notice: Oracle92HTTPserver (a service normally started automatically) does not start. When I start it, it gives me a message that there is nothing to do and that the service therefore is not started. So the HTTP-server itself is not working anymore. I can't find any files changed by th installation in the Ora92 home Apache directories. All seems as it was before the installation And still it won't start....
Does anybody have other suggestions? Please help.
Thanks in advance,
Jan. -

How do l create a new database in Oracle 10g Express
How do l create a new database in Oracle 10g Express, other than the one that is created on installation?
Hello,
You cannot create a second XE database on the same server.
But, Oracle database can support as many Schema as you want.
"Oracle database" is like "SQL Server Instance" and "Oracle Schema" is like "SQL Server database". I means by this shortcut that for
the end users accessing to different Schemas looks like accessing to different databases.
You can have several applications on the same database. Each application has its own Schema and Datafile (Tablespace) structure.
So on your XE database you can add a new Tablespace and create a new User/Schema as follows:
sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
create tablespace {color:red}new_tablespace_name{color}
extent management local autoallocate
SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO
datafile '{color:red}complete_datafile_name{color}' size 100M autoextend on next 10M maxsize unlimited;
create user {color:red}new_schema_name{color} identified by {color:red}password{color}
default tablespace {color:red}new_tablespace_name{color}
temporary tablespace TEMP
quota unlimited on {color:red}new_tablespace_name{color}
grant connect, resource to {color:red}new_schema_name{color};Then you can connect to this new User/Schema as you defined it and create your new structure and load datas.
Hope it can help.
Best regards,

Migrate Oracle 9i Database to Oracle 10g Solaris Platform
Hi DBAs,
Thank you very much all of you, you helped me in RMAN Duplicate Database, There was a problem in my backupset and now it has been resolved.
I have now following task.
I want to migrate Oracle 9i Database to Oracle 10g ASM, both are on Solaris platform. Please provide me step by step solution. I have very big Database about 250G Database.In the "Complete checklist for manual upgrades to 10gR2" is written:
PREREQUISITES
=============
+ Install Oracle 10g Release 2 in a new Oracle Home.
+ Install the latest available patchset from Metalink.
+ Install the latest available Critical Patch Update.
... so "Install the latest available Critical Patch Update" step is that for the Oracle 10g database Oracle Home or Oracle 9i database Oracle Home ? I think that is for the 10g database/ Oracle Home ...
after applying the CPU pacht there is some "Post Installation Instructions":
3.3.5 Post Installation Instructions which demande a connection to the database:
3. For each database instance running out of the ORACLE_HOME being patched, connect to the database using SQL*Plus as SYSDBA and run catcpu.sql as follows:
cd %ORACLE_HOME%\CPU\CPUJan2007
sqlplus /nolog SQL> CONNECT / AS SYSDBA
SQL> STARTUP
SQL> @catcpu.sql
SQL> QUIT
My question is ... If I want to upgrade a 9i database to 10g and I apply this CPU before the upgrade is done (to 10g Oracle Home), how could I connect to an instance which is not present to run this script ? ... is this step mandatory or is optional ?
Thanks,

How to change existing database block size in all tablespaces
Hi,
Need Help to change block size for my existing database which is in 8kb of block size.
I have read that we can only change block size during database creation, but i want to change it after database installation.
because for some reason i dont want to change the database installation script.
Can any one list the steps to change database block size for all existing table space (except system, temp ).
want to change it to 32kb.
Thank you for you time.
-Rushang Kansara> We are facing more and more physical reads, I thought by using 32K block size
we would resolve that..
A physical read reported by Oracle may not be - it could well be a logical read from the o/s file system cache and not a true physical read. With raw devices for example, a physical I/O reported by Oracle is indeed one as there is no o/s cache for raw devices. So one needs to be careful how aone interprets number like physical reads.
Lots of physical reads may not necessarily be a bad thing. In contrast, a high percentage of "good/fast" logical reads (i.e. a high % buffer cache hit ratio) may indicate a serious problem with application design - as the application is churning through the exact same data again and again and again. Applications should typically only make a single pass through a data set.
The best way to deal with physical reads is to make them less. Simple example. A database deals with a lot of inserts. Some bright developer decided to over-index a table. Numerous indexes for the same columns exist in difference physical column orders.
Oracle now spends a lot of time dealing (reading) with these indexes when inserting (or updating a row). A single write I/O may incur a 100 read I/Os as a result of these indexes needing to be maintained.
The bottom line is that "more and more physical I/O" is merely a symptom of a problem. Trying to speed these up could well be a wasted exercise. Besides, the most optimal approach to "lots of I/O" is to tune it to make less I/O.
I/O is the most expensive operation for a RDBMS. It is very difficult to make this expense less (i.e. make I/Os faster). It is more effective to make sure that you use this expensive resource in an optimal way.
Simple example. Single very large table with 4 indexes. Not very efficient design I/O wise. Single very large partitioned table with local indexes. This can reduce I/O on that table by up to 80% in my experience. -
Setups in Database installation or patch application
Hi all,
In the database installation or patch application, in the unzipped directories you have multiple
setup.exe files along with oui.exe.
For example: in 10g
you have one setup.exe under directory 10gR2_server\database
also you have one setup.exe and one oui.ex under directory 10gR2_server\database\install.
I am wondering what are the differences among those setup.exe and oui.exe. Sometimes we tried the setup.ex in one directory it throw some error and tried another one it works. I am kind of confused.
Thanks a lot for your help,
ShirleyHi Shirley
As far as I know setup.exe is starting the Oracle Universal installer and the oui.exe is called by the setup.exe.
Sometimes your can perform silent install as this:
oui.exe -waitforcompletion -nowait -force -silent -responseFile response_file.rsp
