Databases for Essbase

Hi Team,
If I am using only Essbase with Shared service/APS and EAS, can you please confirm that we require only one schema in EPM 11.1.2.2? Dont we need individual schemas for SS and EAS? I am aware that in earlier versions we need separate Schema for SS and EAS. Is it not the same in EPM 11.1.2.2?
Also in the earlier version (11.1.1.3 ) I never used to provide Database information while configuring Essbase server, but in 11.1.2.2 it looks we need to provide connection information for EPM System Repository.
Please advice. Thanks for you help in advance

It is entirely your choice is you want to use one schema or multiple schemas, personally I prefer using multiple schemas as it makes life easier for recovery and problem solving.

Generating Essbase database for Hyperion PerformanceScorecard, HPS v1.1.1.3

Hi,
We're working with HPS v11.1.1.3. The Framework is developed without any issues.
A data source connection could be established for Essbase & synchronized periodically.
However, while we tried to generate the Essbase database from- Administration (menu) -> Star Schema Generation, we hit a roadblock. It failed with the below error message:
*"Exception generating Essbase cube (via Integration Services): Star Schema generation failed"*
Did any of you get to see the above error?
To troubleshoot, we did the below-
(i) The generated xml files (for OLAP Model & Metaoutline) are imported to an EIS catalog. No problem here.
(ii) When we manually tried to load the metadata from EIS, it didn't let us proceed due to an error: Two of the tables used in OLAP Model don't physically exist.* To our surprise, they do exist.
(iii) We manually modified the OLAP Model by deleting the troublesome tables & drag-n-dropped them again. Ofcourse, in this process, we had to tamper metaoutline too
(iv) Now, with the modified EIS artifacts, we were able to load the metadata _(,with very few rejects)._
Before raising an SR with Oracle, I thought of checking with you experts incase one of you happened to have faced this & got it resolved. Please advise.

Hot backups for essbase planning databases

Hi gurus
Can please tell me best advice for making hot backups of our essbase planning databases for disaster recoveries?
We try doubletake but files are locked unless essbase is put in read-only mode.
Any good tools for this? Certified stuff? Heard maybe VBE?

First of all have you read the document of backing up essbase :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/hfm_backup.pdf
If you are taking a backup while essbase is running then you will need to put the databases into read only mode, this can be done by using a maxl script and once again to take it out of read only mode.
There are lots of 3rd party applications out there for backing up file structures, it all depends on what you want it to do and how much you want to pay.
If it is a small installation you could even script it yourself depensing on your knowledge to back up files and copy them to a san or backup drive.

Can I lock an Essbase database for a particular period?

Hi Everyone,
I was thinking about the ways in which this can be done. Any simple ways to achieve this? Please do post your suggestions. Periods would be defined by Years or a combination of Years and Periods.

Hi John,
That seems to be the only way to do it! The requirement was mainly for Actual data load. I created a special user, granted it Viewer and Analytic Server write access in Planning module, Server access for Essbase and configured it as a planning as well as Essbase user. During refresh, the filter was automatically created in Essbase. A MAXL script is called before the Actual data load that modifies the definition of the filter through a substitution variable. I am using this user account for all the actual data loads.

Correct, the data that is stored in Essbase will be the same regardless of which connection type you use.
Data that is only stored in Planning can only be retrieved using a Planning connection. This includes Supporting Detail and SmartLists as these are stored in the Planning relational database.
As a general rule I always use an Essbase connection unless i specifically want to get supporting detail or smartlists but that is just me.

Time series functions are not working in OBIEE for ESSBASE data source

Hi All,
I am facing a problem in OBIEE as I am getting error messages for measure columns with Time series functions(Ago,ToDate and PeriodRolling) in both RPD and Answers.
Error is "Target database does not support Ago operation".
But I am aware of OBIEE supports Time Series functions for Essbase data source.
using Hyperion 9.3.1 as data source and obiee 11.1.1.5.0 as reporting tool.

is because the time series function are not supported for the framentation content, see the content of the oracle support:
The error occurs due to the fact the fragmented data sources are used on some Time series measures. Time series measures (i.e. AGO) are not supported on fragmented data sources.
Confirmation is documented in the following guide - Creating and Administering the Business Model and Mapping Layer in an Oracle BI Repository > Process of Creating and Administering Dimensions
Ago or ToDate functionality is not supported on fragmented logical table sources. For more information, refer to “About Time Series Conversion Functions” on page 197.

Solution to Errno:7 in MaxL for Essbase Studio redeployment scripts

This is an answer to an archived forum post that I found via a Google search. The forum post no longer accepts replies. The forum post contained an unanswered question about how to resolve "Errno:7" in MaxL in release 11.1.2.3 when trying to redeploy an outline through Essbase Studio.
I encountered the same error in a client environment and could not find any resolution or references to this in the Knowledge Base, patches, release notes, etc.
I wanted to post the resolution that worked for me, in case someone else encounters Errno:7 in MaxL.
In this particular instance, the MaxL "deploy outline" script worked fine until we upgraded 11.1.2.1 to 11.1.2.3. After upgrading, we could still connect to the Essbase Agent via MaxL, but the "deploy outline" script fails with "Not able to connect to BPM Server. Errno:7" and "BPM Connect Status: Error". No evidence of the error could be found in the logs for the Essbase Agent, the Essbase application in question, and Essbase Studio. Using the Essbase Studio Console to redeploy the outline worked fine.
The root cause was learned when we ran the EPM Registry Editor to view a registry report. The report showed that while Essbase Studio was correctly listening on port 5300, the web port was still on the old 11.1.2.1 port (9080) instead of the port 11.1.2.3 was expecting (12080). This port number is not exposed to us if we go back into the EPM Configuration tool and drill down to Essbase Studio. The config tool only allows us to change the relational database connection and the "datafiles" folder location. Running "netstat -na" from the command prompt confirmed that the server was listening to 9080 instead of 12080.
Using the EPM Registry Editor command-line tool to update the port's property value and then restarting the Essbase Studio service fixed the issue for us. If you read the Essbase Studio documentation as I did, you may have had the impression that editing a file on the server would do the trick. But the Readme for Essbase Studio 11.1.2.3 provides the real answer:
"Starting in Release 11.1.2.3, the following Essbase Studio server properties are stored in the
Oracle Hyperion Shared Services Registry database.
The 11.1.2.3 Oracle Essbase Studio User's Guide describes all server properties as being in the
server.properties file. To view or modify the settings in Shared Services Registry, use the
epmsys_registry utility, described in the Oracle Enterprise Performance Management System
Deployment Options Guide."

In that thread, someone had questioned if an 11.1.2.2 MaxL client could still connect and bypass the error. I happened to have a laptop handy with the 11.1.2.2 MaxL client installed on it and was able to test that. The 11.1.2.2 MaxL client got the error as well.
In my 11.1.2.3 environment I tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit MaxL runtimes and verified both were on the latest available Essbase patch set for 11.1.2.3. Again, they still got the Errorno:7 message. The problem was only fixed after updating the "server.httpPort" property value via the epmsys_registry tool.

Custom install for Essbase 11.1.2_ URGENT

Hi All,
Could you advice on What is the best way to perform this test Envo installtion senorio?
Duing the "Choose components installation" of Essbase 11.1.2, on a Windows server 2008 sp1 x64 "server1".
what custom components, should be selected to have only Essbase server 11.1.2..install on server1
Please note only a working install for Essbase database on server1..
or the bear min, custom components/files to run Essbase.. can this be done without sheard services..
also on a seprate Windows server 2008 sp1 x64 "server2", could you
advice, what custom components should be selected to install only EAS on server2.
on the "Choose components installation" screen
so EAS can connect to server1, and access Essbase Cubes..

Installed and configured "Foundation" on one system. Installed "Essbase" products on another system in the same network (Not installed HbNet components). While configuring Essbase products it never asked for Shared Services Server location and hence the essbase products registration with Shared services is failed at the end.
I checked in the services of second system and wonder to see "OpenLDAP" service is running. (I was not able to uncheck "Hyperion Foundation" product options during Essbase product configuration).
I have given the same database schema details used to configure database for the shared services. Am i missing anything. Please help.

It seems you have server1 for foundation services and server2 for essbase only.
Try this scenario with the following steps:
1.For server1, Install and configure your database , Install and configure your foundation services.
after your done with server1
2.for server2, Install and configure foundation services. Point your database to server1.
after your done successfully, with no errors.
Proceed to installation and configuration of essbase products.

I'm little confused the way to configure EPM products in a distributed environment. Registration of essbase related product with shared services is still failing even mentioned to use "Previously configured shared services database" on Shared services and Registry database page.
From the installation guide: 1. Using the database administration console, change the password of the user account that was used to configure the Shared Services database.
2. Do i need to stop shared services web application and OpenLDAP while configuring "Essbase" products on another system.

Setup event table cache clear for - Essbase cube table

we have event polling table for clearing the cache now having issues in setting up for essbase physical cube tables.
1. we have structure of hyperion like this for physical cube table "CONSOL"- where schema is empty.
"Hyperion"."CONSOLX".."CONSOL"
2. Event polling table is in different database/connection
When the event table is populated without schema, polling actually looking for the table in the database configured for the event pool connection pool and not "hyperion".
*[55001] The physical table Hyperion:CONSOLX:Event Polling:CONSOL in a cache polled row does not exist.*
When i read in some blogs...I understood its working as expected(when something is null it looks in event polling database)
Has anybody configured event polling for hyperion cubes table cache clear ?

what is your insert statement in UET table?
Looks like you are missing one value out of 4 required. Thats why it is considering Event Pooling in between. As you have event pooling table in different physical database, you have to fill DbName,CatalogName,SchemaName and TableName in the UET tables.

Hyperin analyzer unable to list the databases from Essbase

Hi ,
We are using Hyperion Analyzer 7.2 , I have an issue while connecting to Essbase databases.
As mentioned int he document I went Administrator tools go to Repostiory tab , File-> New -> database connection-> Essbase
Now I gave the credentials of server username and password... and hit next here I am getting a dialog
""UNABLE TO RETRIEVE LIST OF AVAILABALE DATABASES"" When I went to details of the error
null nested exception is java.lang.noclassDefFoundError
Please let me know if anyone face this error.

Regarding to error occurred while retrieving list of databases, please make sure:
1) Make sure Essbase server is up running
2) Make sure Essbase Runtime Client is installed in the Application Server machine
3) go to System Environment variables make sure:
PATH is pointing to x:\hyperion\common\ADM\7.2.0\Essbase\7.2.0\bin
If Tomcat and Websphere:
4) Go Analyzer directory and search for Analyzer_Startup.bat
4.1) In Analyzer_Startup.bat, make sure the PATH is set to x:\hyperion\common\ADM\7.2.0\Essbase\7.2.0\bin
4.2) restart system
If Weblogic:
4) Go to Analyzer directory and search for Analyzer_env.bat
4.1) In Analyzer_env.bat, make sure the PATH is set to x:\hyperion\common\ADM\7.2.0\Essbase\7.2.0\
4.2) Go to Bea directory and search for InstallSvc.cmd or InstallService.cmd
4.3) in InstallSvc.cmd, look for a line:
call "%WL_Home%\common\bin\CommEnv.cmd"
After this line, make sure you have a line to call analyzer_env.bat
call "x:\Hyperion\Analyzer\analyzer.env.bat"
4.4) restart weblogic
5) Try to connect to Essbase again

Hard drive configuration for Essbase

I'm new to the administration of Essbase and would appreciate any assistance.We are running Essbase 5.0.2 SP14 on a Windows 2000 O/S. We only have around 15 gig free on drive space (each month about 5 MB of new data is added) and are planning on expanding to 3/72 GB hard drives. Our customers want to be able to have a copy of data for each year and save them as different applications (i.e., data2000, data2001, etc) and save them till the end of time. I was wondering if the h/d should be partitioned even though they could potentially want to look at the data at anytime. If the drive is partitioned, would that require having to export the data, reload and recalc it?Any information anyone could provide will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,If your Windows box have two drive letter like C:\ for OS, D:\ for Essbase, then you will add a new RAID storage as E:\, you don't have to export/import.1. From Application Manager, select Database->Setting->Storage TAB.2. At Location option, you can setup Disk Volume setting to store different drive letter.For example,Disk Volume: EPartition Size: unlimitedFile Type: index+data File size: 2097152KThis means, all of Cube data is located on E:\, no size limitation, the located object are index(ess*.ind) and data (ess*.pag) and 2Gbyte is maximum size of an each file.Also there is information on Database Administrator Guide, or on-line help on Application Manager.

RDBMS for Essbase

Hi All-
I got the below statement from an Oracle guy while planning for an upgrade:
"An Oracle RDBMS is required in essbase v11 for housing metadata and system security information and it was not required in the v7. "
Is it a valid statement if we just want to have Essbase at standalone product with native security? Does it mean that v9.3 also need an RDBMS for Essbase? If so, why?
I've worked on v7 & v9.3 Essbase, and I don't remember using RDBMS for v9.3 Essbase. Please let me know if you have more info on this, Thanks!
