Database Lookup in Adobe Reader
I have an Adobe document that performs a database lookup based on a value keyed into document. It works fine in LiveCycle and Acrobat, but does not work in Reader. From what I've read it looks like I need 'Reader Extensions'. How and where do get this feature?

I finally got a reply from our special government software company that has a special team that deals with Adobe. Adobe never has given me a price straight out. The company that sells the Reader Extensions is called 4Point, I don't even think you can buy it from Adobe straight out. If you contact them they will talk to you, they are very helpful. If you continue to contact Adobe, they will circle around the issue, sending you from one phone number to another until you are sick of trying and give up. You are right, they have THE WORST customer service of any software company we use. Careful though, for the privilege of being able to do just a few things here and there you will pay around $200,000 because you have to buy the Reader Extension server. Otherwise you have to license each form separately for the privilege of allowing more than 500 users to fill them out, and that is not a joke. It is not worth the money in my opinion as we are just trying to be able to print bar codes on paper so we can scan them and apparently we can do it if each of our users has Adobe Standard which costs around $80 a person. Much cheaper, just not able to use my forms for the public. We will just use another product for that. Good luck with your issues!
If Adobe had told me that I needed to contact 4Point at the beginning of December it would have saved me 2 MONTHS of frustration. If I ever need software for something and Adobe is one of the choices they will not be on the top of my list because Customer Service is so important. We were considering their System for our Education and training system, but at this point I have taken them off our list for possible solutions for that.

"Providing interactive database lookup from forms" sample doesn't work with Acrobat Reader 7
I have downloaded and tested the Adobe sample "Adobe LiveCycle Designer 7.0, Providing interactive database lookup from forms". Everything works great in Acrobat Professional Full version, however, when I tested it in Acrobat Reader 7.0.5, it generated a "script failed..." message.
Did anybody have the same problem? You can download the sample from here:

Database connectivity is a feature supported in Acrobat only , not Reader--unless the PDF has been extended with Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions.

Spent all afternoon downloading Java plugiins and Adobe reader; each with the following "failure message."

Sometimes the Windows Installer starts behaving erratically, perhaps due to a backlog of deferred updates, and the only way to get around it is to reboot.

Unable to save LiveCycle PDF form in Adobe Reader: Steps on Adobe don't work
I went to follow the steps provided in the help video on Adobe. Two issues I couldn't solve:
How do you login to LiveCycle via the web as an admin? How do you get to the LiveCycle admin portal?
The local host (http://localhost:8080/ReaderExtensions) is unavailable. Every time I try to go there I get a 500 error message page. What is the new local host?
The steps I followed were:
So according to a video on its official website, in order to enable LiveCycle forms in Reader so they can be saved you need an Adobe Reader Extension which means we need a Reader Extension Credential loaded onto the server. For that you need to purchase a Reader extension license from Adobe.
However, there is a trial version Eric or Jay could instal for me on the Remote Desktop. They can find it at:

They will want to download the “Trial Reader Extensions Certificate” under “Downloads and updates”. It’s a 30 day trial which should work fine for our needs.
The credential then needs to be imported into the Adobe Administrator. To do that they need to:
Login to LiveCycle as an admin (via the web?)
Go to “Settings"
Go to “Trust store management”
Go to “Local credentials”
Click “Import"
Trust store type should be “Reader Extensions Credential”
Give it a name (i.e. Alias)
Browse to credential file
.pfx is the credential file
.txt is the password
Right-click the .txt
Click “Open”
Copy password from notepad
Close notepad
Open the .pfx file
Paste in password copied from .txt file under “Password” in import form
Click OK
Then there’s something about going to Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions program (http://localhost:8080/ReaderExtensions). Don’t ask. I’m personally lost at this point.
In Extensions program they need to:
Select the Extensions credential
Click the check box next to
“Basic form fill-in”
“Import and export data”
“Submit outside of web browser”
“Database and web service connectivity”
“Digital Signatures”
“Commenting”
“Online Commenting"
Set “Draft Level” to “Final”
Click the check box next to “Full Save”
“Browse” to the SNAP Survey I created and saved on the server.
Click “Apply”
In new window that appears:
Click “Download”
Save back to the serverIf you're on the machine that's running LC the administrator console is http://localhost:8080/adminui
If you're not able to get to localhost:8080/ReaderExtensions then I suspect the LiveCycle server is not on your machine. If that's the case you'll have to find out the name of the server running LiveCycle and connect using that name instead of localhost. -
Installation Issue with Adobe Reader 11.0.03.

I am having issue getting Adobe Reader XI to install onto a machine and needing help resolving it. The machine itself meet and exceed the requirement for the installation. There was a previous version of it installed, but was remove via Group Policy and now it is being deploy via SCCM 2012. So far out of 100+ machines all have successful installed adobe reader XI through the new deployment, except one. Help with Using Adobe Reader with iBook G4
I have downloaded Adobe Reader 7.0.8 several times in order to read eBooks on my G4 12"iBook using OS 10.4.7. I activated the Adobe program as directed but continue to get an error message when attempting to use the application. The message indicates that...
Could not create an EDB database: Unable to load the specified database dynamic link library.
I've sent Adobe Reader 7.0.8 to the trash and reinstalled the program from the Adobe site several times thinking that something is missing from the download; I still get the error message. Amazingly I did the same process on my iMac G5 desktop and everything works fine; the book shows up! I've posted the problem on Adobe forums for Reader but no help came back.some info from Adobe site:

"Under Adobe Reader 7.05, the edb1drv file is in the following directory: macos/selfhealfiles/CFMSupport/Library/CFMSupport/edb1drv
Exit from Adobe Reader 7.05. Locate the file and move that file to the /Library/CFMSupport/ folder. Then restart Adobe Reader 7.05. Adobe Reader 7.05 will be able to read the edb1drv file and stop the error message." -

My Drop down list won't work in Adobe Reader 9
I have a form that I created in Adobe Designer 7 but have opened and saved in Adobe Designer 9 (also redid the connection string, because it didn't like 7's). Now I can open and use the form normally in Adobe Acrobat Pro 7 and 9 and in the PDF previews of both Designers. But Adobe Reader 9 won't let the drop down list function the way it is supposed to. Also my form has fields that are binded to a SQL Server 2K5 database.
Now if Adobe Reader does not allow database connections or fields binded to them, is there a way to get similar functionality in any way?Reader Extended? Is that when you open the PDF in Acrobat Pro, go to Advanced, and click "Extend Features in Adobe Reader"? I did that and it still didn't work. Matter of fact it locked up the PDF when I tried to open it in Acrobat Pro 7 or 9.
Or is that Adobe Reader Extension ES package? -
How do I use a protected document in Adobe Reader?
I am trying to use a document that requires a user name and password in Adobe Reader on my tablet. The problem is that I have tried everything and nothing I do will allow me to enter this information. It says editing is not allowed with this protected document, but it is set up to allow editing so I can put in the info required to unlock the contents. I have attempted to search your database and all the answers I have tried have not worked. Please help! I am at a loss and I need this document unlocked. Thank you!
Adobe Reader mobile products (Reader for iOS, Reader for Android, etc.) do not support commenting or form filling with secured (hence, encrypted) PDF documents.

Adobe Reader 9.4.2 - PDFs won't open in IE 8 & IE 9
The recent Adobe Reader 9.4.2 is causing issues with PDFs opening in IE 8 and 9 browsers. Prior to this update our users have had no issues with opening PDFs generated by our website.
Our website generates USPS labels using Siberix ReportWriter software. We have not released any updates for at least a month. Again, before the release of Adobe Reader 9.4.2, there was no issues with our website's PDFs opening in IE browsers.
User System Specs:
Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 Ultimate
Adobe Reader 9.4.2
Internet Explorer 8 - "File Download" window issue
Internet Explorer 9 - "File Download" window issue
Firefox 3.6.13 - No Issues
Chrome 9.0.597.98 (with Adobe Reader 9.4.2 plugin enabled and Chrome PDF Viewer disabled) - No Issues
The "File Download" window states the following (in addition to a Save and a Cancel button): "The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupt or it has an incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download. ..."
We have the following workarounds to address this issue with our customers, but they are not ideal:
Update to Adobe Reader X
Disable "Display PDF in browser" Reader option
Don't update Adobe Reader 9 to 9.4.2
Install other PDF Reading software.
Any solutions to this issue would be appriciated.
ThanksWe are experiencing the same problem, as I mentioned below. I did some research and experimentation, and have a ... workaround. It's not completely satisfactory, but we will go with it until we have a complete solution. Perhaps the following will help others and spur some research in the right direction.
First, a quick review. The problem does not occur with PDFs located on disk; it only occurs with direct streaming of PDF data. Let's also note that the problem does NOT occur with other browsers, e.g. FireFox. So ... technically the problem is not an Adobe Reader problem and we're all on the wrong forum.
My specialty is databases and I'm certainly no expert in this area, but from what I'm able to gather the problem is instead with how IE is recognizing and responding to the MIME type of the streamed data. We're all setting the contenttype to "application/pdf" (or similar) or we wouldn't even be here. But I'm concluding that something - some windows update - has changed the way IE on clients or (in my case) IIS on the server is handling that data stream. If any of you experiencing this issue have servers other than IIS, then the problem is on the client side, I'd say.

To cut to the chase, the workaround we're going with for now is to add the following to the http response header (this is C#/ASP.NET code):
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=myfile.pdf");
That causes a popup dialog to appear asking the user to open or save the PDF, something that is familiar to most everyone. If the user asks to open the file, it appears in a browser window just as it did before this problem occurred. Again, this is a temporary solution, but at least the user can see the PDF data in a browser with one extra mouse click.
If an Adobe tech support person or anyone with more experience in this area knows the final solution, I'd LOVE to hear it. Please reply here or in email.

Error 2203 installing Adobe Reader. How do I fix?
Error 2203.Database: C:\Windows\Installer\61cd5.ipi. Cannot open database file. System error -2147287035.
I am running Windows 7 and continue to get this error when attempting to install Adobe Reader. I have run the CleanUp tool and removed all previous versions of Reader but still get this error. If it does, update to 11.0.5 afterwards. -

I've been experiencing the same problem. With Adobe 9, i can't open any type of pdf files from the web or file. My only solution with this was to uninstall 9 and reinstall adobe reader 8. If anyone knows of a solutions to make Adobe 9 to open any pdf files from online, i'm all ears! -
Adobe Reader X Intermittent Crashes
We are experiencing an issue with Adobe Reader X this issue has been occurring through version 10.x-10.x.x it will randomly crash when any user including an administrator is opening a pdf file from any location be it local or network. Adobe is installed in "sandbox" mode, the error given is: Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close. Adobe Reader will open by executing AcroRd32 alone, however when we attempt to use File -> Open to open a file or through the command line switch it instantly crashes. Prior to terminating the crash error the task manager does show two instances of Acrord32.exe running. These do terminate after closing the error windows. I have included the appcompat.txt that was generated upon the crash.

Auto-Complete bugs in Adobe Reader X / Acrobat X
When I open a PDF that has fillable forms, and auto-complete is enabled, it does a terrible job of managing it's suggestions and how it handles my desire to 'type through' the suggestions that it's offering.
To test this, you'll need a PDF with multiple fillable form fields. it seems to have the hardest time with numerical data. Spend a couple minutes entering in a lot of numerical data into the fields. Delete some of it, put in different numbers, and eventually you'll see what I'm talking about. I suggest that, because in some cases I'm able to reproduce it immediately, and in others it takes a few tries or a few different PDFs. If you have typed in an address, say '1234 main', then in a later field, type in a zip code of '12345', then in yet another field start typing 12345 then hit the spacebar, it autofills "12345main". Note how 12345main does not match anything I previously entered, but the auto-complete database thinks that it does. The 'ain' part of "12345main" stays highlighted, like that's what it's now suggesting. If you backspace back so that it shows "12345" again, and then hit space, it will auto-fill to '12345main' again. I can't simply 'Type through' thie suggestion, because it leaves the 'm' there.
What's odd, is that for the sake of this demonstration, you type in multiple items that begin with 1234, then enter '1234 ' (note the space) on another field, it actually won't suggest to you the items you previously entered that begin with 1234 . Example: in 3 fields, type in 1234 Main St, 1234 Downtown Rd., and then in the 3rd field start type 1234 followed by space. You'd think you'd be offered suggestions by Auto-complete that contain both 1234 Main St. and 1234 Downtown Rd, but you don't. If you type something like '12345' now, you'll be back to the problem i outlined above where it automatically selects an item from the list and grabs an unwanted letter from the first word after the space. Interestingly enough, if you keep typing '1234 Ma' for example, you still don't see the Auto-complete suggestions unless you start hitting the 'Backspace' key, at which point the proper suggestions are displayed.
For our users that send out a lot of correspondence to clients, this is a huge inconvenience. The only workaround is to completely disable the Auto-complete option under 'Forms'. If they do not, then they can end up with incorrect information going out to cilents, and some of them have sent printed forms to cilents containing characters that didn't make sense or numerical data that was not correct because it had picked up unwanted characters from auto-complete.

I have a website that holds 23 different PDF's. They all download fine and open correctly when downloading from a Mac computer. They even download and open fine from a Mobile Phone. However my client is getting an error over and over again. I have tested it out and this is what I have come up with.
Error:
Adobe Reader could not open 'filename.pdf'" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been corrupted (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)
I have resaved the PDF's to be compatible with Reader 6.
Works fine with
All Mac's using either Firefox, Chrome or Safari using Pro and Reader
iPhone downloads using iBook
PC's when downloading from Firefox viewing in Reader 9
PC's when downloading from IE 6.0 view on Reader 8
