Database system was not properly shut down

Dear Mac community,
I have just repaired a friends 800 MHz 17" Flat Panel Display iMac... Somehow the hard drive had become badly corrupted and the system was frequently shutting itself down and freezing with kernel panics as a result. I managed to recover my friends data using Data Rescue II and after using Disk Warrior managed to do an Erase & Install of Mac OS X (10.4.4).
The iMac appears to be fine now except for one worrying thing that I have noticed in the console each time after restarting:
Mac OS X Version 10.4.4 (Build 8G32)

LOG: database system was not properly shut down; automatic recovery in progress
LOG: ReadRecord: record with zero length at 0/87908C

LOG: database system is ready
Does anyone have an idea what this might be and how I can resolve the issue??
The systems performance doesn't appear to be affected in anyway however it looks and sounds ominous.
One other small thing I have noticed is that the iMac won't automatically put itself into sleep mode despite it being set to in the Energy Saver System Preferences. There are no external hardware devices attached such as a printer, firewire device, USB hub etc. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM and this appears to have had no effect.
Any advice / suggestions greatly appreciated!!
Many thanks,
Justin

  • Waking iMac often reports devices not properly shut down.

Intel 27" iMac. Often when my wife's computer wakes after sleeping, all the attached devices report they were not properly ejected. Except that they were never ejected. For some reason, going to sleep causes the devices to think the computer is shut down? Devices include hard drives, Kindle. Haven't seen this with the iPhone. I'm going to see if changing the computer sleep settings to see if that makes any difference. Any other ideas?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

When I specified control_files clause in init.ora I was getting above error, so I tried removing the same but still faced the same error.
Can anybody help me resolving the problem ... ???

thanksyou should be able to do the following on windows from the command line
oradim -delete -sid sampledbthen remove the D:\ORACLE_10G\DATABASE\ folder from the filesystem (assuming there are only files relating to your db in there.
finally remove the D:\ORACLE_10G\ADMIN\SAMPLEDB folder structure assuming it exists.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem – the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
Edit out excessive repeats and personal information, if any.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search the archived log, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs – they're very long and not helpful.

I had a very similar problem, error 4251.  (look in your log you will see that error)  Since I finally fixed my problem, I thought I would see if I can help someone else.
What I found is that I lost burn ability in both iTunes AND Windows.  Like you did.  I did some digging and found that this wasn't hardware related at all.  In fact, this boils down to a registry key getting messed up.  (sigh) Yeah.  It causes the system to get a bad 'handle'.
OK, here's what to try.  Go to this Microsoft KB article.  Scroll down and find the *manual* instructions for Vista.  Delete the registry key that it specifies.  Reboot. Now verify that you can burn in Windows.  (If you have a RW disc, do a disc erase, or just try and burn from Windows Media Player.)  If that is working now,  you're on the right track.
Now the issue is that iTunes will still be broken.  Go and install the latest Gear driver.  (I know you may have done it, but do it again.)  Now follow the intructions in this Apple KB article to verify the "GEARAspiWDM" info is back there in the registry.  Now reboot.  Try and burn in iTunes.
    I hope this helps.

  • Error Message: itunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import CDs

I am using Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 and currently iTunes v8.1
Whenever I start iTunes, a message window pops up saying:
"itunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn cds, you need to reinstall iTunes."
I can click OK, and iTunes will continue to load normally. It also appears to work normally. I can put in CDs and it will import the music off of them.
I have tried to reinstall iTunes, and have even upgraded to the latest versions whenever they've come out (I've had the problem for several months).
Using information I found on the internet, including apple.com, I tried re-installing the GEARS drivers, but with no luck.
I have tried foolin' around with the registry, specifically the entry noted in the GEARS driver pages, altering UpperFilters and deleting LowerFilters, still no luck. Perhaps I'm not doing this correctly? In fact, if I delete both Upper and Lower Filters, upon restarting Windows, I will not have either of my CD/DVD drives showing up in Windows explorer. Further, at the initial stage, I did not have an UpperFilters key, or string. My LowerFilters string has in it, ElbyCDFL, AnyDVD, PxHelp20, ElbyDelay, and MxlW2k.
I believe all of these programs have been on my system for some time.
I am not at all sure what may have changed on my system to cause this error to occur, as I said, it's been several months.
    Thanks in advance,
    Walt D in LV

I had the same problem until I repaired iTunes.
Start --> Control Panel --> Uninstall a Program --> Click on iTunes --> Choose Repair at the top --> Allow change to be made
    Hopefully that will help.

  • Itunes was not properly installed

On opening Itunes i get the message "Itunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CD's you need to reinstall Itunes". I am able to import a CD without any problem but not able to burn a CD. I have done a clean uninstall by removing Itunes, Quicktime, Apple software update, Apple mobile device support, Bonjour and Apple application support. I have now tried this three times. I understand that it could be a problem with the GearAspiwdm.sys driver. I don't appear to have this driver installed. I have tried the gear support site and downloaded the driver installer but don't seem able to locate the gear driver anywhere on the system. Can any one help? I would be eternally grateful!
When i managed to load the gear drivers my PC would not recognise any CD/DVD drive on my system.

Well, after a reinstall, it obviously works again... But the question is: for how long. The last time this solved this issue, it remained solved for just under a week. So, if it still works in just over a week, I will consider the issue solved.

  • ITunes reports the following on startup: "iTunes was not properly..."

All of a sudden whenever I start iTunes it gives me an error message telling me that "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes".
I've read and did everything that other threads like this have suggested without success:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2256415&tstart=0
I have uninstalled iTunes and Apple Application Support software, deleted folders, rebooted, re-installed and still get this message.
Any ideas what else might be going on? I'm running Windows XP Pro (32-bit) on an HP laptop with all the latest Windows and Apple updates.

    Whatatrip,
First let me state that I have been in your shoes, where you're at, for more than a year with no help from anyone. I followed all the suggestions I could find, as you did, and got nowhere. So I feel your pain, my brother.
Today, I felt like I heard angels singing and saw the light of heaven (I'm a writer, forgive the embellishments) when I finally - after another three hours spent - got it working.
I have x64 Win7 now, but I've had this problem for ages, since XP, and this is what I finally did to get rid of it. I don't know whether all of it is necessary, but I do know that it worked.
    1. Remove ALL Apple products - iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Software Updater, Bonjour, EVERYTHING. I used the standard "Remove programs" through windows to do this. Anything that had an Apple, Inc. tag went bye-bye. Note: I also removed everything Apple-related from my hard drive (not including movies, music, etc). This includes the "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" folder. Do a search for anything with iTunes in the folder or filename and toss it. You may not get rid of everything right away, but do it again later (see below) just to be sure.
    2. Followed the instructions here (http://www.gearcdr.com/wiki/index.php?title=DRIVERS:Windows_-_Updating,_removing,_64_bit_versions,_etc#Manual_Removal_.E2.80.9332-bit) to remove all GEAR drivers from my system. I used 64-bit, but you can probably get similar results with any of the steps suggested.
    3. Use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to fix any lingering registry errors/problems. I had to run the registry cleaner SEVEN TIMES in a row to clear out everything. Make sure you run this more than once, until it says "No issues found."
    4. Reboot.
    5. Run CCleaner again. And again, and again, until it says "No issues found." Remove any trace remnants of iTunes on your HDD (misc folders, etc as above).
    6. Download latest standalone install for iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) and GEAR Drivers (http://www.gearcdr.com/support/drivers.php).
    7. Install iTunes (do NOT run when finished). Install Gear Drivers. *IMPORTANT NOTE:* When I ran the install for these drivers, it asked me whether I wanted to modify, repair or remove the drivers. I selected repair, and the install completed.
    8. Reboot.
    9. Run iTunes.
Lo and behold, it worked. I can burn once more. I sincerely hope this helps you, and if not, know that there are those out there who understand and can commiserate.

I have reloaded FF on my virus/malware free computer but FF will not completely shut down.
    Very annoying.

    Hello,
Try opening in [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] and see if the browser closes properly after opening in that. Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes). Since Firefox has trouble closing, make sure that it is not running in your Task Manager before opening in Safe Mode.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>
    [[Image:Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win]]
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds.''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
