Database VS Data warehousing

pls help me in knowing the differences between database and data warehousing in detail
send me links and PDF if u have
thanks

Hi,
A data base is a structured collection of records or data. A computer database relies upon software to organize the storage of data. The software models the database structure in what are known as database models.
A data warehouse is a repository of an organization's electronically stored data. Data warehouses are designed to facilitate reporting and analysis. This classic definition of the data warehouse focuses on data storage. However, the means to retrieve and analyze data, to extract, transform and load data, and to manage the dictionary data are also considered essential components of a data warehousing system. Many references to data warehousing use this broader context. An expanded definition for data warehousing includes business intelligence tools, tools to extract, transform, and load data into the repository, and tools to manage and retrieve metadata.

    Hi Ranjith,
A data warehouse is, primarily, a record of an enterprise's past transactional and operational information, stored in a database designed to favour efficient data analysis and reporting (especially OLAP). Data warehousing is not meant for current, "live" data.
A database is a collection of information stored in a computer in a systematic way, such that a computer program can consult it to answer questions. The software used to manage and query a database is known as a database management system (DBMS). The properties of database systems are studied in information science.

  • ALM - Visual Studio Database Projects and Data Warehousing

I have moved onto a team doing data warehousing. In the past I have performed application lifecycle managment using Visual Studio and TFS for web and test projects. I am helping my current team define a plan to start using TFS 2010 and Visual Studio 2012
to manage our schema and T-SQL code (develop, build, and deploy). I was wondering if there are a set of best pracitices specific to databases with large data volumes on multicoatabase Windows servers. Some of our deployment edge cases involve long running
data migrations (which we can manage in an ETL tool) and schema upgrades to larger tables. That last one is what I need some guidance on. any guidance on applying ALM best practices to warehouses with larger volumes of data would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Data warehousing question/best practices

I have been given the task of copying a few tables from our production database to a data warehousing database on a once-a-day (overnight) basis. The number of tables will grow over time; currently it is 10. I am interested in not only task success but also best practices. Here's what I've come up with:
    1) drop the table in the destination database.
    2) re-create the destination table from the script provided by SQL Developer when you click on the 'SQL' tab while you're viewing the table.
    3) INSERT INTO the destination table from the source table using a database link. Note: I am not aware of any columns in the tables themselves which could be used to filter added/deleted/modified rows only.
    4) After data import, create primary key and indexes.
    Questions:
    1) SQL Developer included the following lines when generating the table creation script:
    <table creation DDL commands>
    then
PCTFREE 10 PCTUSED 40 INITRANS 1 MAXTRANS 255 NOCOMPRESS LOGGING
    STORAGE (INITIAL 251658240 NEXT 1048576 MINEXTENTS 1 MAXEXTENTS 2147483645
    PCTINCREASE 0 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1 BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT)
    TABLESPACE "TBLSPC_PGROW"
it generated this code snippet for the table, the primary key and every index.
Is this necessary to include in my code if they are all default values? For example, one of the indexes gets scripted as follows:
CREATE INDEX "XYZ"."PATIENT_INDEX" ON "XYZ"."PATIENT" ("Patient")
-- do I need the following four lines?
PCTFREE 10 INITRANS 2 MAXTRANS 255 COMPUTE STATISTICS
    STORAGE(INITIAL 60817408 NEXT 1048576 MINEXTENTS 1 MAXEXTENTS 2147483645
    PCTINCREASE 0 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1 BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT)
    TABLESPACE "TBLSPC_IGROW"
    2) Anyone with advice on best practices for warehousing data like this, I am very willing to learn from your experience.
    Thanks in advance,
    Carl

I would strongly suggest not dropping and recreating tables every day.
The simplest option would be to create a materialized view on the destination database that queries the source database and to do a nightly refresh of that materialized view. You could then create a materialized view log on the source table and then do an incremental refresh of the materialized view.
You can schedule the refresh of the materialized view either in the materialized view definition, as a separate job, or by creating a refresh group and adding one or more materialized views.

  • What is summary level concept in data warehousing?

I am new to data warehousing.
can anybody explain about the summary level and higher level concepts in data warehousing?

    If I understood your question:
Data warehouses are intended for analytic processing (OLAP). Basically, It's based on queries that would take too long in OLTP (transactional processing). So you build a new Database, with a relatively denormalized model (you probably have heard about Star-Schema modeling, etc).
Look for Bill Inmon (Building the Data Warehouse) and Ralph Kimball (The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit : Expert Methods for Designing, Developing, and Deploying Data Warehouses) Data warehousing concept books. Mr. Inmon and Mr. Kiball pretty much "created" the Data Warehousing concept. You'll also find a Book from Oracle Press, named "Oracle XX Datawarehousing Guide" (XX = DB Release).
Also, you have plenty documentation about how to create a data warehouse in OTN. See thread below:
    OLAP and cubes tutorials
    Hope it's useful for you!

  • Data warehousing /Business intelligence

Does anyone have a list of data warehousing /Business intelligence interview questions?
or can share the Data warehousing/BI interview experience with me?

    I've included links to them.
Don?t over index your OLTP tables, as every index you add increases the time it takes to perform INSERTS, UPDATES, and DELETES. There is a fine line between having the ideal number
of indexes (for SELECTs) and the ideal number for data modifications
Too many indexes on frequently updated (inclusive of inserts, updates and deletes) tables incur extra index maintenance
overhead. Generally, OLTP database designs should keep the number of indexes to a
functional minimum, again due to the high volumes of similar transactions combined with the cost of index maintenance.
Unused indexes incur the cost of index maintenance for inserts, updates, and deletes without benefiting any users. Unused
indexes should be eliminated. Any index that has been used (by select, update or delete operations) will appear in sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats. Thus, any defined index not included in this DMV has not been used since the last re-start of SQL Server.
I generally start to get concerned when I see more than about five or six relational indexes on a volatile table. Having too many relational indexes
has a negative effect on insert, update, and delete performance. Ultimately, it is a judgment call, based on your workload, your hardware and I/O subsystem, and on your experience.
Standard practices call for indexing strategies in OLTP systems to target an increase in concurrency versus query support; however, more indexes have to be created than is
desired to reach acceptable query performance. The lower the proportion of write operations is in the system, the higher the level of indexing that can be tolerated, unless the timing of specific write operations is critical ref.http://www.bidn.com/blogs/TomLannen/bidn-blog/2625/indexing-strategies-for-oltp-databases

  • Data warehousing skills

    Hi there,
I'm a recent graduate and I want to look for a job in data warehousing. Could you give me some tips as to what
skill set/knowledge is required to be successful in this domain? I'm familiar with the basics of SQL, PL/SQL but I'd like
to master or improve my skills here.
I've Oracle complete reference with me. I'm sure there are tons of books out there. But could some of you give me
    few suggestions?
    I really appreciate your help.
    Thanks.

Skills required depend on the environment and your job role.
Different organisations will have a different mix of skills.
    Oracle Discoverer
    Oracle Warehouse Builder
    Oracle business Intelligence
DB administration (specific skills would be partitioning, materilized views)
    sql tuning skills (essential)
    pl/sql skills (essential)
    unix/linux knowledge
    database design skills
    Reporting tool (varies by organisation)
And whats the motivation for wanting to work in a datawarehouse environment?

  • What about data warehousing?

I have attended the 10g launch, perused the CD I got there and listened to a couple of online seminars. I can easily envision how 10g benefits OLTP applications, but data warehousing seems to be ignored in the presentations.
Does 10g offer anything over 9i for data warehousing, which has quite different resource demands? Is there any published information I could read?

    DATA WAREHOUSING
Oracle Database 10g has also enhanced its data warehouse and business intelligence capabilities, which results in
further reduction of the total cost of ownership while enabling customers to derive more value from their data and
    supporting real time data feeds.
Consolidation and integration of traditionally disparate business intelligence systems into a single integrated engine is
further enhanced in Oracle Database 10g. Database size limits have been raised to millions of terabytes. Business
Intelligence applications can be consolidated alongside transactional applications using Real Application Clusters
automatic service provisioning to manage resource allocation. This consolidation means analysis can be performed
directly against operational data and resource utilization can be maximized by reallocating servers to workloads as the
business needs change. The value of data is increased with the ability to perform even more diverse analytic
operations against core data with enhanced OLAP analytics, a data mining GUI and a new SQL model feature. The
SQL model cause allows query results to be treated as sets of multidimensional arrays upon which sophisticated
interdependent formulas are built. These formulas can be used in complex number-crunching applications such as
budgets and forecasts without the need to extract the data to a spreadsheet or perform complex joins and unions.
Real Time Warehousing is enabled either by consolidating business intelligence with operational applications, or by
new change data capture capabilities based on Oracle Streams which produce low or zero latency trickle feeds with
    integrated ETL processing.
