Database shut down and file systems are still busy

We have been copying our production DB over to a reporting DB for the last 3 years. The process we use on the reporting database is: shutdown the DB ABORT, restart it, then shutdown immediate. Then we umount the file systems and copy the production over using a Flex Clone on the NETAPP, remount the file systems and start the database back up. We used to shut down the listener which does not share the oracle binaries on the unix system but lately have left the listener up because other DB's use it. Every so often after shutting down the report database in prep for the copy, the file system that contains the binaries is busy and we can't unmount the ORACLE binaries.
So my question is how does the listener know if the database is up or down? Is it reading something on the volumes we're trying to unmount to see if the database is up? We have users that schedule jobs in odd hours and was wondering if them hitting the listener and even though the database is down it's making the file systems busy?
Any help is appreciated.

Listener is NEVER involved with any ongoing packet exchange between client & the DB.
Listener takes original connection request & if the DB is up passes the request to the DB.
After this initial handoff, the listener has NO more involvement with packet exchange between DB & client

I would recommend downloading CCleaner and running it on your computer to clean it up a little bit. That may help to resolve some of your issues.
Here is a link to the download: CCleaner
Also, are you running any kind of Malware or Virus protection on your computer? Both of those can cause issues with how your computer operates.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file.

Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file. The error message reads "cannot complete your request because of a program error" -- it is a very large file (I have been saving it all along) and I had just "flattened layers" and went to open up a new, blank photo file when it shut down. Is there anyway to get this file to open? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (p.s. after reading a couple of similar threads, I have a feeling it's hopeless. But I'd also like to know WHY this might have happened!) Thanks in advance!

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and for sharing the article--I did panic. Here are the details of my system:
    Model: HP p7-1247c
Processor: AMD A8-3820 APU with Radeon HD Graphics
Installed Memory: 8 GB (7.48 usable)
    System Type: 64-bit
    Windows 7 Home Premium
I am using Photoshop CS3. It seems that I can work on photos and save them. But I am unable to open them back up. I have tried saving the files as psd and tiff with the same result. The error message is:  "cannot complete your request because of a program error"
The interesting thing is that I can open up InDesign and "place" the psd file within InDesign (then export and save as a jpeg). So I don't think the files are necessarily corrupted. I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it last night, but there's no change.
If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Or, should I repost my question with this more complete info? Thank you!

I am trying to use the trial creative cloud software on a PC windows 8.1 - I've downloaded and removed Photoshop CC 2014 two times - every time I open the file it says there is a problem and it shuts down and closes. I can open indesign and maybe other apps but photoshop no. Any ideas?

I don't think I can access the crash report? Excuse the ignorant questions I'm about to make am a relative tech novice.
Soo - as mentioned every time I open photoshop it crashes - it just says there's an error and the program will shut down and if there's a solution windows will notify me. Then nothing...
I've tried to look in photoshop files for the detailed crash report & the system event viewer but cannot find a file with those names. I've also looked in the windows files for files with those names but cannot find them either - so I don't know where to look.
    Any guidance would be great.

Can't get MAC to shut down and start up via the schedule button in system preferences energy saver. Is there another way?

    Try this to start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • After updating my iPhone 5s to iOS 7.0.5., it has shut down and i still can't turn it back on!

After updating my iPhone 5s to iOS 7.0.5., it has shut down and i still can't turn it back on! I can't even install iTunes on my computers! Yesterday evening I updated it but it didn't work, so i tried to reinstall it and there was written that that i couldn't install iTunes on that computer. So this morning I've tried to install it to another computer but it says the same.. Can someone help me, please?

Are you uninstalling just iTunes?  Because if so, you actually have to uninstall five separate programs, and THEN reinstall.

  • Problems shutting down and getting 'Error -39 when trying to open my files

After working all evening using my Macbook Pro, I close out all my programs and shut down the computer.
However, the computer refuses to shut down. The screen freezes and just sits there. After about 10 minutes of waiting I eventually hold down the power button to shut the computer off.
When I restart the MacBook Pro and try to open the file I was working on, I get the following error. 'While attempting to access [FILE], the file manager reported an error -39.'
    Why does this keep happening?
MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Ram MHz DDR3
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Finale 2010
    Logic Studio 9
    Yamaha PSR-310 via Midi Interface
    null

I don't think you're having an Apple hard disk issue, because your other applications are working without problems.
I believe you are getting the corrupted file(s) (End of file, Error -39) because you are powering off the computer before the application and the computer have completely shut down.
I can't tell you why it is happening, but I suspect that the Finale application is being extremely slow to shut down, and it is leaving the '.mus' file open until it quits.
*Kostby, thanks so much for your reply. I actually work for a software company, so I asked a few people around here and they agree with you. For some reason, the application is taking a very, very long time to quit, and it's causing the computer to keep running instead of shutting down.*
Perhaps some file was corrupted in the old version of the Finale application was carried over with the upgrade? Have you tried reinstalling the application?
*I haven't, but this is a good idea. I will completely remove the program and start over.*
    Hardware...
I notice that the keyboard dates from 2006/2007.
*Actually, it's from 1993 (time flies...)*
Is the midi interface Firewire or USB?
    USB
Does the midi interface ever cause an error or a 'hang' with or without the keyboard?
*Not that I'm aware of. I haven't used it in awhile, and it's not been connected to the computer in weeks.*
Are there software drivers needed to make the Midi interface work with the Mac.
*No, I simply plugged it in and it worked. No extra software or drivers needed.*
Are the drivers old? (e.g. 10.4.x or 10.5.3)
    N/A
Have you tried saving the file to a USB flash drive, rather than a physical hard disk?
*I haven't, but I'll need to save a few tonight if I do a reinstall of Finale.*
Powering off vs suspending vs leaving it run...
Do you get the 'spinning beachball' (spindump) when Finale apparently hangs?
*No spinning beachball. The desktop simply freezes...*
What happens if you leave it on for an hour or overnight after the apparent 'hang'?
*Never done that. Longest I've left it alone during the 'hang' has been about 15 minutes.*
Does the screen ever come back and let you use the computer again?
*After 15 minutes I would hit the power button and force it to shut off. I've never allowed it to go on for this long. I just thought if it didn't come back after 15 minutes it wasn't ever coming back.*
Does the file corruption occur when you suspend the application by closing the lid, rather than shutting it off?
*I've never just closed the lid on my Macbook Pro. I've always either set it to sleep or shut down and waited for it to do so before closing the lid.*
Thanks again for the great suggestions. I will try them all this evening when I get home from work.
    Best,
    Dana
