Database query problem...

I have written a piece of code that queries a database (PETDOGS) for a particular field (BREED) when particular swing item gets focus. The code works fine when the SQL statement queries a numerical field but not when its looking for a string field.
So I have two fields: AGE (an integer)
NAME (a string)
This is the code segment I use to connect to the databse and query Age...
Class.forName("org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDriver");
con = DriverManager.getConnection(dbURL,user,passwd);
stmt = con.createStatement();
ResultSet queryResults = stmt.executeQuery("select BREED from PETDOGS where AGE<" + age);
while (queryResults.next()) {
String dogBreed = queryResults.getString("BREED");
System.out.println(dogBreed);
}con, stmt, dbURL, user, passwd, age are all predefines (this is in a try segment) and this works fine.
But when I change this to query NAME instead of AGE....
Class.forName("org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDriver");
con = DriverManager.getConnection(dbURL,user,passwd);
stmt = con.createStatement();
ResultSet queryResults = stmt.executeQuery("select BREED from PETDOGS where NAME='Rex'");
while (queryResults.next()) {
String dogBreed = queryResults.getString("BREED");
System.out.println(dogBreed);
}I get the following error....

Anyone have any ideas? Is this an isse with my SQL?

the variable 'age' is a user input value taken from a seperate swing field with the line: int age = Integer.parseInt(userInAge.getText());.
Interestingly, this is line 384! How could this possible be affecting the second piece of code, that doesn't even use this variable...You should know best why it affects because you have a better idea of your application flow.
It's generally a bad idea to assume that humans are sensible beings who will always give you the expected input in the correct format. Better validate that age before you try parsing it.

    Hi,
    as Daan said, set the variable in Advanced tab but not on loglevel..
    because, our problem is to bypass the bi-server cache.
    Do this:
    1. Go to Advanced tab.
    2. In Prefix field(scroll down to see this field) , enter this:
    SET DISABLE_CACHE_HIT = 1;
    Note: Make sure that you're ended up above statement with semicolon and do not click on Set SQL option...
    3. Save report, then run it..
    4. After you see the query, i recommend you to take take out that prefix tag then save it again..

    Try using '###CreateODBCDate(Form.DateOfBirth)###'. Access is
    strange on
    handling dates. It has a been a while since I have used
    Access so it could
    be as simple as wrapping it single quotes as well. I am
    assuming the
    "<!-----------" wasn't intended, but I could be wrong.

  • Generate an xml file from Database query results

    Hi, can anyone help me out with this problem I'm having. What are the steps in creating an xml file directly from the results of a database query. I currently have a very simply process that queries a database via a partner link. The query returns the data but it's from this point that I am stuck. I need to create an xml file with the data along with the xml tags. I've looked at dozens of tutorials with no luck.
    I would greatly appreciate help with this.
    bpel rookie

    Should be quite simple.
    Create another partnerlink, configure it to use the file adapter, and write to an XML file. In this case you need to create an XML Schema (.xsd) of the file you want to create.
    Before you write to the file, either add assign steps to copy individual attributes or use a transform activity to convert from the database format to the file (xml) format.

    Any help?
    Thanks!!!

    Ok. I have figured out how to place the condition (variable value) inside a concatentated string. So my final result is the actual XPATH Query-Database statement. But the problem is it is being returned as a String. How can I turn that final string into the XPATH expression I need? I suspect another <COPY> block could pull this off but I am not sure how to do it.

  • Error Executing Database Query - Help!

    I have a cfquery code that looks like this:

        </CFSWITCH>
        ORDER BY systemcode
        </CFQUERY>
    This works perfectly in CF 5.  However, when running in CF 8 I am getting the error message:
    Error Executing Database Query.FUNCTION mydatabase.LEN does not exist The specific sequence of files included or processed is: /home/httpd/vhosts/somedomain.com/httpdocs/reference/systemcode.cfm, line: 24
    (that refers to the above cfquery)
    "mydatabase" is the name of the database and LEN is a function.    It's checking for the length of systemcode to be 2 or 4, if they are then check if the value of #CAT# is 1 and that the first 2 characters is between 01 and 05 then select the row.  I don't know why it works with CF5 but not CF8?  It's driving me nuts.  Any help is appreciated.

    I just don't see why
    all of a sudden it doesn't work with CF8 and MySQL,
    If you changed databases, that is the source of the problem, not upgrading CF.  MySQL will not understand MS Access specific functions and vice versa. Do not expect queries written for one database type to automatically work with another.  While there are sql standards, every database is different. It is quite common for database vendors to have totally different function names, data types and even syntax. You will need to throrougly review your database queries and convert any Access specific syntax, data types, etcetera to the MySQL equivalents.
    Are there MySQL equivalent for these two functions (TRIM and
    LEN)?
    Yes. See the string functions section in the online mySQL docs.
    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/string-functions.html
    I don't konw there was a TRIM and LEN in MS Access
    database.  I guess I was mixing them.
    Yes. It is a little confusing because both CF and MS Access have those functions.  In this specific case you were using the Access functions, not CF.
            http://www.techonthenet.com/access/functions/index_alpha.php
    >> Yes, I did put a
    CFLOCATION inside the cfquery.  Never encounter that
    scenario so I didn't know if it works.
    Well if you are using the code, it should be something you have tested. So you know how it behaves. But CFLOCATION really does not belong inside a database query.

  • Database Connection problem please help

    Hi,
    I have a servlet that basically connects to the database if the userid and password is correct.
    I have a "login.html" page where the user enters the "userid" and "password".The servlet does the checking and grants access to the user.
    My question is as follows.As soon as I startup tomcat type in the url login.html,then press the submit button,(both the fields are blank) the servlet says "ok" this is this information is present in the database.It should say "not ok".Hope I question is clear.The code for the servlet is given below.
    package package1.structure;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.sql.*;

        System.out.println("Driver loaded successfully");
       }//close try

      System.out.println("*"+pass+"*");
      String message = null;
    try{

      System.out.println("Successfully connected to database");
      PreparedStatement pstmt;
      pstmt = con.prepareStatement("SELECT username,password FROM users" + " WHERE username ='" + user + "'" +
      " AND password='" + pass + "'");
      ResultSet rs = pstmt.executeQuery();
      if(rs.next())
          username = rs.getString(1);
           password = rs.getString(2);
    if (username != null && password != null && user.equals(username) && pass.equals(password) ){
        message ="ok";
        PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
        out.print("<B>" + message + "</B>");
        //response.sendRedirect ("http://localhost:8080/thankyou.html");
    }//closes the if statement
    else {
         message="not ok";

    catch (SQLException e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    }//closes 2ndcatch
    }//close doPost
    }//close classKindly let me know ASAP.
    Regarding the database.The fields in the database are "username" and "password" and it has one tuple
    "xyz" and "xyz"
    Hope that my question is rightly put.
    Thanking you
    AS

    Actually, I think the servlet is doing the right thing
    by printing "ok". A quick glance at your code tells
    me that username and password are both members of your
    servlet class and initialized to "". Neither is null,
    and both are blank.
    If your HTML page sends user and pass as blank
    strings, you'll do a database query for those values.
    If they don't appear in the database, your ResultSet
    will have no rows and the username and password data
    members will not be updated.
    When you get to your if test, neither username nor
    password is null and both are equal to the values
    passed in from the HTML. Hence the "ok".
    If you initialize your username and password members
    to null this might still work.
    Be sure to set them back to null when you finish the
    test.
    If you take all that JDBC code out of the servlet and
    isolate it into its own class, you can test it out by
    feeding it valid and invalid username and password
    combinations. Once you've got that working perfectly,
    you can just have the servlet instantiate your
    database object and call its methods. If you have any
    problems after that point, you know they're due to the
    servlet and not the database interactions.
    Right now the database and servlet are confounded.
    Separate them out and you might make faster progress.
    - MODHello,
    Thanks for the reply.Will consider your points for a proper coding.Will keep posting.

  • How to display result of database query in JFrame?

    How to display result of oracle database query in JFrame?
    This is part of my code:
    String username, password;

    Forget what url, username & password are. Is there any problem with my code?
    What should be next if I want to display result of the query in a table in JFrame?Thx !

    How to create JTable with unknown no. of rows? How to get no. of rows of a query?
    I saw the demo of creating JTable on java.sun.com but the the table has a certain no. of rows which is not applicable to my case.
    Suppose the result of query is a table with 3 attributes so there are 3 columns in the table.
    R contains the result of the query.
    Should it be something like this if I want to create JTable of the query?
    How to make n rows of {R.getString(1),R.getString(2),R.getString(3)};?
    public SimpleTableDemo() {
    super(new GridLayout(1,0));
    String[] columnNames = {"A",

    Object[][] data = {R.getString(1),R.getString(2),R.getString(3)};
    I can't run it because I still can't debug my code which is said before.

    My coldfusion service crashes intermitantly and when I check
    the application logs the error that I see for the time frame is the
    one below. Does anyone know where I might begain to solve this?
    Thanks!
    Error Executing Database

    to establish connection The specific sequence of files included or
    processed is: E:\wwwroot\lifeworks\default.cfm

    I'm no expert, but thought I would try to be helpful.
    I was getting this same error on a regular basis.
    The short term fix was to restart the ODBC server service.
    The long term fix was twofold:
    1. I recreated the ODBC connection in ColdFusion
    Administrator to use the system connection (I was using the SA and
    PW for login).
    2. I created a second user ODBC connection as well as the
    system one under ODBC in Windows Server 2003.
    I haven't had the problem since.
    I also read a pretty good set of "stuff" to try from the help

    Hope this helps.

    I have set up a new server with CF MX 6.1. I have moved code

  • EMC -Database Query

    Hi Experts,
    An out of box Question, but i expect that someone might have faced this problem and has been successful in searching the way out of it.
    Am getting a message on running the following symmetric command to take archive log backup.
    symioctl archive log
    On issuing the above command , it returns me this message :
    "Database query support is not installed"
    Can anyone help me? How can i install database query support ?
    Thanks in advance,,,,
    MB

    This is the technique that I use to count rows:
    Quick trick that I use is
    1. make sure that your Statement is type_scroll_insensitive:
    connection.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,
    ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);2. move your cursor to the last row(after executing your query)
    resultset.last();3. get the row number:
    int numberOfRows = resultset.getRow(); /*returns the number of rows*/4. set the cursor back to the beginning:
    resultset.beforeFirst();5. ready to process the rows as usual.
    This technique has a drawback though:
    a scrollable resultset has less performance than non-scrollable
    hope this might help,
    Jamie

  • How to get List Item attachments name without write any custom code or any database query?

    Hi,
    How to get List Items attachments name without write any custom code or any database query?

    You can get it from Rest,
    There are 2 options,
    1) create a 'Result Source' which has a search query for that List which has attachments
     - Use rest query to get the 'Filename' , it will have the attachment file name
    For example, if the result source id is : 73e6b573-abf8-4407-9e5f-8a85a4a95159 , then the query will be
    http://[site URL]/_api/search/query?querytext='*'&selectproperties='Title,Path,FileExtension,SecondaryFileExtension,Filename'&sourceid='73e6b573-abf8-4407-9e5f-8a85a4a95159'&startrow=0&rowLimit=100
    You can refine the query, be giving proper 'querytext'
    2) Use the List rest api
    For example if your list guid is :38d524a1-e95c-439f-befd-9ede6ecd242e
    You can get he attachments for 1st item using this
    http://[Site URL]/_api/lists(guid'38d524a1-e95c-439f-befd-9ede6ecd242e')/items(1)/AttachmentFiles

    The full error Error Executing Database Query. [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Invalid object name 'LittleBobbyTables'. (table name withheld)
    This is an intermittent failure, the code occassionally works fine, then does not. At first I suspected a DNS issue, but it doesn't seem to be the case since test DSN's to AName record (server name), Cname alias, and IP address DSN all work... so now I am wondering if it is a load issue - and my question -
    How do I test this hypothesis? How do I monitor load on this DSN or what CF services should I monitor on the server.

    Also, we are on CF 9                                      (9,0,0,251028), Win Ser 2008, separate Win Ser 2008 w/ SQL 2008r2
    I just reviewed http://forums.adobe.com/message/3396333 and saw a few different ideas to investigate re: maintaining connections (connection pools) and concurrent connections.
    The 2 tables kicking errors are core tables, so I'll look into connections as a possible issue.
    But, I am still interested in ideas on how I would monitor this problem (currently working on setting up an ODBC Log to review.

  • Returning database query results under Apache Axis

    I'm trying to write a web service that will return the results of a standard database query. Does anyone have any pointers on what sort of data structure I should convert my ResultSet to that would be best suited to run under Apache Axis? Currently I am trying to use a String[][][], which Axis can serialize and encode fine, but seems to have problems decoding. If someone has some client-side source that is able to receive a String[][][], please post it, as I would rather not have to change the web services around if at all possible.

    According to IBM, the best way to do this is by returning an array of a complex type. Using this idea, I changed my services to return an array of DBRow objects, which I wrote for this purpose. DBRow is a simple class that contains a single private String[] with get and set accessors, in accordance with the JavaBeans standard. If you need more details, just respond to this topic.
