Database projects and DBA

Hi,
I am a fresher (OCP certified) and I have no process/project knowledge that what are sizes of datafiles, tempfiles, undo tbs , database sizes, no. of databases, dba teams and the nature of works etc. in actual environment.
I tried google but I am not satisfied. I will really appreciate if anybody share their experience with me.

You don't need to have a working experience to know for one database, you can have only one Undo tablespace active, do you?And when you say you are OCP already-it becomes even more important that you know it. The number of DBA's would depend on the company. The number of the databases would depend on the accounts/projects that your company has. Not sure exactly what are trying to find on Google and about what you are not satisfied in terms of the answers.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2: which version of Visual Studio do I need to keep database projects and SSIS projects in the same solution

    I need to build a solution containing a database project and an integration services project for SQL Server 2008R2.  Apparently, the subset of Visual Studio tools that comes with SQL Server 2008R2 does not include database projects and does not have
    Team Foundation Server support.  Because of those limitations, I am trying to determine which version of Visual Studio will allow me to:
    1. Build a single solution that includes both a database project and an Integration Services project
    2. For the database project, be able to import a database schema from an existing SQL Server 2008 R2 database, do schema compares and update the project from the database and vice versa
    3. For the Integration Services project, be able to deploy the packages to SQL Server Integration Services on SQL Server 2008 R2 (that is, to the msdb database).
    4. Use Team Foundation Server for source control of the whole solution, including both project types.

    Hi G Britton,
    To build a solution containing a database project and an integration services project for SQL Server 2008 R2 and use Team Foundation Server for source control.
     You can choose to install Visual Studio 2008.
    And as you want to utilize Schema compare and/or Data compare functionalities in Visual Studio, you will need to install the
    Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition or Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite.
    In addition, for Visual Studio issues, I would like to recommend you post the question in the
    Visual
    Studio forums to get better support.

  • Database healthchecks and DBA horror stories

    A few questions if I may:
    1) I wondered if any of you could assist. I was looking for some sort of best practices Oracle DBA checklist around “maintenance tasks” and “monitoring tasks”, that a good DBA would do to keep there Oracle databases “healthy”. Microsoft have started putting together the reliability workbooks for some of their products which list recommended best practices when it comes to management (monitoring and maintenance) of their products:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee923724.aspx
    I could do with something similar for Oracle databases. If such exists
    2) Second part of my question is if you have ever experienced any significant issues to your Oracle databases from internal DBA’s/external DBA’s not doing these best practice maintenance/monitoring tasks. I.e. downtime, performance issues. Can you share any horror stories about lack of admin/management that had a knock on effect on the databases health, and any applications that rely on that database. The more horror stories the better if you don’t mind sharing. What didn’t they do what they should have done, and what impact did this have? What common things can DBA’s miss and what impact do they have?
    3) And finally, if you were to review your outsourced Oracle DBA’s maintenance/monitoring independently, what kind of areas would you look to for assurance they are managing your Oracle databases well. Any particular markers? Do you see any common mistakes DBA's making in their management of their database estate?

  • ALM - Visual Studio Database Projects and Data Warehousing

    I have moved onto a team doing data warehousing. In the past I have performed application lifecycle managment using Visual Studio and TFS for web and test projects. I am helping my current team define a plan to start using TFS 2010 and Visual Studio 2012
    to manage our schema and T-SQL code (develop, build, and deploy). I was wondering if there are a set of best pracitices specific to databases with large data volumes on multicoatabase Windows servers. Some of our deployment edge cases involve long running
    data migrations (which we can manage in an ETL tool) and schema upgrades to larger tables. That last one is what I need some guidance on. any guidance on applying ALM best practices to warehouses with larger volumes of data would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Linked Server Causing Reference Error in Database Project

    Good Morning
    I have a database project that will not deploy to my local because of a reference error to a linked server within the code.  I have searched high and low about how to get a linked server recognized within a TFS Database Project to no avail.  I'm
    probably missing something simple, but any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
    I'd like to know how do you deploy your database project, and you use TFS build or something related. If you use TFS build to do continuous deployment, you need to make sure you can build and deploy in local before TFS build.
    Based on your description, you might need to open a new thread in
    SQL Server Data Tools forum for a better response. And update the thread by posting the new thread link here.

  • Trying to add oinstall and dba (for Oracle Database and Enterprise Manager) to my LDAP account

    I want to add groups to my LDAP user account abc. Currently I have uid=243782(abc) gid=10(wheel) groups=1275(nsn-emp),9834(nsn-moh),10(wheel), but I want groups oinstall, oper and dba added.
    According to the database installation document, local os group must include oinstall and dba.
    The following local operating system groups and users are required if you are
    installing Oracle Database:
    ■ The Oracle Inventory group (typically, oinstall)
    ■ The OSDBA group (typically, dba)
    ■ The Oracle software owner (typically, oracle)
    I tried to add abc groups oinstall and dba using root user, but it failed.
    Could you please inform me how to add these groups?

  • Why not generating adf bc projects and components from offline database

    I imported offline database objects from my production database that is big. I would like designing some business components without necessarily the database running and be connected.
    Is it a reason why an adf bc project may necessarily connect to an on line database ?
    Why it is not possible to generate adf bc components from off line database objects ?

    The ADF BC design time has always required a database connection, to be able to test the validity of expert-mode SQL statement for one reason, but not the only one. We have not lifted that requirement in the 11g release.
    I filed ER# 6056701 to track your request. Thanks.

  • &, &&, and @s causing ORACLE Database Project issues And SLOW Run

    Hello I am encountering an issue while "Run"ing functions/sp/packages from an ORACLE DATABASE PROJECT.
    We are supporting a legacy application that utilizes HTP.PRINT. We decided that it would be nice to have it as an Oracle Database Project but when we save the file it is croaking at us.
    We are using
    ODTwithODAC1110720
    Visual Studio 2008
    Oracle 10g r2
    The specific issue happens when an @ is the first line in the file and when utilizing && in javascript (all being emitted from HTP.Print). Now I know we can work around these limitations (escaping the &s and wrapping the line) but is there any way to get these to work in the IDE w/o the escaping and such?
    For instance:
    In visual Studio Create a Function1 as such
    DROP FUNCTION FUNCTION1;
    CREATE FUNCTION FUNCTION1 (
      PARAM1 IN NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
    BEGIN
    HTP.PRINT ('    if (popupStatus == 1 && okDisabled==false) {');
             htp.print('
    <style>
    @media printfooter; {
    }   etc etc etc   ');
      RETURN PARAM1;
    END FUNCTION1;
    /You will get this result:
    Connected.
    ------ Running '***\Project1\Functions\Script1.sql' @**.** ------
    Function dropped.
    SP2-0310: unable to open file "media.sql"
    Enter value for okdisabled:
    Operation canceled by user
    -- this locks the file
    If I go ahead and hit OK (in a new unlocked file)
    SP2-0310: unable to open file "media.sql"
    Enter value for okdisabled: old   5: HTP.PRINT ('      if (popupStatus == 1 && okDisabled==false) {');
    new   5: HTP.PRINT ('      if (popupStatus == 1 ==false) {');
    **/You will notice that when the function is created it just skips the & and @s
    FUNCTION FUNCTION1 (
      PARAM1 IN NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
    BEGIN
    HTP.PRINT ('    if (popupStatus == 1 ==false) {');
             htp.print('
    <style>
    }   etc etc etc   ');
      RETURN PARAM1;
    END FUNCTION1;and just a little insult to injury on this, each "run" takes upwards to 20-25 seconds from Visual studio (this is a deal breaker for us to use the tool -- when SQL Developer takes mere moments) -- is there a configuration setting awry?
    So I guess the questions are these (sorry for the ramble)
    1) How, in the VS 2008 IDE, can we accommdate & and && and @s without escaping/workarounds? (these work fine in developer)
    a) I have noticed that the escape character work around is ONE way ... thus if I have the package body in the Oracle Database Project, add "set escape \ " then escape all of my & and && and @s it works. but... the code is saved in Oracle without the escape characters (understandable) but if it changes in Oracle then I push the changes down I lose all of my escape characters.
    2) Why does each RUN take so long? working in developer & even the Server Explorer edited function are almost instantaneous.
    -- I want to add, during my escape character tests EACH RUN took upwards to 30-45 seconds, so for 4 small simple test cases it was approaching 2 minutes of just save time...
    so far these two shortcomings are barrier for our company to utilize these features (it's hard to try to sell the dept. on anything that doesn't handle escapes well AND -- the big AND -- takes entirely too long to save). any advise?
    thnx
    Edited by: tanging on Jul 1, 2010 4:47 AM

    we can just set the escape character and it works fine,
    set escape '~'
    create or replace ....when/if we have to pull down from production level we'll have to be mindful to change & and @s to have a preceding escape character (and add the set escape to the top) --> which is a step back from SQL Developer which handles this flawlessly.
    now the timing -- I believe it to be a timing issue on our network (therefore I've wasted your time). We have a default shared drive that is anything but speedy and our "default" homes in Visual Studio pointed to the shared drive. While the project/solution were on our local drives - the temp drive was the slow default. Changing that locally seems to have made the timing issue go away. (although on the first save of the body spec after the change and reboot it took 35 seconds but on subsequent runs it Ran in acceptable time limits).

  • What is the use of Database View, maintenace , projection and Help view

    hello friends,
    I created tables..and set check table relation.
    how to create Database View, maintenace , projection and Help view
    phani

    Hi,
    have a look at this.
    4 type of views
    database
    maintainance
    help
    projection view
    check this link as well
    (https://forums.sdn.sap.com/click.jspa?searchID=9904886&messageID=4885135)
    Database views are implemented with an equivalent view on the database.
    Projection views are used to hide fields of a table (only projection).
    Database views should be created if want to select logically connected data from different tables simultaneously.
    Database views implement an inner join.
    Application programs can access the data of a database view using the database interface. (Just as we write select queries on database tables, we can write them for views as well.)
    Includes in Database Views
    An entire table can be included in a database view. In this case all the fields of the included table will become fields of the view (whereby you can explicitly exclude certain fields).
    To include one of the tables in the view, enter character * in field View field, the name of the table to be included in field Table and character * again in field Field name on the View fields tab page of the maintenance screen of the view.
    You can also exclude individual fields of an included table. If you do not want to include a field of the included table in the view, enter - in field View field, the name of the included table in field Table and the name of the field to be excluded in field Field name.
    Inserts with Database Views
    If a database view contains only one single table, data can be inserted in this table with the view .
    You have the following options for the contents of the table fields not contained in the view:
    If the field is defined on the database with NOT NULL as initial value, the field is filled with the corresponding initial value.
    If the field is defined on the database as NOT NULL without initial value, an insert is not possible. This results in a database error.
    If the field is not defined on the database as NOT NULL, there will be a NULL value in this field.
    A maintenance view permits you to maintain the data of an application object together.
    The maintenance status determines which accesses to the data of the underlying tables are possible with the maintenance view.
    Read only: Data can only be read through the view.
    Read, change, delete, insert: Data of the tables contained in the view can be
    changed, deleted, and inserted through the view.
    Read and change: Existing view entries can be changed. However, records
    cannot be deleted or inserted.
    Read and change (time-dependent views): Only entries whose non-time
    dependent part of the key is the same as that of existing entries may be
    inserted.
    Maintenance View ( SE54 )
    You can use a maintenance view to maintain data, which is distributed over several tables, at the same time.
    Maintenance views enable a business-oriented approach to looking at data, while at the same time, making it possible to maintain the data involved. Data from several tables can be summarized in a maintenance view and maintained collectively via this view. That is, the data is entered via the view and then distributed to the underlying tables by the system.

  • Logical Database design and physical database implementation

    Hi
    I am an ORACLE DBA basically and we started a proactive server dashboard portal ,which basically reports all aspects of our infrastructure (Dev,QA and Prod,performance,capacity,number of servers,No of CPU,decomissioned date,OS level,Database patch level) etc..
    This has to be done entirely by our DBA team as this is not externally funded project.Now i was asked to do " Logical Database design and physical Database
    implementation"
    Even though i know roughly what's that mean(like designing whole set of tables in star schema format) ,i have never done this before.
    In my mind i have a rough set of tables that can be used but again i think there is lot of engineering involved in this area to make sure that we do it properly.
    I am wondering you guys might be having some recommendations for me in the sense where to start?are there any documents online , are there any book on this topic?Are there any documents which explain this phenomena with examples ?
    Also exactly what is the difference between logical database design vs physical database implementation
    Thanks and Regards

    Logical database design is the process of taking a business or conceptual data model (often described in the form of an Entity-Relationship Diagram) and transforming that into a logical representation of that model using the specific semantics of the database management system. In the case of an RDBMS such as Oracle, this representation would be in the form of definitions of relational tables, primary, unique and foreign key constraints and the appropriate column data types supported by the RDBMS.
    Physical database implementation is the process of taking the logical database design and translating that into the actual DDL statements supported by the target RDBMS that will create the database objects in a target RDBMS database. This will generally include specific physical implementation details such as the specification of tablespaces, use of specialised indexing (bitmap, clustered etc), partitioning, compression and anything else that relates to how data will actually be physically stored inside the database.
    It sounds like you already have a physical implementation? If so, you can reverse engineer this implementation into a design tool such as SQL Developer Data Modeller. This will create a logical design by examining the contents of the Oracle data dictionary. Even if you don't have an existing database, Data Modeller is a good tool to use as a starting point for logical and even conceptual/business models.
    If you want to read anything about logical design, "An Introduction to Database Systems" by Date is always a good starting point. "Database Systems - A Practical Approach to Design, Implementation and Management" by Connolly & Begg is also an excellent reference.

    The issue is the defaulting of the VisualStudio version in the project file to 11 (VS2012) I expect your build agent only has VS2013.

  • Projects and events are empty!

    Before I call support, maybe someone can help. I created a project and finished it, all locally (no external drives involved). The next morning, when I opened FCPX, the event and project NAMES were there, but clicking on them yielded NOTHING. There was no evidence of any of my imported media, either, although my hard drive still showed 10GB less space, so it was still on there somewhere. After uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX and mounting some random libraries from the "Final Cut Backups" folder, the projects and timelines reappeared, but ALL the clips were missing, and attempts to relink them led nowhere. So I RE-IMPORTED all the footage in a new library/event, and when I dragged the event into the library where the "blank" project lived, all the clips mysteriously re-populated and all was right again. This morning, opened up FCPX and the SAME THING happened. Only this time, I can't get any project/timeline to load from ANY library (including every single "backup" library). So I'm panicking that even if I re-import all the footage for a third time, I won't have a project for the clips to "find" and I'll have to start over. WHAT IS GOING ON???
    Thanks!
    Bill

    UPDATE: The event has returned but it is still empty. I opened the Console and the following error is repeated hundreds of times starting at the time of the original crash:
    1/5/14 11:49:54.234 AM iMovie[34085]: CoreData: error: (3850) I/O error for database at /Volumes/Media 2/iMovie/iMovie Library.imovielibrary/Mid Winter Bluegrass Show/CurrentVersion.imovieevent.  SQLite error code:3850, 'not an error' errno:9

  • Java framework/toolkit for POJO, database persistence and XML

    Hi all,
    I've been wondering if there's a toolkit or framework for developing Java program (could be standalone Java program, EJBs etc.)
    I surfed around casually and found some but there isn't any detailed description of what and how each framework/toolkit does. So I hope to ask around if you've anything that you have used before and would like to point to me to look further.
    Given the huge number of open source toolkits, libraries and frameworks out there, it can be quite confusing as to which one is more suitable for me. Also with Sun's move into JDO and Java Persistence API, things become more messy and complicated - there isn't any clear leader in this area and things are starting to change with the inclusion of JDO which seems to be the future standard persistence API to use.
    So far, I've only worked with Hibernate for database persistence before. So I'm wondering if there're other options such as Hibernate with XDoclet, Castor and Spring framework etc. that can easily transform Plain Old Java Objects (POJO) -- hopefully using Java Reflection w/o using mapping XML files like in Hibernate -- into SQL for database persistence and XML text data and vice-versa. The current problem is that I've been spending tons of time writing code to transform data in Java objects into XML (using my own format) and also doing mapping files for Hibernate.
    I am hoping for something simple like:
    Object o = new Object();
    o.setProperty = "something";
    String xml = o.toXML(); // Convert object to XML text.
    o.save(); // Save to database.
    // The reverse: Parse XML into object and load from database
    Object o = new Object();
    o.fromXML(xml);
    o.load();
    // Properties should be initialized from database or XML.
    Anything similar to this out there?

    Hi,
    Just to share what I've found after surfing a bit more on this issue to promote more discussion on this area.
    For mapping of Java objects to XML, we can try looking more at Castor and JAXB.
    For database persistence to/from Java objects, look at Hibernate and JDO.
    There is this Hydrate project (hydrate.sourceforge.net) that I do not know where it fits in still. But it is supposed to do data transformation and mapping between Java objects, XML and database representation.
    Fyi.

  • Creating mdf file from a database project in Visual Studio for Web

    I am very new to database programming in Visual Studio and SQL Server Express LocalDB. I went through a walk through of setting up a database project (using visual studio express 2013 for web and SQL Server Express LocalDB), adding tables and entering data
    and everything worked fine:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms233763.aspx
    Then I wanted to move on to trying to build a simple application to access this database so I looked into the following tutorial:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171890.aspx
    In a nutshell the tutorial says to add a new datasource and navigate to the database file, and it is looking for an .mdf file.
    The database project that I created does not have an mdf file in it, only sql file, visual studio project, dbmdl file, options file, source browser database, etc.
    How do I create this .mdf file, that step didn't seem to be explained in the first tutorial. I tried running the project, but didn't see any build options for creating the .mdf file. Again, sorry for the absolute beginner question.

  • SAP NetWeaver MDM - Project and Bachelor Thesis

    Hello,
    I am a German student of business information systems. I will write my project and bachelor thesis about u201Chow to synchronize and interchange the master data of an existing non-sap portal, with an existing sap erp systemu201D.
    Therefore I would like to use the SAP NetWeaver Platform with SAP NetWeaver MDM. The thesis shall consist of two parts. First, the project thesis shall contain the requirements analysis and the specification. The bachelor thesis shall contain the implementation of these systems.
    But there is one big problem. Is there any possibility to get SAP NetWeaver for educational propose, e.g. for free or for a free trial? At the download area of the sdn webpage, I found an SAP NetWeaver 7.0 u2013 Java Trial Version. Does this NetWeaver-Version include the Master Data Management Component? Does I need any other SAP-Systems to exchange the Master Data between these two Systems?
    Thanks a lot,
    Christian

    Hi Christian,
    you can get a trial version of MDM as a SAP customer (in Germany via your SAP software distributor). If you have only access to a SAP university system I don't think you will get access to MDM and XI (at least they don't have it at my university). But of course you can ask your professor or SAP representative maybe they can help you. As far as I know all SAP university systems in Germany are hosted centrally in Munich and I don't think that they also provide such special solutions like MDM.
    Doing a similar job in my thesis I can only recommend you to do this project only then if you have definitely access to all needed systems and having some people around with knowledge in additonal needed tools like XI or administration of SAP systems. Doing it all at your own without having SAP knowledge in the important points (system and database administration, software deployment, XI) is not realistic in a 5 month period when you have to build a SAP system landscape on your own in top of your project.
    Hope that helps. BR, bd
