Database name in MS SQL server 7/2000
Hi, Folks!!
I have a (basic) question regarding connecting up to an MS SQL server. I know the basic syntax of connecting to the server, however, I have not seen any examples on the java.sun.com site that show where you can insert the database name in the connection statements. I have search (some) of the discussions here but have not found anything anything conclusive.
Could someone point me in the right direction, at least?
TIA,
Signed: Frustrated!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!!
Okay,
I think I got it!
instead of using:
Class.forName("com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver");
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://<srvrName>:<portNumber>;DatabaseName=<dbName>", UID, PWD);I used the following:
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:<srvrName>;DatabaseName=<dbName>", UID, PWD);I don't have any of the extra Microsoft drivers installed on my computer so I had to use what was available with Java and that is the JDBC-ODBC bridge. It was just a simple matter of adding ";DatabaseName=<dbName>" to what I already had. It makes sense now that I think about it. I hope somebody stumbles accross this message someday and avoids the grief I went through.

Hello,
I am trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. I get the error bellow (Database Services Engine Failed, SQL Server Replication Failed, Full Text Search Failed, Reporting Services Failed). I already have a copy of SQL Server 2008 R2 on the machine.
I want to create a new named instance of SQL Server for some software I'm installing.
The error is below.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

If you see error descriptioon it gives access denied so basically it is because of some access issue.I guess You must be using some domin account for installation make sure it is added as local administrator also instead of using NT Authority network
service as SQL server service account use local system account .
Below link would help
http://serverfault.com/questions/212135/access-is-denied-error-installing-sql-server-2008-on-windows-7
You can also browse to setup.exe file and RK on it and select run as administrator

Restore a database in recovery mode sql server 2005
Please i need some help. My database has been marked in recovery in sql 2005 management studio and i can't connect to it how do i bring it back to normal
if your database is marked in recovery this means that SQL Server is recoverying the database typically after a sql server restart.
If the database is marked restoring, do this restore database databasename with recovery
Otherwise, you need to check the status of the recovery - Check this query: SELECT state_desc FROM sys.databases WHERE name = 'ProblemDatabaseName'; If this returns recovery_pending you have to wait. Check the SQL Server log for messages about the
state of the recovery.

What are the advantage of using Oracle Database when compare to SQL SERVER
Hi all
Please tell anyone about
what are the advantage of using Oracle Database when compare to SQL SERVER
Thanks in advance
Balamurugan Suser12842738 wrote:
Hi,
There are various differences between the two.
1. SQL Server is only Windows, but Oracle runs on almost all Platforms.
2. You can have multiple databases in SQL Server, but Oracle provides you only one database per instance.Given that the very term 'database' has s different meaning in the two products, this "difference" is absolutely meaningless.
3. SQL Server provides T-SQL for writing programs, whereas Oracle provides PL/SQLWhich means what? Both products have a procedural programming language. They named them differently, and the languages are not interchangeable. Means nothing in comparing the features/strengths/weaknesses/suitability to purpose.
4. Backup types in both are the same. (Except Oracle provides an additional backup called Logical Backup.)You make that sound like "Logical Backup" is something more than it is. It is nothing more than an export of the data and metadata. Many experts don't even consider it a backup. I'm sure SQL Server provides the same functionality though they probably call it by some other name.
5. Both provide High Availability.Well, I guess they both have a suite of features they refer to as "High Availability". But what does that really mean? The devil is in the details. Remember, the two products don't even agree on what constitutes a "database".
6. Both come in various distributions.???
>
If you are going for an Implementation, you can try SQL Server Express Edition and Oracle XE which are free to use.
Then you can choose whichever is comfortable for your needs.

Retrieve available server names for MS SQL server
hello
Can somebody tell me how I can retrieve available server names for MS SQL server.
When MS SQL server loads it asks for server name to connect but on the same time has a combobox with the available server names(instace+database name). How can I provide the same functionality in my application?
Thank you in advance. It isn't going to be as simple as just the name.
There are also different ways to connect and probably other parameters as well.
SQL Server Enterprise Manager probably uses a discovery protocol. It probably sends one or more messages requesting information and those servers that want to respond.
Note that none of that has anything to do with JDBC and discovering how it does that probably isn't easy. A packet sniffer might help. -
Hello,
I'm looking to uninstall the WSUS server role 3.0 from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. The thing is the database is hosted on a remote MS SQL server. I want to remove the database as well. I would like help for figuring out what I need to do to completely remove
WSUS and its database.
Any kind of help is appreciated! ThanksHi,
WSUS offers limited support for running database software on a computer that is separate from the computer where the rest of WSUS is installed. This section offers step-by-step
instructions for how to install WSUS in this configuration.
If you meet the uninstall issue with the normal uninstall, please post the detail information for us but if you just want to manage the WSUS related SQL data, you can refer
the following KB then delete corresponding database.
In the general procedure, you will create the related WSUS database as below::
Run WSUS Setup from the command line, using the SQLINSTANCE_NAME=servername\instancename command-line option, where servername is the name of the remote computer, and instancename
is the name of the SQL Server instance that you will use for WSUS.
More information:

Hope this helps.

I ran SQL Server 2012 express setup as user with administrator privileges and still it's failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication".
Any and every ideas on how to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.Three weeks passed and I am yet to find a fix for the the failed installation of the database engine on sql server 2012 express installation. I have tried various work-around including uninstalling, deleting all the directory paths, and reinstallation. Still
not able to successfully install sql server 2012 express.
I will greatly appreciate any and every contribution towards resolving this issue. Thanks in advance.

Alias with field name in MS SQL Server
Is it possible that we can define alias for field name in MS SQL Server?
For example:
mytable : Id, Name, Value
Could we define "AnotherName" for "Name" field that we can call it from sql
SELECT anothername from mytableI don't know if you can "permanently" create an alias
without a view or something like that but if you just
want another name when you execute a select do this:
Select name as another name from tableAt least in some databases the syntax for that can vary slightly. So the following might be needed....

Database Mail Fails For SQL Server Agent Jobs / Maintenace plans - Why ?
Database Mail Fails For SQL Server Agent Jobs / Maintenace plans - Why ?
This has been a very common question I have seen relatedt to Database mail and I thought will post here so if you run into this issue, it could be due to one of the following and also have mentioned below how to get around them. Bottom line is datbase mail works fine with SQL Agent jobs and maintenace plans in SP1 on all platforms.
1. If you see this on 64 bit platform and on RTM build, this is a bug that is addressed in SP1.
2. If you see the below error message, it is known issue and this is because of design that requires SQL Agent to restart, if SQL Agent was started before enabling databasemail and setting a new profile. We are evaluating to change this design of not requiring to restart agent for our future release.
Re: 264] An attempt was made to send an email when no email session has been established
This problem will go away after restarting SQL Server Agent in this case. Thanks,
Gops Dwarak, MSFTThis may be related to the fact that DBMail, by default, shuts itself down after 10 minutes of inactivty. If the mail service isn't running, you won't be able to queue up any mail messages.
There may be a built-in mechanism for addressing this problem, but I found that I can detect this situation and start the mail listener before sending db mail. I use the following in stored procs that need to send email.
You could increase the inactivity period for db mail shutdown from 600 seconds to some larger value. It might not make sense to do so, since shutting it down releases its resources back to teh system; if your SQL server only sneds mail infrequently, it might be better to start the mail listener on demand. Someone with more experience than I might want to add their two cents' worth. :-)
/* Check the mail engine. Start the service if is is stopped */
/* -- the DB Mail engine shuts down after 10 minutes (of inactivity) */
/* -- this setting can be changed, but we probably don't need to. */

How can i Migrate a database from DB2 to SQL Server 2008r2.
Hi Gurus,
Kindly help me letting me know the process for migrating the database from DB2 to SQL Server.
1) Is there any way to migrate a database from DB2 to SqlServer. (My assumption is we can not migrate database, if wrong correct me gurus).
2) Or we can only transfer data from that DB2 database to SQL Server (Using SSIS packages).
Please help me knowing the process to migrate the data from DB2 server to MSSQL server. Even am reading the documents available in the web.
Thanks in advance.. :)Microsoft provide a migration assistant for DB2 to SQL Server:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45296
SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) is a free supported tool from Microsoft that simplifies database migration process from DB2 to SQL Server and Azure SQL DB. SSMA automates all aspects of migration including migration assessment analysis, schema and
SQL statement conversion and data migration.
Hope that helps -

Need help trouble shooting Database Gateway for MS SQL Server setup, getting ORA-28546 error
Dear All,
I am trying to setup Oracle Database Gateway for MS SQL Server(I don't have admin access to the MS SQL Server). When I try to test the dblink connection, I get the following error.
I issued select * from dual@xyz;
ORA-28546: connection initialization failed, probable Net8 admin error

2. Oracle DB home directory is /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1, gateway home directory is /u01/gateway.
3. I use the same listener.ora file for both the db and the gateway.

Obviously, I would like to get this setup to work, but I also have couple other questions regarding this setup.
1. When installing the gateway, it asks to run the root.sh script. the root.sh script as for the following.
Enter the full pathname of the local bin directory: [/usr/local/bin]:
The file "dbhome" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n)
[n]: n
The file "oraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n)
[n]: n
The file "coraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n)
[n]: n
is the above answer correct?

Using LV 8.6 to access database created in MS SQL Server Management Studio
I am using Labview 8.6 to access a database created in MS SQL Server Mgmt Studio, using LabSQL ADO utilities. I don't have LV's add-on DB connectivity toolkit, but just the ADO utilities. Can i do it? If yes, how? I have no experience whatsoever in connecting and accessing data from a DB. An example would help.
Thanks,Szi wrote:
As for my opinion you cant access without DB connectivity toolkit.
Nonsense.
With LabSQL, you should first find an on-line SQL tutorial and refer to the Microsoft help files. I would recomend creating a UDL file. This is the connection string you use for the ADO Connection Open function. You might want to to get a little help from the db administrator. You'll certainly need help in getting a login and password.
There are examples that come with LabSQL -
Oracle Database Gateway for MS SQL server
Hi,
we have Oracle Database Appliance.
OS: Oracle Linux 5 x64
DB: 11.2.0.3 enterprise (Oracle Database Gateway for MS SQL server at the same version)
Communication with remote DB is OK, but CPU load is too high without any reason. CPU waste, useless HW load, energy waste.
